Never ever go for the official update if you're rooted. A couple of users early this year killed their phones this way.
As per wildcard, just get a custom 2.2 rom.

If you want the official stock rom rooted you can install an RUU (with a Goldcard if required) then root that or you can pick up one of the pre-rooted stock roms. Either way will work although using the pre-rooted rom will be quicker.

I have read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814381 thread
As I bought HTC desire unlocked rooted phone from ebay, How to check which method was used for Rooting..I went to Hboot I says Clockworkmod options..Is that mean unrevoked was used?
For flashing a Rom , 42Turkeys said use Titanium back up...Will it create conflict with Clockworkmod ?
When I do back up using Titanium, will it back up my previous ROM ?
How can i check which ROM is currently flashed in my phone?
Here is what I see after settings->My phone
Please find the Software Info below:-

I talked to my seller he said that It's a one click system update that takes 2 mins to update to Froyo 2.2 but above you guys mentioned not to do the updates
Please help!

If your going to use a custom Rom use ownheredesirehd it is great uses Android 2.2.1 and has the new HTC sense, I use it and I get around 2600 every time on benchmark. It is a very good Rom and you should really consider using it.

What you need to do is:
1. root your phone using unrevoked
2. Start up the phone into bootloader and at the top is it says s-on you need to download and do this from alphabet.nl
3. If it says s-off don't worry and download a custom Rom (I recommend ownheredesirehd)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=860602&page=51
4. Boot into recovery and press install from .zip on sdcard
5. Find your downloaded file and press yes install.
6. It could take about 25 minutes to install but will be worth it.
Before you do this make sure you have a backup of your current Rom by booting into recovery and selecting backup.
Also backup all your apps using titanium backup so that you don't lose them.
And lastly before you flash a new Rom make sure your sdcard is partitioned into two partitions, all remainingFAT32 and 1.5gb ext3
Reply to tell me how it goes or if you need any more help.

Should I install Titanium back up first , wil it not create conflict with clockworkmod ? Also, backup is on the phone or by connecting to PC

Titanium backup is an app for the phone. Clockwork is a recovery. So to answer your question, no, they will not conflict, and all backing up is done through your phone, although once backed up, you have the option of putting the backup in a safe place in your PC.

The Rom in your phone at the moment is the stock HTC 2.1 Rom, if you Rom changes your software number will change and probably the kernel too.

Want to root and debrand my vodafone 2.1 version

Hey there,
so I'm a newbie but I tried to research myself and found many good things, but I still have some questions:
First I want to tell you my software numbers:
FW: 2.1-update1
Baseband: 32. 36. 00. 28 U_4. 06. 00. 02_2
kernel: 2. 6. 29-b7e82785 (htc-kernel @ and18-2#1)
build-number: 1. 19. 161. 5 CL171460 release keys
Software number: 1. 19. 161. 5
browser version: webkit 3.1
My bootloader is 0.80
1. Do I still need these long descriptions on how to root/debrand by using goldcards? Or whats the difference to unrevoke which seems to be pretty forward and simple...?
2. I have a german HTC desire brandeed by vodafone, but the software numbers from above seem to match the ones from here:
forum#xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667 (UK version)
(RUU_Bravo_Vodafone_UK_1.19.161.5_Radio_32.36.00.28 U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126338_signed.exe)
And even if they wouldn't, it would NOT be necessary as I can always restore my nandroid backup, right?
3. So would it be possible at any time to move from rooted desire to unrooted with original recovery menu and with the branded software in case of warranty status...?
4. After installing unrevoke3, I am root, right? So I could install titanium backup, than wipe and install another custom rom and restore everything, right? Or how do you make it to just keep all your data when changing roms etc?! Are all settings of apps also kept? like the screens of launcherpro etc?
5. Is this the right way to go: After installing unrevoke3 with its recovery menu, making a full backup with nandroid so in case of warranty I just have to restore this backup to have my original branded rom with all my data so it seems to HTC as the original phone, right? without root etc...
Thanks so far for clearing!
Hi mate I dont have answers to all your questions but I rooted using the unrevoked method and it was very easy. Mine is a Virgin Media locked UK Desire and is now running froyo.
As i understand it, it is quite simple to restore your phone by using a similar method to this
http://www.machackpc.com/headline/restore-your-nexus-one-to-its-original-shipping-image/
As for the warranty. I guess it would be a case of what the fault was. I mean if your USB port breaks then you wouldn't be able to connect to the phone to restore it. same goes for the power button and screen etc
In my opinion if you do change the ROM on your phone or Root it then I think you just have to accept that its not going to have a warranty and you would be better accidently dropping it and returning it to your provider for a refurbished replacement on your phone insurance.

[Q] n00b Question about rooting

Okay so ive just bought a HTC Desire, after owning an Xperia X10, i was just wondering is it possible to root the Desire without unlocking the bootloader, I want to keep the HTC Sense UI, but be able to install things like setCPU and Titanium Backup Pro

Or course. But I recommend a custom rom, like leedroid for example(with htc sense )

Yes, don't need to unlock anything. Just download unrEVOked and away you go!
Don't worry about S-OFF (although people will tel you to do it) - it's not needed if that's all you want to do
HOWEVER, if you're the Orange ROM there will be no way of removing root and going back to 100% stock as sent by Orange if you root. Something to be mindful of
Its an unlocked device, thanks guys appreciate the help

Ah right! Well, as soon as you get it post up the information before you do anything else - best be certain on what you currently have before continuing
you can use unrevoked, and it will just root the phone for you.
You will still have the stock sense rom running, but it will be rooted allowing you to install apps which require a device to be rooted

Nothing, did it for the hell of it!!
Only thing I've found useful is I can replace the splash screen with one of my own, and it now means AdFree is working as I can't work out how to edit the script to link the hosts file to the SD card yet in my own ROM!
So my desire got delivered today,

EDIT: Orange version is 2.17.61.2, I think you've got the Virgin version
EDIT EDIT: You've got the 3 UK ROM so I take it you're not on Orange
You're in luck! Get this and keep it safe:

S-off can also be used to alter the partition tables in order the get more space on /data which is where you're apps are stored.
I'm running Oxygen 2.0 with the Oxygen HBoot table and once I flashed the Oxygen table my free space on the phone went from 80MB free to over 300MB so that's why I went S-off. But make sure you know what you're doing first. If something goes wrong when you're attempting to S-off of flash a new partition table it will brick your phone.
I prefer to use A2SD+ - got 1.5GB partition so plenty of space
(Not that I actually much space - just like to know it's there)
That works too. I prefer it stored on my phone. A bit easier for me to set up and I find it runs faster with it not having to access the SD.
True, might look into that but I still use Sense - we'll see...

[Q] Confused--Just want factory clean!

Hi, I recently purchased a secondhand HTC Desire Z off eBay that had been both unlocked from Bell Wireless and had a custom rom installed on it. I am having an impossible time figuring out what to do and when to do it--what I want is a Desire Z that is running the stock rom (which I currently don't have and no not where to download) that has been overclocked anywhere up to 2GHz. I would also like all of my applications to function normally (currently YouTube videos will not play). Here is all of the software info:
Android Version:

Baseband Version:

Kernel Version:

Build Number:
1.85.73.2 CL331649 release-keys
Software Number:
Virtuous v1.0.2 (Vision)
Browser Version:
WebKit 3.1
I've tried rooting it with Visionary, which doesn't work (I get a black screen after it attempts to root for about 20 seconds).
Please, step-by-step instructions would be greatly valued. I'm currently using a Mac, but I have Windows 7 installed on a Bootcamp partition, so if you may give me instructions in either terminal or cmd; either works.

There is a guide for reverting back to stock in the wiki however, not having a backup of a partition that is changed in the process of rooting, you won't be able to return the phone to an "out of the box" state. If you're just wanting the stock ROM, just download the stock ROM (check the sticky in the dev section) and flash it to your device.

What is the ultimate purpose of that partition that I can no longer get back? Is it going to drastically effect how the phone runs?

Basically, removing root capability. If you just want a stock ROM, just check the sticky (sorry, I'd link to it if I weren't on the XDA app) in the dev thread for a list of available stock ROMs.

The problem is that I don't currently have root access. Visionary is crashing, I tried using rage, which was also unsuccessful; I'm unable to install or manage roms using Rom Manager because of the lack of root access. Can I force the rom onto the phone and force install it using adp? Thanks in advance.
It looks like you're already rooted considering that the Virtuous ROM has already been flashed to your device.
Can you boot into CWM by powering on with the power+vol down combination?
I can boot into CWM, but I can't manage roms using the rom manager app. I have to download clockworkmod, but rom manager claims to not have permission to do that. I am unable to go to superuser and give it permissions. How would I go about putting the stock rom on the device and installing it?
Have a look at the development forum -- as of now, there are some stock or nearly stock ROMs (albeit rooted) available for download.
Afterwards, place the .zip on your sdcard, reboot into CWM and install from there.
I'll try it tonight and let you know how it works. Thanks in advance!

I am also trying to revert my phone back to factory settings for warranty purposes and I used clockworkmod to go back to my original rom but I cannot find the original recovery image to put back so s-off can be turned back on. Every thread I read says to download a file similar to pc10img.zip and go into bootloader so it will load except boot loader says "wrong image" or "image not found" what do do and where can I get a good file

Thank you so much; it all worked out! I updated the rom to the 2.4 version of xboarder56's Gingerbread. Everything works, and it's overclocked to 1.5GHz--fast enough to play N64 roms on N64oid at full speed (pretty much the reason I bought this phone, lol).

Do you all know that it is nessecarily to downgrade your device ROM Software to Version 1.32 or 1.72??
You CAN NOT ROOT your device with Gingerbread or Android 2.x the easy way.
Check this and download your ROM 1.2x or 1.3x or 1.7x for your current provider.
Flash it - and after all ROOT it.

he asked for the rom build version not the kernel version. but anyway this kernel version indicates a gingerbread rom version. as he said above you need to downgrade. look up jkojos post.

Hi the advanced ace hack kit is the way to root. Its very simple as long as you follow the instructions in the effin manuel. You can then download a custom rom. RCmix3d runny v3.3 is probably the best one but are are a few others you can choose from. Good luck, here is the link for you.

Yes it's very easy. You will soon become a flashoholic. download a rom onto your sd card then all you do is take out your battery, put the battery back in, hold down lower volume and then hold the power on button. This will take you into hboot mode, scroll down to recovery, it will then flash pd98img image for a second, go into rocovery mode and then select install zip from sd card then select choose zip from sdcard and it will then flash your rom. Once it has finished you can then reboot. After you have installed your rom make sure you download rom manager from the market and do a back up of your system. that is basically how you flash a rom, its a good idea to download a superwipe to your sd card so when you flash a different rom you wipe it clean. Hope this helps.
thanks alot yeah that helps alot see this superwipe does it take the numbers off my mobile it would take ages to put them back in now what a mean ?

No it doesn't as long as you have saved them to your sim card. If you flash a HTC sense rom and you install a different HTC sense rom, say by someone else, because you have already backed up the previous rom, after you download the next and when you are in recovery mode if you go to back up & restore, advanced, select the date and then select restore data, it will restore all your data, logins, passwords, apps on your home screens e.g so that you do not need to log in again. Its brilliant. hope it all goes well.
thanks alot ill be doing that the mora thanks alot legend
