[Q] sprint hotspot charges (daily vs. monthly)? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I've read in various places that you should be able to activate your sprint wireless hotspot and then cancel the service the next day, so that the cost is a more reasonable $1/day.
Can anyone confirm if this is true? Most of the articles when the EVO and Epic came out claimed that it was so, but I've never seen confirmation from anyone who tried it.
I think $30/month, if only used for a day or two is a serious ripoff, but if I can activate/deactivate so that the cost is more like $1/day, then I'm more amenable to it.
PS. yes, I know I can root, and try to get it for free, but I want to know my options. I don't mind $1/day. I do mind $30 for a day, and then if I forget to turn it off, another $30/month ongoing.

My mother-in-law did it for 3 days when we visited with her Evo. Don't know how often you can do that though. *2 for the real answer.

[Q] Can you tether a non activated phone to the Epic?

Ok...I have an old Blackberry and was thinking of using it for gps while fishing. The problem being it is no longer activated. I haven't tried but can I tether it to my Epic if I need data?
Almost certain none of Sprint's old Blackberries have wifi so no.

That's what I was thinking.
I don't mind getting the old phone wet if it so happens. I do however mind getting my badass Epic wet. I also haven't found an app that lets me do exactly what I want with the Epic. I have one on the BB that allows me to edit waypoints and then map them for future reference. Biggest issue is not wanting to use the touchscreen with wet hands.

Exactly why I got the Epic...I was hoping for a usb method. Guess I'll have to find another way.
There aren't any cables to support it, and there definitely isn't any software either.

If it has wifi then yes you can tether to it. My buddy has an og droid with cancelled service and he makes calls, gps, texts, email from tethering to me.

I like my Inc2 ten times better than my Fascinate. The GPS actually works in this device. I also get great battery life and there is no lag for me.
Here is a similar post from AC http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-droid-incredible-2/107364-any-dinc2-users-coming-fascinate-2.html#post1146594
The Dinc2 is extremely well endowed compare to the Fascinate, it has got both length and girth, you will be very satisfied with it I'm sure.
Seriously, we exchanged both our fascinates for the Dinc2 two weeks ago and love the new phone, wondered why we didn't do it sooner.
I had a fascinate, and would not go back. Build quiality seems better, GPS works, battery lasts longer, and in general, it's a lot less work to maintain, even if you're flash happy. No odin here obviously, but once it's rooted and setup, it's a breeze.
If you want a good phone go with the Inc 2. The smart play would be getting a Charge so your grandfathered in on 4G and wont have to pay more later on.

I had this same convo with vz on Sunday except I have a problematic droid 2 global. The after going back and forth and "supervisor approval" they agreed to send me a dinc2 in place of my droid 2 global free. The only catch was I had to meet them half way and buy a battery door and battery for it. Money well spent if you ask me. They were cheap on amazon. It hasn't arrived yet but I've heard nothing but good stuff about the dinc2. Can't be worst then my d2g.

You may be grandfathered into unlimited data for 3G but that doesnt mean 4G. When they start charging the extra for it youll still be on unlimited but data will be 45 a month not 30. Thats what I mean.

Well from a common sense stand point lets look at other competitors. Sprint, 10 dollars a month extra for "Premium data". T-Mobile after a certain amount you lose your 4G speeds and drop down to almost 2G speeds. And not to mention my cousin is the head engineer for western Arizona and that came straight from him. 4G is expensive to offer and maintain.
Hers what I found about upgrading to 4g. http://www.droid-life.com/2011/06/2...g-to-4g-after-july-7-can-keep-unlimited-data/i couldn't find anything about raising 4g prices.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using XDA App
I actually asked tier 2 tech when I was on the phone. he said they aren't able to talk about it with customers because nothing has Bern discussed yet. but that as long as you're grandfathered into unlimited data he doesn't think they will charge us more for 4g. so technically not proof, but I'd tale.his word over rumors. which is exactly what he said that is, rumors.

USB 4G Tether

Wanted to share this with anyone who isn't aware. We can tether our ET4G on 4G but it requires USB and a 3rd party app. I tested it tonight with the free version of EasyTether and it works like a charm. Not personally interested in spending $10 for the full app but to some it may be worth it.
I haven't tested Klink but it's only $4 and it may work as well as a cheaper alternative.

Sweet, checking that out now. I see the free version doesn't allow https. I'll have to download the app to see how much the full version costs because I don't see it listed in the market.
To use these tethering method doesn't required the phone to be rooted, right? Also, will I be charged if I try to use it and can sprint figure out that I am tethering for free? I don't want to get a bill for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. How safe it is to tether undetected and are lots of people doing it for free with no penalty? I would like to tether for free but am just too afraid of getting caught and charged for it.
To be honest with you I used to have AT&T and now I have sprint and i've never once got a txt or anything in the mail telling me to stop. On AT&T I was running Cyanogen Mod and on my ET4G i'm running Calkulin's which has NoCIQ. If you aren't familiar with NoCIQ it basically makes it so sprint can't tell how your phone is using the data.
I wouldn't trust tethering if you're running a stock rom, even if the dev of the software says it's safe.

I think you might want to quantify your statement regarding NoCIQ. I've yet to see any published report from any reliable source showing it being used for data measurement. All a carrier has to do is look for unusual spikes in data volume.

I've had an android on sprint for almost 2 years now, always rooted, always tethering, always stock rom. Ciq still on there. They have never told me anything. And I always use 3rd party apps for tethering. I honestly don't think they know/care. At the end of the day, it works for the most of us, and we don't really abuse it; thus, they really shouldn't have a problem with it. They're bull**** hot spot app from sprint is ridiculously slow anyway. There's a huge difference in speed... its almost like they want us to find our own way of tethering lol.
That's my rationale and I'm sticking to it.

I've been using Wireless Tether for Root Users, it's free and works with 4G. I'm new to the 4G scene, having recently upgraded from a CDMA Hero but I've used it for years without problem. The only downside to it is it will read as an adhoc network.
I have no idea how the data looks to Sprint, I have yet to see them care.

I read a huge thread explaining all the fine print about tethering. But even worse, Verizon and att MUST allow free tethering as said by the FCC. I'm honestly thinking about researching everything getting all the details sorted out and bringing it forth to the FCC. Cause apparently the way they tell if you're tethering is by packet sniffing. And from what I understand, that's illegal period. Even if it's included in the TOS. That's my private data they are sniffing.

I am thinking to just upgrade from SGSII to the newest II; i like the fact the screen is more crispy; at least what i saw in store. With my SII in 11 month I never had problems with thetering but I only have used it to connect to internet my laptop at work to read email or to the company web portal for ticketing closing and management, only few minutes at the time..
I really don't know if the jump is worthy...I got old Juggernaut v3.7 on my SGSII...had it for 11 months now..if i upgrade, will pay full price for the III.

How about if you want tethering, you pay for it and do it legally. Sprint will be seriously cracking down on unauthorized tethering with the new Network Vision network controls.

I don't use my data that much, maybe about 2GB a month, but I still hate the fact that every company want to charge for tier pricing. But the idea of the company able to charge for the service it doesn't do anything is insane. Sure if you want to let the company do so then go ahead, but then if you can do it yourself, then it become self service and you shouldn't have to pay. This is like they should be able to charge extra a month if you let you friend borrow your phone to make a call or to use 3rd party headset. Majority of people don't actually share the bandwidth with other people but rather to use the data of themself on another device.
Wifi Tether for Root user's doesn't work for anyone? Seems to for me when I set the profile to Samsung Galaxy Nexus CDMA/LTE.

Hmm what version is your WiFi tether app?
And what Setting-Method do you use?
Is your encryption on?

3.2-beta2
Device Profile - Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE)
Everything else I believe is defaults
Just for testing I do not have encryption on

So a buddy recommended this app because it worked before: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.seifsoft.togglepanel
And SURE ENOUGH it activates the built in hot spot! This means its bypassing the entitlement check!
I paid $1.00 and activated used the toggle app to activate hot spot and it connected and I could surf....

not working for me either. so, possibly some change you made may still be there and could be the key to unlocking tethering.

Its been a while since I have been on Sprint. A long while... But I think a change to android.policy.jar resolved the issue last time.

If I remember correctly it, at least in previous flavors, has been in services.jar. But a lot of smali needs to take place in order for it to work, again the last time I messed with it though was back in the GB days.
