Hello all,
Yesterday I spent some time attempting to root my EVO using autoroot.
Halfway through the process the script timed out (cmd window dissapeared) and my phone was left with a red exclamation point. After a few attempts to pick back up where the process left off (running autoroot again) the phone was unable to be seen by USB. At this point I decided to reinstall from the RUU and started over.
When the RUU was finished the phone came up just fine like a brand new EVO, but now the phone will reboot after being up for about 1 minute after sense finishes loading. The phone cannot be seen by USB with charge only and debugging enabled. The phone will charge, but that's about it. No icons on the notification bar for charge only or USB debug.
I've tried reinstalling from zip and exe RUU multiple times, but no change. Phone keeps rebooting 1 minute after everything loads up.
Any help would be appreciated. I feel like something is not getting cleared by the RUU, but I have no idea what to do at this point. Without the ability to use adb I can't figure out a way to make any progress.
Thanks!

So this is happening after completely restoring with RUU and also with a PC36IMG? Just reboots, and usb isn't working? Have you tried different RUU's or a different PC36IMG, just to be sure? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060&highlight=hboot-0.97+ruu. Maybe you could try removing and reinstalling your sd card? I believe I've seen before where something being corrupted on the sd card could cause reboots, or issues installing an RUU or PC36IMG. Is your bootloader currently showing ship S on or ship S off? (just in case you need to take it to sprint, you want to be s off) I don't believe I've ever seen a similar situation, where it reboots consistenly after a minute of running right after running an RUU or PC36IMG, so I'm not sure on what the actual problem is or how you'd go about fixing it. Thats what PC36IMG or RUU are for, last resort to save your behind, but that is failing on you...
The md5 for the RUU exe in the link you provided does not match the MD5 for the RUU exe I was using. They are named with the same versions...
I will download the 3.70 RUU exe you linked to and then post with the results. I'm going to attempt the RUU with no SD card inserted to verify that it's not related to my issue.
Thanks for your response!

You're welcome, I just hope that you're able to resolve the situation. That is kind of an odd one. Hope the new RUU works for you.
Booted into recovery.
Ran the RUU exe.
Installation complete.
Green circle with evo (updating).
Reboots a couple times.
Evo white screen.
4G boot animation.
Phone starts up.
White HTC screen...
Waiting...
Skipping google activation for now...
Another white HTC screen.
Sense loading spinny circle...
Lock up and reboot.
White Evo screen again...
It'll keep doing this, but it does remember where you were when it restarts each time...
Anyone else got something for me?
I think it's going back to sprint tomorrow. I have the optional insurance on this phone...

Damn. Yea, I think I would take it to sprint. Are you s-on now, after running the RUU's? Hopefully someone else has some more info for you, but I think you'll be needing to make a visit to Sprint. Good luck.

I tried one of the rooting processes today and it didn't work. Now when I turn my Evo on it goes no further than the white HTC screen that you get when you turn it on. When I try to run the RUU it gets a connection error and won't go through. Can someone please help?

If you pull the battery can you get to the bootloader screen? (hold volume down and power button when turning on)
You should be able to do what Greenfieldan suggests. It is possible to work through this issue, so don't fear but it make take a few tries.

Thread stalking is fun, I see which thread you are reading, but you may have to reset you phone.
Do you either:
Have a recovery installed (if you aren't sure, then you may not)
have a PCIMG36 on the root of your sdcard, (if you aren't sure then you may not)

Go in to fastboot and you should see something toward the top that says "FASTBOOT USB", once there run the RUU

I have a pc36img file on the root of my sd card. It says that it can't open it when i select flash zip from sd card.
Just download the actual ruu from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060. It will be one of the .exe files same version of you had on the phone will prolly work best. Then do what xhausx said and run the ruu file once there. Thanks xhausx btw cause i was confused too.

Need Help
I know this is an old thread, but I'm working on an old phone. Hopefully some of you guys are still following this.
My father has an EVO 3D that showed up one day stuck on the white HTC screen. The only remedy was to pull the battery. I thought it would be no big deal to just go into the boot menu and either try and run recovery, or at worst do a factory reset. Both of these options failed. I even made a few attempts at trying from the SD card with a ROM or two. So I downloaded the RUU direct from HTC thinking that would finally take care of the problem. But after connecting up in FASTBOOT mode and running the RUU, it eventually fails when the update gets to the point that it's supposed to restart the phone in bootloader mode. Because at that point the phone just restarts to the white HTC logo again, and the software times out telling me that it can't connect to the device. Any help here other than passing me a trash can Thanks in advance!
Hi guys, Well after trawling through the wealth of information on this site and reading till my eyes bleed I honestly cant seem to fix this.
I was hoping and preying some amazingly talented expert here could maybe point me in the right direction.
Ok so heres whats going on. Got my HTC Desire, Told me there was a system update. So I chose to install ofcourse. Then BAM! for no reason half way through installation the phone dies. Vibrates 7 times and black screen (Searched this too) - nothing.
So pulled battery, waited for a few minutes and put in, power on. Phone gets to HTC (white screen) the freezes. Or even sometimes just switches off and vibrates 7 times again!
So I found An RUU for 3 mobile - RUU_Bravo_H3G_UK_1.22.771.1_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_127568_signed
Tried running it with the phone in fastboot usb
All was going well then reached about 80% and gave me an error code 110. Telling me to download a complete RUU for my device.
Now when I power on the screen is just black, however I know it still has some functionality as I can hear the sound for device connection in Windows when I Power on holding down Vol-
now I thought I would be clever and seeing as whilst my phone was working it downloaded the "correct" update. So checked the sd card and found it in the Downloads folder. Renamed it to PB99IMG and tried booting the phone holding down the back key. But still nothing.
By the way the phone isnt rooted and is very very very new. On 3 mobile UK network.
Can anybody please give me some pointers on how I may be able to go about fixing this? Im sure there has to be some way as it still has "some functionalty" (I think lol)
Also tried the adb method of connecting or re-flashing but device is not found.
Cheers all
Sounds like the RUU is corrupt - what is the file size?
Also, is that the one your Desire came with? If not, that won't work anyway
Also, an OTA shouldn't be named PB99IMG as that's only for RUU files - you rename an OTA update.zip and flash it in recovery. Looks like you've not read enough
Hi, thanks for the quick reply.
The RUU I tried installing that failed was from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
RUU_Bravo_H3G_UK_1.22.771.1_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_127568_signed.exe
Filesize is 153mb. It matched the version number that my htc shipped with and even says when running the RUU that both versions are the same. But as it failed I tried the Update from my network provider that I found on the SD card by renaming to PB99IMG.zip and holding Back and Power down.
Looks like Im buggered I suppose. Im still trying to get my phones CID as Im guessing then I can install any RUU for my phone?
I just cant access anything to get the CID
The PB99IMG can ONLY be used when extracting it from an RUU
The one you got OTA (Over The Air) isn't a full ROM - it's just a 30MB-odd update
Download the RUU from here:
http://www.4shared.com/get/t2SsuYNF...sionid=2D4E782FB44E2CF020622A15F76C1A5A.dc278
(Shipped-ROMs.com can lead to corrupt downloads)
And then follow the guide I attached to this post - it's how to extract the PB99IMG from an RUU:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10509780&postcount=102
Thank you so much! Will try now and let you know how it goes.
Thanks again
Still no good. Its tricky as I cant see the screen to select the options. But Ive followed the guide allowing it enough time to load before choosing yes etc and still no joy. Im not even sure the PBIMG99.zip is loading.
I've even tried running the RUU again from the PC after Holding vol - and Power down and waiting for the sound in windows that its connected. But gives me error code 110 again saying it cannot read files.
Loos like Im going to have to send it back to my supplier. Although Im sure they will blame me for everything and refuse me a new handset! lol
Once you have the correct PB99IMG file, you copy it onto the root of the SD card (not in any folders) and then turn the phone on holding volume down. You don't have to do anything else as it'll find the file and ask if you want to use it
To try the RUU turn the phone on holding the BACK button to get into FASTBOOT, connect to the PC and when it says FASTBOOT USB on the screen of the phone run the RUU
Out of interest, when you boot into HBOOT when info do you see at the top of screen?
Thats the problem. My screen is blank. I used to be able to get into Hboot and fastboot and see the screen. Now I dont see anything. But Im sure its still going into hboot etc as I hear the connection sound windows makes when holding vol and power.
Hope that makes sense?
Edit. I do know that before all went wrong I had hboot 93 or something like that.
Right, sounds like you've flashed a ROM for an AMOLED Desire onto an SLCD one...
Oh! poooooooh. Well thanks for trying. I never even got to use the stupid thing! lol
There is a thread on here to try and use to sort it out - look through the Q&A section
have u fixed it please ?? I got the same problems now......
thx

The thread Eddy referred to, was probably this..You should be able to do it even if blindfolded
My phone is stuck at the white Evo splash screen. This happenned after I performed the autoroot procedure located at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
I have tried all kinds of ways to bring it back with no success. I downloaded shipped roms 3.30 and 3.70 (3.70) is what my phone originally was. The RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.exe will not run on my windows 7 machine I assume it's corrupted and I have downloaded it from two different sources. The RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.30.651.3_Radio_2.15.00.09.01_NV_1.77_003_release_157088_signed.exe runs but it always tells me that my battery is below 30% even though I plug the phone in to the charger and after a few minutes the LED turns green. Then I tried downloading the 3.70 rom as a zip file, named it pc36100.zip, put it in the root of my sd card, then I went into recovery mode and I told it to start the update. It looks like it works but I get a message at the end that says "partition update fail!" and then it asks me to reboot and I'm right back at the endless white evo splash screen. I even tried to load several times using the evo-recovery where I was able to pick which image I wanted to phone to update but it fails with a symlink error of some sort.
I'm stuck. Any help would be appreciated here.
Thanks

I would also try running the RUU and PC36IMG a couple more times, maybe download them from a different source. Do you have HTC sync installed on your computer? I believe it's needed to use the RUU. So if you pull your battery out, reinsert it, then plug your Evo into a wall charger, the light goes steady green after a few minutes? Strange, I'd try a different RUU. Did you download from here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060&highlight=hboot-0.97+ruu . I haven't experienced problems like this before (fortunately) but I've also read about people needing to format their SD card before it would work, using the PC36IMG. Not sure why, but possibly something corrupted on the SD card? Did the auto root give you any sort of errors or anything? Or did it just appear to work, and then this happened?
Also, you could try running the RUU from fastboot mode. Boot to the bootloader, select 'fastboot', and then try the RUU
HTC Sync is indeed needed for the RUU in .exe form.
Boot into hboot by holding down the volume down button while turning on your phone. I believe you choose hboot USB and then run the RUU exe.

The fastboot method worked! Awesome. So, in the hboot menu, it says S-OFF, which I assume means it's rooted. If that's the case, then I can push any rom I want on top of it now, correct?

Sweet, I'm glad it worked for you. So it says you're S off, even after running the RUU? I've never used the Autoroot method, but it must flash unrevoked forever, somewhere in the process. Well, if it says you're S off, I believe the only thing you're missing before you can flash anything is a custom recovery, which you most likely do not have, after running RUU. I believe that since you're s off, you can just flash a custom recovery from the bootloader, and then flash a rom. You could also use ROM manager to flash a recovery, you'd just need to download and install the Super User app, I believe. I think that should work for you? I've never tried to just flash a recovery from a stock ROM, right after an RUU, but if you're s off, i dont see why you can't do that. Download the PC36IMG I attatch here, make sure its named PC36IMG, put it on the main directory of your sd card, boot to the bootloader. Let it scan and ask you to update. Select volume up for yes. After that's done, you should have custom Amon Ra V2.3 recovery. From there, you 'should' be able to flash ROMs. good luck.
Edit: wouldn't let me upload the PC36IMG for some reason. Instead, click this link to download. http://db.tt/7jGH2CA

Uhh no. That PC36IMG.zip is waaay outdated. You know they are all different, right? Just because it's a PC36IMG.zip does NOT mean it's the same file as the next one.
I used that one in two situations...
1. when my friend phone was bricked
2. when did unroot
both times that file worked for me

Hi!
First off, I've been searching for the answer all afternoon, but with no luck.
Here's the thing. My GF borrowed my friends old Desire, because her Legend broke.
When we tried to boot it up, it was stuck at the white HTC screen. So i entered Hboot and tried to use recovery with no luck. Recovery was also stuck at white screen.
My friend had removed his SD card before we borrowed the phone. Could that be the problem? Both me and my friend are pretty new to rooting/flashing. All the info he could give me, was that he was running some Modaco rom, and had used Unrevoked to root the phone.
I tried to download a Modaco rom and rename it PB99IMG.ZIP and putting it at the root of our own SD card. No luck.
Then i tried to put the update.zip (CWM file) with the hope that I could then load recovery. Also no luck.
Also tried to plug in USB cable, so that I could maybe wipe phone and install a new RUU. USB was recognized in Hboot (HBOOT USB PLUG status), but no access gained on the computer. I have manually installed drivers.
My friend lives a bit far away. So is there a way I can solve this without his SD card?
Thanks in advance!

bortak> Awesome guide, will check it out right away!
Okay, so now i followed bortaks guide. Created a gold card, downloaded latest recommended RUU, and then ran it while connected with fastboot usb.
At first i had problems when the RUU rebooted the bootloader. The phone shut down and disconnected instead of rebooting. Tried a few times, and finally got the installation to move on by keeping the phone "alive" through pressing vol buttons -although with a black screen.
But by 29%, while updating radio, the installation froze. After some time i unplugged USB and let the installation fail. So now I'm stuck with the four triangles with exclamation marks. I can run the RUU again and again, but it keeps freezing at various stages of installation.
What to do? It's not bricked, so there must be hope?
Can I take a different approach? Through ADB perhaps?
Thanks again!
RUU installation keeps freezing on my pc! Tried to click vol button to perhaps keep the phone "alive", but then I got error 155
Can't seem to find anything on Google about RUU installs that freezes - do any of you know what to do? Can't I use ADB or anything to flash the ROM?

unfortunately yes, if you unplug the phone and turn it on, it should boot in RUU mode, at what point does it say FAIL! ?
if it is on the radio, then I'm afraid it's bricked.. if you managed to luck out somehow and it isn't, then you could try again.
When i turn it on, the black splash screen with exclamation marks comes on. If i try to turn it on with usb cable plugged in while running XP mode on virtual machine, i see the white screen with version informations. But it only says RUU with an orange background.
Tried to install the new Gingerbread RUU from the HTC hp, but it still freezes. Think I'm out of luck
hmm... stick your phone in the freezer (in a plastic bag) for 5-10 minutes then try again.
I know it may sound strange.. but it may be overheating or something.
Whoever you borrowed this from will not be happy haha

Which RUU are you trying to install?
I had the same issue when I realised I was trying to install a 2.1 RUU on my desire which was a bit silly, I had identical problems. used the correct 2.2 RUU and all ok
voodooboy3000 - Was trying to install official 2.3 Gingerbread RUU.
elliottg61 - It was crashing all the time when he had it, so he said i could have it if I could fix it. I couldn't
I would give the original firmware a go and get it back to stock. was it originally locked to a specific provider? if not use this RUU

Your not even s-off. How did he use anything to root. Granted my experience is with the bravoC. The GSM I'm sure is different. I would find the newest ruu available and try to flash that from hboot. If it takes forever go away. Don't touch it. Don't unplug it. Don't do anything till its done. If it wont flash after 30 minutes your screwed I think. U can try it over again. But if u have an official ruu it should flash no problem. If it gonna flash.
Try flashing a shooter port on the og evo, or flash a rom on the shooter. It can seem to hang on you for a while but it just takes time.
Edit: try this just rename it and stick on root of SD card and boot phone with volume down and power and then leave it be.

hahahahaha! gave you your first thanks because that made me laugh
I need help repairing my dinc. First, let me apologize for the long post, but I wanted to provide as much detail as possible.
My cousin dropped his phone in water and tried to dry it off. I don't know if he tried to turn it on after drying it off. Also, I don't know what attempts he has made to bring the phone back to life, but he has given up and handed the phone over to me. He figured since I am an IT guy and also do hardware repairs I would figure it out.
This is new to me because I've never owned a Smartphone before. He turned off his service on the dinc and used another Verizon phone he had lying around.
I've research different forums for a fix for the past few days, but nothing has worked. I’ve seen posts with similar symptoms, but in all cases they were able to get more functionality from their phone than mine. Also, my issue is related to water and not from a bad ROM upgrade. Here's a summary of things I've already tried:
Dried the phone out with the rice in Ziploc bag trick for 3 days (phone is completely dried)
Reformatted the micro sd card to fat32
Did a system update
Placed PB31IMG.zip into the root of the sd card
md5 checksum: 31bb1611a0fa8197d447c0438426717e
When I remove or rename the PB31IMG.zip file and hold the down button+power, here is the outcome for the following:
Fastboot: Gives me the following options Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader, & Power Dwn
Bootloader takes me back to the main HBoot screen.
Reboot would get me stuck on a continuous loop (stuck on the "HTC Incredible" white screen) and freeze
Reboot Bootloader just takes me back to the Fastboot menu
Power Dwn would do the same thing as the Reboot
Recovery: does the same thing as Reboot; it would freeze at the white "HTC Incredible" screen
Clear Storage: does the same thing as above
Factory Reset: does the same thing as above
Each time it gets stuck at the white HTC Incredible boot up screen, I would have to pull the battery. Hitting/holding the power button doesn't seem to do anything.
From what I've been reading, I don't think the phone is bricked, since it still turns on, has limited functions, & I can get to the HBoot screen. The only thing I haven’t tried is reinstalling the OS (not sure if the OS is included in the PB31IMG.zip file)? Also, I was going to try to reformat the hard drive (just in case the partition is damaged).
The phone has never been rooted and I am not trying to root/unroot the phone... just trying to repair the phone. The phone has the S-ON.
I have uploaded a 10 min. YouTube video so you can see what I'm dealing with. Any help would be much appreciated. If there is anything you want me to try or anything you want to know that I may have left out, please don't hesitate to ask. At this point, I'm willing to try anything.

Sorry, I can't post a link to my video so just replace the (dot) with a "."
You need to do an ruu with a PB31IMG.zip.
You can get the ruu here http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=22
If you ever want to be able to root you need to use the froyo one as gingerbread cant be rooted if your s-on. Just download, rename exactly PB31IMG.zip, place on your sdcard in no folders, make sure its not connected to a computer, then pull battery and replace then boot into hboot (vol down + power) it should automaticly find the file after a couple secs and then prompt you to press vol up to install. Once its done you will be promptet to reboot , do so and if all is as expected you should boot up normally. Note that the first boot will take a long time so be patient, it may seem like it freezes at the boot animation but give it time.

I ran the RUU program, which took about 10 min to complete. When it finished the update process, it rebooted the dinc, but I'm now stuck on the white htc incredible screen as demonstrated in my video. How long I'm I suppose to wait as this white screen? It seems as if it's frozen, but I'm not sure. Am I missing something?
Should I rerun it or try to run the PB31IMG.zip file? BTW, I grabbed the PB31IMG.zip file from the same site from your link.

No, I haven't. Can you please explain what this is and how it's done? I'm assuming this will pull up the syslog on the phone?

Yes, but let me explain. When I first turned on my phone it would freeze at the white htc incredible screen. The pc would not recognize the device. The HTC Sync program would also not recognize the device.
I pulled the battery and did pushed the down button+power to get the HBoot. Then I would plug in the usb cable and the device is still not recognized. I would have to select the fastboot option, then bootloader a few times before the ruu program can detect my phone. HTC Sync would still not detect my phone.
After the phone is recognized by ruu I ran the program. I can see a black screen on my phone with big white HTC letters. Then I would see a green scan bar running. The ruu program completed and the phone rebooted. I hit the "finished" button on the ruu program and exit.
The phone rebooted and got stuck on the white htc incredible screen. I waited for 15 mins and it's still stuck on the same screen. If you watch my video, you can see exactly what I'm talking about. I've tried re-running the PB31IMG.zip file, but it's not working.
Any other ideas? You think the partition is damaged or the phone is bricked?
Ok I watched the video. My only other sugestion would be to try and root it with unrevoked so you can get the custom recovery, wipe everything from in recovery, and then try flashing a custom rom such as jermains rooted gingerbread+ rom. If that dosent work i would say there is some type of hardware failure.

When I root it with Unrevoked, can I use the online method where I log on to their site or does matter?
Can I still root the phone even though HTC Sync does not recognize my phone? Yeah, someone from another forum suggested it might be a hardware issue from the water. If my cousin turned the phone on while it was still wet, he could have shorted out some circuits on the motherboard. I told him what he should do if it ever happened to him next time.
Thanks for helping me out!

I wasnt aware there was an online method. I'm not sure if unrevoked will work or not but i know you have to uninstall htc sync before you use the downloadable method. Its a pretty simple process and worth a shot. Hardware failure is verry possible though, especially if it was turned on wile still wet. Even if it wasnt turned on wet it probably got droped in the water wile on possibly causing a short right away.

That's my bad; it's like 2am now and I was thinking about something else. I had to download the unrevoked3 program and run it. You're right, I had to uninstall htc sync. I was unable to use the program because it wanted me to enable usb debugging mode, which I am not able to do with my phone in its current state. It could not detect my device.
Someone from another forum stated that after watching my video, he noticed that the image I flashed contained a VZ radio. He said he's heard of cases where users were waiting up to 2 hours in the htc incredible screen before the update is complete. This seems like a very long time, but I'm willing to try.
He wanted me to make sure my phone is fully charged. Then he wants me to run the update in the bootloader and just let it sit. He says it may take up to 2 hours. He said if it doesn't work then it's a hardware related issue caused by the board getting shorted out.
Thanks for all your help!

You need to have adb installed. If you don't, google how and there are many in depth tutorials. Then, once adb is installed, cd to your adb directory in terminal/command prompt and type ./adb logcat.
