[Q] Update to 2.29.405.5 - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have a debranded desire with 2.29.405.2 I would like to update to 405.5 I have been through the large thread but nothing has worked. I am also stuggling to download roms off shipped roms. They just end early and currupt the zip. Please help.

Flash an RUU or take one of the pre-rooted stock roms. Make sure you have a Goldcard too since you probably need it.

Because you have debranded phone you will need goldcard. Be shure you have it.

Hi Guys
I managed to get the latest update by rooting with unrevoked and then executing the RUU. It has worked however I am having issues with the location services. My phone seem incapable of getting location using the network. GPS is fine, I think it may be my radio version which is
5.11.05.27. Any ideas?

This is why you don't update a rooted phone unless you use an RUU. Download the 2.29.405.5 RUU from this link and then root once you're done:
http://www.multiupload.com/LEJCW182AH
You might wanna try a hard reset first, though, as this might solve it. The radio is correct as it's included in the ROM. I have no issues with anything on my phone

Your link is pushing suspicious download manager instead of file itself, so I would appreciate if you could remove it.

Seeing as the link is over 4 years old it's no surprise it doesn't work any more

[Q] 2.2 OTA update issues

Hi guys,
I have a Desire I bought unlocked on eBay. Though initially thinking it was factory unlocked, and having bought it under that pretense, I now think it's been unlocked by some other means. It doesn't appear to be rooted, having no superuser app but I'm not sure how else it could have been unlocked? If any one can shed some light here, that would be great.
I received the OTA update tonight, and after downloading and resetting it simply wouldn't get past 90% on the install before resetting itself. After about 15 minutes I switched it off and switched it on again, and it booted into my homescreen, with a "loading" alert and a rotating circle, no percentage.
Eventually that stopped, and it looked like everything was ok. I checked the version and it said I was running 2.2. Awesome, so I go about my business and realise I have no 3G or wireless connections. I check the settings and under WiFi it says "error", and I can't enable it. My APN is gone too. I can get that online, but it seems like there's an issue with the radio so I haven't bothered. It doesn't connect to the network anyway. It also resets occasionally, it seems when it has to load SenseUI but I can't confirm this.
What could it be? I'm not sure where the phone came from. It's a Black a8181 model with the Orange case branding, but the OS is unbranded. The locale is English (Singapore/Taiwan/a few others), though I thought the Black model was only in the UK. I'm in Australia, on vodafoneAU.
Is there anything I can do?
Cheers guys, I really hope I haven't (basically) bricked it.
Firstly, removing the SIM lock from the phone has nothing to do with rooting. Usually, you just stick in an "incorrect" SIM, and it will ask for an unlock code which you can buy online.
Given that the OTA update was a patch, it sounds to me like you have a partially patched ROM and this is causing your problems.
However, since it basically boots up and works to a fashion, it isn't bricked and chances are it is fairly easily recovered.
IMHO, you have two options.
1. Install a 2.1 RUU to downgrade your phone.
2. Root the phone using UnreEVOked and load a custom 2.2 ROM.
Both of these should be quite easily so long as your previous attempt to upgrade hasn't already updated HBOOT.
Turn you phone off and then power on again whilst holding down the volume down button - your phone should boot into HBOOT.
Look for the HBOOT version on the second line and post back what it says here.
Regards,
Dave
You've received a branded phone that has been debranded (you should have been told this) - you can't upgrade these without a goldcard. What's happened is part of the upgrade has worked, but other parts failed.
To recover you'll need a goldcard, which will be more difficult to make with the phone rebooting all the time.

If the OP can get UnrEVOked running, and doesn't mind having a custom recovery image (good thing!), he/she shouldn't need a goldcard.

That's true, though it does mean going down the custom ROM route, which might not be wanted.
Thanks guys, that's really good info.
I'm not too concerned about running custom ROMs, I've been thinking about doing it for a while, just don't know enough about how to root and flash. There are some good guides here, I'm just a bit nervous about doing it. I also don't know what the best ROM would be. I'm really just after a factory standard Desire with Sense ROM, the most out of the box it could be.
I assume an RUU is like a rollback? In which case, what would I be rolling back to. I have no idea how it was debranded, so I don't know what ROM I'd need to roll back to.
As for the goldcard, what would that do? Is that rolling back, or fixing what I have now? It doesn't crash too often, I can probably baby it through.
Sorry for the questions guys, just want to know my options. I didn't think it was too badly bricked, but you never know. I bricked my XDA Mini II trying to flash a new ROM, so you can see my hesitation :/
An RUU is an official way to flash the phone with HTC's own software. That is how the phone was debranded in the first place, and you can do the same to get it back to normal. It does require a goldcard though, which is a minor software patch on the sdcard.
If you root and install a custom ROM (and update the radio) you'll have a working phone again, and you can make a goldcard in your own time.
If I go with an RUU, will OTA updates work? That's really the only thing I'd miss about a custom ROM, the convenience of OTA.

You'll get ota updates if you use an ruu. Just make sure you have your goldcard in when you apply them.

Cool, will the process in the link in your sig do the trick? And the goldcard, will I need to keep it in permanently, or only when updating? Trying to decide if I should use a dedicated card for it, or include it on the card I keep in there.
Thanks for the help, I'll run the RUU tomorrow morning.
I'm trying to run unrevoked to root and reflash it, but it get's to a point and fails, saying "failed to flash recovery image".
Any thoughts?
EDIT:
I've now created a goldcard and am trying the downgrade process in the link in your sig. I've followed all the instructions, but when I ran the downgrade util, after asking for my password, nothing happens.

Yeah, that's my fault for leaving a testing point in the Mac/Linux version of the utility. It was mentioned in the bugs section, but probably not made clear enough. It's fixed now.

[Q] Root question

Hi guys, got my Orange-branded uk desire a couple of days ago and have been reading up on rooting etc ever since.
In homage to my username, i'm following this to remove the carrier software:
(rootmydroid.cx.ux/) guides/general/howto-root-your-htc-desire-wildfire-evo-incredible-with-unrevoked/
I'm at step 3. My question is where can i find the most up-to-date official htc rom to flash onto my desire? I know a google search will give me loads of choices, but a lot are now months old and I'm keen not to flash an old version - im running 2.2 at the moment, but i basically just want an unbranded phone without the hassle of making a goldcard.
Is there one single file out there that i need? or will it consist of seperate rom and a radio files? Will the rom come as a .zip or .exe?
I know its a basic question, and once i've got the answer i'll leave you alone and follow the guide myself....just didnt want to flash with unrevoked, and not have a rom to reflash!
if it helps, these are my details:
bravo pvt4 ship s-on
hboot 0.93.0001
micro 051d
touch panel synt0101
radio 5.10.5.30
Thanks in advance!
Hi,
You will need a Goldcard if you're moving off an Orange rom even if you're going to stock HTC.
This is the first thing to do before going any further.
As for an upto date stock unbranded rom, see http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.exe
You will need to run this RUU on your PC while your phone is connected in fastboot mode.
Please be aware tho, that there isn't an Orange RUU available at the moment so going back to an Orange stock rom could be an issue.
Oh, and do a nand backup as soon as you have rooted.
Mike

Ah right, ok
I was under the impression that loading a rom via unevoked would effectively overwrite the rom i have now, meaning the carrier's applications would be removed in the process?
I guess a complete debrand isn't what I'm after - I don't mind if i still have the Orange logo on start-up (I don't want to unlock it from the Orange network either), as long as there are none of their applications like Orange Maps and Orange Photos when I'm actually using the phone.
Would i still need a goldcard for that? Or would i be able to follow the guide in the link in my first post, flashing the rom you suggested at stage 3?
Thanks in advance!
If you're going to go to a stock, unrooted, unbranded ROM then you won't be able to restore a nandroid backup as you need root!!
First thing, as said, is to make a gold card. Then use it to flash the 2.29.405.2 RUU. Then see how you get on as it is. If you still don't think it's doing what you need it to then root and go for a custom ROM
Right, ive created a goldcard using a guide on the unlockr.com
The website provides links to desire rooting tools 0.75 or 0.80 bootloaders, however mine is 0.93.0001. Can anyone offer any guidance please?
Thanks in advance!
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
can i use that with a goldcard to just debrand then? thought that was only for rooting?

The stock rom (or pretty near to stock) you posted a while back eddy was good enough for his needs do you think?
I think Frankdroid did a variation in your thread of it with root and a2sd+. I was using it for a while and battery was good and the rom smooth enough.

Right...
If you just wanna debrand, as is get rid of the Orange crap, and not be rooted then all you need is a gold card and the RUU from my signature. This will give you a stock, unbranded HTC ROM
If you wanna root and go for a custom ROM, use unrEVOked
yea, i just wanna get rid of the Orange crap. I've made my goldcard, following a guide on theunlockr .com, but have come unstuck when it lists some downloads for certain bootloaders that would allow me to run the RUU, however my bootloader is a lot newer so i wasnt sure where i go from here, now that i've made my goldcard
I've downloaded the RUU, but when i run the .exe, is says its not a valid win32 application....?
Basically i've got a goldcard and the ruu. How do i now get it loaded on my phone?
Which RUU did you download? Latest unbranded one is the one in my signature. Ignore guides online as they've not been updated for months
ive got the ruu from your sig. Goldcard was made following an old guide on the web. Will this be ok?
just not sure where to go next in terms of actually getting the ruu on my phone with the goldcard
Gold card guide is fine. That RUU is also fine as it's my upload and is the one I use myself (using Windows 7 Ultimate x64). Don't know why your version of Windows won't run it - unless it's a corrupt download
yeah, weird. Using Win xp. I'll redownload the ruu in your sig. Once i've got it, what do i do? Turn on phone with power/vol down? Then what do i need to select? I'm guessing once im in the right section, i just connect phone to pc, and just run the ruu .exe?
Sorry, loads of basic q's, appreciate your help!
Turn phone on holding the back button and you'll be in FASTBOOT. Connect to the PC and once your Desire says FASTBOOT USB run the RUU

It worked! Thanks a lot for your help EddyOS

I need to bring my phone back to sprint I tried all UNROOT methods but my USB is broke and when I try to USE the PC36IMG.zip I get an error saying something like (update is older ect..) so I got the idea that if I flash a old rom before the updates and just update my phone it will unroot me but the problem I cant find a flashable rom thats old since we moved on so much since the EVO came out???
I just had to do this two days ago. You need an updated image file, it's posted in the unrooting thread in this forum. I'm on my cell so it'll take me a while to post a link. Give me a minute.

Unless they see his s-off in hboot.
They know to check the bootloader. Just install one of the official ruu to unroot. Simple as that. I've done it.
Official RUU
Just flash an official ruu and you will be good to go. You can find them all over the place in here.
3.70 (latest RUU)
Below is a link to the very latest RUU possible so that you're phone can be brought back to stock status without root. I would recommend flashing the S-On tool also which I'll post as the second link too. The first link is to the RUU. Good luck
Official RUU (will unroot your phone/rom)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874091&highlight=ruus
The Unrevoked S-On Tool:
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever-son.zip
EDIT: Also, I was thinking, if the above won't work due to your USB issues, maybe you could flash another rom, a sense based rom, like from Flipz or someone, and then run the "system update" program from the phone and maybe it'll update you to the latest RUU using the OTA Update program. That may solve your issues for getting the phone back to stock status without SU app and without root. Then, if that works, I would reboot the phone in to the bootloader and check to see if it says S-off or S-on. If it says S-on, you're fine and ready to go to sprint. If it says S-off, download and run the unrevoked S-on tool I posted above. Hopefully you won't need USB for it to run properly, but hey, you never know. Either way, if it does, there's got to be a way to use a S-on tool out there that doesn't need USB access. Hope this info helps you out in any way possible
EDIT #2: Read the stuff in this post to help with things if the above won't work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141&highlight=ruus
When it says to connect USB and put the files on the SD Card, just use a card reader via a laptop or something to put the files on the SD Card and continue on.
I have taken my phone to sprint service centers 3 times. 2 speaker replacements, 2 screen replacements, a camera lens replacement (combined with a screen replacement, and they replaced the whole front of the phone - no more dents all around the shiny black bezel).
I always insisted they not replace the phone, as I wanna keep my 0002 HW. My phone was root with custom rom, but with a ''back to stock" theme flashed on it (thanks Virus)
My bootscreen is black (not white) with white evo 4g text, so, as soon as they turn my phone on it's obvious it's custom.
I know this isn't as helpful as previous posts, I'm just saying worst-case-scenario flash a stock theme and you'll probably be fine. I've had more than one tech tell me 'as long as you try to make it look stock, make the effort, that's good enough'.
Especially given that it's a hardware related issue, rather than a SW issue - I mean, they wont blame root access for your USB port not working.
Good luck, hope you get it sorted either way.

How old of a ROM are you looking for? There are plenty of 3.30 Software roms. Myn's RLS4 is 3.30 software, RLS3 is 3.29, etc. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8341836 That's a link to Myn's thread. Look in post #3, all of his older releases are linked there. Also, if you look in Myn's Signature, there's a link to OTA Supersonic 3.29, stock, rooted base rom.
With all that said, I don't think that will remedy you're 'main version older' problem. I believe it checks your hboot version, or radio versions or something. Not the actual software version. I could be wrong, but I believe that's the case. I would try a couple of the different PC36IMG's in this thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060&highlight=hboot-0.97+ruu. It has all of the recent versions. If thew newest PC36IMG doesn't work, try the next older one (3.30) etc. One of them is bound to work for you. Good luck.
Some people have a 2nd Gmail account that isn't tied to any root apps incase the techs at sprint get nosey and look where they shouldn't be....
.........at 8 am today someone poisons the coffee....do not drink the coffee. More instructions will follow.

When I did unroot, I restored my nandroid from before I installed ota 3.70, then unistall superuser (won't go away if you do a wipe), once your good to go, then use ra recovery to flash the official 3.70 ota, don't reboot once that completes, then flash s-on, then reboot you phone. I would recomend pulling ur sd card before taking it in, and doing a data wipe just to make sure all signs of root are gone

[Q][SOLVED] Manually upgrade to newer stock ROM?

I managed to unroot and back to stock 1.34 for my Desire Z in order to have warranty back to fix its shut down issue. But I found out that this version is different than the stock that I had when I bought it (I live in Vietnam so it has Vietnames language with higher version number 1.72 I think?).
So my question is can I manually upgrade it to newer version in shipped-roms . com ? If so then how?
If it cannot be done then does HTC support care whether my phone has the stock firmware for my region in order to have is repaired or just unroot S-On is ok?
Thanks
EDIT: I found about the RUU file, trying to update that way, will report back...
EDIT: Confirmed, just run the RUU.exe file and it will update to newer version!

Am i about to kill my HD?

I have a Orange branded DHD, unlocked via IMEI, running 2.3.3, i want to install the HTC rom as i have been told it comes with far less bloatware.
I do want a genuine rom though, rather than a cooked version, so have opted for the HTC rom. I found and downloaded the following file which claims to be what i need.
Am i correct?
RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.36.405.8_R_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_187331_signed
Also, as it is a genuine rom, do i still need to do all that "rooting" business?
Or can i go ahead and install/flash?
Thanks for any possible help or tips.

If your phone is allready rooted then, after installing the new Official ROM it will be unrooted again, You can try downgrading to the official 1.3x version and then update from HTC direclty. I dont know if you gonna have any problems
because your phone is branded, but i dont rly think so. Im just a user using roms etc, have no idea for further instructions!
Considering you paid a hefty sum for your Desire HD, i strongly recommend you first find your branded rom somewhere in the dev forum first. Just in case you have to reflash teh stock rom for warranty issues. For the rest, I also recommend downgrading to 1.3x first and then flashing whatever you want (cooked roms need s-offs and root). I have a guide in my sig on how to root, s-off and flash a rom, however, stock roms are executables from what i know so you might not need to follow my guide just plug in your dhd with drivers installed and let the exe do its work. Regarding downgrading, you will find a link in my thread to the "Downgrading to 1.3x thread". Have fun
Edit:
I know of 3 ways to brick your dhd:
1. Partitioning your sd card with clockwork mod recovery 3.0.2.5
2. Editing some esf files or something and mistyping something

So, don't worry so much, it's not a galaxy S
Yes, the file i have is an executable file. I think it is the most recent genuine HTC rom available for this device.
So, that being said, i should not need to root or downgrade etc? Just double click & go?
Surly you should not have to root your device when wanting to install a different, but still genuine rom?
I have found it very difficult to locate stock roms for this device.
Going to have another search now, but if anyone knows a shortcut, i'd be more than gratefull

You will need to downgrade first as your device is branded. Once downgraded just run the RUU and Bobs your mothers brother.
If you have an orange dhd you will need the orange upgrade. I'm pretty sure if you try to use a different one it won't let you do it. I'm not 100‰on this.
I used to get android updates for T-Mobile brand off the T-Mobile website.

Which is why you need to downgrade.
@ ghostofcain
And to downgrade is it just a simple rom flash? Or do i need to root or s-off etc first?
I know this would be the case with cooked roms, but i'm only talking about Genuine releases here.
I'm currently running an Orange branded 2.3.3 ROM, so if i simply flash an older rom to the device, then i am all set to flash the newest HTC generic rom to the Desire, right?
That older rom i need to flash first, it would have to be Orange branded too right? Is there any chance you could give me it's exact name or provide a link?
Thanks greatly for the help.

Once you have downgraded you don't need root or s-off to flash the RUU and you don't have to flash an orange branded one. You can flash any updated .exe.
if I have time ill find you a link..
*EDIT*
Also bear in mind if you flash the orange ruu. Or any other branded rom. It will still have all the bloatware you are trying to get rid of.
You must flash a standard HTC one. Go to the HTC website and download the official update from there. You will need to downgrade first though.

That's the problem, the HTC 2.3.3 rom was only ever released OTA, and is not available to download from their website.
Although i think i have managed to find the ".exe" version of that rom.
RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.36.405.8_R_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_187331_signed
From what i can tell, this seems to be the newest, Genuine HTC 2.3.3 rom for the Desire HD.
So, i just need to downgrade and then install this right?
So what do i need & what do i do to downgrade, bearing in mind what i currently have installed?

follow this guide. downgrade to 1.32 and then flash the ruu you have. don't worry if its not the right one it won't install it if it's wrong. hit the thanks button if I've helped.

Ok, so where would i find this 1.32 rom?
Also, when i have this HTC rom loaded on, will i still receive any OTA updates? And would they be HTC branded one's from that point on?

the 1.32 downgrade should be in the link I sent you. I'm not sure about the ota updates. its seriously worth considering doing a full root after you dg and try out some of the fantastic roms some of which are kept as stock but you have more options and root privilages.

You have to downgrade and use a goldcard to de-brand your phone. You cannot flash a standard WWE ROM on a branded phone. After you have completed the steps of de-branding and flashing the latest WWE ROM.... OTA updates may or may not work.
Everything you have asked about is already thoroughly documented elsewhere in the forum and I suggest you go read all the stickies. Do not do anything with your phone that you do not fully understand as you could run into problems.
With Regards to warranty and such-like that people have mentioned, HTC don't really care what you do to the phone software-wise, they might have a problem if you returned it too them in pieces claiming that it just came out of your pocket that way.
Just read everything here and you should be good to go.
Peace.
