[Q][SOLVED] Manually upgrade to newer stock ROM? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I managed to unroot and back to stock 1.34 for my Desire Z in order to have warranty back to fix its shut down issue. But I found out that this version is different than the stock that I had when I bought it (I live in Vietnam so it has Vietnames language with higher version number 1.72 I think?).
So my question is can I manually upgrade it to newer version in shipped-roms . com ? If so then how?
If it cannot be done then does HTC support care whether my phone has the stock firmware for my region in order to have is repaired or just unroot S-On is ok?
Thanks
EDIT: I found about the RUU file, trying to update that way, will report back...
EDIT: Confirmed, just run the RUU.exe file and it will update to newer version!

I used this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Returning_to_Stock
I used the same guide on this page to root using gfree, so on the first step, I just flash back the PC10IMG.zip that I used when rooting to get back to 1.34 stock and then proceed with next steps to unroot, lastly use this site:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Vision
to get the newer version that I want and just run the .exe file with phone connected to my computer to update it to the version I want.
Glad I could help.
NOTE: This may work for me but may mess up your phone so be careful
EDIT: Sorry, my mistake, I use the root guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261 but I believe it's the same as in the above link.

[Q] Update to 2.29.405.5

I currently have a debranded desire with 2.29.405.2 I would like to update to 405.5 I have been through the large thread but nothing has worked. I am also stuggling to download roms off shipped roms. They just end early and currupt the zip. Please help.
Flash an RUU or take one of the pre-rooted stock roms. Make sure you have a Goldcard too since you probably need it.
Because you have debranded phone you will need goldcard. Be shure you have it.
Hi Guys
I managed to get the latest update by rooting with unrevoked and then executing the RUU. It has worked however I am having issues with the location services. My phone seem incapable of getting location using the network. GPS is fine, I think it may be my radio version which is
5.11.05.27. Any ideas?
This is why you don't update a rooted phone unless you use an RUU. Download the 2.29.405.5 RUU from this link and then root once you're done:
http://www.multiupload.com/LEJCW182AH
You might wanna try a hard reset first, though, as this might solve it. The radio is correct as it's included in the ROM. I have no issues with anything on my phone

[Q] Downgrade from 1.84.666.2

I stupidly updated my Bell Desire Z to 1.84.666.2 the other day. Looking for a way to downgrade to a version that can be rooted.
Found this thread, but it's for a previous update.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
Love this phone but I really want to dump Bell's extra software and Sense.
Please, any helpful input is appreciated!
How far through that guide did you get, what error message? I did 1.84 -> 1.34 to get S-OFF & root.
Following the tutorial got me temp root access but was unable to boot the firmware. I suppose I need to make a goldcard but that tutorial has a few broken links. Anyone want to give me a resource that explains what is going on in that tutorial a little more deeply? I remember reading in a previous forum that 1.8 update could be rolled back.
I'm on a Bell DZ too...
[J]
You will need a goldcard if you don't already have SuperCID via gfree, and you can't find an earlier ROM/RUU that matches your CID.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
I'm getting stuck at step 11. I get to the white bootloader screen and without doing anything the phone does and SD check, looks for PC10DIAG.zip, etc, then finds PC10IMG.zip and checks it. Then I get bumped out to the bootloader list of FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, FACTORY RESET, SIMLOCK and IMAGE CRC.
It's unclear what to do from there. The tutorial says I'll get a prompt to update and restart, but I don't.
Also, the tutorial says I'll need a goldcard (which I created) but no where in the tutorial does it say what to do with it...
I got a goldcard using Gold Card Tool. Just do a google search of "easy goldcard".
I've managed to iron out that issue. I had made a mistake when making the goldcard.
Problem now is that when I get to step 11 the phone says "Model ID incorrect!" then "Update Fail!".
Any ideas?
Where are you getting your PC10IMG from?
From the guide I linked earlier. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261)
I downloaded the full RUU and renamed the extracted rom.zip.
I had goldcard issues (broken links) so I got the rom that matched my current region. I then did the temp root, modded the version info and let the phone try the update. Once I got it all sorted it worked as is said in the guide. I don't know if the goldcard tool worked or not, I think not as I wanted to change the Asian phone to WWE but had to go down to Asian 1.34 then go S-OFF and then go WWE. Maybe an extra step but it worked.
How do I find a rom that matches my current region?
The desire z was purchased from Bell Mobility in Canada and is now being used on Rogers.
This thread may be of help to you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029821
Thanks for that link! I basically did as the guy said and used the link to the 1.34.666.1 rom you linked in that thread. Only difference was I uploaded it to the SD and the issued the command adb reboot bootloader. This time no errors and the update worked!
So now I guess I just go ahead with a normal root of a 1.34.666.1 DZ?
Weird thing is the guy in that other thread said he got S-Off from doing this update... On my phone it's still S-On.
All you have done is put a rom on the phone that allows S-OFF, I can't see anyway you could get it in a stock rom?!

You should now be able to follow this guide to get S-OFF (as above, I don't see how flashing a stock ROM would do this automatically): http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
So after downgrading I had S-ON. But I just finished the rest of the rooting process in the guide I linked in my original post and got root!
What a process. That must have taken 12 hours or more. I should really post a new guide with more complete info.
Thanks for the help guys!
Now that I have root and S-Off downgrading from 1.84.666.2 to 1.34.666.1 using the processes DVDWSN did. Now I thought I could go back to 1.84.666.2 using OTA like I upgraded the first time. But when I try to do OTA, I get the message I do not have any new version. What gives?
If you are trying to downgrade do not touch OTA updates lol. Anyways, what you want to do is temp root your phone so you can 'spoof' the radio version the an old one thereby allowing you to flash a radio that can be manipulated. If you aren't sure what to do then try following this guide.

hi boy!!!
I estimate that you have specifically android 2.2.1...right?
i hope that your software version is adapted for your carrier.... and is not a WEE ruu... its normal... my DHD by default was been 1.33
u can try via htc sync and click in upgrade button and pray for it to work....
i know that some people was update succesfully his DHD with it...
or try to do it with the XDA style, lol.....(because for downgrade it directly from a official ru downloaded it´s impossible)
1-downgrading...(necessary)
2-rooting...(necessary)
3-install rom manager & CWM recovery (necessary)
4-eng-soff
5-radio s-off
6-cid-111111 (super-cid)
here there is information about it:

Downgrading my Z

My desire Z is currently running android 2.2.1.
The downgrade tutorials i have found are from 1.74 to 1.34.
How do i get my phone to 1.74 so i can downgrade to 1.34?
Thanks
which version number are you currently running.
2.2.1 is the android version(a version of froyo)
the 1.74.xxx is the firmware number made by HTC and some may be 2.2.1 and have 1.74.xxx or like me have 1.84.xxx
since you are 2.2.1 you will most likely have to downgrade to a 1.34.xx rom
depending on your carrier you will need a RUU from them, example i have a bell Desire z so i would need a bell RUU. This can be found in one of the stickies near the end, i think its the sticky for roms and everything under development.
Extract the rom.zip from it as stated in the 1.74 to 1.34 downgrade guide. rename to "PC10IMG.zip" place this on the root of your sd card.
Get AMT(advance multi tools) [REMEMBER TO THANKS HIM HE IS AWESOME FOR MAKING THIS APP ] from the developer section and run the downgrade option. Reboot into your bootloader and apply the update voila ur downgraded now you can root or whatever you like.
WARNING: This worked for me i'm a Bell desire z user so it may differ for you and i take no responsibility if you follow this and mess up.
It worked for me so it may work for you if anyone sees a problem with this people speak up.

How do i check which firmware i am running?

Under settings> about phone is software information or something of the sort it will say 1.34.xxx, 1.74.xxx, or 1.84.xxx that is the firmware version. If its 1.34.xx you do not need to downgrade.
Also i ment 1.34.xxx RUU so you may extract the Rom.zip from it
How do i find out what my carrier is?
Your carrier is where you got your phone from such as bell, or t-mobile(G2), or other DZ sellers in europe (i do not know who sells them there)
if you got yours from tmobile the RUU from the guide u posted the link to is good. (follow that guides step 7 to extract the rom.zip from the RUU regardless of which RUU it is)

Did you rename the rom.zip file to PC10IMG.zip, is it already a zip file and you added .zip with the .zip extension automatically hidden by your computer (some computers automatically hide file extensions so really your files name is "PC10IMG.zip.zip" in which case delete the .zip you added. Is your CID one of the ones in that thread at the beginning if not its easier to follow the guide i posted above. Finally is the PC10IMG.zip file on the root directory of your sd card.

In my software info, this is exactly what it says:
Android Version
2.2.1
...
Build Number
1.72.405.2.......
Software Number
1.72.405.2
I bought the phone from ebay, and the seller said it was from carphone warehouse...so what carrier would that be?
My CID is one of the ones listed.
i put the PC10IMG.zip in the home directory of the sd card. should i have put it in one of the folders? if my phone is not the tmobile one, should i find a different file? (RUU?) ie..the file PC10IMG.zip that i have is incorrect?
thanks a lot mate. the problem was the .zip.zip thing. im so annoyed. ive been stuck all weekend lol. thanks
^ lol ya i have seen that happen to alooooot of my friends that is why i have been starting to recommend people checking that out XD i really dislike it when windows tries making things more user friendly but takes away vital information for users who know what they are doing.... they should have a better setup asking what you want hidden and such ughhh.....
What about if the software number is 1.82.xxx.x?
Can I still use the following guide?

Am i about to kill my HD?

I have a Orange branded DHD, unlocked via IMEI, running 2.3.3, i want to install the HTC rom as i have been told it comes with far less bloatware.
I do want a genuine rom though, rather than a cooked version, so have opted for the HTC rom. I found and downloaded the following file which claims to be what i need.
Am i correct?
RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.36.405.8_R_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_187331_signed
Also, as it is a genuine rom, do i still need to do all that "rooting" business?
Or can i go ahead and install/flash?
Thanks for any possible help or tips.

If your phone is allready rooted then, after installing the new Official ROM it will be unrooted again, You can try downgrading to the official 1.3x version and then update from HTC direclty. I dont know if you gonna have any problems
because your phone is branded, but i dont rly think so. Im just a user using roms etc, have no idea for further instructions!
Considering you paid a hefty sum for your Desire HD, i strongly recommend you first find your branded rom somewhere in the dev forum first. Just in case you have to reflash teh stock rom for warranty issues. For the rest, I also recommend downgrading to 1.3x first and then flashing whatever you want (cooked roms need s-offs and root). I have a guide in my sig on how to root, s-off and flash a rom, however, stock roms are executables from what i know so you might not need to follow my guide just plug in your dhd with drivers installed and let the exe do its work. Regarding downgrading, you will find a link in my thread to the "Downgrading to 1.3x thread". Have fun
Edit:
I know of 3 ways to brick your dhd:
1. Partitioning your sd card with clockwork mod recovery 3.0.2.5
2. Editing some esf files or something and mistyping something
3. SMashing your phone into a brick wall repeatedly
So, don't worry so much, it's not a galaxy S
Yes, the file i have is an executable file. I think it is the most recent genuine HTC rom available for this device.
So, that being said, i should not need to root or downgrade etc? Just double click & go?
Surly you should not have to root your device when wanting to install a different, but still genuine rom?
I have found it very difficult to locate stock roms for this device.
Going to have another search now, but if anyone knows a shortcut, i'd be more than gratefull

You will need to downgrade first as your device is branded. Once downgraded just run the RUU and Bobs your mothers brother.
If you have an orange dhd you will need the orange upgrade. I'm pretty sure if you try to use a different one it won't let you do it. I'm not 100‰on this.
I used to get android updates for T-Mobile brand off the T-Mobile website.

@ ghostofcain
And to downgrade is it just a simple rom flash? Or do i need to root or s-off etc first?
I know this would be the case with cooked roms, but i'm only talking about Genuine releases here.
I'm currently running an Orange branded 2.3.3 ROM, so if i simply flash an older rom to the device, then i am all set to flash the newest HTC generic rom to the Desire, right?
That older rom i need to flash first, it would have to be Orange branded too right? Is there any chance you could give me it's exact name or provide a link?
Thanks greatly for the help.

Once you have downgraded you don't need root or s-off to flash the RUU and you don't have to flash an orange branded one. You can flash any updated .exe.
if I have time ill find you a link..
*EDIT*
Also bear in mind if you flash the orange ruu. Or any other branded rom. It will still have all the bloatware you are trying to get rid of.
You must flash a standard HTC one. Go to the HTC website and download the official update from there. You will need to downgrade first though.

That's the problem, the HTC 2.3.3 rom was only ever released OTA, and is not available to download from their website.
Although i think i have managed to find the ".exe" version of that rom.
RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.36.405.8_R_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_187331_signed
From what i can tell, this seems to be the newest, Genuine HTC 2.3.3 rom for the Desire HD.
So, i just need to downgrade and then install this right?
So what do i need & what do i do to downgrade, bearing in mind what i currently have installed?

the 1.32 downgrade should be in the link I sent you. I'm not sure about the ota updates. its seriously worth considering doing a full root after you dg and try out some of the fantastic roms some of which are kept as stock but you have more options and root privilages.

You have to downgrade and use a goldcard to de-brand your phone. You cannot flash a standard WWE ROM on a branded phone. After you have completed the steps of de-branding and flashing the latest WWE ROM.... OTA updates may or may not work.
Everything you have asked about is already thoroughly documented elsewhere in the forum and I suggest you go read all the stickies. Do not do anything with your phone that you do not fully understand as you could run into problems.
With Regards to warranty and such-like that people have mentioned, HTC don't really care what you do to the phone software-wise, they might have a problem if you returned it too them in pieces claiming that it just came out of your pocket that way.
Just read everything here and you should be good to go.
Peace.
