[Q] unrooting - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Just to clarify, once I have the stock firmware, how exactly would I use that, along with odin to unroot my galaxy note 3? (tmobile SM-N900T) I just want to make sure I know how, for when 2.4 comes out

Not sure what you're trying to accomplish, once you Odin back to stock you lose root, but either way your device is already flagged as modified. You'll still be able to flash to 4.4 (I'm assuming that's what you meant).. If you keep root, just not OTA via carrier notice. As a matter of fact, 4.4 will probably be available here on XDA , long before it's pushed out by the provider

4.3 clean root on SGH-I317M on Build JSS15J.I317MVLUCMK5

Ok so this is what i did to root my Telus Device SGH-I317M on Build JSS15J.I317MVLUCMK5
I started with a factory reset from backup and reset dont think this is necessary but nice to do with a clean isntall
once that was done i turned off the device and booted into download mode volume down + home + power
opened ODIN 3.09 and added the CF-Auto-Root-t0ltecan-t0ltevl-sghi317m.tar.md5 to the AP section. then clicked start. once done the device restarts back to normal and the root is applied, but during that KNOX detects it and disables it from working.
plug device into computer and ran Kies 3 and ran a firmware upgrade and initialization. took about 20 minutes.
once phone started you will notice superSU is no longer on your system.
TEST FOR THIS PART... PROBABLY not necessary but i did this and this is what happened.
run KNOX and allow it to Install. once done it will ask you to add passwords and at the end it will say it is not compatible with this device or whatever. KNOX has now terminated its warrenty or what not and will not install.
i did not have an update for superSU on Google Play but i DID have the update on Aptoide. so i updated it and ran the program.
program told me it was no longer on the device saying the libraries or whatever were not there.
so i ran Odin and ran AP again and ran it once it was done phone started and no messages and superSU worked.
because now that you factory loaded from kies for some reason it knows you attempted it the first time that now knox will not work
not quite sure how that works or if its even relevant. but when you see in the download mode it says warrenty void 1 or whatever and the knox crap its all disabled now i am guessing because i got no problems or messages once i finished it all
so step by step.
STEP 1. put in download mode and run odin 3.09 load AP and make sure Auto reboot and F. reset time are the only ones with check marks and then click START.
STEP 2 Once device reboots you will get errors and knox blocking it. this is normal. (for me it was anyway) open Kies 3 and do firmware upgrade and initialization. depending on internet connection this could take some time. you may be able to Odin the firmware but i chose kies 3
STEP 3 Once system restore from Kies is done open KNOX and install it. should fail and say not available for this device. (happened on my device)
STEP 4 either run aptoide and download the update for superSU tho you dont see it, its still there. open that will tell you to re do the root process again.
STEP 5 run odin 3.09 load AP and make sure Auto reboot and F. Reset Time are the only ones with check marks and then click start.
STEP 6 once device has started download root checker from the google play store and test. should say success.
i did at first after i root checked it with success i rebooted the device and started it up then opened superSU asked me to download binaries i pressed back by accident and then it said knox detected would you like to try and disable knox. select yes. and then success
you are rooted and no more notifications.
THESE ARE THE STEPS THAT I DID TO ROOT MY DEVICE FOR THE SPECIFIC MODEL AND BUILD so results may differ from others. so far its worked on my SGH-I317M TELUS phone running virgin mobile sim
Hope everyone else has as much success as i did.
all files compressed into one.

If you just want a custom rom all you really need to do is update the bootloader or already be on 4.3 official then just boot into download mode use Odin 1.85 to flash twrp recovery wipe your data and flash the rom you want. Or just update to official use chain fire auto root and just update supersu it will disable Knox.

Thanks but I am not that keen on getting the official rom. For one I hate using kies, it was a mess when i tried to update with my old s3, so I have not used it at all. Plus I have tons of stuff on my current phone that i would need to restore after things are done.
Also, i'd rather not having to deal with knox if i can, even though the phone is out of first yr warranty period. I have always used custom roms on my note 2 and s3 so i will leave at that for now.

I tried that method didn't work for me. I couldn't update or use superSU maybe the root I used didn't fully install but they way I wrote down to doing it on stock room works every time.
I haven't tinkered with any custom roms yet either, not sure what's the benefit of them

The main reason to use a custom rom is to remove all carrier related stuff on your phone. It also let's you add different mods and features you want. For example you can use the note 3 roms. Pretty much turn your phone into a note 3.

unless there is a way to get all that on the 4.3 note 2 firmware that would be awesome as well
i317m - no mobile data with CF-auto root zip file in odin
I guess I have done enough reading to be dangerous. I wish there was a comprehensive glossary for this stuff.
Anyhow - through ODIN I have flashed CF-Auto-Root-t0ltecan-t0ltevl-sghi317m - and today I have no mobile data.
Where could I find an image to go back to the original phone and start again? It is an i317m Note2 from Bell
Thanks

Basically - I have no mobile data (it seems) How can I diagnose my problem. Is there something to show signal strength. Or is there a log file showing whether my modem is handshaking or what can a guy do?

[Q] blocking the OTA KNOX 4.3 update ( i.e. never ever want KNOX)

What are my options for blocking the OTA update?
I need to make sure I don't wake up one morning and find my phone updated with KNOX. I read that it can be automatically installed on stock roms, even without user consent. I have CWM recovery and rooted at ver.4.2.2 and have frozen the following apps using Ti Backup:
FWUpgrade 1.2.0
LocalFOTA v2
Software update
Is there anything else I should be doing to prevent this update?
Also would flashing one of the custom roms based on TouchWiz 4.3 flash the KNOX boot-loader?
Seriously if this post sale bait and switch boot-loader lock-down cannot be averted this will, in all likelihood, be my last Samsung device. I could understand if my employer wanted a KNOX supported device on his network and I consented to allowing this to happen to my phone for the privilege of using my phone for my job, but forcing KNOX on us after the sale is down right criminal.
Edit (2013-12-10): This thread further describes how to prevent KNOX:

Today at this hardware level there is just the s4 and nexus 5, but no external sd card slot make the nexus a total non-starter. So yes today I am a bit stuck with Sammy... but if they keep taking steps toward making their products like the iSandbox line, I would hope an enterprising company would produce a product that (re-) enpowered the user.
Rant:
It's not just the knox fisasco... having bluetooth tether yanked really pissed me off. Guess who has bluetooth tether on stock.... verizon ( but I really loath what they have done to all their devices bootloaders... so much so that I returned both my black friday verizon 32gb s4's for a pair of 16gb tmobile's ) Don't even talk about mobile hotspot... I get almost twice the battery life using bluetooth tether.

That is indeed my understanding. The only thing that's changed with the new bootloader is that when you flash a rom, it trips the Knox counter and invalidates your warranty. If you don't care about warranty, you can root it, install a custom recovery and keep flashing roms as before.
I myself am on stock 4.3 and have no intention to mod my device just yet. So you might want to get a few more opinions before you take the plunge.

There is also the issue of not being able to downgrade your modem as discussed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2558847
I've read that the new modem doesn't play nice with the old roms. As I understand the state of things currently once you upgrade one can't downgrade? ( not in any attempt to remove KNOX flag, but just to be able to use the pre 4.3 roms ).

I'm on Ota (kies) 4.3 with cwm custom recovery and rooted via cf-autoroot. Knox is part of the rom but isn't installed - you have to run the app and let it install.
So far no issues other than the allsharecast dongle not working. This is probably because triangle away doesn't work right in 4.3

Hello @serein1,
Are you 100% sure you completed the saferoot instructions completely? Also, a good way to test if you do have root is to download Root Checker Also from mine and my friends experience with samsung repairs, they don't care about having a rooted status or a custom status if it has to do with hardware. But, Not everyone is the same at samsung ... Also check if Knox is voided because safe root does not trigger Knox to be disabled. Lastly, if you don't want to risk not getting it repaired I would flash Stock rom using Odin.
Downgrade to stock 4.1.2 rom, then root it, use triangle away to reset the counter and then do the compete unroot.
Done.

eally just need a link for a stock rom 4.1.2 and the instructions to make it work with odin.
I mean where to put the files in pda phone and so on.
Thanks everyone
I have tried the instructions as mentioned for the safe root
it gives error unsupported device and then goes away
there's another thing I have noticed the safe root command prompt window on the top says S4 and not note 2 however I have downloaded the safe root from the note 2 forum section
The knox counter is already set to 1 now DAMN
I also would like to go back to the 4.1.2 and while downgrading using the ODIN it says unsupported on the phone screen and doesn't flashes the phone
How do we downgrade from the 4.3 that has the knox to the 4.1.2
thanks again

Try to find some firmware on sammobile site or here on xda (just search for the word stock).
After that You put the phone into a download mode, connect it to a PC and choose the downloaded (extracted) firmware under the pda/ap button.

Now just get the flash counter back to 0 again.

[Q] Need help upgrading Android if possible?

I rooted my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 GT-N5110 wifi version using CF-Auto-Root. It is running Android 4.1.2 and now that the new tablets have come out ie; 8.4" tab, note 12.1 2014 edition etc., I don't think there's much hope for Samsung to update the OS as the device has been out for approx 14 months.
So anyway I rooted because I was low on memory and wanted to move some apps to ext SD card. However being on Android 4.1.2 I believe is the reason I still cannot do this. Any apps I have downloaded from the Play Store won't let me do this. I have read online that this feature was added in higher version of Android. From what I have read 4.3 is more stable than 4.2.2.
Wondering if there is any way I can get Android 4.3 on my device? I have read a bit about 'cyanogenMod's' and 'clockwork recovery' and don't really understand much about it yet.
Is there any way for me to re-root my device so that I will have Android 4.3? If so, would I have to un-root it first before rooting again?
This Note 8 tablet is the second device I rooted. The first was my S3 phone which was great after rooting as I just wanted to freeze the bloatware using Titanium Backup Pro which I did. Love it. But with the Note 8, rooting it has not achieved what I need so far. Hoping someone can help this almost newbie!!
There is no 4.3 for our device the only thing that is out there right now is the ported version of 4.3 made available to us by @ykkfive found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2642647 there are some rumors that we might get Kit-Kat 4.4 so IMHO I think they are going to bypass 4.3 all together for our device, but again those are just rumors.
As far as custom recovery goes I would suggest you look into Philz recovery made available to us by @Phil3759 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201860
Hoping this help

Unroot and push 4.2.2, all your issues will be solved. I tried custom ROMs and found stock 4.2.2 works just fine, without Google Music Player update or just disable it all together.
PS, use saferoot.zip next time... it does not require flashing, and will not break your device from using OTA or Kies for firmware updates.
Now you need to run triangle away to clear your flash counter before removing root.
Two things:
One: the current version is 4.2.2. If you are running 4.1, there is an update available
Two: Samsung stated that there will be an update to KK for our devices.
There has never been a 4.3 ROM for our device, nor is there a compelling reason to have one. Plenty of KK ROMs in the development section though, although I really didn't care for any of the ones I tried. The only way I know to root this device is with CF Autoroot, and that is also what worked for me. I am not sure why it did not work for you. Once you root, you can do everything you've been able to do with your S3.
Thank you for the helpful replies.
@gooberdude I guess the first thing I need to do from what you're saying is use Triangle Away to reset the counter. Then to unroot. No clue how to do this, but I guess I've got a lot of searching to do to find out. Any help would be appreciated!
You mention to 'push' 4.2.2. It is not available either over the air or through kies. So, how do I do this? Again help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Yes use triangle away to reset counter then if you not already have done so download and install Odin 1.85
Next search the stock firmware for your model here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
Get your Note into download mode ( Press and keep holding the Volume Down, Home and Power ) and connect it to your PC, Odin should "see" it the first slot under ID:slot should turn a different color if so you are in good shape, now put the Firmware you download from above mentioned site click PDA*button and select the downloaded .tar.md5 file, Important: In Odin, make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time options are enabled. Also, ensure that the Re-partition checkbox is not enabled and hit start and let Odin do the rest and you should be up and running in no time
Hoping this helps

You can also check here http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-N5110 look for XAR "cellular south" from what i read this is the "US-version" or look for BTU "United Kingdom" both should work as long as it is for GT-N5110 you should be good.
As far as Odin goes I have used 1.85 and that worked for me really well, if 3.07 worked for you then that is great and I would stick with that
Hoping this helps

So I've been doing a lot of searching and reading online before doing more to my Note 8 tablet. Cause if I knew then what I know now I wouldn't have rooted it.
Anyway, I have seen a YouTube video of how you can unroot your phone (tablet - any Android) using Super SU. I assume I should use Triange Away first then do that. Then there are 3 files I need to remove: /system/bin/su + /system/xbin/su + /system/app/Superuser.apk.
Then of course remove any apps that I installed that required root access like Greenify, Busybox Free, Multiwindow Manager etc.
So if I do that it sounds like I will be back to a warrantied fully stock Note 8.
SO MY QUESTION THEN: How do I upgrade my firmware to 4.2.2 and if I do will I be voiding the 2 year warranty I have bearing in mind I will have unrooted my device?

If you download a stock Rom and flash it with Odin from one of those sites I mentioned before you will be on 4.2.2 it will flash a full stock firmware, and therefore you do not have to "upgrade" your firmware, so in short if you use triangle away and flash a stock Rom your Note will be like the day you first broke the seal and took it out of the box.
Now if you decide to get 4.1.2 then you could "update" to 4.2.2 by going to... settings...about device...software update...update and let the device look for an update and let it install.
Hoping this helps

Wha??? If you have stock ROM and it is rooted... run trianagle away, and have it clear out your counter. Once cleared you can verify then do a factory reset after you boot to home screen. Once reset, you will have a clean like new OS load. then you can push an OTA with settings, about device, check for updates. If you flashed
Of course you have to USE triangle away but isn't that what I already had stated above when I said go the Odin way and flash a stock Rom?
And also generally speaking, a factory reset does not always erase data stored on the internal or external sd card. This data must be manually erased by formatting the sd cards.

I rooted using CF-Auto-Root so that I could use apps like app2sd to free up some space on the internal 16gb (9 or 10 gb available to user) by moving apps to ext sd card. I did not add a mod or recovery or anything else after rooting. I am in Canada and there are no OTA updates available for the Note 8. So I am stuck at Android 4.1.2. After I rooted I realized that what I really need is at least Android 4.2.2 in order to move apps to ext SD card.
So, ideally, what I'd really like to do is unroot my device after using Triange Away, delete the 3 leftover files I mentioned earlier, and then delete any apps that require root. I have a warranty until February 2016 and I'd really like to be able to use it if necessary as I've heard that some have had battery issues after several months use. ANYWAY, is there any way I can stay unrooted, and yet upgrade the OS to 4.2.2 (which does not seem to be available here in Canadan-I guess we're stuck at 4.1.2. Even if 4.4.2 KitKat becomes available it will not help me with my low storage issue as KitKat stops apps from writing to ext SD Card. SO, I really prefer to have 4.2.2.
I am assuming all the instructions everyone has offered me above all have me remain rooted? Would I be able to remain rooted, upgrade to 4.2.2 then use Triangle Away and unroot?
Sorry for the long winded post, just wanted to clarify a few things.
The ONLY way for you to get 4.2.2 if you are not able to get an O.T.A..... is too USE triangle away as @gooberdude has stated AND donwload and Flash a 4.2.2 Stock Rom with Odin from one of the site that I gave you above, you will NOT be rooted after you flash the Stock Rom and you should not have any warranty issues at all.
Hoping this will clear things up

I know a factory reset will not erase SD storage... As for that, really there should not be any thing there the system needs to operate. So what ever is on SD is not important to the OS.
As for getting root without flashing... Saferoot.zip. I have it installed and never had to use Triangle away. the nice thing about it, is that OTA and Kies will allow firmware updates. So, when updates become available, I'll be able to update.
If the OP would backup the important stuff he needs, and just do a factory reset, he should have a near factory untouched OS. This will allow OTA and Kies to function. Then all he needs to do is set USB debug in developer options and run saferoot.zip from a windows pc or laptop. As an option install rootcloak and substrate apps to truly hide root from apps that may detect it. Once done your rooted device will be just as upgradable as a factory device.

So have you tried flashing already? I have the same problem in Brazil, OTA / Kies never detects an update to 4.1.2... And I don't even rooted or anything that could impact the process.
@gooberdude I like your idea of using safe root but I don't understand what 'flashing' means nor what cloakroom is although I am guessing it's an app? Also what are substrate apps? @fmachado2906 as I said I don't know what flashing means.
Why does Samsung send some countries an update but not others? It's frustrating.

@Festivale26 flashing = downloading the firmware, opening Odin, setting up the firmware there and clicking on Start, not necessarily in this same order =)
By the way I'm tired of waiting, just downloading 4.2.2 and will try later.. I'll let you know how it went.

[Q] Questions on stock 4.3

I've been searching and reading for last couple days and haven't been able to find a definite answer. I'm using note 2 i317 at&t with stock 4.3 out of the box. I've been able to root it and get past Knox successfully. My question is can I install a custom recovery using stock 4.3? I'm wanting to use xposed framework and I want to be able to make a backup and have recovery optons. I've heard it may not be possible on 4.3 due to possible locked bootloader and the Knox thing. Any help is appreciated.
Just flash your custom recovery using Odin...
The Knox bootloader is generation #1...and does not prevent the flashing of custom recoveries or kernel images. .
Edit:...custom recoveries will trip the Knox counter...and void the device warranty. ..
Once you have a custom recovery. ..you can create your full nandroid backup...
Then you'll be able to do anything you want with roms etc....g

Thanks I appreciate it. So if I do happen to get into trouble will I be able to just use my backup to restore things or use Odin to flash back to the stock 4.3 rom?

Not exactly. ..
Once you root...or flash a custom recovery. ..you will trip the Knox counter...(bootloader flag)
Effectively. ..that will void warranty...
However. ..This flag will not effect using your nandroid backup to restore the device if you should need it... (store that backup on your PC for safety)...
But if you don't care about warranty. ..then a revert to stock 4.3 is quite easy...minus the tripped bootloader flag....g

i'm on stock 4.3 with root access... yet ES file manager will not let me copy files to the system/app folder. Root checker says i have root access. terminal emulator shows # when i type su.
when i turn on root explorer in ES file manager - i get test failed. feature can not run on my device. any help?
Dont you need to change to read/write?
I have one more question on the 4.3 boot loader thing. Am I able to flash Roms that are based on an earlier android version like 4.2.2 since I am on official 4.3 boot loader? I was looking at flashing a ported miui v5 ROM but I'm pretty sure its 4.2 based.

when i check the properties of the System/app folder with ES file explorer... it says yes to both readable and writable.
Sry if I seem like I'm thread jacking but just wanted to clarify something. So with the AT&T note 2 on the stock ota 4.3 we can still install a custom recovery and flash custom roms and kernels or does it have to be 4.3 touchwiz based roms? If so can someone tell me the steps to do so?
The only reason I'm asking is I have both an att not 2 and a Verizon both on 4.3 and with the Verizon note 2 I had to use safestrap to flash a custom rom but can't flash kernels (so I'm not really new to flashing and all but new to the att scene and wanted to make sure bc I was told that with a locked bootloader I couldn't flash roms and a custom recovery and don't want to break my phone)
Thanks (also I only had an att note 2 is so I can get 4g lte on straight talk but I like having the note 3 features)
Again thanks for the help as of right now my att note 2 is a paper weight and if I can flash any custom rom on stock 4.3 it'd be great bc at least I wouldn't have wasted my money haha

I have the att note 2 and it came with stock 4.3 and I'm now running ezkat 4.4.2 with agni kernel. So yes you can run roms and kernels. Only thing I'm not 100% sure on is if you can downgrade to 4.2 or 4.1. Here is the link to the room I'm running. It's great and has a lot of note 3 features and some s5 features.

Here is a link that shows you step by step to root(this is how I did it) also you will probably need to do the tutorial at the bottom of the page for the Knox security. http://www.droidviews.com/root-att-galaxy-note-2-sgh-i317-on-android-4-3-ucubmk6-firmware/
And here is recovery I recommend http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2159652

I just used Odin and flashed phils cwm file. You can get it in either a flashable zip or and Odin flashable file. The bootloader not really locked from what I understand it just won't let you replace it with an earlier version. Basically no problems flashing roms and kernels and such. You just have to kill the Knox security deal with super su
