Is it just me that's noticing this? Nowadays most of the new apps are just terrible. For example "IM Buddy", I can't fathom how this piece of shift passed certification. It's mind boggling.
If you think that's bad, just look at 90% of the iPhone's app store! This is why quantity doesn't trump quality.
iPhone and Android users keep quoting the NUMBER of apps in their stores as being somehow the best indicator of how a store is doing, but in the end a store with 4,000 top quality apps is far better than a store with 300,000 rotten eggs.
I mean, does the music business tout how many records they have? Is Sony BMG better than EMI because they've put out more music? Of course not. It's all down to the quality of the artists.
Same with apps.
All app stores will end up with some dross. I pray the WP7 store will end up with less of it. All the dross does it make the cream harder to find.
This is the problem now that MS has where they are being judged by quantity when it comes to apps more than quality so they will put stuff through that they otherwise would not had the media let up on the bashing. Though its worth noting that android has a lot worse and is flooded with pure rubbish.
Glad I'm not the only one that thinks the marketplace is full of mostly crap-ware. Other than games, I haven't bought a single thing from the marketplace. The majority of the apps on there regurgitate stuff you could find by doing a simple goobing search. Most of the decent stuff is freeware anyway, like YouTube, Facebook, IMDB, Adobe Reader.
And how many tip-calculators are there!! Do people really calculate their tips based on how much they paid, how many people there are and what percentage tip they want to leave?? You could just calculate how much your meal was and then round the figure off like every other completely sane person.

sometimes it's really difficult to calculate a 10% tip.. i have 5 tip calculators just in case one of them messes up.
I'm hoping that once a month or something, they get their interns over there at MS to go through the apps and delete the crap/ duplicate apps and notify the developer that they need to up their game.
Do we really need 8 different live-book apps from the same guy, one of which is about a bridge they put up near him?

I don't think it's any worse than it's been from the start. It's always a lot of crap and some good stuff. I can't agree with the guy who said he'd never purchase anything that's not a game. I've purchased Pictures Labs, Stocks Tile, Cocktail Flow, iKamasutra, Personal Shopping Assistant, Word Explorer Dictionary, and I'll give the $3 to Seymour whenever the trial asks me to. I have another 20 or so free apps installed that are pretty good, too.
i don't think we should be worried about what apps go in. what really needs to happen is that the market place itself needs a bit of a revamp in terms of functionality. Possible things that could be put in which would easily make the market place stand up above all rivals are... an advanced search for it, change logs, friends using app, trial/buy ratio, most downloaded/purchased in last day/week/month, feature requests (with rating for request), dev interactions (someway that the dev can get feedback on a particular feature), app beta testing (e.g. one of us makes an app, and we want just the xda community to beta test it before we ship it out for the masses).
all of these are just little ideas that could easily improve the market, help devs bring better products, and ultimately separate the crapware from the awesomeware.
Where I have spent $$$ on apps..
Games: Many - mostly XBL but a couple not XBL worth buying (try a game called Decent... it's really great looking and fun)
Apps: YomoMedia - it's a good RSS feeder and reader... Converter Pro... very cool app for converting everything including currency. Thumba 2 - best image editor on WP7... bar-none. Morfo - because it's retarded and fun. Metro Web Browser - it's cool but it was kind of a waste - it does add some novel features to browsing but not having it integrated is kinda well... worthless. Collage - another great picture app. Picture Frame - another good one for displaying pictures. Picture Labs... not as good as Thumba. Presenter - cool way to control my powerpoints alas not the best solution without Bluetooth however!
Let's think for a minute. The iPhone App Store is filled largely with...garbage apps. Same with Android Market (perhaps more so). What made you guys think that Windows Marketplace wasn't going to suffer the same fate?
wish they would let US, the community, screen the apps i.e. which gets approved or which gets trashed. just wishful thinking

i know it's sometimes difficult to sense sarcasm but you'd think that common sense would factor in somewhere..

there are lots of useless apps in any marketplace but you need that base of useless apps which draws in more users (just because of publicized numbers of apps) and this in turn will attract more developers.
so i welcome all these useless/junk apps.. i won't be using them but they are good for inflating the number of apps in WP7

Well, I'm going to add three QUALITY apps to the Norwegian market as soon as it opens. Might even have to release them as free apps on the american/english markets until the Norwegian one opens, as licenses are bound to the country you buy it from. So...if I sell through foreign market, users will lose their license when they move to the domestic one :S

good thing i didnt jump on the wp7 at first site. i rather had wait to see how the developers would or would not embrace it. also the current phones seem to be outdated after reading the new android phones show cased at ces. the dell venue pro did peak my interest for its portrait slider and large screen but i wanted a front facing camera also. guess ill have to keep waiting for the next best thing

Honestly passed the geek **** fight that occurs when we start talking about our toys the Windows Phone has been a great experience so while I won't try to change your mind I will say it's been one of the most comfortable platforms I've used for a mobile device in my lifetime. I have no regrets from picking it up over iOS or Android but like a greedy child I want more and I want it from Microsoft yesterday.

sad but true they need to pick up the pace and satisfy us, their community and costumers. Both the iOS and Android, their competitors, are growing really fast, adding a lot more for our beloved WP7 to catch up with

now that I've cooled down from the shock I can say that most of us put too much of expectation into yesterday announcement, and when it not satisfy our needs most of us (like me) felt like being cheated or thrown out
as for the new models, I just really don't think that it would make difference, since what we want is the change in software, not a 4.5" with Tigra and half-day battery to go along with it

Says who ??? Out of all the specs of ALL the WP7 phones, nothing is like WOW. Really, everything on every model has been done already by another maker or platform. I don't think anyone wants a 4.5" display, unless it's a tablet, it does not fit in the pocket too well. MS needs a show stopper, a really HOT WP7 phones, they don't have one. There is nice phones don't get me wrong but, no WOW phones.
I can honestly say CES had some Android phones that were faster and nicer displays, still not WOW but, a very strong Hmmmm. If they were WP7 models, I might get a happy about them.

i am not sure what ppl were hoping from the CES and microsoft, WP7 was just launched in Oct 2010 and we are still waiting for the first update... adding on new things to the OS before the update will be not a wise thing to do...

The indecision on the Skydrive stuff is beginning to p*ss me off.
Well I have to say, that it's probably better off to wait for the MWC in February for phone news, I will wait for that to see whether I should wait for some decent spec'd wp7 devices, or just jump on the android ship.
WP7 is impressive OS but there is no killer WP7 device on the market. Dell Venur pro is one worth buying but I don't like its portrait keyboard. I'll wait for Nokia WP7 phone later this year.

I saw one commercial around original launch time for the galaxy nexus, and honestly it pushed Google+ harder than the hardware itself. I have not seen any unlocked galaxy nexus commercials in the US. I like having the exclusive phone and all, but this seems a bit ridiculous. There is no reason the galaxy nexus couldn't have way outperformed the note in sales. I still get asked all the time when I pay with google wallet, "Is that an iPhone?". No. "Oh, is that a droid?" No! Its cute to know there are so many ignorant people out there at first. However, it tends to get irritating that google spends so much time and so many resources on ICS to make it the beautiful experience that it is and then just watches the nexus line flop hopelessly on the floor while the cumbersome touchwiz and bloated sense dominate the market.
Can someone please explain to me why Google and Samsung insist on wasting all this time and all these resources on building such a great product to only slide it into a bookshelf to collect dust as it were?
Samsung has bigger fish to fry (SGII and probably the SGIII) which due to crapware probably make more money from these phones, and Google advertises on their own sites but wouldn't make a lot of sense for them to push a phone that they probably only make little profit off of.
Enjoy the fact that you have a phone that will get JB before basically anyone else, that you have stock android, and that you have one of the greatest dev community's of all time. OF ALL TIME!
Also, go into a Verizon store, you wouldn't even think that they sold a GNexus where I live (Pittsburgh, PA), Multiple Motorola/HTC shrines while the GNexus sits right next to the Bionic in the corner of forgotten phones.
I honestly don't know and I can't tell you. There's two things Google sucks at terribly: marketing and support.
Microsoft is in a similar boat. It doesn't matter how much either company innovates, they are incapable of letting people know their products exist and they fall to the wayside.
I loved Windows Media Centre when it first came out. But version after version of it has come and gone and little features have been added. I eventually switched to XBMC. Why? Because no one knows what Windows Media Centre is. Microsoft isn't wasting time on it for the few guys with TV tuners.
Take the above example and substitute almost all Google products in there. Wave, Buzz, even Google Docs. I use it all the time and it's a great product, but people see it and have no clue it exists. For that matter I doubt they even know you can use Microsoft's web based Word with SkyDrive.
The tech companies seem to be in this funk where they compete against each other for features, but forget to inform the public that they're even offering the services they launch. It's no wonder that Apple is dominating, look at how much more they spend on campaigns. iPod ads plastered all over buildings... even seniors know the word iPod even if they don't know what it is.
All Google needs to do to take over the world is hire people from Apple's marketing team. Make something viral. The last time they had that was with the Google search engine itself and Gmail. G+ while it's nice, only boomed with the intake of new tech heads. Sign-ups died right after because no consumers know it exists and Google has failed to tell them why it's any better than Facebook.
Here in my city, the Galaxy Nexus is actually kind of popular, but that's only because Bell and Virgin put out big billboards for it's launch. I say kind of, because those billboards are gone now that the launch is over. Bet you there's still a huge iPhone 4s sign in all of those stores though.

The Nexus One was considered a flop by the industry. I personally was fully behind Google selling fully unlocked phones. I think if they could have gotten the price a bit less inflated and marketed it properly, the Nexus line could be more than it is now. I just don't think Google is that interested in selling phones. It's about the money and that comes from the licencing they get from other manufacturers.

I wasn't aware that Google licensed Android to OEM's. Pretty sure it's free because it's under the GPL.
No it is not under the GPL. Most of it is Apache licensed, with a few things under GPL. There are also closed source portions. Some things do have to be licensed to OEMs. Otherwise, they would never legally be able to offer google apps on their devices ootb, be able to sync with Google Calendar, and several other things.

It's a reference phone. That's all that is. This reference phone has two purposes:
1) Flagship device: "beta" test the next Android update with newer hardware.
2) Reference... its a prototype to suggest what the minimum hardware should be.
Nexus One set the standard for all future phones to have a 1GHz CPU.
I agree with adrynalyne. The Galaxy Nexus has a great developer community and support with great ROMs/kernels. I can really care less if the Galaxy Nexus isn't as popular as a iPhone or Galaxy S series. Just know that the Galaxy Nexus is a flagship device and will get Android 5.0 before any other phones get it (with the exception of the next "Nexus" flagship)
Before I give my opinion, I must admit that my opinions may not hold true legally. I know little more than DMV laws. Nor am I a tech expert, insider or historian. I will be wrong on some facts, but I believe that my overall analysis will stand true.
Apple isn't really hitting Google as hard as some may think.
Google and apple are 2 forces that have an inverse success relationship. This we all know. They compete over the same market. This was from day 1, heck, even before then (depending on how you judge when day 1 was).
This is a fact that hasn't gone unseen to them both. They choose 2 tactics to deal with that issue. Apple chose to gain fame and sales through marketing, and got patents on all that's under the sun. A tactic that may look ugly, but money doesn't care.
Google, on the other hand, doesn't look perfect either. They gave ALL the freedom to developers, and opened the platform up. This protects them from apple, to a degree, because they aren't accountable for the actions of others. This gave their platform an advantage over the legal system and the rights of others.
I dislike apple, and like google, but that's not worth a thing. Google's tactics are healthier towards the market. Apple kills development... Outside apple itself.
The thing is, apple can continue to harm the android platform, and never kill it, ever. This is because android is open, and devs and manufacturers will always adjust.
Google, on the other hand, only needs one hit on ios, One injunction, and apple is dead in the water. Apple has, in many senses, only one device (the iphone and ipad are not that different). If they can stop the iphone OR the ipad, they don't need to settle, they can keep devices off the market for weeks, months or even permanently (if it's a hardware issue).
Keep in mind that most apple devices are produced BEFORE THE FIRST PIECE IS SOLD. So once google stops a device, apple's sales stop for a year (or so). apple can throw all what it made in the sea, or ship them overseas.
Also keep in mind, that most development and it's financial backing (as in app sales), is within US borders. This means IOS will effectively die.
BUT
What's hard to believe, is that both parties needed the existence of each other. In this case, each of them needed a competitor (though they each wanted the bigger piece of the pie). Economics says that competition creates demand, and in some cases vice versa. Ex: look at Pepsi and coke. They gained by competing, through keeping the other soda manufacturers out. The war between these two tech giants helped them sell devices.
Part of the reason that the current situation got so ugly, is that the market has a new competitor, a crappy one too (apple and Google's wet dream). Microsoft has taken apple's closed stance. This allows for the existence of google, not apple, as it is a more direct competition with the latter. Microsoft also gains if it remains in the market with Android, even as a weaker party, because it gets so much money off most android manufacturers (through licensing settlements) .
This whole situation is a move to drive apple out of the market. Apple's is clawing everyone cause it knows that it's being choked. Apple will not hold back any card that will keep it alive, even suing a search engine for searching for stuff.
THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

It's all been dramatized to elicit blog clicks. Nothing will be the end or death or ruin of either of them, they'll just posture enough and setup a convincing enough legal threat by building precedent with these little cases until they're forced into some sort of cross licensing deal. It's business, not politics, or religion. Don't believe the hype.
Well patent for notification center will be an exact stop point for Apple because they have only few devices that uses same OS. It's not the same as Android where one condition applies to a minority of devices.
Apple is destined to die anyway. Their biggest innovation in the last few years was providing more density to their devices as I've said in another thread.

Google just being quite. thats all. They wanted all the crApple and its user just use their Google product only. If only they dont have that, Apple would be long gone. Most technology used in Apple, are from Google(i think so...). and if Samsung, HTC and others join forces and stating each of their patent used by Apple, its done. the thing is, other companies actually wanted a healthy competition, which is totally different than how Apple see it, cuz they are out of ideas and forgot how to innovate!
I have yet to understand why Google hasn't sued apple back. For example, one of apples newest features is from android. The feature in which when you receive a call you can reply back with a text stating "i am driving" for instance. Meanwhile, the apple notification Center was biggest steal ever. the idea of joining forces may seem childish to some, but a quick look at the Rockstar Consortium should change their minds. The problem with that idea is that apple is not their #1 competitor, other android manufacturers are. Google is the only party that can lead a case against apple (on software at least), and Google has been holding back since the start.
My guess is that, that's about to change

I don't. A co-worker of mine has a college aged daughter who went to an orientation where they were doing some kind of ice breaker game. Anyway, the student gathered around in a circle and they would ask these student something and depending on the answer they would step in the circle. So they asked "whoever didn't have an iPhone step in the circle" and she was the only one to step inside. She felt so bad she's going to buy an iPhone just to be like everyone else. Yeah two of my gf's ladies friends only bought iPhones because "everyone has one" I lol'ed and said well more people have android. Then the most painful thing I have done with a phone and that's including rooting. I had to set a mp3 as ringtone for one of her friends iphone.....dear god I didn't think I was going to be able to do it

Yes adding media outside of iTunes sucks. And god forbid you have to use a different computer than the one the iPhone was originally synced on.
i agree with many points. but in my opinion google isn´t so much interested in producing and selling mobile phones. it´s more to keep people related to google itself. the search, email, chat, google+ etc... and i think there´s much more. the accounts and usage of them are important for google itself. the hardware developers samsung htc etc... they sell phones to make money with hardware, google with android and google products. i think android would be enough for supply and demand, because that´s the competition of the hardware-manufacturers (samsung, htc, etc...). i think the mainreasons is the market to keep android alive. as u see with nexus7, google isn´t interested in selling hardware, just to get their software sold. 200$ isn´t much for the hardware. google wants to sell the hardware a) to get as many people to google b) to ace apple out of the market. google makes money with selling software over their market. and with the new market, tv, movies and more. on the other hand, if more people get android, less will stay with apple.
may be, google will become monopolist on the market. dunno, dislike apple and me as customer, i profit from google products. as in op, the policy is more friendly of google than apple.

They just got the patent for water damage detection and the shape of the macbook air... aka just a thin "wedge" shape... and something extremely similar to Google glass.

i understand the concept started in 2017, but for longevity and support, it really should have started with full Treble support.
maybe a few more rounds of hardware design refinement first (like proper usb-c compatibility and complete standard mobile feature set, maybe camera that can swivel front to back if they only put in one, and some way to use the touchscreen without opening the clamshell like maybe i dunno a slider style instead?)
and software refinement (like not including the MTKlogger spyware the FTC scolded BLU and ADUPS about earlier this month) but they get awesome points for their releasing source codes so quickly unlike the usual suspects, and even more bonus points for the linux dual boot as well.
this is all based on the reviews. (edit: and forum posts by users at oesf)
anyway, i'm looking forward to the next gen version of this to replace my CM KK Relay slider finally.

i've already looked through many pictures, read through multiple reviews across the web, read forum posts (here and oesf which has a running list of known issues) from people who have used the product.
basic science: "does it replicate? yes".
anyone that has done sufficient research on a topic will find that others have already performed the same studies and reached the same conclusions, so no need to repeat the process as it has already been verified.
anyway, back to waiting for the next gen version with the first round awkwardness worked out.
meanwhile, the "gpd win 2" that kept getting mentioned in comparison (though not android mobile device) seems kinda interesting. hopefully a "gemini 2" is a similarly notable improvement compared to the first as i'm much more a fan of Sliderrrsss.

Boy, you sure are a...douche
The GPD Pocket and Win2 are complete crap compared to the Gemini. I couldn't even browse the internet without major slowdowns and stuttering on the Pocket. The CPU is simply too underpowered for anything legitimate.
You're the expert though, keep holding out for the next gen sweetheart.

y u mad bro? insert actually applicable saying about insults being the refuge of etc.
it is generally considered common for most tech to not get things perfect on the first iteration, instead pushing alpha or beta quality something out the door that people can see, to get more money, research, field testing, and do it better the next time.
(this is why mission critical businesses tend towards the "i'll wait for sp1 to come out before upgrading the OS" mindset exists)
so if you were personally involved in the production of the device and decided to take offense, then i'm super sorry if your feelings got hurt. but you seem to be in a grumpy mood so i hope you have a good rest of your day though :fingers-crossed:
anyway, i'm gonna point the Relay users to keep an eye on this company, since they look likely to produce a promising mobile replacement (unlike the "gpd win 2", which is the only gpd device i mentioned, as i already stated is not a comparable mobile product, like apples to oranges, laptops to mobiles lolz).
