[Q] How to install a kernel - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Looking to install my first kernel, do I flash it just like a rom via the recovery? I can't find a real "how to" guide on how to do it after looking around.
Also will a gingervillain 1.3 kernel work on 1.4?
Thanks for help...J

Yes, you flash the kernel (in .zip file) just as the ROM, and you don't wipe anything.
1.3 Kernel should/will work on 1.4 GV.
The most important is to not install AOSP kernels on Sense ROMs and vice versa - because of bugs & bootlops.

yap, exactly same way.
but don't forget to do a nandroid backup.

thanks guys this worked perfect.
is a nandroid backup just a backup on the green and black recovery? Thats what I do before flashing thing.
thanks

No update.zip is not kernel. You have to specifically download flashable kernel file from relevant forum and flash through recovery.

[Q] Is it possible to undo a kernel once installed?

I'm using the stock Gingerbread "Leak" rom version 4.12.651.1 that was leaked recently and I played around with it at first. Took several pictures and videos and enjoyed getting back to having Sense on my phone.
I used Kernel Manager Lite to download and install the Netarchy Toastmod-cfs-havs-more-sbc kernel and at now everytime I open up the camera it shows a white screen and I can't take a picture or video anymore.
Is there a why to uninstall or undo this kernel without having to reflash my Evo? I'd like to go back to just the stock kernel i guess. I even tried to use the Kernal Manager Lite to download and install a different Netarchy Toastmod kernel but it wouldn't install it over a previous kernel and when I clicked on the kernel I already have installed it won't give me an option to uninstall it...
Thanks for any help you guys can give me.
Find the stock kernel for that ROM and flash in recovery after wiping cache and dalvik cache.I will try to find stock kernel for that ROM.
Yeah there's no way to undo once u flash a kernel.....may I make a suggestions for ya foe the future.....Ive been doing this for a while......flash the ROM and make a backup once yur all setup...this way u can tinker with the rom and kernels and themes and what not.......and if those tweaks don't work for ya......u got a backup of a fully stock rom......

Thanks guys for the awesome advice!
Reverepats, it's funny you said that because that's the first thing that I thought about after this happened and I'm still kicking myself for not backing it up before flashing the kernel LOL It'll be a lesson learned I guess
Ianmb, that would be AWESOME if someone had this. I'll keep looking for this too but if I have to I guess my only recourse would be to wipe it all and reflash all over again... /sigh
There is a post for a working kernel for that ROM on the second page if the ROM is the stock 4.xxx. Stock kernel 15 I think, can't upload file from my phone?
ianmb, thanks for looking but I can't find any stock kernel #15 out there. not even google can help me =/
So it's possible to reflash a kernel over an already installed kernel? If i find the stock kernel how do I go about installing it? Via recovery?
Forgive me if I'm wrong...but if you just reflashed the rom without wiping, I believe it would install the stock kernel that came with the rom

Cm7 to synergy?

I'm running cm7, and I really want synergy god mode. I know that cm7 is an also based rom and synergy is a sense based rom,so how do I get it to flash. Do I need to flash a different radio. I tried different ways and still no success. I'm kind of a rookie to the rom situation and would greatly appreciate any assistance. If I do have to flash a radio, which one and how do I do so. What Im really looking for is the latest synergy plus god mode and also the carousel zip addon for the rom. Somebody anybody. Please help. Thanks.

no radio update necessary....a good wipe though is please tell me youre using RA recovery? godmode maybe your problem as well as it dont play well with alot of phones...
You MUST use Amon Ra recovery in order to have godmode work properly. Make sure you have the latest version (v2.3) of Amon Ra installed. Then reflash the ROM and try it out.
I know that cm7 is an also based rom and synergy is a sense based rom,

I believe you mean AOSP rom, there is no such thing as an "also rom".
so how do I get it to flash

Flashing the regular synergy rom is done just how you flash ANY rom, put the rom zip on your sd card, reboot to recovery, make a Nandroid backup, wipe everything, and flash.
If you are wanting to try God Mode however, that is completely different, you need to follow the directions on the SYnergy thread very carefully.
Do I need to flash a different radio.

That depends, what radio version are you on now? It's always a good idea to flash the latest radio if there is an update available.
I tried different ways and still no success.

Again, the Synergy thread has all the info you need. However, if you are this much of a noob, you might just want to try flashing the regular Synergy rom first. No offense, we were all noob's at one point, but God Mode is pretty complicated to get working correctly for someone who is still learning.
You flash synergy + godmode the same way you flash the regular synergy ROM. There is nothing complicated about it.

[Q] Kernels and restoring a nandroid backup

After flashing a kernel, they say to do a full wipe (and then reinstall the ROM?).
My question is whether after the wipe, can I restore a nandroid backup? Setting it up from scratch and just the way I like it is quite tedious if I were to do this each time, plus download the apps from the market etc. My arc is my main phone so I don't have the luxury of flashing ROMs and kernels all the time.
Do let me know if that's possible. If not, can you tell me how you guys do it?
My arc is running Stock ICS 4.0.4 with an unlocked bootloader.
I believe you got it all wrong.... you need to do a full wipe before installing a new ROM (to make sure it works properly and nothing is left from the old one).... not a kernel... You can flash kernels as often you want without any wipes. Just dont forget the WIFI-modules (only of needed by ther kernel).

Just think about it, it would be pointles to delete evrething and then restore it back..
P.S.: sh*t I pushed the wrong button and thanked you instead of quote....
yea..there is no point restoring the nand after flashing a kernel...full wipe and fresh installing rom is highly recommended..
Best way is to tryout a kernel..if everything is well and good then better stick to it.
afterall wat do u look in a kernel? OC,UV, good battery life and smooth UI..once you attain all these then stick to it..
btw i have tried many kernels this month without doing a full wipe..i never faced any problem as such..i just uninstall all OC, UV apps just to be safe
Thanks for the replies guys. And an extra thanks to Antochrist for his mistake. LOL!
Another reason for my question was because one of the kernel developers said to do a clean install.
Let's say I flash a kernel with additional wifi modules. Suppose I want to get back to stock kernel and its wifi modules, do I just flash the stock kernel or do I need to do anything extra to fix the wifi?

Happy new years everyone!
I am pretty new to using custom ROMS and kernels and have made a standard noob mistake
which was forgetting to back up all the original software (ROM, kernel, etc). I realized this quite later
and though I have found the original ROM for my GT-P5110 I seem to have trouble finding the stock Kernel
(the one it had when it left the factory; 4.0.4) I did a search and have found my search-fu to be weak.
Can anyone help me find the stock rom for the GT-P5110 (Galaxy note 2 10.1)?
And one more thing, should I get the Galaxy S3 LTE vs. LG Optimus G vs.your opinion?
(I am in South Korea btw) Is Korean version is any different or any harder to root or to
flash a custom ROM, anyone have any experience?
Many thanks

Thanks for the info that WIFI modules are included in the kernel and no extra additions need to be made.. I Don't know abt it ..
NOW assuming u now a lot abt Linux/Android could you please answer this for me..
- Does Restoring NANDROID
- Restore 'Stock Kernel' along with 'RIL file', RAMDISK - INIT### n stuff
Which Hyperion users need to fiddle with..
But kernel and ram disk are stored in the boot partition so does NANDROID back that up too ?
and Can you help me with RIL file related info..
Thanks
NANDroid only backs up ROM. It doesn't back up kernel. Kernel is always flashed externally, it's the same with all Android devices.

Reflashing stock kernel

hello.
so, if I recently flashed a custom kernel (franco) by installing from .zip through cwm, and I wanted to restore the stock jb kernel,
do i just restore the boot.img on cwm or do i have to restore system.img (or any other image) as well?
thanks!
Only boot.img

or reflash your JB rom

they are apart of the modifications that franco did (such as the sdcard binary)
but +1 to what acloh said... best thing to do is just reflash the base ROM. if gapps are needed then flash gapps right after you flash the ROM as well.

I see. Thanks! Stupid question...how do you reflash stock rom? I tried installing the original ota zip i used updating takju to jb but got a status 7 error. As of now I've just done a full restore of a cwm backup I did right before flashing Franco. Help?

You should always look inside the kernel zip and see what files it's going to modify. Then back up those files before flashing it.
If you've restored your nandroid (pre-franco), then you should be good to go for the OTA (assuming you didn't change anything else...)

so even if I'm already on the version I want (4.1.1) after the restoration, I should still reinstall the takju4.0.4 ->4.1.1 OTA.zip?
Also, are there any recommended caches I should clear after changing kernels?
Thank you.

?? Not sure I understand. If you restored 4.1.1, then you obviously do not need any update.
No, you don't have to wipe any caches.

[Q] Kernel related question

I have never flashed any kernels, just custom roms. From what I have read it goes down the same way, just flash the zip from SD in recovery and wipe cache. Correct?
Also, if I want to go back to stock kernel can I flash back to a JOP40C ( this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992483 ) even though my build is JOP40D ?

just flash it in your recovery(if its a flashable zip). dont wipe a single thing, dalvik and cache have nothing to do with kernels. worst case scenario, it doesnt boot. then just reflash your rom in your recovery to fix it.

franco is a good kernel. but most his kernels are in a img form, need fastboot for that. if its a zip, then flash it in your recovery, dont wipe a thing.

What about going back to stock? I just want to know if something goes wrong. Does flashing my rom get me the stock kernel back?

Even the .IMG files are easy enough to handle, OK so perhaps it might cost you a little money but within the Franco app (I don't know about others as not tried them) but you can simply just choose to restore a .IMG kernel file be it stock (which I have a copy of if you wanted it?) So you can swap and change as you wanted and the plus side of flashing this way is that you avoid the long reboot time dues to catch building again due to ram disk changes. I really think this is the best way of flashing kernels and certainly the easiest way if you wanted to carry on back to the OTA update route from Google.
For instance, I'm running stock takju rom 4.2.1 rom with Franco kernel and I have the stock boot loader and baseband and recovery and to install an OTA I just need to delete just one file and restore back to stock kernel that OTA update will install without troubles
