Laptop Dock - Atrix 4G Accessories

So what all can you actually do with it? Besides from using the Firefox browser, what all can you do?
I was planning on picking one up and using my phone as a netbook while on the campus; being able to have a phone then just switch to the laptop in class to take notes is a very appealing idea.
Are there other programs built for the dock? If not, would I have to use a document application on the phone and then just blow that up full screen?
Thanks in advance.

Atrix laptop dock review

Heres a little review for you guys.
http://www.mattfacts.dangdeals.com/2011/03/atrix-laptop-dock-review/
Nice quick review. I had a salesman fire one up at Frys with my Atrix. I'm a touch typist and found the keyboard to be very adequate. The touchpad is pretty large but my biggest complaint is the touchpad didn't have a slide scrollbar for webpage reading.
The only way I can imagine leaving my laptop at home is if Webtop has a RDP client so that I can remote into my laptop (in case I need to) and if I can get VPN to work on my phone.
$400 is just too much for what use I'd get out of it. However, I'd be a taker if the price were in the 200's.

I also tried the touchpad on the laptop dock and found out that if you double tap and hold on the second tap you can scroll up and down that way.
Maybe once we get Webtop OS hacked up a little bit we can put zones on the touchpad. If anyone has any questions about the Laptop dock post them up and i'll answer them.

This has been done, and it is awesome. It was the one feature really missing for me to be able to replace my laptop, and now we have it working

Wow! Great news. I just checked the dev thread and read about the RDP clients working. Nice. This webtop may mature into something useful yet.
Are you listening Moto? Free up the Atrix a bit.

Webtop for Nexus

Is there anyway you can get the webtop on the Nexus?
I'm torn between the RAZR and Nexus for my upgrade
If nexus can get Webtop then that's an easy win
Wouldn't count on it.
It won't work since the Nexus does not have a mini hdmi port.
It would probably be much easier to build something like webtop from the ground up than port it. In either highly unlikely youll see either.
I invented cyberspace. You're trespassing.
HDMI on Nexus
Just a thought all, the Samsung Infuse comes with a Mini USB adapter/connector that outputs to HDMI. Whether or not this could aid in Webtop development for the Nexus I'm not sure. Just a thought! but also agree this may be a lost cause!
Webtop
Hello,
A little birdy told me wait..wait...wait
Also, the Galaxy Nexus has an MHL port, which is a combo of USB-on-the-go, HDMI, and USB charging. You can get a USB/HDMI -> MHL cord for all MHL phones.
is there someone who tried the hdmi functionality?
In any case webtop like will not be possible since you can connect both hdmi and mouse on the same port
You can create something close. Simply get the MHL cable everyone is talking about, a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, connect it all to the nexus and you have one giant tablet-like interface =) Not really too portable since you can't carry around an LCD screen though, lol.

More like netbook+phone. See Atrix, Bionic, etc. Although it's more acceptable than optimal, Moto has a large head start on this type of solution.
For tablet+phone, Asus may have an interesting entry in 1H2012.
I came across Airdroid if your connected to a Network. This is Pretty awsome. I just like texting with a keyboard. It runs in your desktop Browser

To be honest, the only thing I like about the Razr is SmartApps, the Design of the phone, and moto always does a good job of media sharing ala DLNA.
The software and screen resolution alone make the galaxy nexus better. Updates straight from google and the newest O.S. make it better. I'm sick and tired of manufacturers trying to reskin android and delaying updates to "make sure it's compatible with their phones".
With that said, the closest thing you can do, right now, would be to get the MHL adapter. Or use something like airdroid.

Airdroid isn't related with webtop.
Webtop is good when you haven't got a computer, in this case you can use a monitor and your phone as a computer.
With AirDroid you need a computer to access the phone, pretty useless imho.
Some interesting reads:
This talks about how the MHL technology can be used to hook the Nexus up to an HDMI TV. The main problem is not being able to charge the phone while using it, unless you have a newer MHL supporting phone.
http://www.talkandroid.com/89887-galaxy-nexus-desktop-better-than-motorola-webtop/#.T24bZzEV0QQ
Which made me think, someone out there could very easily create a "go between" that would hook up to the USB of the phone, a charger, and the HDMI of the TV... and I was right!
http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters...F380/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1332616212&sr=8-8
I'm going to be playing with this stuff a bit more after that adapter comes in the mail...
The Nexus can output to HDMI. All you need is a program to alter output vs a straight mirror.
What most people do now, is lower their DPI to 190 and use a bluetooth mouse/keyboard.
If someone were to build a program to alter the output, like a full screen launcher with a faux status bar, etc... you could also use the touchscreen as a mousepad. But honestly a Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse is best so you can put the phone near the TV/Monitor and you can be across the room.
I did this with my G2x (which had a dedicated HDMI port) and not only used a keyboard/mouse but also my PS3 gamepad for games.

Ever try to pair up your bluetooth keyboard to your Epic 4G Touch? (It's Awesome!)

Was just reading a post on gizmodo about best wireless keyboards link here... and finally found good use to my lenovo bluetooth keyboard sitting in the closet... it paired up with my phone absolutely no problem, now I can take notes and type like never before...
Take that, tiny blackberry keyboard.
Done it with a Logitech Android Bluetooth keyboard and a Thermaltake Bluetooth mouse. Awaiting arrival of my MHL adapter so I can hook up to a spare monitor.
going to buy a asus, transformer prime for that!

I'm also tempted by this concept. I think there would be a transition period where I moved all of my media and everyday use to my phone (with a keyboard and mouse and full size monitor)...and I bet it would be rapid and I'd only keep my PC for the only thing anyone uses PCs for anymore: Content production.
The only time I *need* a PC is for work stuff: Photoshop, Vegas, excel. Also Audition and a few other pro audio apps out of work...and I'm sure the excel thing could be taken out the the equation pretty quickly.
Everything else? Media consumption, web browsers, communications, etc...all on the phone and/or tablet now. To be able to take my main computer with me would be fantastic...it would also make PocketCloud infinitely more useful on a full screen with a full desktop interface (kb/mouse/full screen).
This is going to happen. Between "the cloud" and our own smaller clouds (home networks, SAN/NAS/Home Servers, media sharing hardware, etc) keeping a quad core 300-500 watt behemoth around is getting less and less necessary.
The only grey area so far is 'games', but, most people consume those on game consoles so that's likely a moot point.
...an interesting time to be alive in many ways, technology especially.
Yeah I did this as well. I never could pair it to my original epic.

I agree. This 30 pin connector, proprietary charging, no HDMI, coupled with no JB 4.2 so no miracast, this is one disconnected, connected, wired and shackled but supposedly mobile device.
I've only had it for three weeks and I miss a more connected, but liberated device.
It's frustrating cause this could be soooooo good.

my playbook, and my note 2 use 2 amp chargers. I just lucked or on the 30 pin connector because I had a mini usb to 30 pin connector for my tab 2 7.0, and an extra cable.
The tf300 was a dream to type on with the dock, but honestly, my note 10.1 kicks the crap out of it. The oem cover works great, with the exception of a lot of e's that come out 3.

I had no idea that this was happening.
It would be awesome if Samsung could come up with a transformer-esque type of keyboard/cover, or even a touch-cover like the Surface.
It makes the idea of a "Note netbook/laptop" a good one, but with two separated accessories i.e. stand + bluetooth keyboard, that idea is gone.
Shame :/
The tablet must be a tablet, not a computer if you want a computer buy it separately. A tablet is made for commands through touchscreen, if you want to have a tablet with dock keyboard buy a tablet-pc ( i own one..)

Eh? I can find the Samsung connector (which is actually a standard called "PDMI") just about anywhere (at least in the States), I've got more charger options now than i had with my Moto Xoom, especially if you buy one of these. HDMI and AllShare Cast work on my device, too.
I've used 4.2 and we're not really missing much useful save the multi-user feature.
I have 4 BT Keyboards, including one with a built-in stick mouse and a cover that folks to make a stand; the combo (which is light enough I carry it around in a case with my Note) gives me everything I could get with the KB dock except maybe charging and it's apparently more portable as well.
I'd say we're pretty well-connected

This. I've been able to travel with only my tablet (on certain business trips even) and have most of what i'd needed to do be accessible that way.
I went to verizon yesterday & saw a Samsung branded Keyboard dock for the Tab10.1. I tried it with the display model Tab 2 10.1 & it fit. I thought that the Tab 210.1 & the Note 10.1 were the same size. I was gutted to find it was not. It works if you pull out the plastic guide/holder, but then it is kind of flimsy in there. Bummer.
Wasnt there a rumor somewhere that one of Samsungs next tablets was going to be transformer-esque? I could have sworn I read something a few months ago about it.

Well, with the GNote 10.1 LTE coming to VZ soon, I'd expect they'd be getting accessories there, too (and likely to be hugely overpriced), so I'd come back again a little while after the GNote's available in VZ stores.
Tempted to grab one off ebay. What can I say, sometimes I get typity.

That sounds sort of narrow-minded in my opinion. Why can't a tablet be both or why can't a computer be a tablet? For an artist like me, I would love the opportunity if tablets got powerful enough to rival their notebook counterparts and offered a desktop view as well as for easy access with a keyboard and trackpad.
With the move of ultrabooks , especially the Surface Pro, converging into tablet territory with full features, one must consider that to be a blessing than a curse. Think about it in this way: Would you carry a radio, cd player , portable DVD player with TV, game system and an ereader just to be able to use them, or would you opt for the simpler solution of an all in one deal? That is the number one reason why the iPod took off: portability. Not only can you get a radio, but a music player and now video, games and reading.
It gets roughly cumbersome to carry every single CD, DVD ,game cart/disc in addition to the hardware , let alone the books for brief reading in commutes in comparison to an all out deal.
For the average consumer and artist, such things are so hard to get that it is pushed towards the rich ,but now similar tech now exists that has the potential to allow for maximal power and capability and the ability to change form factors on the fly. Why should people have to be inconvenienced to buying several different products that can be brought under one device when it can be deducted into one singular product that is amazing and does it all , broadly speaking?
If we went by this flawed logic an mp3 player must play music only, but no radio , thus how would iPods and whatnot be popular if they didn't serve multiple functions simply?

Thanks.....I think. Glad to hear about the PDMI. Just have to figure out how to use it.
What I was trying too say is everything is an add on so my kit ends up being as bulky as my ultrabook and far more prone to losing some piece that makes the whole thing work. my last tablet logged about 100k+/- frequent flyer miles. Using one power brick with one power end, one multi headed usb, one multi headed hdmi, one universal battery charger brick fit neatly in an airplane amenity bag, and served two cameras, one phone and a tablet. Needed no OTG cable to get the CF card reader seen by the tablet. Because I have a GNex, I already have a data/sync switch on my usb cable.
The cameras are the hardest and heaviest to carry.
So far, I've had to add another amenity kit to add the adapters for the Note. And I still don't have a way of using it to run a projector or tv. My phone ends up doing that.
Sent from my GT-N8000 using Tapatalk HD
Just bought one, stock is running out everywhere.
Time to think about soldering a split cable data/charging, and if that works hdmi.
Hope it's as nice as said, but returning is always an option in NL.:good:

What I want to be able to do with my GS3....

I want to be able to plug my GS3's USB port into a wire, or maybe do this wirelessly, and then see Android screen on a large monitor and use a mouse and keyboard to intract with the display on the large screen.
I am baffled at the idea that this is not possible... so I must be missing something?
I have a little netbook that I use in this way, and the GS3 is a much more powerful device (it can play videos that the netbook cannot manage).
Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. HDMI MHL adapter.
But why? They make a pc for that.
Gs3 is not very powerful and you won't have good resolution. Productivity will be minimal.
If you want a mobile PC grab a windows 8 tablet like the surface pro.
Do you want a desktop or a mobile device?
You could buy a transformer type tablet or build a desktop for pretty cheap.
If you want this to be mobile, that's a lot of crap to carry around... How would you even power the screen? Seems like those people who bring desktops to coffee shops.
If you want a desktop, you can come build or buy one that's much more powerful for not all that much more than the cost of hooking your phone up - and then you don't have to worry about battery life draining and overheating.

But I like the idea of having all this in my pocket and just plugging into a workstation at home.

If you want to be able to just plug it into yet another set of hardware at home... just go buy the stuff and plug it in.
Bluetooth is still a better deal than wired keyboard/mouse - but you still have the battery drain issue, which is why this is not a practical idea - especially since we're talking about an S3. It should be able to accept hardware input through the micro usb, but it's not really designed for that - and you'd have to get adapters and hub and why have all that crap taking up space if you already have a home system ? I wonder what would happen if you had three pieces of hardware trying to use the same micro-usb input, too (obviously, hubs work, but they have to share - and the monitor is going to want a lot of the available transfer capacity for itself) - makes more sense to just use it for HDMI to the monitor and use bluetooth for the peripherals.
If you had a phone that could run off AC only, it might fare better - since there'd be no battery constantly charging and draining and heating everything up, but the S3 won't do that.
Cool idea in theory ? Yeah. It would be great. But in practice, not so much. It would be better if the S3 could run from AC only - heck, it'd be almost a good idea. But since it can't and it lacks great cooling (since it's a compact, air-cooled phone), you're just going to be exposing the phone to high operating temperatures for extended periods of time which isn't exactly great for it.
