[Q] Possible to Use Samsung Tool.exe to unroot? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I plan to root my samsung in the near future, wondering rather than using Odin+tar files and such to revert back to stock, will the samsung EB13 flash tool unroot the phone the same way?

I would think it would. It wipes the phone completely like Odin. My guess would be you would be just like you bought it only with 2.2

[Q] Question about updating

On the Samsung website, they offer the program that upgrades your phone to the official EB13 2.2 software. My question is, will I be able to use this if I am rooted and running DK28, or would I have to unroot and reset my phone before doing this?
Yes you should go back to di18

If you go to this thread and go to the Alternative Method, it has a link to download the full EB13 and you can odin straight to that, instead of having to go back to DI18 and then updating

That exe from Samsung you are talking about should work too, it flashes EB 13 just like odin...no need to go back since it just wipes and flashes anyway
Alright, thanks for the info

Me thinks you would have a tough time unrooting with no processor
this would be a hard process... never thought bout that lol good call!
BBlunts456,
Do you have a TEP plan on the phone? If so, Sprint will replace it for free if the problem is electrical and not due to user error/abuse (like a physically damaged connector). I had this exact problem this past week. They will only accept it if you have stock firmware I was told though.
Anyway, I'm assuming you have clockworkmod and can still flash .zip files from your SD card.
Check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027904
If you flash the link ReRFS Format Stock ROM EC05 v1.01 you will end up with a stock kernel, stock RFS filesystem, and stock unrooted EC05. You will retain CWM recovery though, so you can always flash a new custom rom. However, if you want to go back to 100% stock, like I needed to, you can flash the file above and then epic4g.stock.recovery.ec05.zip. This will bring your phone back to a state where sprint will accept it. Wiping out the CWM and flashing the stock recovery makes rooting it again a very difficult prospect, as your USB doesn't work, so that's a one way street. I went to a Sprint repair store and am getting a replacement phone for free under the TEP due to the USB hardware not working electrically. But, they told me they would only take it with stock firmware, so I needed to follow the procedure I outlined above. Hope that helps.

[Q] Rooting and warranty

Hello all,
I have a friend that is wanting to uninstall the T-Mobile pre installed CRAPPS. Since the only way to do so is by rooting, he has questioned if rooting his GS2 will void his mfg warranty. Since I Sid not know and do not own a galaxy I figured I would ask here. Thanks in advanced.

Yes it does but if your friend messes up his phone and needs to send it to tmobile I recommend to flash stock on it via Odin and then send it in.

Technically it does, and if Samsung finds out that you did root it, they have the right to not honor the warranty. However, it's relatively easy to keep them from finding out that you rooted it. The basic outline of how to do it is this:
1) Flash this in CWM.
2) Flash stock kernel in CWM.
3) Flash stock ROM in Odin.
The order is important as you should only flash ROMs (and not kernels) through Odin otherwise you will trip a flash counter that Samsung can see. The first link resets the counter if you have already flashed a kernel through Odin.
Rooting will void your warranty; however, as the previous poster said, you can "unroot" and tmobile/samsung wouldn't find out in case you need a warranty repair/replacement.

I was curious about the flash counter because I see that there is a flashable zip to reset it but I've flashed everything I can think of to this phone at least once and never made it say anything but no lol so thanks for the clarification

The stock file you flash in Odin includes the kernel either way. I've never had it trip the flash counter.

As long as it's the stock official kernel it will not trip the counter

[Q] unrooting

Just to clarify, once I have the stock firmware, how exactly would I use that, along with odin to unroot my galaxy note 3? (tmobile SM-N900T) I just want to make sure I know how, for when 2.4 comes out

Not sure what you're trying to accomplish, once you Odin back to stock you lose root, but either way your device is already flagged as modified. You'll still be able to flash to 4.4 (I'm assuming that's what you meant).. If you keep root, just not OTA via carrier notice. As a matter of fact, 4.4 will probably be available here on XDA , long before it's pushed out by the provider

best method to update 4.4.2

I am having trouble with my phone with the capacitive button and no one sem to have any ideas...so my last resort will be to update to the 4.4.2 and see if that will fix it.
What's the cleaning way to update? OTA from 4.3 or should I flash official ROM with odin? OTA only has 500 MB...so I assume some stuff is not updated? When flashing from odin, does it have to be rooted? USB debug on? and which version of odin should I use? Rooting we used 3.09 and put in AP box...but other just unrooting video shows people using 1.85 and instead of AP, the file is put into PDA?
Thanks...or if someone know how to fix the capacitive button problem..I would greatly appreciate it.

I don't know about the capacitive buttons. As for root, do you care about knox?
If yes, then best way (and only clean way I know of) is to root 4.3 with any knox safe method, and use the Mobile Odin method mentioned in another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51627463&postcount=67).
If you dont care about knox then you can do anything, i.e. follow the above steps or OTA to 4.4 and use Chainfire's auto root method.
I need everything to stay intact... I already rooted, just want to make it back to stock for warranty. N want to see if updating firmware might fix pb

Follow the instructions in the link I gave. I followed it and it worked awesome. It'll keep knox intact for warranty purposes and give you rooted kitkat (stock).
