[Q] My Tmo Defy Can not Update - Defy General

I recently got so many notifications about 3.6.360 update for U.S. Tmo Defy on my phone. I've tried to download and update. Nevertheless, the phone can't be updated because I replaced some files of swype before. Although it failed every time, the notification just pop out again and again.
So is there any way I can update it? or stop the notification from coming out again?!
Thanks buddies

May the search be with you next time; but yes, rename BlurUpdate.apk.

Or if you really want to update it, there is a stock T-Mobile nandroid backup in one of the forums here. I went that route, restored the bloatware I'd deleted, downloaded and installed the update, re-rooted, made my own nandroid backup, then deleted the bloatware again.

Stop ec05 update popup

I tryed to search. But I can't find any thing about stoping the ec05 update popup. My friends Epic is rooted/moded and iam not going to put a rom on his phone right now. As 4 my Epic. I just want to stop the popup also and wait for a ec05 rom some time in the next few weeks or so.
Any ideas about stoping the install update popup?

Yes, you can use an app like AutoStarts or Titanium Backup to freeze the SystemUpdater.apk
This will prevent the pop-ups. Or you can just uninstall the SystemUpdater.apk altogether.
O ya thanks man I should have thougt of that

I too have this problem. I get the annoying "install update" pop up like 20x a day on my epic running rooted EB13. I'd love to stop it so I used titanium backup to freeze "system updater" but it does not stop the popups! So I think the solution suggested above doesn't work for me.
(It does make the phone crash back to the launcher if I press "settings - about phone - check for updates" though.
So, any other ideas? I'd flash a new ROM but I'm too lazy to restore all my apps and data. I'm waiting for a stable gingerbread ROM instead.
(Side note: new users can't post more than once every 5min on XDA. That's understandable, but frustrating that it applies to *editing* one's posts too...as I'm sitting here with typos I can't fix for another 4minutes. Oh well)

Alas, that was the first thing I tried. No such luck. It attempts to install....fails, I reboot. And then get the message again within minutes. I also tried deleting the update.zip file which was at the root of the SD card. This is maddening... sometimes it till pop up every 5 minutes (though it sometimes leaves me alone for hours too)
Other ideas?

Ahhh, not a bad idea. I guess I could just flash *that* and keep all my setting/apps huh? I've never flashed anything other than a complete ROM (via clockwork). Honestly, as a newb, I'm not sure how to do that. I shall commence to Googling (unless you can point me to how?) That is, sir.

Huh that's strange I don't know then. Sorry bud. Only other thing is to odin to ec05 completly.
Edit: what u can do is do a back up go into the development section look for rerfs. What that will do is flash u back to a stock ec05 rom with cwm2.x.x.x then u boot up then u can flas cwm3.0.0.6 boot back up power down. Then boot into cwm let it reconvert to ext4 then do a restore of ur curent set up. And make sure u flash a kernel afther that and ur good to go.

You lost me with those later Instructions. My understanding is if I do a nandroid restore, I would wipe out my upgrade in the first place. To be clear...I did a nandroid backup of my now hybrid EB13 w/ EC05 modem system. If I then ODIN'd to full stock EC05 I would have to wipe my system of apps and data right? Then if I tried to restore the nandroid backup, it would undo what I ODIN'd and restore my eb13/ec05 hybrid setup yes?
In any case, back to the original issue, just for fun I tried to use CWM to install the update.zip the popup notification said it had downloaded (which I'd manually removed via astro file manager). This triggered a file not found error and it automatically wiped the dalvik-cache (whatever that is). I rebooted and... no upgrade message! (At least not for 15 minutes). Maybe that worked?

It appears to be fixed as I haven't gotten the pop-up all day long! I'm not sure which action resolved it (or perhaps both)
1. Flashed modem from EB13 to EC05
2. Attempted to install update from a .zip that I'd removed in CWM which triggered erasing the dalvik cache.
Anyway, now dispensing thanks for your help!

I've seen people mention using titanium backup to freeze the device manager or updater app. Something to that effect.

thanks but i don't have a clue what that means.
i installed Kies on my pc to try and find the download and "push" it through with Odin, but Kies tells me my firmware is good.
i have NO idea where to dl the newest OTA from T-Mobile and then i'd have NO idea how to push it with Odin.
help, someone????
Titanium backup is an app from the market. With it you can uninstall system apps, or simply "freeze" them, meaning they are still there but no longer allowed to run.
"Device management" is the system app that's notifying you of the available ota update.
So, to answer your original question, download titanium backup and use it to freeze device management in order to get rid of the ota notification.
All this assumes of course that you are rooted and running a custom ROM. If you aren't on a custom ROM, then I wouldn't understand your wanting to avoid the update, as it appears it doesn't affect your ability to root, and may not even unroot your device.

i wasn't trying to avoid it, i was originally trying to install it, but Clockwork wouldn't let me; a couple people in here tried to offer 'halfway' help, but stopped answering my questions, so i mainly just wanted to get rid of the nag, since the mod i flashed got me to 2.3.6 anyway.
turns out that Perfect Backup let me clear the Device Mgmt data, and that got rid of the nag. so i didn't have to pay for Titanium Backup (can't freeze stuff unless you pay for it).
so the resolution is that once i'd flashed to 2.3.6 the OTA was just in some kind of cache, i guess, and all i had to do was clear it.

i just went through the exact same problem. go get Deodexed KL1 (i think it's a stock ROM) and it'll do what the new update is going to do, flash you to 2.3.6.
flash the modem, too, with Odin (KL1 modem) and then find your Device Management 10.* and Clear the Data using Perfect Backup (free).
i was unable to get rid of that nag/notification until i did that.
there may be other ways of Clearing the Data for Device Mgmt - maybe in App Manager. In any case, when i cleared the data the nag was gone.

Flash Mr X's deodexed stock rom. the rom your device downloaded is designed to work with your phones stock recovery and not with clockwork mod. X's rom works with CWM.

[Q] Stop OTA for Samsung GS 2 on T-Mobile
Hello!
My wife has a rooted GS 2 with the stock ROM from TMO. I am concerned that the new OTA (T989VUVKL1)might break her root functionality, cause repeated update notification, or cause her phone to no longer work. Does anyone know the app or file I need to freeze or delete to stop the OTA from happening? At this point she is also getting the notification to update (eek!) At some point I will want to upgrade the ROM to the newest one assuming I can keep root access. Thank you for all your help and support!

Though the question in this thread itself has been asked over a million times I guess, may I also ask our masters one question:
So I used Titanium Backup Pro to Integrate Update into ROM of some system apps. Will I have to restore all the original apps in their original version to have a successful OTA update?
PS, I backed up the entire system/apps folder, so no problem with that. Also, I don't have problems with setting the permissions back with Root Explorer.
Thanks in advance!

Help!!!!!! Stock Root, Now No Status Bar, Also Cant.....

Hey XDA friends...seriously over my head noob here, I performed the Odin One Click stock root posted on You Tube by QbKing last week. Maybe two days ago, I lost my status/notification bar as well as the ability to answer phone calls. i can make them tho. Also, my home screen icons are dissappering randomly (possibly only at reboot, I'll have to check on that). This all occurred it seems, when Titanium B/U prompted me to save certain apps to SD. Please help me and i will promise not to ever again take you alls training and long hours learning your craft lighty again! Thx.
Did you keep your data? If so the best way is a totally clean install. Give it another shot.
Thanks
I did in fact do a "save data root", and I'm embarrassed to say, how might I go about performing a clean install, and would I have root privileges after, and finally, any tips or advice on how one might avoid this type of thing in the future? Thank you for taking some of your time to guide the blind and aimless

re download the one click, making sure it is ff18 or el29 depending on whether you want gb or ics, then reflash it in odin using the same video as a guide. Weird you lost that status bar though, usually it won't boot if you had a bad download. I suspect with titanium backup you restored a gingerbread launcher on an ics rom or vice versa. Avoid restoring apps from titanium unless you know what you are doing would be my advice.

Thx for that info cuz I was doing just that.... attempting to restore certain back ups, one being the stock launcher. So are you suggesting a complete wipe and then download and reflash the one click? Honestly, the reason I orginally decided on the root option is sorta of dumb I suppose. I was sure that my ex had installed spyware on my phone and saw root as the only viable option for discovery, I actually like the stock rom and initially really liked the stock w/root. Obiviously I have a lot to learn...and express my genuine appreciation for knowlegdeable people such as yourself for helping me pull my head out my ass inch by inch.:

Also if you have access to a wifi connection or good 4g speeds I would recommend downloading all of your apps again and truly starting from scratch. It should take about an hour to do it all assuming you dont have hundreds of apps.
Just sync your phone now, do the one click, after boot update profile and prl then sign into google account and resync then start setting up apps. This is when you decide if you really need all the crap you previously had on your phone.

The link I posted will give you stock rooted ICS. Flashing through odin isn't very dangerous as long as you don't touch your phone while doing it and only flash the file I linked to. And don't restore any titanium backup apps this time unless you can differentiate system apps from store apps.

With restoring your apps. In titanium back up, hit restore missing apps. Then before you hit restore make sure restore only apps not apps+data. This way its only the apps you have downloaded and they are fresh.

It sounds to me like when you used TiBu to move apps to SD you accidently moved system apps including the systemui.apk and dialer and/or contacts possibly. When moving apps to SD thru TiBu never move apks in red, also never restore those apps or their data if you switch to a different rom version

[Q] Missing Files on Nandroid 4.1.1 Backup

Hey everyone,
So like many users on this forum, I was a moron and decided to try out the 4.3 update which upgraded my baseband to I747UCUEMJB. Realizing my mistake and not particularly happy with 4.3, I remembered I had made a nandroid backup from 4.1.1 on an extSD. Everything went smoothly as usual when I restored from the Nandroid backup.
My problem now is prior to making the backup, I tinkered with the rom using TiBu to eliminate bloatware. Now my camera isn't working and I can't Odin back to a stock 4.1.1 build because the baseband's don't match.
Am I screwed or can someone provide me an alternative? I have the 4.3 update still which I can flash so if that's my alternative that's what I'll have to do.
Did you delete the apps with tibu or just freeze them? I personally never delete bloat I only freeze it. In case I have problems like yours.
If you deleted them I would flash a 4.3 rom to get back to where you have a useable phone.

Thank you for your response. It confirmed what I already kind of knew but I figured I'd ask in case someone knew something I didn't.
