Question about gapps/updating to a later AOSP-based ROM

I've never used an AOSP ROM before, but now I am currently on AOKP. When I want to update to a newer version, do I still need to flash gapps after flashing the update? I assume I have to reflash the kernel as well if I use one different than the one included with the ROM?

You need to flash GApps straight away after if you are wiping your device. You also need to reflash the kernel of choice after. Good luck.

Only wiping I would do would be cache and dalvik since I am merely upgrading the ROM version, eg nightly 19 to nightly 20. Would that still involve flashing gapps?

You have to ref lash the kernel because flashing a rom flashes the from kernel. I've never had to flash gapps on any device if going from an old build of a rom to a new one unless specifically stated.

Just think about it. It depends on how you flash and if you flash an update.zip if that zip wipes existing data or just adds to it.
For a sure answer you would need to say what method is used and how the update edify script in the zip looks like.
Now for someone how knows the rom you're talking about in detail and what files are provided there might be a clearer answer, but not every poster does know such details^^

The answer is no, if you just update a rom without wipe, you dont need to flash gapps. This type of rom update keeps all your data in tact anyway so of course no need to flash extra.

[ROM][AOSP][4.0.4] Stock 4.0.4 AOSP IMM76D

This is a full flashable build of 4.0.4 AOSP I compiled myself.
There are absolutely no tweaks of any kind, this is full stock.

Installation
It can be installed with CWM.
Wipe
You should not need to wipe (except maybe cache). That said if you have weird issues, like accounts not syncing, try wiping.
I installed it over CM9 without wiping, but your mileage may vary.
If you come from pre 4.0.3 ROMs, please wipe.
Google Apps
gapps are not installed, so you will have to flash them too. You can use my mirror at https://faramir.eriador.org/r/gapps-ics-20120317-signed.zip
Please prefer the version of google apps you were already using, otherwise you will more than probably need a wipe.
Root
Note that this is stock, hence there is no superuser, you will have to install superuser and su by hand like on a stock rom.

Kernels
It should be compatible with all 4.0.3 custom kernels although I only tested FuguMod (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438417)
RECOVERY WARNING
This is full stock, which means if you keep the original kernel, it will reflash stock recovery at first boot.

Yes, it's fully stock, the google way
Real OTA image from google is not available yet, so this is what looks like it the most.
It's mainly for those who want to have real 4.0.4 now without waiting and without losing CWM or making a wipe.

how about losing CWM after making a full wipe

i only have 3e recovery with the belly-up android...

I just flashed this and lost CWM and have no Gapps.. my Signal bars stay grey and don't turn cyan (blue) even though I know.I'm in an area I get perfect service.

As I posted in the OP, you need to flash gapps. It's forbidden to distribute them (at least included in a ROM).

How did you flash the ROM?
I also flashed it together with Gapps, su and FuguMod R200.
I didn't loose recovery and also I can connect without any issues on Wifi and mobile data.

he probably wiped full like me and also forgot to download SU (from the other thread), gapps and optional kernel

I flashed in cwm and flashed the gapps but I guess it didn't take bcuz I don't see them I'm no where near a laptop so I'm guessing I'm screwed untill I root/flash recovery??

Soo.. is it best to just wait for another stock rom with a kernel that has a recovery... or just flash this?

This rom will not overwrite existing recovery partition.

You can flash FuguMod before booting, it will not wipe your recovery.
The problem is within the init.rc:

I will probably stay on that ROM and not flash any AOKP or so. It has all I need.

[Q] Kernel related question

I have never flashed any kernels, just custom roms. From what I have read it goes down the same way, just flash the zip from SD in recovery and wipe cache. Correct?
Also, if I want to go back to stock kernel can I flash back to a JOP40C ( this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992483 ) even though my build is JOP40D ?

just flash it in your recovery(if its a flashable zip). dont wipe a single thing, dalvik and cache have nothing to do with kernels. worst case scenario, it doesnt boot. then just reflash your rom in your recovery to fix it.

franco is a good kernel. but most his kernels are in a img form, need fastboot for that. if its a zip, then flash it in your recovery, dont wipe a thing.

Yes I am sure this is a flashable zip. I found the img files and the zip files on the franco thread.
What about going back to stock? I just want to know if something goes wrong. Does flashing my rom get me the stock kernel back?

Even the .IMG files are easy enough to handle, OK so perhaps it might cost you a little money but within the Franco app (I don't know about others as not tried them) but you can simply just choose to restore a .IMG kernel file be it stock (which I have a copy of if you wanted it?) So you can swap and change as you wanted and the plus side of flashing this way is that you avoid the long reboot time dues to catch building again due to ram disk changes. I really think this is the best way of flashing kernels and certainly the easiest way if you wanted to carry on back to the OTA update route from Google.
For instance, I'm running stock takju rom 4.2.1 rom with Franco kernel and I have the stock boot loader and baseband and recovery and to install an OTA I just need to delete just one file and restore back to stock kernel that OTA update will install without troubles

You need to use the search feature buddy.
If you can root your phone you can find a ROM.
And if you have no idea what a kernel or a ROM and which goes with what, I'd suggest staying away from flashing for now and look up tutorials and videos.

i used the TOOLKIT stuff to get my phone rooted..
is the kernel a essential thing for AOKP? i have already downloaded the ROM. any possibility to get AOKP by using "zip from card" directly?

Every rom comes with a kernel built in.
You need a custom recovery for your phone (Clockwork Mod or TWRP)
In recovery factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, format system, flash rom, flash gapps (Google apps needed) wipe cache and dalvik again and reboot.
If any of this seems overwhelming read read read. Watch a YouTube video on installing a recovery for your phone. Or a video on flashing a rom.
Phones are bricked by not understating what they are doing and downloading the wrong files.

my kernel version is 3.0.31-538866.andriod version is 4.1.1 phone already rooted with TWRP and all kinds of backups
the rom package([ROM] AOKP(Jellybean 4.2.2 )Task650) and gapps are already be downloaded to my pc
so what is my next step?
do i need to upgrade my kernel or flash some kind of kernel in before?

The rom comes packaged with a kernel. Follow the flash procedures on my link to install the rom and gapps. This will wipe the phone so be prepared. You said you already made a nandroid in recovery, right?

As long as you made a backup in twrp, you should be all set to go ahead and wipe and flash
Be sure to have the rom and gapps zips placed on your phone before starting.

When you wipe, you're essentially creating a clean slate for your new operating system to run on. Making a backup will allow you to restore your device in the event you run into any issues in the future. The backup will restore whatever rom you were running when you created the backup. For example, the backup you already made, when restored, will place touchwiz (stock) back on your phone. Once you flash a rom, if you were to make a backup again, it would backup your system with that particular rom. Then you would have 2 backups: 1 that has stock and 1 that has aokp or whatever it was you were running at the time of backup.
You can also copy and paste these backups onto your computer to have in case anything ever happens to your phone.
I would read up on all these processes and procedures a little more before you begin.

Since you're running a custom rom, you could update your recovery to the latest CWM or TWRP and flash a different or updated rom.

What custom recovery are you running? The first thing would be to get the latest img for your custom recovery and install it.
How did you root and install a custom recovery on your phone?

I am running AOKP OTA Ver. 3.2
That time I did it following a step by step guide with someone who was guiding me.

Oh…sure sure.
One I use is Team Win Recovery Project v2.4.1.0

You should update to the latest TWRP from here: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/104
You can flash it using Odin. Make a full backup using the new TWRP. Find a rom you want to try, save it to the phone, and flash it using the ypdated TWRP. Don't forget to wipe the phone before changing ROMs.

Ok So I delete the older TWRP get the new one.
Then back and wipe which of all the options?
And of course if I was using AOKP which I really liked, what will your recommend me?

Install the newest version of TWRP, create a backup of your rom using the new version of TWRP, find a rom you like, copy the ROM to your phone, boot into TWRP, wipe cache, dalvik, data, flash the ROM, reboot.

Also do I use my computer to download the rom or should I use my phone directly?
I decided to go with Hyperdrive RLS16
Currently downloading it.

You can download it directly to your computer and use Windows Explorer to copy it to a microSD card or directly to your phone. It's probably quicker to download a few to your computer and transfer them all at once so you can try different ones.
Have fun flashing ROMs.

Ok as I extract the rom to my external sd card of my phone it's asking me many permissions such as:
"Do you want to copy Cesium.ogg to your device?
Your device might not be able play or view this file."
I said yes to skip all of the next warnings because every time i hit yes comes another warning.
Also strangely the rom took forever to download and the extraction is also taking way to long.
I didn't had to go through so much stuff by that time I downloaded AOKP rom. :/
Still extracting as I update this post... Something is not right...

I will have to cancel this.
