Be ready for some tiny tiny micro soldering if you are going to use it on a Captivate. There are no PCB points on the captivate for easy JTAG hookups like on other mobos.
I have a jtag machine btw...I offer the service on my site...
Just not for captivate yet as I want to practice more on them.

Mine is a 3rd generation and the touch screen or digitizer and the lcd are two separate parts. I recently replaced the touch screen (digitizer) after dropping it. 26.00 Ebay..

Search on Youtube and you can find video tutorials of how to take apart the phone. I tried to do it and it didn't go well for me, but my LCD was also cracked and so was the case, so I literally had to take everything off of my old phone and transfer it to another case assembly. In the process of removing the flex cable antennas, I broke two of them and had to order a replacement. I'm just found the parts I need to fix it yesterday.
If all you have to do is the digitizer, then me personally, I don't think it is too hard. I recommend getting and LCD/digitizer combo to make things easier; even if your LCD is still intact. I only bought the digitizer, and it turned out my LCD was also cracked and had to order it separately.
If you've never done anything like this before, then I also suggest you find a repair shop and let them do it. Buy the parts yourself and pay them for the labor.
ok I bought the digitizer and I guess ill go to a repair shoo and let them do it

I've never had to replace my screen, so I can't offer any specific advice for you. All I know, is that if I were to perform a repair such as that, I would have researched it a lot, bought a pry tool and some other tools for the job, and figured out what type of adhesive to use. Did you try google? Im sure there's a specific type of adhesive that you need to use.

Before you do that, it's probably a good idea to take it apart and find out which size connector cable your screen has. The Evo two types, a "small" and a "big" one.
I'm posting these amazon links for reference about the flex cable size, I am 100% sure you can get these for cheaper elsewhere...
A "big" one: http://www.amazon.com/ORIGINAL-Display-Screen-Sprint-HTC/dp/B004RDGTJ2/ref=pd_sim_e_7
A "small" one: http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Evo-Replacement-LCD-Screen/dp/B00427SHXO
Again, there are surely places where you can get these for cheaper, but the amazon links do have photos of the items so you can see the difference between the two flex connector sizes.

And get a replacement... why do you have insurance with BB if you're not going to use it? My understanding is that they don't charge a deductible anyway.
I may be misreading things, but from the OP's description, it made it sound like his phone has a protection plan with Best Buy, whereas his lady doesn't have that or regular insurance.

Start on step 20.
Do your research, ask many Others I have helped on this forum with repairs. Yur best bet is to spend the extra money and buy it preassembled. I had for sale screens with the digitizers already attached directly from htc. Wth the plastic stil on the front. Many members purchased from me but at the moment I'm sold out. Save yourself ANY little or big headaches, spend the extra few dollars and buy it all in one piece. Maybe a few of my friends or customers might chime in...good luck
Thanks guys the help us much appreciated.

Hey guys.
I was stupid and put a thin wire into the external antenna slot. Despite reading about the fact it could ruin the internal antenna i was just so desperate for better 3G service.
Well i scrapped the internal antenna, anybody have any ideas as to what i should do? I tried looking for a new MoBo online but couldnt find anything for our phone. Im really mad at myself i like freaking hate myself. i should just leave it alone. FML.

Well, we all do something not-so-smart from time to time. Don't forget to eBay/craigslist the parts. I'm sure someone who knows howto fix their phone could use a new backing, the battery, the screen, etc...

True I could sell individual parts. It's working now if I keep the back cover off with the wire shoved into the antenna slot. The part that pisses me off is I even read a thread where someone else did exactly this to their I9100. I need to listen and be happy with what I have. Or just buy the antenna plug designed for this device. I'm going to try a few things to see if I can fix it. However one guy went down to 220 on his s2. I kinda wanna snatch it. But I really shouldn't go over 100 to fix it. Ugh I really hate myself. You think I'd learn by now -.-

It only has six points of contact and would be fairly easy for someone skilled with a soldering iron. If it isn't your forte, you could probably find a local electronics shop that would do it for you for a reasonable fee.
Hey man..I read your post and I have my old nexus..it is missing the battery door and the back is scratched but screen is 10 out of 10.. I would post it to sell but I do not believe I am able to sell on here I would let it go for like 50 bucks or 40 even..

It is relatively hard if you don't know what you are doing. Need an disassembly guide. A hot air gun and a soldering station.
Oh and some flux.

yeahh I sent it in for repair and they said they could not repair it....then on top of that my note2 got stolen Friday. I'm using a old windows phone 7....its killing me
I had mine apart last night to do the USB port repair (replace the whole ribbon) and looked at the sim slot while it was apart. I am no expert, but I have replaced surface mount chips before that are much more difficult then what this repair would be. A fine tip temp control iron, some desolder braid (along with solder and flux), and it is pretty straight forward. Wouldn't need to take it apart any further then just removing the back.
If you end up wanting to get rid of it for savagehax offer, I would be interested in yours, that being it would be missing a battery back and have a defective sim slot.
Speaking of which, are you sure the sim slot is the defective piece? It'd be worth it to put a meter on there and measure continuity between the pins and solder points.
Good luck with whatever you end up doing.
I had a sim adapter in it and when I pulled it out I guess it rip some pins.....cell phone repair pros told me they could repair it they put in a new sim reader and all...

Hi everyone. Just wanted to chime in on a positive experience I just had with getting my s2 repaired. I found this repair guy through eBay and due to his awesome customer service and repair skills, I figured I would post his info here for anyone else who might need their phone fixed.
I tore my phone down and cut away the metal shield carefully to see if there was a bent pin causing my troubles first. The pics im attaching are of my actual phone. Im fairly handy with a soldering iron, but this guy did an exceptional job with the repair by hand under a microscope! He informed me that 2 pins had lifted from the PCB.
Here is his ebay page for the repair : http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=300927591950
Here is his email :
[email protected]
He does take paypal so you can skip eBay altogether which will save the guy a couple bucks in the end to help him out a bit.
If you do use him, let him know you are from XDA. He is working on supporting more models so having a well recognized inexpensive repair guy here could go a long way in the future for us
