So I am currently running CM7 RC1 but I hear some of the new nightlies have WiMAX up and running. I have not had 4G on my phone since I first rooted and flashed my first rom on my phone months ago (November). Are there any steps like updating radios I need to take before flashing?
I have never updated my radios or PRL (are they the same?) and I know I need to flash a Sense rom to do so, so I will most likely do that. Any Sense rom recommendations?
Do I need to flash an updated WiMAX radio or is that also done within the Sense rom?
Also, which nightlies have WiMAX?
Sorry if I sound like a complete noob. I have flashed at least 20 roms on my phone (mainly MIUI, CM6 and CM7 versions) and am not a complete noob when it comes to flashing roms. I have just never updated my radios so I want to make sure I am doing it right!
Yes, updating the radio can't hurt. PRL and radios are related, but the same. The radio helps your signal strength and the PRL basically allows access to more towers to increase signal. You need to have a wimax enable kernel as well. Also nightly 6-8 [8 is the most current] have wimax.
Edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485 Has all the radios. You can flash the first link in recovery like any rom and you'll be all set. Also, any sense rom will do to update your PRL, myn's rom is nice. I find mykfroyo aesthetically unappealing.
Any of the nightlys currently available include wimax. The latest is #8 runs smooth with hardly any issues.
There are also combo radio zip to upgrade your radios. Do this. On a sense rom and make sure to update profile and prl. Then flash the nightly.
Also the kernal baked in works great. I can get 20 hours easy

So if I just download the top link in teh roxxorz link to the radios that says "Combo" that will update them all for me in one flash?
So how about this.
1. Flash Sense based rom
2. Update profile and PRL
3. Flash the "Combo" radio zip to update radios
4. Flash CM7 Nighltly (in this case the newest version, or the previous one since I have heard 8 has some issues)
5. Flash WiMAX enabled kernel (doesn't the stock CM7 already have a compatible kernel?) or maybe Baked in by your suggestion?
How do these steps sound? Any issues or am I good to go?
You're good to go. Just for reference, the included kernel has wimax, so you don't have to flash a new one if you don't want to.
One more quick question. I'm in the middle of doing these steps and everything is going great.
Does updating your PRL, Profile and flashing the WiMAX radios mean they will stay updated even if I wipe my phone and install new roms on them? Or do I have to update them every time?
They'll stay updated if you wipe all data ect. You will have to update you PRI though if you switch to a sense rom to update your PRL though, othwerwise you don't have to.
So I just updated my PRL, Profile and flashed the Combo WiMAX radio update while in Myn's rom. Now I am going to wipe and flash Cyanogenmod 7 nightly #8. So you are saying I still need to update my PRI after I get CM7 on my phone?
Just backup all your apps, and do a clean wipe. When going from AOSP <-> Sense, if you don't do a full wipe, you tend to get bootloops, and when you restore the apps, only do apps and data, not system settings.

You should do it before you flashed cm to save yourself time. But whenever you want just nandroid cm and update through sense.

I did the PRI in Myn's rom included in the bundled zip.

Well seems you're good to go.
So it seems everything went well and I now have 4G!
The only problem I am having now is that Titanium failed me for the second time at restoring my apps! Again I have to redownload all of my apps from the market, then restore the data backups. It keeps giving me an error message when I try to restore the apps from Titanium. This happened on CM7 RC1 too.
Any recomendations for another app to backup and restore all my apps and data in the future? I am getting fed up with Titanium...

I think this is a known issue with TB on CM7 with the current nightlies.
personally, I use My Backup Pro. you can backup texts, mms, home screen layout and system settings. (obviously going from CM7 to say Myns you wouldn't want to restore system settings.) it can backup your alarms and so forth.
also it can back them up to the "cloud" so you don't waste space on your SD card.

Hmm, I guess I am not the only one which makes me feel better. I will have to try My Backup Pro. As long as it backs up my apps data I am happy, all my Angry Bird's progress...I shudder just thinking about losing it.... And yes, I would definately not restore system settings when going between roms, made that mistake once...
Edit: Oh yah, what is the difference between the paid version called My Backup Pro, and the free version My Backup Root?
I'm running the latest nightly but even in known 4g area the phone just keeps scanning. Checked my keys and that's ok.
Anyone else having this issue?

All prl does is update the roaming list. Adds new towers so unless u travel alot it's not such a big deal to worry about keeping this updated.
You will need to update ur profile anytime u mess with the radios with a sense rom to basically sync your new radio configuration or "profile " to sprint
And do yourself a favor and get. Sculpted 2.0 theme for the latest nightly. Shift really tricked this one out.

The only reason i am paranoid is that I am still slightly new to flashing and like asking questions. (it took me a long time to work up the courage and flash what i have.) Also when i updated clockwork (to 2.5.1.2) i saw people having problems flashing new roms etc. so i didnt update anymore.
Backing up is not a problem (plan on using astro and sms backup)
Also should i use clockwork (version?) for fresh evo and RA for toast?
Again just looking for a smooth install. My phone is my baby and only source for internet..
Thank you for taking the time to read, even more if you reply and help.

I never have problems with clockwork but, I always flash from recovery and wipe catche partition and dalvik cache. You also need to upgrade to the current version of clockwork. You current version does not save you wimax keys.

So youre saying if i update to 2.6.0.1 and ill be fine. Just wipe the cache and all that?
Any suggestion on which kernel version?
Nandroid what you have first. I also have never had problems with clockwork, RA on the other hand on 2 separate occasion caused issue I could not fix!
I forgot to mention nandroid.
I am updateing clockwork now.
I am going to try tonight and hopefully post back if all goes well. Im going with 4.3.1 bfs havs.
***EDIT***
All is well.
I guess i just wanted to hear good feedback.
And i tried clearing the cache, i waited 30-40 minutes. Still was at the White Boot screen.
Restored from nandroid and installed 3.5.0.1 w/o wiping cache. worked within 5 minutes.
Hello and sorry for the inconvenience. I'm new to rooting and updating my evo. I have 2.2 android version since i rooted my evo and i rooted it with unrevoked 3. Now i keep getting updates from my phone but cant install them because im rooted. I was wondering how can i update my evo to the latest android version which is 2. something and how can i also update the latest fota version that's 3.70.
I don't know if i need to install a new ROM or get the update online. Your help would be grateful and thanks in advance.
You have to flash updated roms to keep your phone updated...thats the only way AFAIK
Any custom rom will get rid of the update notifications, and all are based on the newest OTA by now. I think the only 2.3 gingerbread rom is the CM7 nightly, which is very stable and very nice
Before you flash a new rom you will want to make sure you have one of the custom recoveries, RA for example is what i use for my flashing.
What Radio and software are you running?
software 2.2 and what do you mean by radio, basebad or kernel
Have you checked your phone to be sure you have S- off? There is a Rom in the developers section that has the latest OTA 3.70... but I do concur with the guys above in that you need to flash a custom Rom.
Go to the market and download Rom Manager. By using unrevoked I believe you now have clockworkmod as your custom recovery. And I'm pretty sure it would b version 2.6.0.1 which is the good one. By using Rom Manager you can flash a custom Rom directly through the app. My favorite is by far Cyanogen 6.1.2. The only downside is 4g isn't currently working. But the upsides by far outway that issue.

thanks and as we speak im doing a nandroid back up and want to know out of
myn's and calk's
which one is the best and if both of them work with 4g and i wanted to know if i do a nandroid backup will all my apps and contacts be deleted?
Both are good ROMs but every time I go try out a new ROM, I always go back to Calk's. I like it best but that's just my personal opinion. Once you feel comfortable flashing try them all out. I would reccomend using titanium back up to back up all of your apps though so when you flas a new ROM you can easily recover all your apps.
thanks and will it erase all my contact when i flash a new rom?? cause i already did an nandroid backup. and i want to download calks. SO whats my next step here. does calk work with 4g since i have htc evo 4g. sorry because im an amateur and dont know that much about this
Yes your contacts will be erased but once you log back in with your google acct they will resync. Yes, Calk's Rom supports 4G.
Download Calk's format all (not necessary but just something I personally use) & install it to root of the SD card
http://www.mediafire.com/?ikylelx99c49133
Same with the ROM, DL it to SD card root
reboot into recovery (vol down & power)
Factory wipe
Wipe Dalvik
Install zip from SD Card
Calk's format all
EViO v1.8
After it's done installing the phone will appear to hang a the splash screen This is normal for a first boot after a flash just let it do it's thing. It will eventually come up, I promise.
Enjoy your new ROM
one more thing and sorry to bother you how can i make sure all my contacts are with my gmail account

Hey guys, I'm just wondering of the currently nightlies, which one is running the smoothest? Also, if I'm on CM7 GB6, how do I upgrade to a nightly properly? full wipe and install?
http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=supersonic
The latest nightlies. Download, and flash like any other rom. just be sure to re-flash the latest gapps with it to be safe.
Edit: Also, from 6+ they all include the wimax, so no worries there.
i think the easiest way is to just use Clockwork Rom Manager.
You can get the nightlies directly from the app, and also receive push notifications when they are released every night. It's very simply with Rom Manager.
Also, coming from an existing CM7 ROM, you don't have to do a full wipe when moving over to nightlies. It won't hurt, but i have successfully gone back and forth without wiping many times.

Any word on when RC2 will be released?
I just installed Synergy RC1 and had been running CM7. I just tried to update profile and prl because since I have been using asop for 7 months I haven't updated anything but I get error 1012 could not be completed when trying to update either profile or prl. My signal has been weaker in last couple weeks so I decided to try sense rom so I could update. Whats the easiest way to update? Any help for a noob? Thanks Again!
That's the only way I know of, I think there may be flashable versions of the probably. Maybe try flashing a stock rooted rom and try to update
We're comin from a pure power source.
You know, a really good idea is to run the RUU on your phone, restore it to stock, root it, flash recovery and do a nandroid, so you have a stock, rooted nandroid you can flash back to whenever you need to update your PRL, etc.....
Good call on that
We're comin from a pure power source.
I do have a stock backup but was trying to avoid restoring and thats one of the reasons I came back to Sense so I could update. Are most people able to update their profile and prl while running Synergy RC1? Maybe it's a server issue in my area I'll try again later and if no go I'll restore stok rom. Are you able to update while using sense roms? Thanks Again!
As I recall that ROM supports all the EPST codes. Can you not do a ##775# in the dialer and enter your MSL? Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I thought you could update PRL that way...

I and a couple of friends cannot do updates with synergy. As the post above mention...do a backup of stock rooted..I use sprint lovers...restore and update then restore synergy back. No more time than to drink a cup of coffee...
I was able to perform the PRL and PRI updates after rebooting into recovery (AmonRA) and clearing Cache and Dalvik again. Also, make sure you're using wireless network, not WIFI. Also, this was addressed in the Synergy threads.

Just did what you told...no dice....are you using rc1 or a nightly?
It works with MikG 2.2 Sense 2.1 ROM. Great ROM by the way
Make sure you are not Roaming when you update Profile or PRL.
I had this problem the first time I flashed synergy. I ended up rewiping everything 3 times, then used format all 3 times, partitioned sd card to ext3 then flashed rom along with the carousel and widget zip. Rom now works flawlessly and updates work fine!
This worked for me too, thankfully, just got everything set up like I want and its running great didnt want to have to wipe and reflash. (until my new sd card gets here and I can do a backup - out of space on my current card )
If you guys are having trouble on synergy, go into ##3282# choose edit then enter you msl. Goto data profile, and hit menu, then restore, then commit changes, then reboot. Worked for me every time!

So I did this, and then it after reboot it tried to do hands free OTA, failed, and left me without data connection. In phone update, I still recieved 1012 error on both profile and prl under both wifi on and wifi off.
I'm at present doing a nand restore.
So after nand restore, hard reboot, cache and dalvik wipe and reboot, error still occurs. I now have no 3g service. Anyone have any idea how to fix this sans calling sprint?

I ran into this issue when attempting to update my profile and it was due to the fact that I was hooked up to my WIFI. Once I disabled my WIFI, I ran the update profile and it took less then a minute to complete.
As for the prl, I switched over to amon-ra because clockwork gave me problems. Hopefully this helps you out. Don't forget to hit the Thanks button.

I am an OG Evo owners and just getting back into flashing and trying out different roms. Back when I would flash custom roms, the tool of choice for backing up data+apps was Titanium backup. Has this changed?
I am on Blazer 1.7 right now and would like to update to 1.9 but I don't want to lose all of my data and apps. He says something in his OP about there being an update.zip, but I don't see it anywhere. Is this pretty common for devs to include a update.zip that lets you seamlessly upgrade from version to version of the same custom rom?
With the OG Evo, you couldn't back up data from a ASOP rom and then flash over to a sense ROM and restore your data or else it would crap out on you. Is there anything that I need to watch out for in that respect?
So I have two questions
1. How do I retain my apps and information going from the same custom rom to a updated version of that custom rom?
2. How do I retain my apps and information going form one custom rom to another custom rom?
Thanks!
Hi and welcome to this awesome phone! XD

Nope, it is still the tool of choice and everything from the OG EVO applies. It's a universal tool and works the same across devices. Do a user app+data only back up from OG EVO and restore it on the SG3. Do not restore system apps from OG EVO to SG3, these are the apps that are red or yellow font in TB.

The same applies with the SG3, this is because the system apps on the stock or TW SG3 are well Touch Wiz System.UI and framework and applying these to a AOSP ROM that has completly different System.UI and framwork will bring a lot of force closes and ultimatly an unresponsive device. You can restore user apps without issues.

There are a few options for this, you can "dirty flash" the ROM and you'll have the same setup and data as before the flash. This is just flash the ROM and only wipe cache and dalvik, but you should only do this when it's an incremental update from the same ROM. Although some say it is best to do a complete wipe and then flash the ROM even if it's incremental update of the same... One thing reported from some doing a dirty flash is poor battery performance or randon force closes, only way to fix this is a clean flash. Also, the dev (usually) let's the user base know if there was a change to the System.UI or framework and needing a clean install of the incremental update. This was also the case back in the OG EVO. Try the different options and see what's best for you.

Gotcha! No worries here, just hit apply update and it'll reboot and "try" to install but it will fail since you have a custom bootloader. It won't brick the phone at all, unlike ye ol EVO :/
The thing that has bricked many SG3 has been flashing a ROM the international version... stay away from those.
BTW if you think Blazer is smooth, try FreeGS3, you'll be blown away haha
There's also a JB leak from Sprint in the dev section, I'm trying that tonight.

You can also restore some system apps, but be careful with which ones. I usually restore dialer storage, msg storage, wifi settings and account sync settings.
