Unrevoked 3.21 need Help - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Could someone please help.
I am trying to root using the Unrevoked Beta 3.21 to root my phone. I get to the end in Unrevoked and it states "failed to flash recovery image"
This is what I have done:
1. Installed all drivers - Device manager does stat ADB Interface just like the guide states.
2. Installed the Relfash packgage
3. Phone is in "debbuging mode"
4. Charge Only is selected
5. Using Windows xp
One strange thing that I do notice is that when the Unrevoked program tells you to select the Hboot usb on my phone and when I do so it flashes blue or green wording that says "no Image" when it looks like its trying to load an image. Afterwards the phone goes into the reboot phase and then states "Failed to flash recovery image". Help is much appreciated.

drivers
i'd mak esure you have everything else uninstalled, every doubletwist, htc software and drivers get it all off, then reboot install unrevoked drivers, then 3.21
thats what i did last night, and it worked.

Uninstall HTC Sync if you have it installed.

Hey folks thanks for the help you all gave. I finally got it to work last night. What I did was unistalled everything that I had downloaded and started fresh from the beginning of the directions. It was all good after and worked flawless. Now im moving on to see what "root" actually is and how it benefits me.
Thanks,

First time rooter :)

Hi, this is my first post so please be easy with me...
I currently have a HTC desire which i've owned for 4/5 months and love it!
i recently updated my desire to froyo 2.2 from the update option on the phone...i'm curently with the network o2 UK.
I bought a 16GB microSD card so that i can install the apps on the microSD card but noticed that not all apps can be moved to the microSD card.
this is causing me problems as i have low memory on my phone now since the Adobe Flash 10.1 update (10mb)
i was discussing this with a friend who has told me to root the phone and forwarded me to this website! (great site by the way!!)
Now i am looking to root the phone but i dont know where to start...
I know i have to hboot my phone in order to install ROMS but can someone explain to me what i should do before hand?
do i need to backup my phone? and how to i do this?
also once backed up and ready to ROOT which ROM is the best rom to use? there are 1000s of ROMS and i dont really know where to start...
if someone could please help me that would be much appreciated
Use this to root:
http://www.unrevoked.com/recovery/
As for which ROM, it's subjective so you (unfortunately) have to do a lot of reading and try some. See what you like and what you don't
cheers...
so this unrevoked will just root my phone so i can install ROMs?
sorry if its a daft question but i'm new to all this and trying to learn

unrEVOked gives you root and a custom image (ClockworkMod).
When you've rooted your phone you can start it in Recovery mode and from there you can install ROMs.
so do i need to backup my phone/contacts before installing unrEVOked?
You can't, so no...once rooted you can then do a backup in Clockwork Mod before flashing a new ROM.
Do some more reading in the Dev forum for more information (read the stickies)
Just to let you know, I'm creating a website where you can find all the ROMs for the HTC Desire and, if it's succesful, for other Android phones too.
i'm trying the hboot but i do not have an option for HBOOT USB PLUG,
i only have;
Fastboot
Recovery
Clear Storage
Simlock
when i do load hboot pc says its found new hardware and brings up the found new hardware wizard :S

... What the hell are you talking about?
In HBOOT, choose Recovery.
Done.
EDIT: Oh, I just got it. You have to install the ADB driver or whatever if you use Windows, while in HBOOT.
If you check the unrEVOked wiki there's a guide for you
If you're trying to use unrEVOked, you just open it and connect your Desire and do NOT touch it until the program says 'Done'
Once done you then just select 'Recovery' as mentioned above

i am following these instructions and it says select HBOOT USB at the menu...
1. Download the unrEVOked modified USB driver and expand it somewhere you will remember.
2. Turn off your phone, then boot it into the HBOOT menu by holding power and volume down.
3. On your phone, you will have to select HBOOT USB at that menu by pressing volume down four times, then power. Wait until the screen flashes through an “SD Checking” message before pressing buttons; otherwise, the phone will ignore keypresses.
4. Connect the phone to your Windows machine with a USB cable and wait for the phone to say HBOOT USB PLUG on screen.
5. Open Device Manager.
6. Click Start, then right click on Computer, then click Properties, then click Device Manager.
7. Under Other devices, you should now see the Android 1.0 device, similar to the picture below.
8. Right click on Android 1.0 and click Update Driver Software. You should then be at the following screen:
9. Click on Browse my computer for driver software.
10. Click on Browse and select the Android USB Driver folder on on your computer, click ok, then click next.
11. You should get a status bar indicating that the driver is installing. If you get any warnings, just click Ok.
12. Your driver should install and your screen will look like below.
13. Click Close and make sure Android Bootloader Interface is listed under Android Phone.

The Hboot USB will display ABOVE your menu selections so just boot into Hboot, and then wait for the green text to flash, then plug in the usb, wait for the text above your selection to chage to Hboot USB PLUG, and go from there
It's cause part of that guide is based on the HTC EVO 4G (which does have HBOOT USB PLUG in the menu). The main guide by unrEVOked does actually say this but people using this slightly wrong version may get confused...
if i want to unroot, i need to backup the rom by root the desire 1st, then go to the recovery mode to backup, right? Is it just unroot by restore it? Do it need to remove or downgrade the Hboot?
If you want to unroot you need to get the RUU your phone came with and flash that, you can't backup a non-rooted ROM
right guys, i've done the hboot part of the root (with help for the replies i got, thanks guys) and now going to root the phone using unrevoked but come across another problem...i have switched on usb debugging and when i did i got another 'found new hardware wizard' and it wants me to install drivers for this.
if i go under device manager its got ADB under other devices and not configured...is this normal? should i proceed with rooting?
EDIT - FIXED!
hi guys,
downloaded the latest unrevoked for windows and opened the .exe but it has been stuck on the same screen for 10 mins...
it says:
Waiting for device. Plug phone in now and enable usb debugging. Make sure HTC sync is *not* installed
Recovery image: ClockworkMod Recovery
any ideas?
EDIT - FIXED!
guys i've rooted the desire now and i really need some help...
i just backed up my data using nandroid via Clockwork mod and it was successful.
I then choose the reboot now option and my phone is in a boot loop.
can anyone help?
EDIT - FIXED BY RESTORING TO THE BACKUP I MADE
SUCCESSFULLY installed Leedroid 2.1a!! nice...
but after much headache and messing around found out i've installed Leedroid that doesn't install apps to SD...i've been told that i need to partition my sd card using linux boot cd which i dont have and aint got a clue how to use... i thought installing apps to sd card could be done by installing ROMs but i guess not so looks like i have been wasting my time as all i really wanted was to install all my apps to the sd card
anyway thanks for the help guys
You can partition the card using the AmonRA custom recovery - it's extremely well documented that this is how A2SD+ works...lesson learnt to research fully before jumping into something you don't understand

[Q] How to recover RECOVERY?

Hi guys!
Today I tried to get the rooted desire with Android 2.2 with unrevoked 3.21
Previosly I updated to 2.29.405.2 SW
When I run the unrevoked it (desire) freezed on "waiting for root" step. Desire freezed in boot progress (white screen with HTC logo on it)
I removed battery and inserted it again. But I cant boot it, desire freezes on the same white screen with HTC logo.
I can HBOOT, but when I go to recovery menu my device goes to reboot and freez.
So it seems that unrevoked spoiled my recovery and I do not know hot to fix it.
Please guide me, the working solution will be donated $20

Radio version: 5.11.05.27.
SPL/hboot version: 0.93.0001.
product: bravo.
mid: pb9920000.
security: on.
build-mode: ship.
Device model is not SAPPHIRE - flash old/new disabled.
This device does not have s-off nor eng hboot.

Thanks!
Flash a stock RUU and try again, you can get 2.29.405.2 from my signature. Remember to use a gold card if you had to in the past
How can I flash the RUU without access to recovery?
You should flash it via fastboot.
Hold the back button and turn on your phone to enter FASTBOOT, then connect your phone to the pc with the usb cable and then run the ruu.

Did it as you said, result is the same
After the successful flash procedure thru RUU device went to reboot and freezed at the same white screen state.
Recovery is still unavailable to get into.
Now I will try to get the logged data thru Android SDK.
This thing is really mess me up =( I'm phoneless.
You, guys, are the one and only hope.
I have installed SDK, but I cant see anything in adb logcat but "waiting for device", thogh my device is conneted via fastboot usb.
Any clue?
I had that same issue, and it turns out it was a problem with the earlier version of clockworkmod (2.5.0.1) that had that issue, where freezing occurred at the HTC splash screen.
Try unrevoked again, with the 2.5.0.7 image here:
http://koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-bravo.img
Make sure you select the image when you start unrevoked.
It might fail a few times (freezing at splash), but if it does, just pull the battery and keep trying....eventually it'll manage to go through.
Good luck =)

Latty, how can I run unrevoked with a desired image if I cant boot the phone to get it recognized by unrevoked?
you have to start the flasher without the phone being connected, then you should be able to select the image (top left of window).

It still is a driver issue.
Start from scratch..
Remove all HTC Drivers
Reboot
DC from internet
Connect phone in two modes-Android, Fastboot
It should get recognized but drivers shouldnt be installed and you should be prompted for driver location. If you arent prompted, get Device Manager, uninstall the driver which recognized the device.
Now install Unrevoked drivers as per guide.
Phone should be recognized..

Ok, thanks will do it now.
But one more question, should it be recognized from hboot usb mode with "Android Bootloader interface" driver, or from fastboot mode?
Cant confirm that without my phone..
But, I believe drivers would recognize it in both..And seperate drivers too..
A small tip..If you have dual boot, try Unrevoked in another OS in which you havent installed HTC. Should work

Faced with problems
1) I uninstalled HTC Drivers.
2) plugged phone and deleted Bootloader interface device then Boot Interface device.
3) rebooted
4) disconnected from internet
5) plugged and powered device and got Bootloader Interface driver installed without a single promt!!! And Boot interface as well.
So I had no chance to manually set the path to the drivers. And unrevoked still doesnt see the device =(
It turns out that I should try another OS???
PS and the key point, should it be recognized in hboot mode or unrevoked only works with booted to OS devices only?
Not really..But that's the easy way out..
Difficult to show you what exactly to delete..
Mostly these are driver clashes..When you uninstall the driver you should tick the option to delete the driver from system.
Try again and you know you've succeeded when it doesnt find any driver installed, and asks you for the location, when you can choose the unrevoked drivers..
Hm, I cant find any options prompting to delete driver from the system... But I will look into more carefully.
ADDED
Found it, trying now.
Tried, was promted to specify the path to the drivers, installed again and with no luck =( Unrevoked doesnt see the device.
I will try it tomorrow on another PC and with another OS.
Thanks for help, I really appreciate this, and I hope we will find a solution.
PS. Is this problem called USB brick?

Desire, unrevoked failed -> unable to reboot when connected to usb

Hello,
I'm having some troubles while trying to root my friend's phone.
I tried using UnRevoked. I used the same method for my own phone and it worked without any issues, so the drivers etc should be installed properly.
During the rooting procedure Unrevoked will reboot the device, but the device got stuck on the HTC loading screen. And just stayed there, nothing happend. Unrevoked screen displayed: "Waiting for device to reboot"
I pulled the battery and rebooted with usb cable still plugged in. But device wouldnt reboot, it got stuck on HTC loading screen again...
I finally pulled the battery again, tried reboot without usb cable, this worked, when I advanced to the second HTC loading screen (the one with 'quietly brillant' subtitle), at which point I quickly plugged the usb cable back in, so maybe Unrevoked would pick up where it was. But I now got the error: "coudln't find misc"
So long story short: Rooting failed, thankfully I can still boot and everything is still there. Rebooting phone with usb plugged in doesn't work. I also sometimes get the "7 vibrates" when trying to boot (not sure what that means, googling this error didn't help me alot though...)
Phone is running android 2.2 btw, is there an (easy) solution to rooting without having to reboot the phone while connected to usb?
Sorry for the lengthy read and thanks in advance everyone!
Grtz!
Are you using ClockworkMod or AmonRA as the recovery image?
Maybe try the one you haven't tried yet?
R.
hi & thanks,
I just tried the default one, so that would be Clockwork recovery.
Which version of amon ra do you suggest?
Although I don't think that would solve the issue, since it just seems that the phone doesnt want to boot up whenever it is connected to USB...
Grtz
I haven't had any problems with RA version 2.0.1, and I think it's the image that Robocik recommended with his RCMixHD ROM.
Just noticed the link in his thread no longer works but it seems to be available on a German forum (Google 'RA recovery 2.0.1' and follow the link to the androidhilfe.de forum - sorry but I'm not permitted to post the link).
There are ways to flash it through fastboot, but it not something I've needed to do.
Good luck!
I just discovered another symptom:
The phone also keeps asking to set the time zone quite often!
Is this normal? The is usually still correct, but it still asks me to set, which I find odd.
I'm pulling the battery on this phone alot, but still I thought there was some kind of internal battery to store this kind of information? Could it be a symptom that there's something wrong with the phone?
The first symptom was never booting when connected to USB.
2nd: Sometimes getting stuck at same bootscreen, even when not connected to USB.
Also shutting down is sometimes difficult, getting stuck at HTC bootscreen again.
3rd: Often asks to set the time.
Edit: It booted succesfully while connected to USB this time... I hate it when there always seems to be an exeption to a problem right after you post it online
Edit2: The time setting problem might be because there's no simcard in the phone?
You need a fully working sd and sim card to root your phone with unrevoked.
For the problem with the time: menu>settings>date & time>uncheck "automatic (use network provided values)".
Thanks, I'll try this that later this evening!

Here you find solutions which maybe also work for you:

@swimon:
When using linux you do not need to install the modified usb drivers. You only need to this in windows.
Thanks for all the help everyone.
I tried running the unrevoked root procedure again, this time with a working SIM card inserted.
Everything works fine, phone reboots when it should reboot and everything. But it still doesn't work. I get the error "Internal Error: Couldn't find misc" while the phone keeps rebooting over and over...
I noticed though, that I got a lot of notifications by windows "usb device not recognized" "usb device not working properly" etc during the procedure, I cant remember if this happened the when I rooted my first phone... Or could this be a sign that there's something wrong with the drivers?
What now?!
@mattdroid: oh okay, didn't know that.
Okay check list:
Installed modified hboot drivers?
Uninstalled htc sync (and not the drivers)?
Usb debugging enabled (settings>applications>development)?
Set phone's connection type to "only charge" (if you have problems try "storage") and "never ask again" (settings>connect with pc)?
Which pvt version does your friend's desire have (boot into hboot bootloader, first line)?

When connect your phone to your computer (in usb debug mode and on only charge), in the device manager of windows you should be able to find a device like "android phone 1.0". If this is so, the drivers are installed correctly.
Just to be sure, do this procedure again:
1.) Install htc sync (you need this program to install drivers correctly)
2.) Install hboot drivers: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
3.)
a) Disconnect phone from pc
b) Make sure you have the following settings in your phone:
Checked "unknown sources" in settings>applications?
Usb debugging enabled (settings>applications>development)?
Set phone's connection type to "only charge" (if you have problems try "storage") and "never ask again" (settings>connect with pc)?
4.) Reboot phone
5.) Uninstall only htc sync and not the drivers (htc sync driver installer)
6.) Reboot computer (important)
7.) Now start unrevoked (reflash_package.exe) with administrator rights in windows
8.) Connect phone with computer
9.) WAIT ... WAIT .... WAIT until unrevoked says "done"
Thanks for the nice little tutorial!
will try and post results tomorrow!
I have been running unrevoked normally (without administrator rights) this whole time, maybe that has been causing the problem.

I tried everything from scratch. Like MatDroid described.
Seems like this phone just doesn't want to reboot when it's on USB!!
How long are your supposed to wait when unrevoked displays "waiting for reboot" and the phone is on HTC boot screen?
And what could cause this phone to have so much difficulties powering on and off?
Grtz
edit: first thing unrevoked does is pushing the recovery, later it get's stuck on bootscreen, but doesn't this mean the recovery is already on my phone and I can maybe install it manually?

Sometimes unrevoked cannot do the "final reboot". After 20 minutes without changes, pull the battery and wait 10 minutes. Now put battery in and start phone. If you have the superuser app in your applications, everything is fine. After this, check wether unrevoked flash recovery.

[Q] wildfire cannot downgrade to create s-off

Hello hoping someone can help, I'm a noob have not had much success in rooting yet...
Have a wildfire (Australian Telstra 3G)
Trying to downgrade firmware from HBOOT 1.01.0002 to 1.010001 so i can get s-off.
I'm following the instructions posted in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132028
I've downloaded htc drivers (and uninstalled htc sync)as per instructions
Also loaded android drivers via device manager (screen dump attatched)
I can "talk" to my SD card OK with windows explorer but i don't think I am "talking to my phone or card via adb and the command prompt"
Got the full SDK package installed.
All the obvious things.. Andrtoid debugging enabled / Charge only
So When I attempt to run Step 1 bat I get the following error message:adb server is out of date..killing..*daemon server started successfully... error device not found..(screen dump attatched)
also i tried to make a "goldcard" and extract the serial no of the sd card on the phone. . same deal.. as soon as i get into adb ....error. device not found
note i am using windows 7.
my theory is that i'm don't have a propper usb link when i go into the dos cammand prompt/adb but i have loaded the drivers. I think this is happening when i try to root other phones also (eg zte blade)
can anyone help me. be kind to me I'm a noob...I've attatched three relevant screen dumps

you might want to have a look at this alternative thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19746165

Thanks eventcom, but I've followed that link and numrerous others and they all follow the same theme.
here is the problem as I see it...
1/I have installed the android driver when in hboot and it works ok as per attatched image
2/ I have installed htc_sync_setup 3.2.20.exe which is the latest driver availiable from the htc website.I then uninstall HTC sync, which leaves HTC driver installer & HTC BMP USB driver remaining as installed ( as per instructions)
3/ I have uninstalled any other USB programs which might conflict including Itunes and ascociated garbage (no i didn't put it there my kids did!).
USB debugging is turned on & when i plug in USB i go charge only (as per instructions)
Here's a hint...
When I execute an adb commandwithin command prompt eg [adb devices] i get no devices. When I issue a adb copy command I get the result "device not found" I'm know i'm going nowhere on this until I can get device to properly talk via adb and this is the assistance that i am seeking
further info.
I've tried this procedure on another (winxp) machine with same results.
Ive tried this procedure on another wildfire "s" (that is already rooted) same results
I've temporarily disabled the AVG 2012 virus protection & firewall.
As well as being in the directory that the file adb.exe exists I have also installed SDK so adb appears to run in any directory (please explain ?)
If i plug in usb and go "mount sd card" I can access the sd card on the phone viawindows explorer . in my mind this tells me that I have correct usb driver working.
I've tried a different usb cable AND a different phone
before I uninstalled htc sync i tried it out. it doesn't work and the phone won't sync up to this program ( it rarely works this program, tried it on numerous pc with different htc devices and more often than not it doesn't work)
I'm hoping that someone who is experienced in adb can help me get the phone talking with my pc, keeping in mind that I've done almost everything that I can think of to get my phone to "talk: via usb cable and issue commands. If I can't get my phone to communicate via adb then there is no way I can get past step one
please help me

i shall do my very best
ok so what system are you currently running? (win7,vista,xp ect)
are you using the stock usb cable that came with the phone?
when you connect the device to the pc with usb debugging turned on do you get the usb debugging notification in your status bar on the phone?
when you plug your device into the pc with debugging enabled what does your device manager recognize it as? mine shows up as attached...
did your antivirus flag up when you were installing the skd or downloading the adb.exe?
Success with debranding but problems with Revolutionary recovery
Thank you heavy_metal_man.
I finally solved the USB driver issue. I ended up completely uninstalling HTC driver installer & HTC BMP USB driver. I then installed HTCDriver3.00.007.exe as a stand alone only. Finally I got it to recognise in device manager.
Important lesson learned. Installing the latest HTC driver off the website which is htc_sync_setup_3.2.20 (which installs 3 modules HTC Sync, HTC driver installer & HTC BMP USB driver) then uninstalling HTC sync did not work for me...I now just have HTC driver installer only.
I asked to install clockwork mod during the revolutionary process, but I suspect it didn't work
Anyway I have now succesfully debranded and "sort of" have root. my Hboot screen now looks like this...
-Revolutionary-
BUZZ PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.01.1002
MICROP -0622
TOUCH PANEL - ATMEL224_16ab

Problem is when I go into recovery I get the "revolutionary CWM V4.0.1.4" Menu... So far so good.however When I select any item EG bacup & restore, intead of going to the next level menu it just goes to a revolutionary screen with no menu and just hangs. pressing the power button takes me back a level but the vol+ vol- buttons do nothing as there is no menu to select from.
So i can't flash with this current screen. the only way I can get out of it is to remove the battery as the reboot & power off menu items do not work.
.
I have tried re-running the revolutionary Exe file again. It prompts me if i would liketo install CWM and I say yes . It says it's done and takes me into Fastboot USB where I can reboot. but CWM ( The wierd revolutionary model) DOES not work like the CWM that i am accustomed to...
So i STILL can't flash CM7...but I'm getting closer...

That's ok , power is meant to do that, its the back button you need to use the trackball to select stuff also if I remember correctly that recovery has an issue where it will not charge the phone when it is turned off, so I would update that asap I shall give you a link when I'm out of bed, but for the mean time, backup, wipe everything and install cm7+ gapps
ok here is the most up tp date cwm recovery for the buzz as far as i know. and here is the thread it came from something to note, when you jump up tp gingerbread the type of recovery changes as well, so, the new one will not flash sense roms unless the rom has been designed for the new edify type recovery. not sure how many support this though. also the new recovery will NOT flash radios. it does not play well with others but you can always downgrade your recovery temporarily if you need to, or use the rom manager app (which ic an app interface for the recovery) to flash what you need

Success at last
Thanks Heavy_metal_man
Success I now have CM 7.2.0- buzz. I also installed google apps ok.
I guess I shouldv'e read the instructions on flashing a bit closer. I've also got a wildfire "s" as well and it uses the power button to enter so I suppose I just assumed...Truth is that I've only just got this phone last week and I didn't even realise that it had a trackball button ...
This is my first ever root/flash that I have done and I have learned alot from the experience. I specifically got this phone ($10 on ebay) so I coul;d learn to do this without the risk of damaging my own phone. This phone had "issues" when I bought it which is why i got it so cheap. now I have upgraded to CM7 it the issues (eg wireless hotspot would not remain on) have gone.
Soon I hope to have the experience and courage to flash my own phone and my kids phones.
Thanks to H_M_M and all of the XDA forum for helping me out.

[Q] Trying to get HBOOT drivers installed on Windows 7

Hi
My Win7 disk crashed some time back and I'm trying to get it back to the way it was which, I believe, had hboot and fastboot drivers for my (now rooted) HTC Desire on it. I can't remember everything about how I did it before but now, when I put the phone into HBOOT then connect it to the PC, it installs as "HTC Serial Interface" and I don't seem to get it to become an "Android Bootloader Interface".
Can anyone suggest anything to help?
As I mentioned, I _think_ I had the hboot drivers installed before, but it's always possible I didn't so if I don't need them any more anyway as the phone's already rooted, please let me know.
What I remember from before was using fastboot to install a custom recovery so perhaps that's the case.
Thanks
John

Those are the instructions I was following but those drivers wouldn't install by the "right click on the .inf file and select 'Install'" method so had to be done by attaching the phone. When I attached the phone Windows went off and installed the "HTC Serial Interface" drivers!
However - I had a bright idea; uninstalled the "HTC Serial Interface" driver from device manager, switched off my wireless (because the "skip checking windows update" option when drivers installing doesn't seem to work very well!) and connected the phone again. This time it said it couldn't install the drivers so I went to device manager and followed the instructions again and now have an Android Bootloader Interface.
Overall what I'm trying to do is just play with different ROMs. I'd s-offed etc and loaded teppick74's (or something like that) Gingerbread ROM some time back to give the phone to my daughter but she had some problems with it and now uses an iPhone so I've got it back. I had to use the AmonRA recovery (I think) for that ROM because it used the older format that EXT4 Touch Recovery didn't support so I'm just trying to get back to the state where I can use that and play about more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer
John
