Why the Windows Phone 7 Start Page Has Blank Spots
Talks about one of the most debated things about wp7 design...the big black space to the right on the homescreen.
Interesting read
BS, its a simple design. Highly doubt scientist got involved, and highly doubt they were thinking about famous artist.

BS? You don't think someone with knowledge of Design stepped in to design Metro? They're not saying they drew from Da Vinci, they're saying it's based on Design Principles, which have been around since the Renaissance and proven over time.
The design principles he talked about:
Rule of Thirds
Golden Ratio Scroll down to where it describes the impact on Architecture, Painting, Book design, Perceptual studies, Music
Basically saying the Metro design comes from design principles. We're used to alot of symmetry, but symmetry is a bad way to make something stand out. Which is pretty much common sense if you think about it. I agree, that a majoir theme of the UI is simplicity, but when I look at Metro I see a company that did alot of homework and did a lot of work to achieve that balance between elegance and simplicity.
Also you can't just say the design of Metro comes from simplicity. The easiest thing would have been to make the tiles symmetrical. the fact that it's not shows that other thought processes went on.
They're not talking about Metro, they're talking about "Start".
Why make it sound complicated? They needed a way for people to know that there is more information to the right, that's all. Its not rocket science.

Why do they need that? There's no such mechanic on any other mobile OS and there is often times when there is more content to the left or right. But it was part of a greater design decision to indicate more content through the design.
If you think it follows Design Principles by happenstance that's your prerogative. But I'll go with a designer designed it that way.

Listen to Albert Shum and the other WP7 designers talk and you'll realize that a lot of thought was put into every tiny detail. Good design is like this and it's why techies/engineers suck at design.
Acually I wouldn't be surprised if some visual specialists were involved in such a process of creating new UI.
And to be honest, some of you don't have a clue how hard it is to find a real good visual proportions on screen, yes it is almost rocket science. From this aspect WP7 is probably well done.
Bull****!
Everyone at Microsoft are drunk and they still havent noticed its out of centre.
You guys are so right, I don't know how I didn't notice it before! It probably took them years and designers from all around the world just to push the tiles to the left! OMG, its brilliant!
People don't know there is more to the right so its beyond me as to how they came up with the idea to put the arrow up there. Probably took more history books, scientist, and designers from all around the world ages to come up with this! Freaking Awesome!

Yeah, right, this is why most of the interfaces around look like ****. Because making good one is too easy.

You think this was their first and only design? Somebody just said "let's put an arrow on the right to get to a list of apps" and this is what immediate was drawn up? Come on, you're being ridiculous.
It probably didn't take them all that much but this has been a point of contention among folks and this helps to explain why it actually makes sense and works quite well from a design perspective. The whole UI isn't just some designer's whim. There has been a lot of effort put into every aspect so that it works together. They even made a little book about it.

The golden ratio, the rule of thirds, and all these have been around for more than a millennia. The research and and statistics have been record decades ago about how people perceive art that follow these rules and guidelines. There is a general consensus that art that uses these rules is more appealing to the eye than the same thing without these rules.
Something like this is really huge because there's so much math involved in it and that its almost ubiquitous in nature, from plant life to the structure of DNA. However, its very simple to use and implement it.
All microsoft and other artists do is just play by these rules that have all ready been established. So all these numbers and "fluff" that the article presents can just as easily be applied to everything else.

Right but the article is accurate. You're making it seem as if the whole thing was done purely just so they could stick an arrow there and the sizing and layout was just what first came to someone's head without much thought. They likely had dozens of mockups with the final choice being tweaked many, many times before becoming what we see today.

I figure joining a graphic design class at an university would make your brain explode with all "fluff" and "bull****" they teach there.
Ugh no. It would enlighten you as to why you do certain graphical things and the principles behind them.

So you're saying they didn't take design principles into account when creating those mockups and deciding on which direction to go? You're not making any sense... What's your point? What exactly are you disagreeing with?
They just stuck with the UI. Made it flow. Pushed it to the left because it looks better and because there is more information to the right. They followed the KISS rule.
The article just made MS design sound so scientific, when in reality everything we do is scientific.
However it doesn't mean MS went into great lengths searching for perfect measurements just to push things to the left.
We can say the exact same thing for any other OS. I call BS and fluff, just let the damn designer's do their job.
Is it just me that's noticing this? Nowadays most of the new apps are just terrible. For example "IM Buddy", I can't fathom how this piece of shift passed certification. It's mind boggling.
If you think that's bad, just look at 90% of the iPhone's app store! This is why quantity doesn't trump quality.
iPhone and Android users keep quoting the NUMBER of apps in their stores as being somehow the best indicator of how a store is doing, but in the end a store with 4,000 top quality apps is far better than a store with 300,000 rotten eggs.
I mean, does the music business tout how many records they have? Is Sony BMG better than EMI because they've put out more music? Of course not. It's all down to the quality of the artists.
Same with apps.
All app stores will end up with some dross. I pray the WP7 store will end up with less of it. All the dross does it make the cream harder to find.
This is the problem now that MS has where they are being judged by quantity when it comes to apps more than quality so they will put stuff through that they otherwise would not had the media let up on the bashing. Though its worth noting that android has a lot worse and is flooded with pure rubbish.
Glad I'm not the only one that thinks the marketplace is full of mostly crap-ware. Other than games, I haven't bought a single thing from the marketplace. The majority of the apps on there regurgitate stuff you could find by doing a simple goobing search. Most of the decent stuff is freeware anyway, like YouTube, Facebook, IMDB, Adobe Reader.
And how many tip-calculators are there!! Do people really calculate their tips based on how much they paid, how many people there are and what percentage tip they want to leave?? You could just calculate how much your meal was and then round the figure off like every other completely sane person.
Solutions looking for problems if you ask me.

sometimes it's really difficult to calculate a 10% tip.. i have 5 tip calculators just in case one of them messes up.
I'm hoping that once a month or something, they get their interns over there at MS to go through the apps and delete the crap/ duplicate apps and notify the developer that they need to up their game.
Do we really need 8 different live-book apps from the same guy, one of which is about a bridge they put up near him?

I don't think it's any worse than it's been from the start. It's always a lot of crap and some good stuff. I can't agree with the guy who said he'd never purchase anything that's not a game. I've purchased Pictures Labs, Stocks Tile, Cocktail Flow, iKamasutra, Personal Shopping Assistant, Word Explorer Dictionary, and I'll give the $3 to Seymour whenever the trial asks me to. I have another 20 or so free apps installed that are pretty good, too.
i don't think we should be worried about what apps go in. what really needs to happen is that the market place itself needs a bit of a revamp in terms of functionality. Possible things that could be put in which would easily make the market place stand up above all rivals are... an advanced search for it, change logs, friends using app, trial/buy ratio, most downloaded/purchased in last day/week/month, feature requests (with rating for request), dev interactions (someway that the dev can get feedback on a particular feature), app beta testing (e.g. one of us makes an app, and we want just the xda community to beta test it before we ship it out for the masses).
all of these are just little ideas that could easily improve the market, help devs bring better products, and ultimately separate the crapware from the awesomeware.
Where I have spent $$$ on apps..
Games: Many - mostly XBL but a couple not XBL worth buying (try a game called Decent... it's really great looking and fun)
Apps: YomoMedia - it's a good RSS feeder and reader... Converter Pro... very cool app for converting everything including currency. Thumba 2 - best image editor on WP7... bar-none. Morfo - because it's retarded and fun. Metro Web Browser - it's cool but it was kind of a waste - it does add some novel features to browsing but not having it integrated is kinda well... worthless. Collage - another great picture app. Picture Frame - another good one for displaying pictures. Picture Labs... not as good as Thumba. Presenter - cool way to control my powerpoints alas not the best solution without Bluetooth however!
Let's think for a minute. The iPhone App Store is filled largely with...garbage apps. Same with Android Market (perhaps more so). What made you guys think that Windows Marketplace wasn't going to suffer the same fate?
wish they would let US, the community, screen the apps i.e. which gets approved or which gets trashed. just wishful thinking

thanks n8ter. i never knew you could do that. what if there is no decimal to move to the left? but if you move the decimal to the left and the left way is right and the right way is wrong what is left is just the wrong way through the centre and it all becomes mind bottling...
i know it's sometimes difficult to sense sarcasm but you'd think that common sense would factor in somewhere..
but seriously...
there are lots of useless apps in any marketplace but you need that base of useless apps which draws in more users (just because of publicized numbers of apps) and this in turn will attract more developers.
so i welcome all these useless/junk apps.. i won't be using them but they are good for inflating the number of apps in WP7
There was nothing in that post to indicate sarcasm. No emoticon or anything. If you were being sarcastic, you failed at indicating it.
If you actually read this forum, you'll notice that lots of people say lots of things you may think is sarcastic, but they actually mean it.

Well, I'm going to add three QUALITY apps to the Norwegian market as soon as it opens. Might even have to release them as free apps on the american/english markets until the Norwegian one opens, as licenses are bound to the country you buy it from. So...if I sell through foreign market, users will lose their license when they move to the domestic one :S
Crap apps are easy to make
Good apps take time
This is why there were good apps at launch, but now you see more crap. Give it another month or so, and the tides will turn. Keeping the Zune market from being plagued like the Ios store and Android store, that will be hard to do.
Hey guys,
Been a long time viewer/reader of XDA especially on the Android side of things. However, recently made a app with the help of a few people for WP7, its a daily deal app showing you the daily deals from Woot and Newegg ShellShocker. Any of the various Woots (Home, Deals, Sellout, Shirt, Kids, Main) can be pinned as well as the Newegg Shellshocker.
I was honestly mainly looking for feedback on how to improve the application, we are currently working on bringing in quite a bit more deal sites, but Im sure there are many things everyone would love to see from a deal tracker, so please feel free to share those idea's here!
App Link - http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/d934c468-4f8f-4f1a-ba16-a1606525715e
Hoping to bring a beta of the new sources version here soon, so these changes would help be a part of that beta's initial build. Cheers!
The app is great.I'm always looking for deals. Even when I'm not buying. Maybe you should add an option for either light or dark background.
Nice app, I like it!
Minor suggestion: Perhaps provide greater contrast for the text label on each tile? The white text blends in with some of the tile colors, making the label difficult to read.
awesome!
Some suggestions to add
dailysteals.com
1saleaday.com
bedeals (actually I don't really trust this site, the ssl is untrusted lately and the "deals" are pretty much what things go for on amazon)
I also check giveawayoftheday.com, but they have maybe one good thing a year, and it's not something you can do from your phone.
Looks good, what about deals for outside US?

Not a bad idea, will look into it. Your referring to the main overview page only correct? Since the product pages themselves are usually colored. Let me know, and I will add it to the list!

Android-powered Google glasses may seem like fantasy, but according to the New York Times, they’re real, and on track for a 2012 launch.
Citing “several Google employees familiar with the project,” Nick Bilton reports that the heads-up display will go on sale by the end of the year. It’ll have a 3G or 4G data connection built-in, and will cost somewhere between $250 and $600.
Between Bilton’s report and earlier rumors from 9to5Mac’s Seth Weintraub, we’re starting to get a clearer picture of what these glasses will look like. Weintraub reported that the actual heads-up display is “only for one eye and on the side.” That pretty much lines up with Bilton’s account that the glasses will include “a small screen that will sit a few inches from someone’s eye.” In other words, these aren’t the kind of glasses where the lens is the actual display.
A low-resolution camera will be able to provide real time information about a user’s surroundings. The glasses will reportedly resemble Oakley Thumps, pictured here.
As for software, Weintraub wrote that users will navigate the HUD with a system of head tilting. Although the information will be based on existing Google services, such as Google Latitude and Google Goggles, it’ll be presented as augmented reality, on top of whatever’s happening in the real world, according to Bilton.
Still unclear, of course, is whether anyone would actually wear these things in public. Would I love to have a HUD to remind me about the names of people I’ve met, or to give me directions in the car without having to glance down at my phone? Absolutely. But as my editor Doug Aamoth pointed out, waiting for the contact lens version may be more socially acceptable.
ff
This seems like an awesome idea but I can't help to think at the sony 3D glasses that a) dont fit your head and b)cause headache. I hope if googles release these glases that they fix these issues
If they put sell this tech to glasses makers, make possible to use the whole lens, turn it off and have about 2 Gb for data (useful things), I would buy it.

Finally a potentially more effective way of developing brain tumors.
Although, this is just speculation
That would be nice, I'd totally ditch my contacts (they're a pain anyways) for tech glasses, that is if they can give me a nice frame to go with it.
well i had also read this news ago but i was not assure that time but thanks you share it again with us so now i am agree with the news
maybe they can also warn you not to run against signs on the street, like some people do while texting I think this would also reduce the number of brain-tumors D
I need this glasses, then I can surf while I sitting in lessons

Hello;
I'm planning an event and I want to do a game to brake the ice where guests look at other people's old photos (when they were kids) and try to guess who's who. The easiest way to do this would be with an app. To keep developing costs down, we'll have a couple of tablets for people to use (the photos will be printed and displayed) so we don't need an app that works with everyone's phone. Just one single model of Android tablet. Much easier to debug.
I haven't found any website that provides a platform for this game, but it looks to me that the code for a simple kids learning game like "Match the animal's photo with the name" could be easily recycled into the app that I'm looking for. Anyone interested? What do you guys think that it would cost to develop something like this?
I realize this may not be the best area for this post. Any suggestions on where to post it would be appreciated!
