setcpu widget help - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, just got the setcpu widget on my rooted and kernel flashed evo. I would like some help with all of the setting such as what I should set for charging, screen off, and so forth. I am running warm twopointtwo if that helps. Thanks in advance

DO. A. SEARCH. There's a bajillion threads about recommended SetCPU profiles.

That's why I posted this thread. I id a search and one guy had posted his text file so I put it on my sd card and it seems to make my performance worse.

USE.REAL.WORDS. Your point gets lost when using words that dont exist. Searching on this site sucks anyway. I can never find the same thing twice. Keep postin

Really though, just mess around till you find settings you like and works for you. People can "recommend" all they want. On the other hand, do you need an explination of the settings? SetCPU isnt necessarily about increasing performance, but managing that performance.

I know how feel about these settings.. for some reason no post a tutorial or anything..I searched so many websites and no gave a real answer.. i just found a couple..so these are my settings..
I you have a rooted phone..with a customer Kernerl, than you can overclock on the main screen and profile..meaning it can go past 998..
these are my settings that I saw from someone else.
Temp>50 499min/245min-on demand
screen off 245max/245min-on demand
charging 1113max/245min-performance <--I am overclocked
battery<25% 460max/245min-on demand
batter<50% 998max/245min-on demand
dont know how good or bad these seetings are..but they work for me..hope it helps

how do these settings affect your battery life?

Black screen aka black death

Seems like a lot of people are facing problem waking up the phone resulting in getting black screen and nothing else.
I faced the same problem too that is why I decided to create a new thread specifically on this.
Let's share what caused our phone to go into coma based on our observations so that in time, the root of the problem can be traced.
Based on my observation, when my phone is left idle for some time, say 1-2hrs, it tends to become sluggish and setcpu will stuck at max or min value (Yes! sluggish even when stuck at max value!). Given long enough idle time, it will fail to wake up (e.g. every morning when i wake up after 7-8hrs of idle time).
I was using OpenDesire v4.0.10 and just changed to v4.0.15 to see if it still exist. I have setcpu set on 1075max 245min (ondemand) and 245max 245min (ondemand) when screen off. Also, using task manager.
Please share your observations and phone settings (ROM, versions, setcpu, task manager and others)

Nope, but in OpenDesire thread, people without setcpu experienced the same thing. Do you have such problem?
I noticed using setcpu does make the phone sluggish. when uninstalled problem was solved.
Installed undervolt & got better batt life.

Perhaps, a more tailored topic title will help all readers understand what you're talking about.
However, HAVS kernels is the only common factor and SetCPU is not the cause.
And, my two cents, I don't think this issue deserves a dedicated thread since is specific to a single kernel flavor.

I created a specific thread on this topic because there are many people out there experiencing this bug and there is no dedicate thread to discuss it. I assume you are not facing this problem because otherwise you would understand the pain and frustration of encountering this problem repeatedly

Undervolt is a kernel mod that you install and it lowers the cpu drain by setting it to use lower volt values on each cpu freq. This cause it to stay cooler too.
Look for it in this forum. [Kernel] undervolt

I am suffering from this once per day on Defrost and OD so I suspect its kernal related. I am running the default HAVS kernel at the stock 998 frequency. I uninstalled SetCPU yesterday and had a lock this morning ( Defrost 4.1 ). The notification LED was flashing orange. So SetCPU is not causeing the problem. I have swapped over to SVS so I will report back on how that goes.

I use OpenDesire 4.0.10, then 4.0.15, then 4.0.16, each release for at least 3 days, and not for once have I encountered such "black death"....no setCPU of course.
Care to elaborate what apps you have there ?

That issue is relative to OpenDesire and DeFroST ROMs only, and when they use a particular kernel version (HAVS) on selected CPUs, so I continue to think that it'll be eventually sorted out by the respective developers and/or Kali- and the kernel team; those guys do monitor the ROMs threads so they're already aware of the issue.
And yes, I suffered the issue twice, as I wrote more times in the DeFroST thread. "Pain" (panic?) and "frustration" sound a bit strange to me, when dealing with overclocked, custom, highly tweaked cooked ROMs. If a reboot scares you, head for a stock HTC ROM and you'll be fine.
I was worried I was the only one who had this. Thread title isn't that helpful for people seeking advice on it though. Get this after every reboot for about a minute until everything is back to normal.
Had the sluggish issue when using YouTube after about 20/30 mins, other than that I've had no lags.
Using 4.0.16

Double post
I got this on a svs kernal, so its not just restricted to havs. I had 1300 svs installed. With setcpu. Done the same with 1267 svs.
I've also had this issue on SVS kernels, was also having a series of hard resets last night - have rolled back to an earlier version of my favourite ROM flavour for now.
Never experienced anything like that...Although there are times that my Desire's performance would remind me of the bad old Diamond days, where patience was a virtue(well, not a virtue, but a money saving method!throwing your phone to the wall with your full strength after it frustrates you with being slow is known to be a costly process! ).Seems to be some apps running in the background...Maybe if your phone recovers after it without a reboot you can check if any apps use a larger than normal amount of ram.Other than that...Well,god is almighty and people experiencing epiphanies are known to work wonders through the ages!
And something completely off-topic(sorry about that). When using an undervolted rom/kernel you are not able to overclock to values as high as when using a normal-volted(is the word right?I dunno...) rom/kernel,right?I mean, what would happen if someone tried to overclock to 1382MHz(I know,I like the limits) using an undervolted kernel? And finally, how does this all apply to the hardware?Does UV affect the CPU's health like overclocking or something like that?
Thanks a lot!
I've had it on OpenDesire 4.0.10 and 4.0.15 a few times. Stopped happening when I stopped using profiles and defaulted back to to 998/ondemand.
Will try running it on 998/interactive for a while and see what happens.
No lockups after SetCPU to ondemand. OD 4.0.15.

Separate thread IS useful, otherwise replies get lost in ROM threads where the focus is not specifically on this problem.
I too had this issue three times. DeFroST on all occasions, versions 3.x iirc. Never tried the HAVS kernels, just plain default what is shipped with the ROM (SVS @ 12xx Mhz?). Also SetCPU'd it, have not yet bothered to try and turn that off yet. SetCPU keeps it at 995 Mhz max, interactive governor, while switching to powersave while asleep.
Issue happened twice while browsing (possibly with Flash ads on the page by accident) and the power state switching (i.e. turn the device off quickly while running for train, afterwards reading for 2 minutes again, etc). Third time it happened while tethering my internet connection to my laptop.
Hth
I had this problem few times a day when I upgraded OD to .10 and the new ADW on the same day.
Then I restore back the old OD with old ADW, then no problem.

SetCPU

currently i have setCPU running on my rooted Dinc with several profiles set.........my question is what is the optimum settings for:
Sampling Rate
Up threshold
ignore Nice load
Powersave bias
mine currently are 40000,70,0,0
i'm trying to find a good setting for best battery life b/c i'm constitenly on my phone all day!!!
thanks for any input.....
What kernal r u running? Several recommend no profiles, and oc will run the battery down.

yea i did, i read somewhere on here that the "perflock" has to be disabled when using a stock kernal and running froyo, any truth to that ??? and a friend of mine has an incredible and he told me that these mods really don't make that much of a difference, now he's a verizon sales rep so he may be telling me that so i don't change my phone too much

generally speaking there are two types of people who are employees for phone companies:
A) someone who just wants a paycheck
B) geeks like us who like to hack and mod and tinker
A will tell you that hacking will void warranty, blah blah blah....mostly because they don't know much about what stuff is. B will tell you what they know, and admit when they don't know something.
it sounds like your friend is falling into the A category, especially if they're saying "mods don't change much". they change quite a bit, so be careful.
as far as your question in the OP, with my eris i would just mess with stuff, and see how the phone runs. don't save to run at boot until you know it's stable and will not crash or freeze your phone. adjust settings, and see how it responds, repeat as necessary.

where can i get that kernel ??
Yes you have to disable perflock.
I only adjusted my power bias to 650 I think which is 65%. 1000 being 100% and 10 being 1%. All this does is make sure you cpu stays on the lower end of the usage. I have a 2150 and stream pandora a lot and always have 3g running, I go online and everything and I get 2 days of usage with a down clock and some profiles.

[Q] Over/Under clocking

I was wondering on how exactly I do this? I looked through and seen people talking about it, but not how to do it. Can someone explain to me what it does, and how to do it?

There are actually several ways to do this. The most popular of which are to have a rooted rom, install a separate application and use that application to modify your cpu speed. The more popular applications to do this are:
SetCPU
ROM Toolbox
ROM Toolbox light
I've used all of these and if I could suggest one to you, I would say ROM Toolbox, because it gives you a lot of other tools that SetCPU does not. HOWEVER, I find that in regards to overclocking/underclocking and setting profiles, SetCPU is much more handy and offers more customization.

Is there any certain configuration that you find best? Thanks for all the links and suggestions also!
System tuner pro is also nice. There is no " right" settings. Your phone might not like my settings profile. They are all different. I do however under clock. I see no lag on cm9 beta1. I use a Max CPU of 1ghz. I also under volt everything by -25 because -50 on Evert step crashes my phone. Yours may like it. Just remember do not push the set on boot button until you are sure your phone can handle the new setting.

It is pretty much a try what works. I find that over clocking is nice for certain things, but I like to have a long battery life as well, so I have mine set up so that the CPU is usually running ondemand 800-200 and for certain programs, ondemand 1200-500 and when the screen is turned off it is ondemand 500-200. I haven't had any problems and my battery life is generally very nice. Everyone's phone is different though.

[Q] Can I Limit CPU But Exclude Certain Apps?

Hey guys, just a lil' prelude:
Sorry if there is a similar thread, I did a quick search here and a couple places and didn't see anything. Also, sorry if it's a simple answer, it's eluding me at the moment.
My main question, as the title says, is this: I am looking for a way to limit my CPU as with profiles in setCPU or Rom Tool Box Pro. But I am looking in particular, if there is a way to do so, yet at the same time exclude certain apps; Such as benchmarks or games. In essence I want my processor to be limited so that it's saving battery until the point at which I launch an app where I might benefit from the improved/full CPU power. Is this at all possible?
I recently switched from Sense 6 to GPE and realized there is no power saving mode options in stock android, so my battery has been draining a bit faster than I am used to. I was running power saving mode continuously and just turning it off when needed, so I am probably going to end up just limiting it until I need to take off the limit, but if there was a way to get a hassle-free set up I would be super glad. I always enjoy a little tweaking, so if it takes a bit of work that's fine.
Anyways, lemme know, and thanks in advance!

Have you tried maybe setting up a CPU Control with Tasker? Yes I know...Tasker right
[TUT] Tasker CPU Control V5|Frequency/Governor Customisable Profiles|SetCPU with OCD
Tasker

Last 2 just to learn some more about it if you want.
I'm not aware of any other programs, will have to look into it more but even so, I'd be interested in knowing about it as well. Even though my phone runs great on battery life etc.
Well it's not exactly running bad I battery so much as I know it could be running better with a little help. Lol.
But, I shall definitely look into this when I get home from work. It looks like, from the few glanc s I gave it that this might be able to pull off what I was looking for. I didn't even think of Tasker (mostly because I don't know how to use it lol). I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks guys! Your Per-App-Modes led me to another suggestion here on XDA. So I think I am gonna try that first, but I never knew half of these options existed! Thanks for the help, I am gonna test each for a few days and see what I come up with. I am hoping the Xposed Framework works out because, seeing as I have a few other modules to get most of my tweaks done, having just another module would be nice and organized to have all my favorite tweaks and mods in one little area. Lol.

Kernel Auditor power suspend state?

Hi all. I finally gave up on finding a over/unclocking app. As bliss comes with KA by default. I'd like to set it up to undervolt when the screen is off. Is that what this option does? I've done tons of searching, and can't find any info. Some of the other apps like set cpu etc. etc. Are out of date by a few years. And would probably be overridden by kernel auditor anyway. Also I heard about one governor that would charge the phone slower, and cause it to hold a charge longer. Any help is much appreciated as I'm kinda lost. Many thanks.

I actually bought setcpu. For setting the governor's and mhz it works like a charm anything else though is pretty outdated. I'm currently looking for a new kernel manager app. I think KA is worth looking into as it virtually accomplishes the same things. As far as having two different managers installed that's a no go as they conflict with one another.
