Manual Update of HTC to Gingerbread - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HTC has announced they will be releasing a Gingerbread update to the original Desire. My present Desire is currently rooted and S-OFF'ed, so I know I wont get the OTA notification because my phone doesn't match up. But will I be able to download the OTA package and then do a manual update or will that one stop because my phone doesn't match?
Would an Unroot be enough or would I need to restore the Security to its On position again in order to be able to update either way?. And what about the apps I removed, would I have to readd these or what?.

A rooted ROM will be posted in a day, so you will easily just flash that.

If you really want official GB that badly, unroot, and return to stock - then only is it totally safe to use the official update

Agreed, but that would only be a good idea if you plan to stay unrooted!
If you want to run a custom rom, there is no reason to return to stock!

At this moment I dont have any use or desire for a custom rom. All I actually want is get the new GB update from HTC when it comes out. Just not sure I can do that without a lot of hassle considering my phone is presently rooted, has S-OFF and i removed apps.
Unless all the apps will return when I unroot?. But in essence it wont really mattter as my Desire would be laying in a drawer somewhere at that point anyway . When I get my new phone my Desire is getting retired, much the same way my G1 was retired when I got my Desire.

Need help debranding Orange HTC Desire for Stock Froyo

Hey guys,
I am a total newb on all this debranding, flashing business. Spend the past week checking all sorts of forums etc and also waiting endlessly for froyo to be released to our Desires! Problem is i am still a bit unclear, so if anyone could give me help, that'd be really nice
Ok, here is the thing:
I have an Orange branded phone, got it via phones4u on orange, ive already unlocked it with a code and currently using 02 Sim on it.
I'd like to retain my warranty, so wouldn't like to root, so my other choice is flashing it right ? :S
I just want the stock froyo on my HTC, but since its orange branded i heard that there might be some problems with radio or something :S
Tbh, I dont even know what radio means! LOL i just want the stock Froyo released by HTC, on my phone without waiting for orange to bring their crapped down version
Any help, please!!!
PS: ive got a spar memory card for any gold card business, just need some pointers for that
De-branding could technically void your warranty but you'll need to search for making a goldcard on the forum and then flash with either 2.1 and update via OTA or Froyo (though I'm not sure that's possible just yet).
oh i see , once i flash it , will i have to install anything else like radios etc? :S
By using the stock rom, does it mean that, next time htc releases a update i can just do it ota?
there is no other way apart from voiding warranty is there ?:S
As you've already unlocked you're good to go! The whole thing should take about 30 minutes but you'll lose all you're data.
I think you'll have to void your warranty but I reckon it's worth it to rid of Monopoly, Bowling, and Orange-bloody-Messenger and get Froyo now.
just one thing what are the chances of my phone bricking up and where can i get the stock rom with froyo released by htc? Also once i got the stock rom, what happens with updates? will OTA be working properly or do i have to reflash it everytime there is an update??
can someone show me a step by step guide on how to do this all? :O
I am a total newb on this

Well I've just stepped through that portal... Unlocked the phone then OTA 2.1 update followed by OTA 2.2 stock rom. Now running Froyo on 'Orange' phone.
Flawless, just going through my apps now. Needed the newest version of HTC Sync though.

oh i see, could you please show me where you got the instructions to get your phone unbranded, where you got the roms and radios etc? still not 100% sure on how to do that :O
Ive decided i am gonna get rid of all this orange crap lol

new update by htc? lets wait

Hi i just checked out of routine waiting for gingerbread lol sad,but anyway htc have released a system update looks like just simple updates etc. my phone just wont allow it for some reason, when i had my upgrade it was on vodafone, but changed the rom to an unbranded rom.so i could get froyo. I had the first update they let out in november but this one just wont have it.my phone displays the red triangle.ive read briefly on here could be the rom i installed casuing this
my question is until gingerbread arrives is it worth faffing around changing roms etc just for this maninentence update.
also if i decided to use one of these customs roms and root etc,is it easy to revert the phone back to the current state if i wanted stock gingerbread
You can get FroYo. There is no 'stock gingerbread'.
Gingerbread is not officially available for Desire, and probably won't be for a few months.
If you root your phone, you can have gingerbread and yes you can go back to stock.
Just got the update as well - is there a changelog somewhere?
What update? I don't get no OTA at this time...
If your talking about the 2.29.405.5 OTA for some reason it can't be applied to debranded phones as it detects the original branding. I had the same problem. with my orange uk desire. The only way to apply it is to run the RUU for this update.

if it is the 2.29.405.5 update there's another thread discussing what may have changed.
There's some suggestion that its a few camera fixes

[Q] No OTA updates available after debranding and downgrading

Hi guys, I've been searching the forum for a while but I still can't find a solution/reason for what it's happening to my DZ, which I bought from England and vodafone branded.
Soon after the first configuration I upgraded to 1.72 as suggested, but I couldn't know that rooting was then no more possible. I didn't want to be stuck on a vodafone branded and only-english rom, so I debranded succesfully my DZ by downgrading to a stock htc 1.34 rom (RUU_Vision_HTC_WWE_1.34.405.5_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155556_signed), obtaining then permroot + superCID.
Now my rom speaks italian (as I wanted) and is rooted, but if I check manually for updates, I get only a message telling me that the phone is updated and there are no new upgrades available.
I tried to:
- look for updates before rooting and with s-on (CID vodap_001), waiting even for 1 week
- put back the gold card I used to downgrade and then checking for OTA
- check for updates with root, superCID and s-off
Is there any reason for that?
How can I update again to 2.2.1 (1.72 & 1.83)?
ps: I prefer a stock rom for the moment instead of a custom rom
Any help/opinion is appreciated!
There won't be any OTA updates once you've rooted and de-branded. And if there are, do not accept them, as they will either fail or possibly unroot/brick your phone.
Your option will to be to find a rooted, stock ROM that comes with the latest OTA software package already installed. Check the dev section, they have a list of ROMs. You may not be able to find the exact specific ROM you've currently got, but there are many choices that can come close.
First of all, thanks for prompt answering martonikaj.
I thought I could receive and install ota updates since there was a stock rom with superCID in my devide.. which is different from having a custom rom like Virtuos.
What about users telling they had downgraded-debranded-rooted their DZ and can receive and install successfully OTA updates??
Flashing a rooted stock rom implies wiping everything.. and I prefer to avoid that.
There's a rooted 1.82 stock ROM at : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960149 . Really if you're going to make that huge version jump you should do a wipe. Back up your stuff with Titanium backup first

Sorry but in all my times rooting and modding devices, applying OTA updates has never been something that works with rooted devices.
Unfortunately, yes, if you want to upgrade to the rooted version of the latest OTA ROM, you're gonna have to wipe everything and start from fresh with the new ROM.
Same here
Hi,
The same thing is exactly happening to me. My phone keeps telling me that there is not update but the software number is 1.34, which from what I've read is an older firmware. Shouldn't my phone be able to detect the update?
The question isnt whether rooted is better, but why our phones are not receiving any ota. Granting that stock rom is not better, the problem is there is no notification at all that there is an update.
FYI, I have flashed an official rue version but still has s-off. :-D I don't know if having s-off would prevent the phone from finding an update.
Think about it this way people: when you mod your phone by rooting, it's like cutting the imbillical cord with your carrier/manufacturer's update servers. Don't worry about why, just have that mentality as it will make all your lives easier. If you rooted, why would you want a stock rom that limits you?
If you want stock with sense, go for GingerSense, Vitruous, etc..
If you want stock w/o sense, go for any of the other pre-rooted G2 roms.
I really don't understand why people would complain about OTA updates when you can backup and update to a rom of your choice whenever you want. Plus, if you don't like it, you can revert! Something you cannot do with a stock OTA update.

Rooting question

Recently i rooted my evo with the unrvoked 3 forever, i was wondering if id be able to get the OTA offical update when it comes out and also when i do get gingerbread will it automatically unroot my phone?
Sent from my HTC Evo
It will unroot your phone and yes you will get OTA updates BUT
YOu will still have S-off to my understanding.
I would under no circumstances take a ota update if your rooted. Just wait a day or so and flash a rooted version. You could run into issues otherwise.
Don't Do It
I agree. Don't ever do an OTA update once rooted or you will have to do it all over again. Like previously stated, just wait a day or two and you can get a rooted version of the OTA. Also, go flash the ROM now. The devs have plenty of GB Sense 1.0 & 2.1 ROMS for the EVO. Why wait for a official OTA?
I guess i just want the offical release lol, when i get home ill try flashing gingerbread

[Q] How to set back to factory so I can receive OTAs

A while ago I rooted a friends phone so they could play with custom roms. I used the Unrevoked3 tools to do the root and I believe I did the S-off with Unrevoked forever. She doesn't really want to mess with it anymore and as a result of the root she is stuck on Froyo. What needs to be done in order to get her back to a state where she can recieve the OTA updates?
I'm not sure what prevents the OTA but off the top of my head it could be any or all of these:
Custom Recover
S-Off
Custom Rom
Updated Radio
She is using a Sense Rom currently (I believe Virtuous) as she wanted to make it look as similar to what she was used to before. I'm hoping to prevent wiping it as well if possible. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get this back to a point where she can get the Gingerbread update and possibly point me to the instructions on how to do it?
This will help you get back to stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786436
By doing this she will no longer have root and may not be able to regain root again.
If she wants a stock Gingerbread Rom, just flash the Stock Plus Gingerbread Rom in the dev section. It'd is a lot easier/faster and still have root. Also going back to stock for future updates may be pointless as this phone may no longer get any other updates.

I checked out that thread but it looked old and it was a little confusing. What I really need to know is which component needs to replaced in order to get OTAs. I don't need the phone set to factory. In fact I would prefer to keep the current data in tact. I just need to allow the phone to receive the official gingerbread OTA. If that OTA removes root then that's fine. My friend just doesn't want to have to manually load updates going forward and she doesn't care about root.
Go here and download the Froyo RUU the PB31IMG version http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=22 . Then make sure the file is named PB31IMG and place it on the root of your SD Card boot in to Hboot, let it load and press volume up to accept the install and it'll do it's thing. I'm not sure if this will give you stock recovery, which you need to receive the OTA updates. If it does not get it here http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=28 and follow the same PB31IMG steps as I mentioned above (Make sure you delete the RUU PB31IMG file first ). Then just wait for the update. I think you can try the Giongerbread RUU as well and you will be good to go but I have never tried that one before.
I would probably just stick with root and get the stock plus rooted rom. The plus features alone are much much better then what the stock offers anyways.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1260994
And if she is still on froyo then I would assume she still has the froyo radio, so don't forget to flash the new gingerbread radio to coincide with the new gingerbread rom you just flashed for her

Of course if you would like to simply revert the phone back to stock with the newest OTA out, simply run this from your computer

To receive the ota you need to have the stock recovery, and have all stock apps still installed and enabled. To get to complete stock you need to do an ruu. Either a PB31IMG.zip thru hboot, or the ruu.exe with a pc. However this latest released ota is the final update our phones will ever officialy get, so you dont have to worry about future otas. That being said i would just do as others have sugested and flash one of the stock roms, either wildstangs ota rom or jermaines stock plus. Wildstangs is complete stock, and jermaines is stock with some cool features added. You can find them both in the dev section.
