Ok. I live in a area where Sprint's 4G isn't present at all. However, a company that provides internet through WiMAX to us people out in BFE, who can't get landline internet, are able to use this. The DL speeds I think, max out for this company at around 3-6Mbps. Instead of using Sprint 3G coverage, which isn't full RevA 3.1Mbps, it's like 1-1.5Mbps.
Long story short, can I/could I modify my 4G/WiMAX MAC Address or something to jump on their towers and fully get my $10/Month worth?
I tried looking for this on my own, but the things that I am finding are if I recently did a OS Update, and my MAC has been mixed up and scrambled, not to fully mod the MAC.
edit: would there be a way, to even know if this would work? as in do they have to know my MAC address to provide me the service? Basically, an approval?
edit: post has been moved.

At least I am not the only one who wants to know. Lol.
I could be way off base, but this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=733773) talks about editing wimax signal settings, maybe exploring in that menu will let you edit other wimax settings to get you what you want. Perhaps somebody with more technical knowledge can confirm/dispell this theory. Hopefully this at least points in the right direction...

not really.. however this guide was helpful though. but i am looking for a way to modify my entire WiMAX structure to read off these "foriegn, non-sprint" towers that are data only.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you have RSA keys on your phone for a reason. to verify you are who you are and to make sure your data doesn't get mixed up and that you can use clear's towers (sprint basically).
The company probably has a way to identify authorized users on its network and who is not authorized to use it.
That is the issue you ill most likely run into when you are trying to connect to their network.
Technically you shouldn't be able to do that but maybe the company doesn't give a damn....Ehh

What is the benefit of this>?
you can read all about it in the evo 4g forums
however the issue here (or at least for me) is
I can't find where to edit the realm on the epic
its not the data profile username?
[email protected]?
i tried changing that with the [email protected]
i still got the sprint wall
where do i change the realm on the epic...uhg
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780742&highlight=cricket
found it...so dumb...
to change wimax realm enter ##data# but hit 'view' (i kept hitting 'edit')
then wimax will be in the list
wimax will then request your msl if pressed
the realm can be found there and edited with a long press
now i'm stuck at the final step
i may be wrong but i believe the wimax should have its own NAI
and that changing the normal data profile NAI to [email protected] doesn't do anything
because i'm still not getting the Clear wall
and of course our phones are enough different from the evo that NAI couldn't just be right there to be easily edited...
maybe i'm wrong...but its still not working for me
wimax debug mode is still showing sprint as my provider...so i'm 98% sure i haven't found the correct NAI to edit
more uhg
I changed my realm and found that I am definitely getting a clearwire IP, and all http traffic gets redirected to clearwire's site. Definitely a good step in the right direction at any rate.
for me all web pages fail and do not redirect
but i can navigate to clear.home.com and it loads
where oh where could the wimax nai be hiding

Just changed mine and definitely goes to the Clear servers. Tested my 4G speeds at work and it is slightly faster on the Clear realm. However, the real test will be when I get home where I get excellent Clear coverage, but horrible Sprint 4G coverage. Will post an update later on tonight.
As for the NAI, don't think it is necessary as I am definitely getting the Clear towers when I switch the realm. But I don't know for sure.

Did you just change Realm and profile? there is a clearwire tower right in front of my neighborhood. I get directed to home.clear.com
Just tested at home... Sprint 4G @ 2.5mbps down vs Clear @ 7.25mbps down. Definitely a difference. I only changed the WIMAX Realm, nothing else. The clear also seems more reliable. On Sprint it will constantly drop and re-search for the 4G connection.
FYI both have uploads that hover around 1.0mbps.

No dice in changing from sprint to clear realm. Redirect to clear.com page all the time. I changed it back to sprint.
I would really appreciate a little "how to" on switching your realm to Clear. I am relatively new to this, and have tried searching with google and in the forum search tool, and havent really uncovered anything.... According to Sprint, I should have 4g at my apartment here in east Portland, but my signal disconnects about a mile away. I have a friend who sells Clear, and he said he has sold clear service up and down my area. I know that the area has Clear, I just want to access it..... Thanks in advance....

Awesome thank you! This worked for me! I couldn't get 4g to work at work and now it works on the clear realm, can't wait to test it at home tonight to see if it's better or worse than sprint's realm (or if there is any difference at all).

Is it just me or is fully flashing the Samsung Epic 4G to MetroPCS the best kept secret?
I got my phone fully flashed today from some guy on Craigslist and it's literally mind-boggling that no one on the internet has toppled this "obstacle". Am I missing something? Is there a reason why legitimate information about flashing the Epic to Metro is so rare to find?
By the way, I've been viewing the settings for the last hour and literally everything I've seen on the internet was obsolete. MMSC URL, DSA Server, and even altering the proxy and port in the Advanced Wi-Fi Settings. There's not even a proxy or port displaying at all.
I'm still rooted but I was running EC05 (Official Froyo) with the SyndicateROM Frozen Rom but now that he reflashed it, I'm stuck with ECLAIR DG27... I'm not risking a manual update because I don't want to lose my MMS and Web functionality especially considering the fact that I had to pay smh.
If anyone needs my ##DATA# settings, let me know. Maybe, together, we can figure this thing out...
It's mostly because
1) Our phone isn't exactly popular on demand.
2) Our phone isn't appreciated for what it has.
3) The Dev's who had metro and this phone went poof.
4) The other 5 things I missed.
because metro pretty much sucks...
I always put geo engines in my lambos

Does the data work on this phone? Can you wireless teather? Can you browser the internet? Does mms work?
I haven't tried tethering but everything else works. I even tried out the GPS on my way home, works flawlessly.
No surprise the GPS works... That is a completely independent service. Transmitter and software.
You're right about the GPS. The internet works and mms also sends and receives. I'm sure we'll soon find a solution to this problem.

Please, be gentle, since this is my first thread ever.
I was reading up on this information at AndroidPolice.com regarding Sprint blocking tethering apps from the Market.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...locking-tethering-apps-in-the-android-market/
In Art Russ's G+, some people were commenting about the ability of Sprint reading NAT Headers to find out whether you're tethering or not
https://plus.google.com/111991876596496628445/posts
I'm not actively using tethering, in fact I haven't even rooted the E4GT yet, but I did have my former Evo3D rooted to tether to my Asus Transformer.
Now my wife has CM7 on her HP Touchpad, and I still have my Asus Transformer. I'd like to be able to tether to them if we're on a trip somewhere away from the house, but I don't like having "big brother" knowing that I'm doing so.
Summarizing, can they detect tethering, more specifically, to Android (Honeycomb/2.3 version CM7 uses on Touchpad) tablets? figured maybe if the machine tethered was running android it would end up being the same or similar "header" (or whatever is called/checked) and wouldn't matter, but I could be way far off.
Please, let me know. Also, please, no bashing; in case this was answered previously. I took the time to search but didn't find this specific case commented after the "iPhone effect". If you find this has been answered elsewhere, please provide me with a link to that discussion so I can read up on it.
Thank you, and best regards.
I don't know about Sprint (I haven't heard of any instances myself) but AT&T has been sending notices to people about automatically changing their accounts to a more expensive tethering plan for awhile now. With AT&T it doesn't seem to matter what you tether to, they catch you. There's posts in either the Atrix forums or Inspire forums on Xda about it, I forget which.
Edit: The thread is in the Atrix general forum, there's over 400 posts.

Download Foxfi to your phone, its off the market so do a Google search for it and then get PDAnet Tablet app for your tablet or PDAnet for your desktop or laptop. They all work flawlessly for tethering...
Ive been running custom roms on my E4GT that come with a hacked version of Sprints Hotspot and i tether my tablet,laptop,etc...and ive been doing it for about 7 months or so and ive never had any problems or issues from Sprint. I also do the same thing with my Evo 4G thats runnin MikG 3.11 rom, that also has Sprints Hotspot hacked for free use. However i have heard of a few ppl recieving letters from sprint bcuz they were using a hacked Sprint hotspot,or wifi tether app,for free, but they only recieved those letters bcuz they were using around 40GB,or more, data a month. One excuse to use would be that u stream Netflix to ur LCD/LED tv via ur devices micro hdmi output to the hdmi input on ur tv. just my 2 cents.

Can sprint detect tethering? Almost certainly yes, by any number of ways - NAT info, web browser user agent string, types of traffic.
Are they actively seeking out users tethering at the current time? Not that we know of.
I've been (very infrequently) tethering on Sprint since Windows Mobile 6.x, and had no trouble. Think of it like your neighbor's open WiFi - using it sparingly and infrequently, and no one will notice or mind. But if you start torrenting/downloading like crazy, eventually someone's going to smack you. (all of us?)

There are apps that mask that type of information at the present moment. This question is asked every couple of months. I suggest you google search and look up the hundreds of threads about this and see if anyone has gotten themselves in any trouble. Remember the ones who tether and not like the user above said not the ones who use torrents...
If you do find 1 just 1 please post back here I would like to meet them....

all it does is forces your phone to roam of a vzw tower. you will always roam. the dialer code for us is actually ##3282#. and most hacked prl's (00001 00002 01337 etc) will not write using the phone itself you must use something like qpst/cdma workshop to apply. personally i tend to drop to 1x when i use any of those but i dont know if thats just me or not. to apply name the prl your trying to "test.prl" and put on the root of your sd card. hit ##3282# in the dialer and when the menu comes up hit view. at the bottem hit PRL write and then the button that pops up after. It will apply and reboot. Cant hurt nothing but most likely wont work from the phone. results may very. from what i remember only one that worked for me writing from the phone was 01337 however all three didnt get me 3g. good luck

actually they will with Any Cut. But using the 00001 PRL is dumb. Use a Sprint Corporate PRL like 11115, 11117, or 11119. They also allow roaming on 3g and when roam control is working on our phone you'll be able to toggle between Sprint and Verizon.

You know, Im getting sick of people posting **** that they should know doesnt belong in the development thread. @Autorail - read the rules before you post. You cant post in development when you first get an account for a reason. It gives you plenty of time to read the rules. There is a sticky on the first page of development. If you bothered to read it, it says:
Only the following topics are allowed in DEVELOPMENT area:
[DEV] - Development for any special projects or Apps
[ROM] - Custom ROMs
[KERNEL] - Custom Kernels
[MOD] - Hack & Modifications for the phone
[FIX] - Fixes for known issues & bugs
[R&D] - Research & Development for Devs only, when gathering data for a new projects
[HOWTO] / [GUIDE] - How to instructions and Guides
If whatever you are posting doesnt fall into any of those categories, than it goes somewhere else.
I hate seeing this crap on every freaking device. READ, READ, READ, and use the SEARCH BUTTON.
If I would of known people would be getting butt hurt because of a honest mistake I wouldn't of posted in the first place . Hinges mistake so what give me a warning suspend or cancel my account doesn't matter you guys get but hurt to easily haha
Download 00001.prl, put in in the root of internal storage - /sdcard. Rename it to test.prl, disable mobile data, from phone dialer - ##3282#, choose view, choose write prl, choose write prl. After reboot, reenable mobile data and you should be roaming on Verizon, possibly roaming with 3g speeds.
You can confirm this by going to Settings/About/Status, where PRL will be "1".
To reset back to Sprint prl, go to Settings/System Updates, then do Update Profile, then Update PRL.

We have given our young daughters Galaxy S ll’s. Our cell provider is kajeet.com which has decent parental controls on phone usage including Internet access via the cell connection. But kajeet doesn’t affect the wifi connection. Hence, Internet access is available.
We would like to shut down the wifi and have the phones used only for texting and talk. The girls have other forms of (monitored) Internet access.
Does anyone have a solution for shutting down the wifi connection?
I have done quite a bit of research on the web for an answer and haven’t come up with anything that is largely within our control.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Jona
First up, what model phone are we talking about (sticker on the phone chassis under the battery) ? Reason I ask is, I noticed Kajeet uses Sprint, which means there's a good chance you're in the wrong forum. As the I9100 wasn't sold in great numbers in the US, various carriers have their own variants, which have their own forums here.
I honestly doubt you can do it (I'm not aware of any way to block access outright), you can probably use one of the myriad security apps on Google Play to block WiFi access to individual apps (I.E all of them). But that might be different for different SGS2 variants (being an I9100 forum, I only know this for the I9100).
If you do have a different variant, we'll have the thread moved & maybe those who have the same phone might be able to tell you something different.
Months ago on cm10.1 i had managed to completely disable wifi by accident on numerous occasions by flashing old versions of dorimanx kernels that update the wifi drivers, then flash stock cm kernel again that uses old drivers, couldn't turn wifi on or off until I reflashed cm, so it is indeed possible. Not sure how you'd go about this. Maybe remove wifi drivers from rom if you are rooted? Sorry I'm not much help, just thought I'd share this.

my opinion, disableing wifi from a young kid will not stop him to access internet from any other place instead it will make him search and found more just because he dont have easy access to information he want. soo this is not the right thing to do but start takling to him and understanding his
needs will do more good. But this is just my opinion it seems thees days there are too many ways to find out things and there is noone who can shut them all off. Cheers!!

You are correct. My phone is a SPH-0710. Can you please port me over to where I am supposed to be?
Thank you for your help. This has been a frustrating experience, and it is reassuring to have someone take it seriously. I appreciate your taking your time to head me in the right direction.

I'm a Moto Atrix 4G and HD user. I know from development on the 4G, we could disable the wifi by not installing certain packages or flashing a kernel without the required lib/module files. I'm in the middle of fixing a friend's S2/Epic 4G touch and I saw this thread. I would think that something similar would be available here, but i am just starting out with this process of helping my friend out so I'm not sure what files really affect the wifi. I'm sure you could root the device and delete the files that enable wifi access, but I'd have to do some digging for that before i advise any further.
