[Q] UnrEVOked Failed to Flash Recovery - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hate to start a new thread. Hopefully I can get enough information across to make this short and solvable.
I just got a Dinc and I've factory rest, installed the "HBOOT" drivers per the unrevoked page methods, and installed unrevoked3. I have not installed anything on my computer such as HTC Sync. USB Debug on, unknown sources checked, tried in both Charge Only and Disk Mode options. Every time the result is "Failed to Flash Recovery Image" when I run the program.
I'm on 2.2 and I'm assuming everything else is the most recent build (says no update avail). If anyone has an idea or an obvious answer on how I can root please do tell.
[[[[SOLVED! PLEASE CLOSE]]]]]

How'd you resolve the issue?

Cant root Desire

Ok Guys heres what I,e got
Firmware ver 2.1-updat 1
Baseband ver 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Kernal ver 2.6.29-b7e82785

Software num 1.19.707.7
Browser ver Webkit3.1
Ok. now I,ve spent probably about 24 hours during the past three days trying to root the thing. made a gold card after about 10 attempts, have tried and tried to root the thing, have tried 3 or 4 different methods, most fail becase either I loose USB connection to the fone when navigating to Bootloader. From there on in she all over rover. Actually I,m not sure I have the right ROM to add to the fone, but I,d really like to get to the point where it asks for the rom. I,ve aged about 10 years since embarking on this venture, and still the thing is as bought. The phone isnt branded, bought it thru ebay from Hong Knog I think, has asian english which aint no fun. Have loaded Morelocal2 on but it still aint nice.
Can someone who has rooted one of these with similar ver software email me whith there secrets please before I go totally insane or really root the thing against a brick wall.
Cheers Guys.
Try the tutorial in my sig (second link). You should have no problems rooting with that.
It provides you with the required downloads for rooting. Just download and flash your ROM of choice in place if the 'rootedupdate.zip' file.
Please state any errors you recieve while attempting root.

I,ve tried your link, now my wife has been helping me, she cant get it to install either, I,ve even got to the stage of watching in Device manager what happens when it goes into Bootloader/recovery mode. the link between the HTC and the computer breaks,SOOOOOOO as I,ve stated before I have a very good understanding on HOW to root the thing, its just that for some reason I cant keep the phone connected thru the USB . I think this is the only prob I have. Something else that also happens is I get a Customer ID failed message half way thru step 1
What ever system I try to use to root this thig thats where I end up.
Wifie is going to try one more time, this time we are going to try the fone with a default startup to look at the disc not the HTC Syn.
Please keep trying to help guys

OK Heres the wifie update,

Now wipe and apply rootupdate.zip from the recovery image menu.

So there we go guys, thats it in a nut shell
Try using the TinyCore method, I had all sorts of issues in Windows but this worked first time...see this post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6710081&postcount=2
obviously download the right Live CD for your bootloader
Also if you are trying to root in windows, make sure you have HTC Sync installed.
Desire root
Yep, I,m using the tiny core app followed the instructions in the link as advised. Still loses connection at bootlader/recovery
When you get back to Bootloader, how long do you wait before trying to run? As I normally leave it 5 or so seconds and then it's fine...if you do it too quick it'll say no device found
Which TinyCore CD did you download? I'm assuming you have HBOOT 0.80 on your device before you started?
Rooting a desire
An answer to your question, I,m using the tcl_r4_desire_hb80 file. when you ask how long are you waiting , I reckon it taks me more than 5 seconds to type in sudo ./step2.sh
I could try it again and wait longer.
Desire a rooted phone
Nope sorry guys, I,ve tried god dam everything, still wont connect afetr step 1 with tcl_r4_desire_hb80.
Somehow I need to be able to force a usb connection.
hey I tried this on Vista and XP, thought XP might be better. is there a stand alone app to force USB drivers when tcl_r4_desire_hb80 boots into termial screen
If you have done step 1, is it possible after failed attempts at getting into the recovery, you have usb bricked it?
Try switching it on normally and see if you have normal usb connectivity, and the sd card mounts and works fine?

I too was thinking that there is a possibility of his device being bricked, especially when receiving errors indicating that the device cannot be found in recovery.
Rooting desire
OK, wondered that myself,
connected phone to PC, sync straight away with fone
reconnected it to pc in disk drive mode and connected, checked in My Computer and the disc drive was there with all my files.
Suppose that means everything there is ok to
OK if it isn't usb bricked then it's got to be a driver issue. My suggestion would be to follow the tutorial in the dev section and use tiny core linux.
Rooting desire
OK guys,,, so heres where I,m at, so far all info gained from you lovely people has been to no avail.
What I,m getting is this
In device manager I am watching what happens when the Desire goes from fastboot to bootloader. In bootloader I get "Android 1.0 with the yellow tiangle indicating it aint set up with drivers. In fastboot I get "My HTC" under Android USB Devices. now in either Bootloader or fastboot I,m only getting one or the other, and as I said, the triangle under "Android 1.0"
Now Ive gone to Android 1.0 and tried to add a driver, seemingly thers not a driver in the world that will work with Android 1.0. All driver in my Sdk dont work. The driver installer asks for a driver but wont except anything trown at it.
First, via your phone, go to Menu > Settings > Applications > Development and ensure the USB Debugging option is selected.
Try a different USB port.
I actually think you need to create a Gold Card even though you have stock rom 1.19.707.7
Try the Gold Card.

I have the exact same issue on win.7 64bit.
Try ignoring the no android 1.0 issue, continue to put your phone into recovery with the volume down and power buttons. Wait about 10 seconds after you see the black screen with red triangle, and then click on recovery windows.bat. Works for me everytime.
Windows takes it's time to see and install devices so it may be that you are trying things too quickly after connecting the usb lead.

Unrevoked 3.21 need Help

Could someone please help.
I am trying to root using the Unrevoked Beta 3.21 to root my phone. I get to the end in Unrevoked and it states "failed to flash recovery image"
This is what I have done:
1. Installed all drivers - Device manager does stat ADB Interface just like the guide states.
2. Installed the Relfash packgage
3. Phone is in "debbuging mode"
4. Charge Only is selected
5. Using Windows xp
One strange thing that I do notice is that when the Unrevoked program tells you to select the Hboot usb on my phone and when I do so it flashes blue or green wording that says "no Image" when it looks like its trying to load an image. Afterwards the phone goes into the reboot phase and then states "Failed to flash recovery image". Help is much appreciated.
drivers
i'd mak esure you have everything else uninstalled, every doubletwist, htc software and drivers get it all off, then reboot install unrevoked drivers, then 3.21
thats what i did last night, and it worked.

Uninstall HTC Sync if you have it installed.
Hey folks thanks for the help you all gave. I finally got it to work last night. What I did was unistalled everything that I had downloaded and started fresh from the beginning of the directions. It was all good after and worked flawless. Now im moving on to see what "root" actually is and how it benefits me.
Thanks,

Desire, unrevoked failed -> unable to reboot when connected to usb

Hello,
I'm having some troubles while trying to root my friend's phone.
I tried using UnRevoked. I used the same method for my own phone and it worked without any issues, so the drivers etc should be installed properly.
During the rooting procedure Unrevoked will reboot the device, but the device got stuck on the HTC loading screen. And just stayed there, nothing happend. Unrevoked screen displayed: "Waiting for device to reboot"
I pulled the battery and rebooted with usb cable still plugged in. But device wouldnt reboot, it got stuck on HTC loading screen again...
I finally pulled the battery again, tried reboot without usb cable, this worked, when I advanced to the second HTC loading screen (the one with 'quietly brillant' subtitle), at which point I quickly plugged the usb cable back in, so maybe Unrevoked would pick up where it was. But I now got the error: "coudln't find misc"
So long story short: Rooting failed, thankfully I can still boot and everything is still there. Rebooting phone with usb plugged in doesn't work. I also sometimes get the "7 vibrates" when trying to boot (not sure what that means, googling this error didn't help me alot though...)
Phone is running android 2.2 btw, is there an (easy) solution to rooting without having to reboot the phone while connected to usb?
Sorry for the lengthy read and thanks in advance everyone!
Grtz!
Are you using ClockworkMod or AmonRA as the recovery image?
Maybe try the one you haven't tried yet?
R.
hi & thanks,
I just tried the default one, so that would be Clockwork recovery.
Which version of amon ra do you suggest?
Although I don't think that would solve the issue, since it just seems that the phone doesnt want to boot up whenever it is connected to USB...
Grtz
I haven't had any problems with RA version 2.0.1, and I think it's the image that Robocik recommended with his RCMixHD ROM.
Just noticed the link in his thread no longer works but it seems to be available on a German forum (Google 'RA recovery 2.0.1' and follow the link to the androidhilfe.de forum - sorry but I'm not permitted to post the link).
There are ways to flash it through fastboot, but it not something I've needed to do.
Good luck!
I just discovered another symptom:
The phone also keeps asking to set the time zone quite often!
Is this normal? The is usually still correct, but it still asks me to set, which I find odd.
I'm pulling the battery on this phone alot, but still I thought there was some kind of internal battery to store this kind of information? Could it be a symptom that there's something wrong with the phone?
The first symptom was never booting when connected to USB.
2nd: Sometimes getting stuck at same bootscreen, even when not connected to USB.
Also shutting down is sometimes difficult, getting stuck at HTC bootscreen again.
3rd: Often asks to set the time.
Edit: It booted succesfully while connected to USB this time... I hate it when there always seems to be an exeption to a problem right after you post it online
Edit2: The time setting problem might be because there's no simcard in the phone?
You need a fully working sd and sim card to root your phone with unrevoked.
For the problem with the time: menu>settings>date & time>uncheck "automatic (use network provided values)".
Thanks, I'll try this that later this evening!

Here you find solutions which maybe also work for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902307
@swimon:
When using linux you do not need to install the modified usb drivers. You only need to this in windows.
Thanks for all the help everyone.
I tried running the unrevoked root procedure again, this time with a working SIM card inserted.
Everything works fine, phone reboots when it should reboot and everything. But it still doesn't work. I get the error "Internal Error: Couldn't find misc" while the phone keeps rebooting over and over...
I noticed though, that I got a lot of notifications by windows "usb device not recognized" "usb device not working properly" etc during the procedure, I cant remember if this happened the when I rooted my first phone... Or could this be a sign that there's something wrong with the drivers?
What now?!
@mattdroid: oh okay, didn't know that.
Okay check list:
Installed modified hboot drivers?
Uninstalled htc sync (and not the drivers)?
Usb debugging enabled (settings>applications>development)?
Set phone's connection type to "only charge" (if you have problems try "storage") and "never ask again" (settings>connect with pc)?
Which pvt version does your friend's desire have (boot into hboot bootloader, first line)?

When connect your phone to your computer (in usb debug mode and on only charge), in the device manager of windows you should be able to find a device like "android phone 1.0". If this is so, the drivers are installed correctly.
Just to be sure, do this procedure again:
1.) Install htc sync (you need this program to install drivers correctly)
2.) Install hboot drivers: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
3.)
a) Disconnect phone from pc
b) Make sure you have the following settings in your phone:
Checked "unknown sources" in settings>applications?
Usb debugging enabled (settings>applications>development)?
Set phone's connection type to "only charge" (if you have problems try "storage") and "never ask again" (settings>connect with pc)?
4.) Reboot phone
5.) Uninstall only htc sync and not the drivers (htc sync driver installer)
6.) Reboot computer (important)
7.) Now start unrevoked (reflash_package.exe) with administrator rights in windows
8.) Connect phone with computer
9.) WAIT ... WAIT .... WAIT until unrevoked says "done"
Thanks for the nice little tutorial!
will try and post results tomorrow!
I have been running unrevoked normally (without administrator rights) this whole time, maybe that has been causing the problem.
Grtz!

Well.. this happend to me.. what i have done was.. i just downloaded older version of unrevoked and it work like a charm..may be you can give it a shot
But I think older versions of unrevoked don't support android 2.2 ?
Going to try MatDroid method now
FFS!
I tried everything from scratch. Like MatDroid described.
Seems like this phone just doesn't want to reboot when it's on USB!!
How long are your supposed to wait when unrevoked displays "waiting for reboot" and the phone is on HTC boot screen?
And what could cause this phone to have so much difficulties powering on and off?
Grtz
edit: first thing unrevoked does is pushing the recovery, later it get's stuck on bootscreen, but doesn't this mean the recovery is already on my phone and I can maybe install it manually?

Sometimes unrevoked cannot do the "final reboot". After 20 minutes without changes, pull the battery and wait 10 minutes. Now put battery in and start phone. If you have the superuser app in your applications, everything is fine. After this, check wether unrevoked flash recovery.

[Q] Evo4g 2.3.3 - rEVOlutionary stuck on "waiting for fastboot"

Hello all,
I've done a LOT of searching/reading, and though I've seen others mention that they hit this problem, either the answers they posted don't apply to me or they didn't post their solution. Thanks in advance for *any* ideas. Here goes.
- Using WinXP (VM on a Mac) with HTC Drivers (HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe) installed.
- I have Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed on the root of the phone.
- No HTC Sync, Antivirus realtime protection turned off.
- Fast boot off (unchecked in Settings->applications)
- USB Debugging ON
- Connected via USB cable with 'charge only'
- I have not done a factory data reset on my phone
I run revolutionary.exe, it asks for my beta key, accepts it. Things seem great until my phone reboots into HBOOT, S-On, then just sits while my windows terminal shows "Waiting for fastboot..." on the last line. Then nothing. I've tried rebooting phone and WinXP, unplugging and replugging, etc. about 10 times.
I'm following androidforums com/evo-4g-all-things-root/395962-rooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html
and trying androidforums com/evo-4g-all-things-root/436047-rooting-gb-amon-ra-v2-3-recovery.html
I get:

Thanks in advance for any help.
Perfect, the quickest way.
Download the attached files and place them on the root of your SD card.
Flash the unrevoked-forever from the temporary recovery menu. That will turn the phone S-OFF.
Then run the PC36IMG file through the bootloader (power off the phone, then volume down +power buttons) and accept the update. That will give you the latest Amon permanent recovery.

Not sure what you are talking about as the method being used is rEVOlutionary... not unrEVOked, so unrevoked forever in not needed.
does the device display "fastboot usb"?
you may have to manually put in in this mode? I haven't done this method for a while but it seems as if it is not recognizing the device while in fastboot...
Thanks, imheroldman. Yes, my phone does say fastboot usb. Just sits there. Tried with two different cables. Plus, it gets past 'waiting for device' and takes the beta key, which tells me it's recognizing the phone over USB, right? The phone is on and in the regular sprint OS when that happens, though. Once it gets to Hboot, nothing.
At this point I'm almost ready to try unrevoked. I thought it didn't work on 2.3.3, though? Should I just do this?
If so, where's a good guide on using unrevoked for and evo 4g with 2.3.3 Hboot 2.16.0001? I'm pretty versed in various areas of technology, but unfortunately I'm new to this android rooting/flashing stuff.
"Flash the unrevoked-forever from the temporary recovery menu" doesn't mean too much to me, and when I try to select recovery from Hboot I get the old red exclamation point.

OK, I figured it out!!!
This should be added to the rooting guide to help users with Macs that want to use a Windows VM. Mods, can you help here?
Basically, the KEY to the whole thing is that for Caroline to see fastboot, is that you have to toggle VirtualBox's USB controller off and then back on... I had to do it twice.
Do this by going to the top menu bar in VirtualBox, selecting Devices->USB Devices->usb, Android [0100]
toggle it once, wait a second, then boom Caroline does her thing and says something about rebooting once Moar
toggle it again, wait a second, then boom it asks if you want to download and install Recovery.
In the Mac via Virtualbox with Ubunu guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199725) it alludes that you need to toggle the USB off and back on, but he tells you how to do it through the OS. You can get root via rEVOlutionary in any Windows version running on VirtualBox (I'd guess) by toggling USB through the VirtualBox top menu.
I really hope this helps others.
Thanks that worked for me!
Can you click my thanks button, bbwarmth? I'd like to start getting a few of those, I did spend a lot of time on this.
Thanks LetsTether, this is a good reference for those who are using a vm. I am on Linux now, but have rooted my phones on a Windows machine so I have never had this issue. Sounds like the adb server needs to be killed and restarted in the VM, something that could be added to the script but maybe not necessary...
So, now what are you plans?
Thanks, Herold,
I just wanted to make sure anyone on a Mac who may already have a Windows VM installed on VirtualBox would have that critical instruction, toggling VirtualBox's USB Device enable/disable when you get to 'waiting for fastboot'.
I have a couple Oracle Linux VMs already installed, and I was hoping to avoid the hassle of installing a new Ubuntu VM, and this allowed me to do that.
I work a lot. Right now I'm enjoying the wifi tethering but I'll probably get into flashing a ROM when I have some spare time. Where can I research killer features that I should be enjoying now?
I am going to be shameless here and say CM 7.2!!!!
You will have more options than you will know what to do with and you will experience what Android has the potential to be, and is. You will notice how much it resembles the stock ICS feel, and this was all in the works well before ICS dropped... You may or may not know but Samsung actually hired Steve Kondik (cyanogen) right before the Galaxy Nexus dropped... I'm not saying directly he had anything to do with ICS but... Im just saying...
Ok rant is over. AOKP is also going to blow your mind! Now both of these builds are based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project) AKA pure Google with custom mods. They are very far from HTC's Sense, that you are used to on your phone now but are similar enough that you will find your way around..
Don't worry, once you start you won't be able to quit for a while until you have a break down and have to enter rehab and settle with something... They call it Flashaholism... Have a read through my blog and see if anything peaks your interest, i have some tutorial's and reviews.

[Q] Trying to get HBOOT drivers installed on Windows 7

Hi
My Win7 disk crashed some time back and I'm trying to get it back to the way it was which, I believe, had hboot and fastboot drivers for my (now rooted) HTC Desire on it. I can't remember everything about how I did it before but now, when I put the phone into HBOOT then connect it to the PC, it installs as "HTC Serial Interface" and I don't seem to get it to become an "Android Bootloader Interface".
Can anyone suggest anything to help?
As I mentioned, I _think_ I had the hboot drivers installed before, but it's always possible I didn't so if I don't need them any more anyway as the phone's already rooted, please let me know.
What I remember from before was using fastboot to install a custom recovery so perhaps that's the case.
Thanks
John

Those are the instructions I was following but those drivers wouldn't install by the "right click on the .inf file and select 'Install'" method so had to be done by attaching the phone. When I attached the phone Windows went off and installed the "HTC Serial Interface" drivers!
However - I had a bright idea; uninstalled the "HTC Serial Interface" driver from device manager, switched off my wireless (because the "skip checking windows update" option when drivers installing doesn't seem to work very well!) and connected the phone again. This time it said it couldn't install the drivers so I went to device manager and followed the instructions again and now have an Android Bootloader Interface.
Overall what I'm trying to do is just play with different ROMs. I'd s-offed etc and loaded teppick74's (or something like that) Gingerbread ROM some time back to give the phone to my daughter but she had some problems with it and now uses an iPhone so I've got it back. I had to use the AmonRA recovery (I think) for that ROM because it used the older format that EXT4 Touch Recovery didn't support so I'm just trying to get back to the state where I can use that and play about more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer
John
