Im asking this on the evo thread to so I can hear both sides. I have two days left before my 30 are up and I don't know if I should stick with the epic or jump ship. I do think it is a great phone but I don't want to be stuck with a forgotten phone like with me pre. And the gps is killing me

i came from evo about a month ago. i preffer the epic, becuase it has better hardware. the evo does have a slightly bigger screen that is very nice though. the evo also has more support in the dev community. but still epic wins in my opinion
It all comes down to personal preference.
Some pros for the Epic might be:
Hardware Keyboard.
Higher quality screen.
Better graphics processor.
(In summary, hardware)
Some pros for the Evo would be:
Larger screen (though less energy efficient)
Slightly thinner.
Better community support including great CyanogenMod support.
Or if you don't like CM, Sense is ok.
(In summary, software)

Epic can't compare to the EVO from a development standpoint. The EVO even has 4G available on Cyanogen now. I have an EVO, my wife just got an Epic, and my EVO has had 2.3 available since last year. If you're going to be rooting your device, IMO, it's EVO without question. FAR more ROMs, far more themes, far more love overall from the dev community. There are people right now working on a Honeycomb port for the EVO based on the 3.0 SDK. When do you think the Epic will EVER sniff something like that?
My wife got the Epic for the great camera features, the screen, and the hardware keyboard (she won't consider a phone without a real keyboard). I would gladly consider a Samsung device if they sold like the EVO did because then everyone would have one and you'd have devs all over the place like the EVO has.
Oh, and my wife also has navigation in her car, so that made the horrible GPS on the Epic a non-issue.

We are making progress on CM7, and WiMax should come very quickly to us, as our WiMax driver is now open source and in-kernel. EVO devs had to reverse engineer WiMax to get it working in CM.
As for the Honeycomb SDK ports. An SDK port is usually better known as an Emulator port. They're hackish and not very wise to use on your phone. Definitely a fun proof-of-concept though. I do however have confidence that once Honeycomb hits AOSP, it will be ported to Evo properly.

Yeah, GPS only worked for me on the earliest of eclair versions, it's been very frustrating.
The keyboard was why I went with the epic to begin with, but I only use it for gaming. I heard that game gripper is going to be making a bluetooth game pad so that's not a plus anymore. The main reason im thinking about switching is I don't want a phone that will never be updated. I am rooted with supernova's new rom which its amazing but there are still bugs that im not sure samsung will ever fix. I hate having to walk around my back yard trying to get a gps fix. Every other phone I've had locked within second from my living room.

Where did I say I was taking about epic developers. I was referring to xda. And stop being a fanboy. Both are great phones. Beyond the fact samsung can suck a fat one the hardware is better on the epic. The software I'll leave to the devs. However, with swype I don't need my physical keyboard anymore. My gps works flawlessly in my epic. The compass however is retarded no matter what fixes I employ.

If we would of had the source as long as the evo has had theirs for we wouldn't be so far.behind them. Stick with the epic to many evo fanboys out there.

Might want to follow Clearwire...looks like Sprint is jumping ship over to LTE in the near future.
I really enjoy my Epic; more so ocne I decided on a ROM (midNight).
I haven't had any issues with Nav or anything for that matter (uhg, I bet I just jinxed myself)
I am one that HAS to have a keyboard, BUT .. Swype is awesome. The larger screen makes using a virtual keyboard much easier that in the Instinct and Moment days. I swore after the Instict (which took 3-4 presses each time to get the right character, OMG that used to frustrate me.. I digress) i'd never use a virtual keyboard again. I'd say its 50/50 right now with me.
For me the hardware was a big seller and I wanted android without sense on it; now I just bought my daughter the Evo Shift 4G. Rooted it and ROMed it.
The rooting process was NOT as simple as samsung rooting has been with Moment and Epic. I had to push and run all the adb commands. Spoiled rotten is all <grin> course it is brand new and that phone feels REAL solid in your hand.
Anyhow, really goes to person preference. There are subtle differences but overall you can go wrong with any of the 4G devices.
Good luck; let us know what you picked and why.
I think I'm going to stay with the epic. Its just tough cause my last two phones were the palm pre and the instinct. Both phones were supposedly the best phones and ended up being the biggest pieces of crap. Now I do love webos and I know many of you do to but after 14 replacements in the year that I had the phone I couldn't deal with it anymore. If there was a way to put webos on this phone I would new in heaven
i do rom jump quite a bit but currently running supernova with the genocide kernel. midnight is is one of my favs and my heart goes out to him and his family. I read his lost and tired blog all the time. If I wasn't currently laid off I would be sending donations his way.
The main reason I'm staying with the epic is it has such a great community.
And the screen doesn't hurt either

As the title says. I have a HTC evo 4g on sprint. I am selling it due to needing money for bills. I have been looking at either the Samsung moment. HTC hero. Lg lotus elite. Or the LG rumor touch. What is the hero and the moment like when rooted. I had a Samsung moment for about 2 days and didn't like it due to it freezing up. And slow response. Is it any better or even comparable to the evo in speed wise. Also what about the hero and the other two non smartphones. Thanks again in.advance.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Don't know about the LG but I have some experience with the moment and hero. In relation to development and rooting, neither compare to the EVO. DON'T get a moment. Imo they are pure garbage and have extremely little development support. In terms of quality and dev support I feel the hero is a much better phone. Although, development has slowed significantly since the EVO's release. I still feel HTC builds the best Android phones.

look into the intercept or something. There is another Samsung phone that kinda has the build of the Epic 4g but is just an upgraded Intercept. I can't remember the name unfortunately, but it should be on the Sprint website.

I've read on some other forums that the Intercept is just as crappy as the Moment. The other one is called the Transform and I also read that it was buggy. I read that the LG Optimus S is supposed to be pretty good. It is an entry level phone, but ships with FROYO! It's also the best looking of the entry level Androids IMO. I think it comes out next week. You also have the Sanyo Zio as an option which is supposed to be pretty good as well.
How about the LG lotus elite or the LG rumor touch. I know This is probably not the right place to ask but how about blackberry. I know there is a 8330.8530. Bb tour. Bold.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I dunno, I really think Android is the best OS so I can't recommend anything other than Android phones.
The lotus and rumor are both dumbphones - completely different experience. I've handled a non-working model of the optimus though, and I have to say, I was VERY impressed with the build quality. It's a bit heavy for the size, but its a very solid feeling phone, better than any of the samsungs. To the point that it makes me think that LG will be a real player if/when they roll out a high end Android phone.

I would think so - it's an htc android device, and it's dev section here on xda looks pretty active. It's also runs cm. But I don't know if I would want to rely on the dev community entirely if I didn't have to - of course if you get one pretty cheap, the pros might outweigh the cons.
and btw, did you really think anyone on this forum was going to point you to something other than android?
The hero already has 2.2 over there in the dev forum.

Are those strong enough words to deter you from getting a Moment? (GPS sucks, data lockup issues if you download too many things or stream music, and overall lag due to no memory) Oh, and the dev community is still going a bit, but the stud developer got an Evo and is working on Evo stuff now.
I got my wife a moment when they first came out. She hates it...nothing but problems, freezes up, no signals, no email notifications, battery sux! Just overall bad phone. I would have to say one of the worst ones we have ever owned.

But then I found xda and more importantly cyanogenmod for the hero, which is in rc right now. It is an android 2.2 rom that supports overclocking and let me tell you that as much as I would love to have an evo this hero is
Amazing. My wife has the moment and it is ****ty.. Get the hero. Root install cyanogen rom. You won't regret it.

Whatever you do, DO NOT get a Samsung Moment. The hardware is very bad and has nothing but problems. You will hate that phone. I had huge data lockup issues, no signal, around 4 hours battery life, the phone would mysteriously "black out", GPS was all over the place and laaaaag. At least it was easy to root, but it didn't play nice with root, also the graphics accelerator was a complete joke, so 3d games or any games with multiple layers are totally out of the question. Id go with the hero and OC that bad boy.
If i exchange my EVO this will be my fourth one. Dust, screen seperation, light leakage .

I'm also curious....As much as I love my Evo, I cannot get used to not having a physical keyboard. I have used the stock one, and also used fresh and Cyanogenmod. I have the HTC_IME special keyboard and just can't get used to it. I have noticed that the gingerbread one seems to be a lot easier to type on....I just can't seem to find on how to download it along with installing it. But people who have the Samsung Epic 4G I'm curious what everyone thinks about it.
my girlfriend also has an epic its nothing special with the dev work going on there. If you get an epic expect to have a very stock experience and the gps is rather finkey on that phone
Please do!!!!!
I came frome an epic.
Shotty build quality
Gps rarely worked right
Has the physical keyboard but would miss letters all the time.(button was hit but it wouldn't register.
Screen is nice but not big enough for me.
Always alot of wobble from the screen and the keyboard.
I kept mine for 4 months. I loved the screen but the issues it had and a lack dev support compared to the evo made me switch.
Love the evo, im used to the onscreen keyboard and I like it alot better.

ROFLMAO! I read Sultan.of.swing's response, and I was like "damn, I don't remember responding in this thread". Then I realized it wasn't me. I was in exactly the same boat. Just traded my Epic for an Evo, and couldn't be happier. GPS never worked. Keyboard just felt janky, and made the phone feel so unstable and wobbly. I LOVED the screen on the Epic, but that was about it. Every time I hit the power key, it felt like it was gonna slip out of my hand or fall apart or something. And the fact that it STILL doesn't have official Froyo is just sad. I highly doubt I'll ever buy another Samsung phone. I've had so few problems with my two HTC phones (Nexus One and Evo), that they really made the Epic feel like a toy. That's the best description I can give of the Epic. Yeah, it may have better specs overall, but it seriously feels like a damn toy.

I love this phone, have played with friends shifts and they feel flimsy on my opinion, I rooted using the method detailed in the syndicate frozen rom in development section and then flashed that rom with no problem however you should try to find the most reliable update version to eb13 as some people have been experiencing problems with it however the only problem I have experienced on "stock" eb13 is the screen rotation lag. I used the zip method from samsung when they had the download available but they pulled it. Im sure theres a good copy of that file here on the forums somewhere... Anyways back to what you were probably asking, yes I would choose this phone again over a shift or any other phone available through sprint especially if you are comfortable rooting and flashing.

I was a previous evo owner. I switched because I dropped my evo and broke it and had no insurance. For some reason the epic was selling cheaper on ebay so decided to go with it. I gotta say overall the experience was great with both phones. I gotta give the edge to the evo as far as development but that's it. The devs on epic forums do a fantastic job with what they have which is froyo sources that are buggy as hell but I have no complaints.
Btw the screen on the epic is so much more vibrant I love it. Syndicate and bonsai seem to be most popular roms. From experence both are stable but I prefer bonsai because those devs make upgrading so easy no wipe required.
Check stickies in development rooting is just a click away.

If you do in fact go with the evo and want to upgrade it to 2.2 right away (like i did) here is the method I used
Just download step #1, than go straight to #11 it is very easy and I have no problems whatsoever with it although they say there is risk involved...
Also, a good root for EXT4 is Here
And the Rom i run now (super fast)
I totally miss my evo just due to the number of different roms on them. Miui rom is so leet and its really stable now especiallly
Cm7 is in alpha, epic has a mostly stable MIUI rom now, and good devs from ACS, Team Viper, PTFMedic (forgive me if that was wrong) just to name a few.

I traded my evo for an epic, quadrant scores mean nothing unless you play games on phones which I dont, the only reason I traded was because I got bored with hacking the hell out of the evo, I personally think samsung phones are garbage compared to htc and I would take the evo back in a second.
I thing the epic devs are awesome and do a great job, but there are alot more options with the evo as far as developement goes. Is the epic faster? Hell yes, but so what.

Krazy I just got my epic on the weekend and now might be regreting because of the development but cm7 is here and cooking. Either way the epic is sick ashell but the development on the evo is a slaughter house for the epic. So much for my evo killer but wil get there sooner or later
Bought an Epic to play with back in Nov. and hated it. Loved the hardware though.
Gun Bros pushed me over the edge, combined with Sprint taking my yearly upgrade.
The Evo can't hold out until October. I'm hoping the Epic I swapped my Asurion replacement for can.
I'll miss dev support and cm7 for now, I need my phone to work, what I see epic support has come a long way, my main gripe back in November, I'm excited about the swap.
Honestly though the decision would've been harder if my Asurion replacement wasn't dinged around the camera and didn't have a purple hue in it's hd v2 screen.
Enough if my insomniacal babbling.
I have an epic and my wife an evo. Yes there are alot more developers on the evo I still love my epic. Its faster, better screen and better gpu.

Hardware and performance...The evo performs better than the shift and epic, and the evo has better developer commitment. Personally never liked sliding keyboards because it makes them more vulnerable to breaking on the hinges no matter how well you take care of it.
And if you're gona spend close to 200$ on a phone, make it worth while.
the epic is $99 at radio shacks website (web only price) and the evo shift is $129 on radio shacks website.so,no matter what,im not buying the phone from sprints website or retail store to save money.if more people did that, they would save more money on phones.
i'd wait for the evo 3d. estimated about a month away. duel core 1.2 ghz processer. qhd screen. glassesless 3d photos and videos (can be turned off so don't cry about it), better everything. just wait a little bit.. you won't be sorry.
btw if youre doing it for the keyboard, swype is much better than a harware kb, mainly because it's just as fast one handed.

1. As stated, you can get 24hrs + out of the evo, I have some screenies to prove it.
2. Swype I personally think is better. I don't always use it, but it is far from difficult, and fairly accurate.
3. Well exactly, but you pay for quality, and its an invest, emt, well worth it
4. I'm mad the kyocera echo even made it into the running. It has minimal support, and any of the "dual screen" apps are few and far between. You don't need 2 screens to view 2 web pages, that's why they invented tabs.

This is NOT a Thread that I'm selling my Epic in, I need help deciding whether to keep my Epic or not. I want to change my Epic for an Evo 4G/BlackBerry. I like it and all, but the Epic just doesn't have enough development. I'd have to either get the Evo and Flash my phone EVERYday like I used to with my G1, or get a BlackBerry Bold 9650 and not Flash it at all. the Evo is a nice phone, it has all features working on CM7 which is a big plus for me, it's always up-to-date with MIUI, and was the phone I was going to get first, but it was sold out and I was impatient and I obviously regret it. Or, I could get a BlackBerry. Their much more simple and would meet my standards, but I'm afraid of Android-Withdrawal, but I could take it to OS6 and that looks cool.
So, what does everyone here think. Should I keep the Epic, let the price go down with more use, and wait to see what happens? Should I trade it in and get some cash and buy an Evo in order to fill my flashing addictions? Or should I sell it and buy a BlackBerry Tour2 9650 so that I can't Flash anymore, but have a pretty good phone? And the final option, should I just keep my Epic 4G, and live with it, and hope for the best?
Drop the epic and get an EVO lots of Rome to flash . Unless u Want to wait till September for the gingerbread update . Then the flashing begins for epic.

And even though, we'll have CM7 ROMs from 3 different developers, a few AOSP from a few different developers, and maybe 2 MIUI ROMs. I wonder if we'll ever have Sense or a Port of maybe the Droid3? Or LG Optimus 2X? I don't think we have enough people.
Someone is already working on a sense port, the same dev that's working on miui. And we have a cm7 alpha 4. We need gingerbread source code to help move us along.

I could take it to OS6 and that looks cool.

I came from a BB bold 9700. I did some beta testing for OS 6 on it. It was very nice but that is all the tinkering you could do with it was put a leak version of the OS or beta test. So I would say you have already commented on "flash withdrawal" so BB will be nice for about a month then you will be bored with it. One of the reasons I got the Epic was because of the keyboard coming from a BB and the screen size. My other options were the Intercept (which my son has) or the Shift but again the screen sold me on the Epic. I didn't even look to root or custom ROMS for at least 2 months after I bought it. But once you start it is hard to go back.
Hi my name is John and I am a flashaholic...LOL
Look up the ORD Thread in the Off-Topic. That's us. That Thread was my idea btw.
And I guess I'll stay. I guessssss...
Sounds like you've already made up your mind and are just looking for someone to talk you out of it... I carry a crackberry and my epic. The crackberry is free and I can do what I want with it, but I still keep an android that costs me ~40 bux a month and has horrific cell coverage most of the time just because it's an Android and the berry sucks for anything other than email.
I don't know much about the Evo other than it's large development base, crappy screen and lack of keyboard. If flashing a new ROM everyday is your goal, then get the Evo and live with the lackluster video performance and on screen keyboards.
If the only reason you're ditching the Epic is due to lack of development, then develop something...
I forgot to mention that the Epic's keyboard sucks and I barley use it. If at all. And I can't develop. My friends will think differently of me. Lol jk, I'm too lazy and I don't have the time. All these devs are high ballers. I wouldn't compare. They wouldn't take me as seriously.
keep the EPIC !!!!! it's a better phone !!!!!! ( just sayin' )

I mean sure EvO has more roms but how many do you really need. My sister has an EVO and I read thru the EVO section and concluded only 4-5 roms are actually worth trying Synergy-Kingdom, MIkG, MIUI, CM7 or Gingerdeck and thats about it...The last three we will hopefully get once GB is released.

Hi John!
There totally should be an AFA (Android flashers Anon) cause I'd be in it.
I've only had the Epic for a couple months, but I wouldn't trade it for any of the other phones available for Sprint right now. It's fast, great hardware, and has a full keyboard. I use a handful of other devices for work, and my Epic is the best by far. (my Galaxy Tab is a close 2nd) It feels weird not having some new rom/customization come out every couple weeks or days on the Epic, but I've adapted to a slower dev cycle that I was used to. And honestly, the only thing keeping me from running one of the GB leaks is the lack of a custom kernel to fix the hw keyboard lag. So until there's something that feels and works as good or better than my Epic, I'll be hanging on to it for dear life..
No offense but hopefully sucks.....especially if u upgrade yearly.....the good thing I learned my lesson and not going through that again.
But again that's just me.
