[Solved]Been awhile since I've been here...Anyways,
Up until maybe a few weeks ago, my data connection has been working 100% fine no matter what ROM I've switched to. Then I somehow hit a roadblock. I hadn't really noticed, but when I wasn't on Wi-Fi, I couldn't connect with any apps to the internet, nor use the browser. My phone shows connection and bars, but it won't actually work. It just tells me there's no data connection available, or whatever depending on the ROM. I thought it might have been a data tower problem, but I had this problem in the Twin Cities, my local township, and throughout Chicago (vacation). All of those locations were supposed to be HSPA+ compatible, and worked prior to now.
To try and fix this, I've flashed my phone to all of my old backups, including my old stock, and data wouldn't work on any of them. I've reverted to MIUI, CM7, and Tmo 2.2.
This makes me think its either the radio (never messed with it before), the SIM card, or some hardware defect of some kind. I've been reading around, and apparently I might also have an APN problem. I've tried looking up how to fix these individually, but I don't want to screw up something that isn't broken. Thoughts, anyone? Currently I'm using MIUI latest, and I used rmk's RIL autopatcher for radio libraries. [Solved]
EDIT: Solved! For others experiencing data connection issues, check with a T-mobile person and ask about your plan.. Apparently they love to switch around plans, and forgot to enable data on my handset. Others have found they were given a different data plan, and needed a different APN. Also, if your plan is fine, Evilcuber was right that different APNs can solve data issues.

I think its an apn problem. Try searching (your carrier) apn settings on google and it will tell you what you need to set for username and password and other stuff

I tried multiple variations of T-mobile APN's, and none of them worked... Just found out my plan got switched, so it might be that also, (I still have unlimited data, messages, 500min voice). EDIT: I was sure the APN edit would work..Darn. Am I missing something here..?

just out of curiosity, is it typical for things to screw up like this when you switch your plan around? i'm thinking of increasing the minutes on my plan and i don't really want to encounter any roadblocks like this with my phone running g-lite.
sorry i couldn't offer any insight into your problem though.
Problem is solved anyways, bro. You should be fine changing plan. Just double-check.

Hello there. If you're gonna change your plan, minutes, data, messages, whatever, see if you can do it at a store. That way you can see what they've changed. I also found out that if they switch up your data and DO enable it, you'll get a message saying they changed it.
I think you'll be fine adding more minutes, just make sure they add the unlimited data, as its optional when switching plans now.
This has been happening to me for the last couple of days. Out of the blue my phone will pop this error: Data call failure. Error code 128. Unable to establish wireless data connection. I have done some research on this error message and most of the things I found had to do with using the phone as a hot spot. I am not using that feature. I am using a custom rom that I have had on for a couple of months now. Nothing has changed on my phone. I have tried updating the prl and then updating the profile. I have pulled the battery and left it off for half an hour. None of the other phones on my account have this issue. It is particular to my phone only. Is it this something I can call sprint about and they can reset or do I need to flash my radio again or take it in to sprint?
Had the same thing happen to me today. Called sprint and they said there was a data issue going on in my area. I say its rubbish but whatever.

That's been happening to me all day today. I thought it was maybe the kernel I installed today (more freedom) but after seeing this maybe it was the earthquake on the east coast causing problems with the network?
I have been getting these errors all day today as well.
i've been getting it all day... I thought it was kernel
I keep getting that error to. Thought i messed up my phone. Guess it was the earth quake, That **** was crazy though, never felt one before. Anyway after it happened i lost service on my phone for like 2 hours, kept getting beeping noises when i would try to make a call.
Sorry to hear others having this problem as well but I am glad that it probably isn't my phone. I would hate to get my evo replaced with a newer one that can't be rooted.
I know running CM7 right now and getting no 3g speeds right. Lame. But I got wifi though.

It can be rooted! These Dev's don't let us down, come-on man.
This started happening to me after the earthquake. In NYC
you mean Virgina? But yes, the last few days especially today after the quake. Ivebeen getting it alot.
I just had to reinstall synergy because it started freakingout saying that my andriod process had stop working, and a media process stopped working. was driving me insane.
Yeah know issue with Sprint call tech and do ctms ticket and maybe prl update or maybe * 18. The issue may be cleared by now .
Just the last couple days? I been getting these errors on and off for months now... before I rooted, and bricked my phone, so I'd say it has something to do with sprint not having enough bandwidth... or something like that anyway....
data call failure error 128
My Evo 4G started getting this Data Call Failure Error 128 last week (Wed), also only when I unlock... It is only a message, but everything works fine afterwards. It would happen about 5 times a day.
Then I went to Mexico for the weekend (3 days) and was roaming over there. Not once did the message pop up. Everything was fine, roaming data, text messages, phone calls. Thought everything was fixed. Came back on Monday and once I was on the Sprint network, started receiving the messages again on unlock.
I updated PRL and Profile and everything. That didn't stop it. Tried changing from Sprint to automatic roaming and that didn't really do anything. I thought it was a couple of apps i had (like Green Power that turns off data and turns it back on) but uninstalled it and the messages kept popping up. Tried enabling always-on data and that seems to work but that drains the battery faster than usual. Been searching all android forums looking for others in this situation and it seems like only a Sprint/HTC issue (Evo 4G, 3D and Shift). This is getting very annoying. It happens about 5 times a day.
My wife thinks that it's Sprint fixing and adjusting their network getting ready for the iPhone rush.
Wow, glad to know that I'm not the only one. I think that I had somehow did something wrong with my phone. I keep on getting these Data Call Failure - Error Code 128 messages several times a day. I tried reflashing a new rom, then doing it again. Must not be the rom, but Sprint. Annoying!!!!
it was just a sprint issues
Also cannot call the *2 or the *4 automated lines to sprint, get a busy signal and pop up saying "network is busy try again later", but can get through to sprint on a landline just fine. Apparently I cannot connect to what the sprint tech says is the "automated lines". I continue to get the error code 128 repeatedly, whether on wifi, 3g or 4g, and Sprints only "remedy" is to do a factory re-set which I have read has not affect.
I have a G2 rooted running CM7 RC1, but since I rooted back in January I have switched from an 8gb to a 16gb to a 32gb microSD card, and lately it has been acting up (drops calls, loses wifi, etc) so I wanted to start over with a clean slate with the latest CM ROM, kinda like reformatting a PC and starting fresh with a new OS. what would be the best way to do this? thanks in advance
Download the latest nightly of CM7: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=vision and put on the root of your SDcard.
1) Enter recovery
2) Wipe data/factory reset (or use a superwipe+ .zip if you want a more "thorough" wipe).
3) Install zip from SDcard > Choose zip > CM7nightly.zip
4) Reboot System
5) Enter your gmail account, etc. get to the homescreen.
6) Fix permissions in ROM manager, reboot again.
And there's your clean slate. If you want to afterwards, you could always format your SDcard too.

I would highly recommend the SuperwipeG2+ if you want a clean slate, so to speak. I had success using it to fix a GPS issue. Of course, everything Martonikaj said was exactly right - but I would definitely suggest the Superwipe tool. You simply flash from recovery rather than using the CWM factory reset option. You can find the file here:

thanks for your replies. ive followed your steps to a T, flashed superwipe, latest cm7, google apps, reboot, fix permissions, sync my google account... but now i have more issues. i cant get tmobile wifi calling to connect, which is a major issue for me because i dont have cell reception in my house. the wifi calling app was a major reason i got the g2 in the first place. i figured it wasnt a clean install so i reflashed cm7 but get the same problem. also, my battery lasted 7 hours before dying with little use. before it died i checked and saw that cell standby had taken almost 80% of my battery use while it was just sitting untouched.
i searched these forums and there isnt much in terms of help for fixing the wifi calling app, so can anyone please help me out? i really like CM for its speed but these are issues that will force me to try a sense ROM. thanks in advance
Perhaps your build.prop needs to be configured to model: T-Mobile G2 instead of HTC Vision. I don't recall the way it's set in plain CM7. I know I had to alter it to get the T-Mobile My Account working properly.... unfortunately I don't use the Wifi Calling app so I can't be of much help in this department. I actually removed it all together.

So, two things. First this battery drain... I would give it some time. Battery drain is always worse right after a flash. You might consider using the calibration app by marosige. It's free on the Market. Or you could wipe battery stats from recovery, but the application is super handy. Battery should improve with time. Mine has been excellent with all CM ROMS - after a calibration and a little time.
And while I could be totally wrong about the build.prop and the Wifi Calling app, you should check it. Using your file manager (Root Explorer or ES File Explorer, to name a few), navigate to /system folder and then find the build.prop, open it as a text document and check the lines:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=vision
If this is what you see (above), try changing it to this:
ro.product.model=T-Mobile G2
ro.product.brand=tmobile
I've had to do this a few times in order to get T-mobile apps like My Device to work. I'd hate to see you abandon CM because of the Wifi Calling app...
T-mobile WiFi calling works fine for me on both CM7 and MIUI with a build.prop indicating HTC Vision and not T-mobile G2.
What exact error are you getting when trying to run it? Or whats happening?
As far as battery life, it will improve over time as the previous poster stated, but 7hours 100% to 0% seems a bit off unless there's a ton of heavy use.
I think I have an entirely different problem altogether. The reason my battery life was so bad was because it was searching for a network the entire time, and I can't connect to Wifi calling because T-Mobile doesn't recognize my phone. When selecting T-Mobile under network operators I get "Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network" and when I try Wifi calling I get "You are currently not registered with the T-Mobile network. Would you like to register to enable Wifi calling?" and after selecting register I get "W005.4 T-Mobile Network Error"
I'm in over my head. I've tried rewipe data/cache, superwipe, reflash and battery/sim pull, so I guess my next course of action is to head to T-mobile and maybe ask for a new sim card?

Looking back at your first post, this seems to be an extension of the same issue which inspired you to wipe and flash another ROM. I don't know if it's a radio thing, or a SIM card thing... which radio are you using, btw? Have you flashed any radios? If not, yes, I would definitely go and get a new SIM card. It could have just been going bad and now it's dead. You're not in over your head... yet. Try the new SIM card and see what happens.
yup it was the sim card... got a new one from the T-mo store and activated it and my phone is back online! had the same one since 2001 so it wasnt surprising. have never flashed a new radio so i knew that couldnt be it. thanks for your help, i think i got it from here

Glad you got it figured out. I definitely wouldn't trust a SIM to hold its integrity and work properly 10 years after you got it lol.
I'm having issues with mobile data right now. Some websites load fine, but when I try to access Google or YouTube, I keep getting 504 gateway timeouts. I tried factory reseting and reflashing my ROM (jedimaster11) with no dice. I tried resetting the radio settings in service mode (found out how when I screwed it up when I first got the phone) and that didnt work. Anyone have any suggestions?

I think T-Mobile is having network issues. You went through some pretty extreme steps before thinking about things on their end.
in Los Angeles, and I'm having the same issue right now. I went to bed about 3 hours ago and everything was fine, but had no Google services this morning. Call T-Mobile, complain and get a service credit.
I know how much it sucks, I'm 100% invested in the Google ecosystem myself, but your phone is likely 99.9% not the problem.

I ended up calling them before reading this. I figured it was something on thier end, but I was messing with stuff that could have messed things up on my end so I exhausted all my options first just in case. I didnt make a complaint for free credit, but ended up having them put in a work order for the area.
I just verified this by setting up a VPN on my phone. Google services work wonderfully through VPN but not at all directly through T-Mobile's network. Looks like T-Mobile is almost certainly the culprit.
I can't guarantee your issue is my issue, but given the similarities, the timing, and our geographic proximity, I'd be willing to wager real money we're suffering the same problem.

I'm in UK with a unlocked HTC10 from carphone warehouse, on the ThreeUK network.
Recently I've noticed that I no longer connect to 4g other than a few very rare occasions.
The only changes,
1. full update to the latest OS
2. I removed the sim card and put it into an old phone, when I re-inserted it into the HTC I got "network updates" which I accepted.
Things I have done after verifying mobile network/data is set to AUTO
1. delete all APN
2. reset APN to details available on my carrier website
3. Settings >backup+reset>network settings reset.
The odd thing is very occasionally it does decide it likes LTE and it works fine.. but its rare.. even if I do a reboot or toggle airplane mode.... the second I remove the sim card and put it into my old phone I have LTE, so it really isn't a signal issue.
My network have suggested a factory reset, but I am not rooted and have game data among other things that are impossible to backup. so at this stage I would rather not .
totally flummoxed by this one!!! any help or suggestions appreciated...

possible solutions:
- get new sim card
- hard reset done inside stock recovery
Sent from my hTc 10
Thanks.
I got a bit of time today, so did a factory reset.. same error still.. and again I put the sim in my old phone and bang 4g straight away..
in the HTC if I leave it in a strong signal position for several minutes I can see 4g occasionally pop up, but if I walk away from the window it goes again, even though I get 4g through the whole house on my old phone, and did on the htc when I first got it.
Actually thinking theres a hardware fault now.. bit of a strange one.. but looks like i'll have to return the phone tomorrow. we can try a different sim first in the shop
Just an update.
I spoke several times to HTC, one ran through basic resets with me no change (hardly surprising as I've already done a hard reset). this agent "sent through" details for return item for fix.. but these took days to arrive so in the meanwhile thinking they were lost I phoned again.
This agent was going to send me a email with lots of settings changes to try... this email never arrived....
Now since then I've done a lot of research online, and found that there are quite a few sites saying the htc10 on the new software has LTE issues, poor signal dropping signal etc.. IE it is my error, so why did htc support not know this? I wonder if its generic media articles or actually a "known" fault... its so hard to search here as both 4G and LTE are too short search terms..
Now Do I bother to send it back to them and be without my phone for a couple weeks?? if its software then surely they cannot do anything... I wonder how long until the next OTA update that may fix this if I just wait it out??
Really don't know what to do, I rely on my phone a lot, 4G isn't really "needed", but I do find the 3g signal is quite poor around a lot of areas I used to get good 4G.

I have good 4g on my old phone (now sold), and this htc10 was better when I first got it, now its aweful,
Can you link me the exact software youre using? I'm very new to the HTC, I assumed the europ unlocked software would be the same as USA? but I don't get Volte or Wifi calling on 3uk..
I use mirrorlink quite a lot, and like the HTC software, so i'm keen to keep on a stock rom so I can use android pay as well etc.. or is your rom custom/rooted etc? Sorry to pester, you're the first threeuk customer on this phone I've come across. any extra details/information would be awesome thanks.

So a bit of an update.. I chickened out of a software change... So got the sim changed, no difference, gotthe phone sent for repair, they updated to 401.4 but no change.. rang again, and we tried setting to 4G only using the service menu, and bop 4G signal just fine.. so it genuinely is a software bug in 7.0, the stupid thing is I had one bar at 3G, I swapped to 4g only and had 5bars!!!!! so it wasn't even like it was favouring the strongest signal.. just a shame I cannot receive phonecalls on 4g, so I need to leave it set to auto and just accept until they sort it that I rarely get 4g.. but at least I now know if I need 4g at any point I can go to the service menu and swap to 4g temporarily. he sounded like there have now been like a few reports of this, so hopefully HTC take it on board and push a software update promptly. he suggested 3-4weeks as a potential timescale, I suspect he meant months.. but fingers crossed

When you were having this problem was Chrome allowing you to access some sites, but on others saying that the DNS server could not be reached? If its same problem that you are having I can't use your work around as it's difficult to get a 4G signal where I live.

Sounds like you're having a different issue, assuming you have a data connection, and each website has no server issues, or the ISP isn't blocking the site(usually they'd say not a DNS error) then one site should load as easy as another, I have these exact same issues when I have ad-blockers enabled on certain sites (some you'd expect to work).. do you run a blocker of any form? try disabling it and trying again on that website..

No ad blocker.
I tried a variation of your solution and made the phone only connect to 3G or lower which seems to have solved the issue even when I switch back to 4G, hopefully it's not just a coincidence. Thanks for your advice.
Three UK user here, just tried the service menu 4G force and that seems to work for me, I shall see how it goes. Good for dead spot testing
So a few days later: Leaving it on means 4G pretty much everywhere I go but the obvious downside is no calls even through the ThreeInTouch app. Bit of a downer so back to watching it sit on 4G until I want to actually use it then it goes 'Hey let me check jump back to regular H for you'
