How do I know if my Desire is rooted?

I bought a handset off another forum a couple of months back and I think it's a fully unbranded handset, and have been trying to run the 2.2 update, except everytime I get to the green sync symbol after it restarts, I then get a red question mark.
I'm running
Firmware 2.1 update1
Build number .1.1.405.2 CL174215 release keys
Software number 1.21.405.2
So is this rooted? Either way, how do I get the Froyo update to work?

You will know if it is rooted cos you wont be able to pull it out the ground lol
Only jokin if you phone is rooted you will have a program in your apps called super user.

Yeah thats the one your phone is rooted

Ok. That answers the first part I guess then. Any ideas how I get to Froyo? I can download the update, but it always fails to do it's thing.
Do I have to restore the phone or what? And how?

is your phone branded in any way? even a start up logo ?
and where can you download the update? from system software updates on your phone?

There's no branding on the phone, box or software. I can download the update via software updates.

If you can download it from software updates go for it froyo here we go,
no branding is a good sign

Same thing with me....
I bought a Telstra Branded Handset. Had a company root and install a generic rom. (Telstra handset because it works on ATT 3G.) This morning, the phone told me that I had an Android Software Update (Version 2.2). The phone downloaded it, but wouldn't install. I imagine because the dang thing is rooted.
I will wait a few days for someone to offer a desire rom with 2.2 and HTC sense.

Is there an easy way to restore the handset to it's original software so I can upgrade from there?

Look for the Unrooting guide in the (sticky) guides collection. I believe it just involves flashing a stock rom. But currently you won't be able to root your phone after official OTA froyo update, since it flashes your hboot too. Alternatively you can flash a rooted froyo ROM without hboot.
Edit: Look in development forum for the sticky guide. The place to be for topics like this; it makes them obsolete.

It took a bit of time to download all the updates, but I got there in the end.

My Desire is rooted, 2.1, not 2.2 Froyo, I wish. But I am trying to things in the file management like install and move around apk files. But it wont allow saying I have no permissions. Rooted to me means God access, but its not really god access. Any ideas why?

Even if you are rooted, you will have READ ONLY access to /system due to NAND protection. You can only write to /system from recovery.

[Q] First time rooting, scared to death, have a question!

Hi all,
So I'm on O2 UK with a branded (and I assume locked) Desire.
HBOOT: 0.80
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Rom version: 1.20.207.3
Bottom line is, I want to root before O2 push out their 2.2 update which will inevitably increase my HBOOT version. I'm a actually a software developer by trade, but I'm scared and want to take this whole rooting process slowly.
I've already created a goldcard but I've also set up my PC ready for the Unrevoked method, so I'll probably end up using that. So my main question is:
- Once I've rooted with unrevoked, do I HAVE to install a custom ROM that very minute or can I simply reboot my phone and use the stock ROM until I feel I'm ready to reflash?

Good evening lodger. I was in the same place s you, o2, new desire and first time boot.
I used the unrevoked method, it took 5 mins and have not needed a gold card.
I have flashed another ROM straight away however my phone re booted in to the original Rom and I could continue to use it with the original o2 Rom but just with root access.

So if I were to just take a nandroid backup at this point and boot the phone normally, I would see no difference until I actually flashed a custom rom with root access?
I'm actually unsure as to whether the phone is actually locked as I've been with O2 for a looooong time and never had a locked phone from them and unfortunately I don't have another sim card to try in it. The only branding is the O2 boot screen, nothing else. So if anyone could confirm the thing about needing an unlock code that would be great.
Sorry for all of the questions, I'd just like to understand the process a little better before applying it to my pride and joy

As of unrevoked version 3.0 it will root your desire and install a custom recovery.
So you'll have a stock Rom that's rooted, then you can nandroid backup and install a custom Rom when ever you want.

I can confirm the first reply you got was wrong. Unrevoked is the easiest and best method to use. It WILL root your phone as well as install a custom recovery. You can then continue to use the stock rom with the benefits of root.

You won't require an unlock code for an o2 branded phone.
O2 phones are normally locked, but iirc you can use Orange sim cards in there too.

The only people who need an unlock code are Orange users.
As for unrEVOked, it will give you root. The handset will be perfectly usable as soon as unrEVOked is finished. You can then choose to stay as you are or play with all the roms in the dev forum.
Personally I'd jump straight into the dev section and download like a geek on speed

So once I'm rooted, I can jump straight onto the market and download titanium backup and get all my stuff backed up, then I'm pretty much good to go right? (I'll feel a LOT happier once I have a backup!)
Any recommendations as to which rom I should go with first? There are a LOT out there and as a newbie to all of this, sifting through them is a tad daunting.
What's the deal with radio updates? Is there anything I should be aware of when applying them? Should they be applied first, before the OS rom or the other way around?
Having already created a goldcard, is it worth hanging onto it? I hear they do come in handy.
Again, sorry for all the questions but I figure it's best to ask them now rather than get stuck further down the line.

It depends what your looking for in a rom. If you want froyo with sense you could try ones by pays, or the leedroid one. If you want plain android, I'd go for defrost by richard trip, or opendesire by adamg.
You will need the latest radio for the new froyo roms for stability and to ensure no echo during calls. The radio is the baseband that you see listed in about phone. It will also increase your wifi and mobile network strength.
When flashing the radio your phone will reboot twice. It is extremely important that you do not interrupt the flashing process and if it looks like it's frozen or whatever, just leave it, and be patient. The radio flash is perfectly safe, but if you do interrupt it you will have an unrecoverable brick!
Titanium will work as soon as you have root, I'd get the paid version if you have a lot of apps, as the free version requires you to confirm each app install one by one, paid version is fully automatic.
Finally, if you want to put your apps to sd card, then the froyo one is rubbish! Most if not all the custom roms use oldschool a2sd which is far better but requires an ext3 partition to be made on your card. To make the ext3 partition use either the custom recovery you have from unrEVOked or download rom manager from the market. The process of creating the partition will ddelete your sd card though so take a backup if needed.
Hope this helps you a bit, and good luck. Once you have tried a few roms you will love it

This is wrong, Orange users must use a compatable radio meaning there's no need to unlock.
As for you, if your phone is locked then you will need to flash a compatable radio like orange users. I'm not sure which radio versions o2 uses so it may be worth googling or checking which radio your running. In future when flashing a custom firmware use one that doesn't have a radio file bundled with it.

Unless something has changed you are incorrect. Any radio updated away from the stock one locked orange handsets. No other networks are affected.
All froyo roms require the latest radio. This is not optional.

Something has changed because I have a locked orange desire, with the latest radio running the latest open desire firmware and have not had a sim lock message.
I wouldn't of said what I did if I wasn't sure

Best custom rom is neophyte 1.6 if you want sense froyo

Well I guess the only way to find out will be to pop a different sim in and see what happens. I haven't yet seen anyone with an O2 branded phone with problems flashing to froyo on my forum travels, but I guess its worth finding out for sure. I'm prepared to pay for an unlock code if need be.
So would I be better off using clockworkmod to flash to 2.2 or Rom manager? I assume I have the choice now?
I've taken a titanium backup so now all I have to do is put the radio and os roms on the root of my SD card, flash, *pray* then restore my apps after it reboots?

Well I finally grew a pair and flashed neophyte 1.6 and i'm proper impressed! Thank you to everyone again for your help and advice.
For the record, I didn't need an unlock code. I just flashed the latest radio and rom straight after each other in clockwork and rebooted. That first boot is a loooong scary one but it was all good in the end

Well,you remind me of myself when I tried to root my Hero...The whole process had scared the **** out of me!Well,until VillainRom booted that is!
I haven't rooted my Desire yet as I was stupid enough to install the 2.2 OTA,but will do something soon enough...UnrEVOked can't do anything with the new HBOOT,can it?

It was by far the scariest thing I've done this year!
Only thing I seem to be having a problem with is Juice Defender + Ultimate Juice (if anyone uses it?). When Juice Defender disables mobile data depending e.g. when the screen is locked, it keeps coming back on by itself which just adds to the battery drain. I've scoured setting after setting in case there's something forcing mobile data back on after JD disables it but found nothing. This used to work perfectly before I switched roms and it's kinda frustrating.
I'll probably have to try a couple of roms until I find one that works well with all my apps.
No, UnrEVOked doesn't work with a HBOOT > 0.80. From what I've read, there is a way to downgrade your HBOOT to 0.80 but with very mixed success rates.

HTC Desire 2.1 T-Mobile - Flash Android 2.2 without T-Mobile?

Hi guys.
I am about to buy a HTC Desire tomorrow.
It is SOFTWARE-Branded to T-Mobile and has Android 2.1
But i dont want a T-Mobile Software-Branding and i want Android 2.2 (and 2.2 with all features ...) so i would like to flash to a Android 2.2 ROM where i dont have any branding and all features (Tethering ...)
So i guess i am searching for a way to make my Android 2.1 T-Mobile to a "rooted" Android 2.2 without branding and with all features.
How do i do this guys?
Im new to Flashing and ROMs and i never used Android before.

1) no you wont if you mean sense ui.. that just depends if you want a custom ROM.. just read to see if its a sense ui, or a non- sense ui ROM..
2) no need! just run a correct RUU file to unroot and get your warrenty back! and before rooting you will probobly do a nandroid back up, so all's good

Im thinking about The pre-rooted stock Froyo and use the Mods: PowerPack and FlashPlugin

Do what I did. Buy phone via contractor like mobile phones direct. I've ordered 600 min 500 txt and free internet but they gave me 900/500 and 1 gb of net that was capped. After I've received the phone I've emailed tmobile and said that mpd miss leaded me and I only have 1gb net of capped hsdpa but in t&c it says that it should be 3gb and complained about the speed. Next day they rang me and unlocked everything . And more importantly desire is unbranded so I had froyo update when it arrived.... Hope this helps.. Still have warranty and at the moment font need rooting

Correct me if I'm wrong, but unlocking a phone still doesn't make it unbranded, as it has the customized software. However, this could trigger the update notification, which then would start the update process for FW2.2.

Is your device PVT4 old (20000) or PVT4 new (40000)?
Read this thread to find out how to check this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853583
You shouldn't have any problems rooting and flashing custom ROMs if your device has a PVT4 20000 erasesize. Use unrEVOked v3.22, safe and best successful method so far.
If your PVT4 has an erasesize of 40000, then i know of only of certain number of ROMs that have been confirmed to work with this type of device - Oxygen, LeeDroid's, ReflexTSenseHD, and MIUI.
You should not have a problem flashing any of these custom ROMs with the modified CWM-AlphaRev Recovery 2.5.1.3, which you must install with unrEVOked if your phone has an erasesize of 40000
As you were originally branded to T-Mobile, you will need to create a Gold Card only if you want to revert back to your original stock ROM (i.e. later on for warranty reasons). You should be able to find your original RUU by searching shipped-roms.com.

A2SD+/Data2SD will work fine for you and since you are already rooted, you will not need to re-root or reinstall clockwork either. Flash away in confidence

Yes you will need to, all custom roms require this prerequisite really. You can use Rom Manager to achieve this, it allows you to create up to an SD-EXT size of 512 MB for dedicated app data space. If you require a bigger EXT partition use AmonRa and flash with unrevoked, or use GParted - there are plenty guides on the forum on how to do this.
Yes, you dont need s-off, unless you want full root access to your phone.

I don't use that clock anymore, nor do I use sense UI... I'm a fully fledged miui convert
If you want the sense clock, search the marketplace for 'sense clock widget', there are many variations - customisable too

Well if that's your thing then by all means, go for it

I totally understand where you are coming from though... I used to love sense ui and everything it had to offer but once I tried miui, I was amazed at how good it actually was/is, running out of superlatives for it
You could also give the DHD roms a go (ported from Desire HD), as they include the cool new sense features.

No need to apologise and its good that you are making the effort to ask before a mistake is made, so i appreciate that.
He did debrand by using unrEVOked - it does not require you to use a Gold Card for it and provides you with root access (software root) to the phone. Only when you want to return to stock rom, you then you will need to create and use a Gold Card before running the appropriate RUU. If you want to create a Gold Card, use the one in my sig below.

You have two options here.
If you are branded and want to root in order to install a custom ROM, then you either create a Gold Card to unlock the phone's CID, just use unrEVOked, which does not require the creation of a Gold Card and provides you with root access to your phone, thus allowing you to flash custom roms, custom kernels, and custom radios. I don't know the full workings of unrEVOked, but it bypassed your phones CID lock feature and does not require you to create a Gold Card.
You only need to create a Gold Card if you want to return to stock rom as you were originally network branded.

Software branding, for instance, when you boot the phone, it will show your network carrier splashscreen, like T-Mobile, or 02, or Orange. Also, their own icons will also be visible on the homescreen, for example.

[Q] Rooting 2.3.3 "official" with Revolutionary

Hi,
I'm thinking of switching to a new phone, even though I love the Desire for everything except the fact I have no space for apps!
So rooting may be my only option to keep the phone. As I have 2.3.3 "official" ROM I'm stuck using the Revolutionary method.
So, they ask for my serial number? What are the consequences of giving it to them? Can they try and register my phone elsewhere, gain access, etc. etc.
I'm happy with the process and I've done similar on an HTC Diamond years ago. I just want to feel comfortable that my serial number can't be used for no good.

They only use your data to generate a unique code to get S-OFF. Once S-OFF, you can flash the zip to root your device. After that you can decide whether to flash a new Hboot, or only a ROM.
No phishing and stuff, it's safe.

That's so wrong, falser it cannot be.
The official gingerbread rom by HTC upgrades hboot to version 1.02.0001 which is completely supported by revolutionary. And with revolutionary you get S-OFF in the first step and in the second root by flashing the superuser.zip from their website.

Had the same problem (also desire with original 2.3.3.) I rooted the revolutionary way and had no problems. Then use " link2sd" app. Works great!

this was the exact reason why i changed roms.
i´m now running a sense 3.5 rom with an ext 4 partition.
Now I have 1,3gig of internal space.
that solved my problem
