[Q] nooby question - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Im using HTC DESIRE for some time ebout 3 months,
i desided that i want to upgrade my HTC to 2.2 from 2.1 but for that i need to inlock my HTC.
i tried to faind on forms how to do it, with no luck
any 1 plz can expalin or direct me on forum how i unlock my phone
ty

You mean root? Here is the thread.
For SIM unlock here.

if you have unbranded phone just go to settings/about phone/software-update
it will update automaticly

htc provides the update automatically when you check for updates from your phone.
if you do not intend to root, it should be enough

Well the automatic update wont update my phone to 2.2 so i have to root it
hope ill get it right

Really no need to root, if it wont update over the air then you need to check your firmware and your branding as some providers such as orange will hold back firmware updates

rooting is only needed if you want custom made roms, for official updates from your provider go ask them.

Rooting + costum roms have some advantages... no more low internal memory, thanks to app2ext (that's why I rooted)

Hero update Iminent, but now if you have ROOT!

Check out this link:

Appears as though HTC are gonna address the lagginess expereinced by many (including myself) with an OTA update.
Those with root like me will not get the OTA update as ive read the firmware wont update on rooted phones. Im wondering whether people will put their chef hats on with the new update to create a rom based on it?
You could restore a backup from a point where you had not rooted your phone yet
It basically unroots itself that way.

That link makes no mention whatsoever that the update will be OTA - in fact, it says:
“HTC will be providing a software update for the HTC Hero, which will be available via the HTC website in the coming weeks.” HTC statement

Via the website almost certainly means download and update manually. Being rooted shouldn't stop you applying the update, though you will probably lose root in the process.
Note that Google pushed OTA updates out for the G1, and the reason they didn't work on most rooted phones was because the procedure used to root the phone specifically switched off the OTA functionality to avoid the phone getting an update and losing root.
Regards,
Dave
It was confirmed prior to release that the Hero would be incapable of receiving OTA updates.
Ok thats useful information. We can just hope now that the update will get rid of the lag.
Someone needs to change the thread topic to
Hero update Iminent, but noT if you have ROOT!

I thought it was only OTA updates that rooted phones couldn't recieve.

correct me if i am wrong but even if you back up with nandroid before rooting , running the backup doesnt unroot your phone.
anyway, it is not a problem. all u have to do is just to flash the stock rom posted on this thread and then run the update if this is the case .
I don't think ROOTING is the problem. I think that some people, in the process of rooting, end up changing the recovery.img with test keys which the update may check against and prevent the update.
I updated mine using ADB and used fastboot, so I don't think I actually changed the recovery.img, so future updates will just see my phone as a 'normal' unbranded device (albeit with Superuser.apk and su.apk, and the HTC CIME)
After OTA update, We will get the Custom rom of Hero soon (Like in G1)

Quick Root Question for a T-Mobile(uk) Hero

Hi Guys,
I am eager to try the 2.1 for my Hero which has had some 3G issues due to T-Mobile Network issue which still has no sign of being fixed.
Anyhow, my question is, if I made gold card and rooted my Stock Hero to a rooted 2.1 version, when the official one is finally released, can I go back to a stock 2.1 again?
Really want to try out the 2.1 but well over another month it seems to go on T-mobile.
yes
Yes, but it will prob unroot it,
Hi, If you root and install a custom 2.1 rom, when you update to the official t-mobile ROM, you WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ROOT AGAIN.
So be careful as custom roms often get things (just like the 2.1) a lot earlier than official upgrades. Especially from t-mobile as they seem to take ages before releasing them . Hope this helps.

This is still assumed, the root access may still be there through the old methods. But we don't know until it is released. I would let someone else test it first.

HTC Desire on Orange - Debranding?!

Hi
Apologies for this post if it's been done many times before but I've been digging around now for hours and keep finding conflicting advice on problems I will run into so I just need someone to clarify if it's possible and what I need to do to ensure I don't loose wifi access or brick my phone or anything like that....
I bought a HTC Desire locked to Orange (UK) yesterday and I would like to get it unlocked and debranded. The unlocking part should not be a prob as I'll just buy a code from somewhere (or thats the hope anyhow) but when it comes to reflashing to debrand I keep coming across posts about wifi issues or OTA updates making progs force close, thus the Desire becoming unstable.
All I want to know is..... How do I get rid of all the Orange crap and go to a generic HTC Desire ROM so it would be like I bought a retail Desire? Is this possible without messing up my phone?? I'm currently on 02 (UK) but also bought an Orange PAYG sim just incase things get overly complicated. I would like to stick with my 02 sim but don't want to run into any probs with my phone, and if needs be I could switch over to Orange but that would be my last resort. I would also like to get rid of the Orange flash screen and the Orange apps that came preinstalled on my phone. Some posts say it's possible, some posts say I will have issues with the radio version, some posts say I will loose wifi and the Desire will turn unstable (lots of force closed prompts). If I did manage to go back to the retail Desire ROM, would I then run into probs with OTA updates?
Sorry if this question is proper nooby, but in truth that's exactly what I am and I'm getting totally lost!! After hours of digging I thought I'd just post this up and see if someone can clarify the situation before I dig in and start flashing. Better to be safe than sorry and all that.
Any help would be appreciated!!
With an orange branded desire, you'll definitely have to unlock it - i did with mine, although i discovered that after i'd flashed it
the only think i would advise you to do is to read up on the various rom threads - the first couple of posts in each thread will tell you what each rom does and will invariably give you a couple of screenshots as well.
that way you can decide which one you want in the firsts instance. then i'd skip to the end of the thread and read back a few pages from that point, so you'll get an idea of what problems (if any) people are still having.
it really comes down to personal preference and taking a chance - most, if not all of the roms on here are working and stable and won't really give you many problems.
Yea its an eyesore to say the least is that filthy orange branding
get it debranded first using a goldcard and flashed with rooted generic rom
then purchase sim unlock code to use your o2.
then update and mod to your hearts "desire"
Firstly, thanks for your quick replies! I had a feeling this was going to be a bit of a mission!!
Ok, so say I've unlocked and unbranded my phone. What happens with OTA updates from there on in? Is it just a case of doing them manually and switching off auto OTA? I read somewhere that by flashing with a rooted ROM it will block OTA from updating to prevent the phone getting locked or becoming unstable, is that right?
Also, this may be a stupid question but if it's flashed to a generic HTC ROM then where does it contact for the updates? I was figuring as soon as I'd gotten rid of the Orange fw that it would no longer be looking for the Orange'd ROM update but after reading this doesn't seem to be the case?
Please forgive me if I'm being ignorant, I've gone from a Nokia 1600 (lol) to a HTC Desire and trying to get my head around it all!!
I would like to know too, I have just bought a Orange branded desire.
1. Do I unlock the phone 1st, ie. get an unlock code from orange.
2. do I then flash the generic firmware.
3. Is the sim lock stored in the radio part of the firmware?
I have unbranded/unlocked nokia n80`s and htc tync`s in the past, but I need to swat up on this linux stuff.
Any usefull advice welcomed, in the mean while I`ll keep reading
The OTA updates will become completely unecessary because you'll be using a custom rom - the developer of that rom will be the one releasing the updates, so all you'll have to do is to re-flash each updated version.

Well what I did was to root the phone first, then flash the radio and then a rom. the new radio is what caused the simlock, so it was at that point i had to buy an unlock code. all works completely fine now.

So can the simlock be removed by flashing a simfree radio rom??? I`m pretty sure this is what i did on an old tync to remove simlock.....but this was some time ago
you say the radio Rom you flashed caused the simlock, did you not have to supply the network provider as well as the IMIE to get the unlock code? or was this a generic Radio rom?
My wife has just got a htc desire HD on 3 and that is branded.
I have got a Samsung Galaxy S and i have unbranded that down loading a Manufacture Rom and that updates as normal.
Is there some software like odin for the Htc and were like samfirmware.com can i down load a Manufactures rom.
she went for this phone cos of the spec and she does not like my Samsung i was hoping the Htc community would be the same it is so easy to do and Samsung service centres checked my firmware and it was fine.
Most people just want there phone as Htc intended it to be
HTC finally launched their Gingerbread update (2.3.3) for Desire. I am using a Desire (telstra locked Android 2.1), downloaded the new update from the official website HTC website and now i have a completely unbranded HTC Desire with 2.3.3... NO GOLDCARD OR ROOT REQUIRED.

2.1 unrevoked-rooted tmo -> unchanged 2.2 HOW?

this is my second thread about this issue, and PLEASE don't answer if you don't know how i could do this. i DON'T want a rooted/modded whatsoever 2.2, just the update that came today.
i guess my best bet would be flashing a htc europe generic rom and get the OTA, but how do i do that?
If your phone is from a network provider then it will more than likely need rooting even if you just want to flash it with a generic HTC ROM.
If it was purchased SIM free then it should already have a generic ROM and it will just be a matter of time before you get the OTA update.
Have you tried manually chacking for an update on the phone?

Here's how
I'm Rooted and I still want the official update after reading the warning.
1) Make a goldcard using this guide (For Desire too)
2) Download this
3) Double click it and follow the instructions.
4) When the update is ready to be pushed out, you will get a notification.
(taken from the Official foyo update thread....please search or read before making threads like this)

BTW, if you do this you will not be able to unroot again untill a new root is found which could take weeks, or could never happen. You loose the ability to install custom roms, or non sense roms.
@ shetlander: it IS rooted, but i'm not able to flash generic, it simply doesn't work
@jedipottsy: i don't have a micro SD card available, but as i said, the phone IS rooted, so i there any way to do it without one? maybe a dump of a generic firmware instead of a ruu.exe?
edit: i forgot to mention, i had a leaked 2.2 build flashed before, but then flashed back to t-mobile rom. what doesn't work ist the flash to htc europe generic

nope, need an sdcard, can't flash an official over an unofficial, you need sd to restore to an older official.

well i was able to got to a defrost build and back to stock without goldcard, i don't see why a htc generic can't function (
cant see the advantage of using the official, you loose too much for little gain

there is full 2.2 with extras, or plain with root, much easier to install and you dont loose root
thx jedi, i am actually flahshing the thingy with busybox(whatever that does), there's no way i'm gonna miss teeter ^^

Download this rom:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.zip
change the name to PB99IMG and put it on your gold card, boot into recovery and select fastboot, it will install the generic 1.21 rom, then when you check for updates the froyo update will be there, btw doing this wipes everything on your phone. Worked for me although I didn't install the froyo update as I am scared of the bootloader.

[Q] OTA update clarification

Checking the forum for the pass 2 days but can't really get satisfaction answer:
I have just unlock my bootloader but not yet rooted.
I would prefer to have the standard ROM instead of the customer ROM at this moment, question below:
a) If I do not rooted my phone, do I able to update through OTA as normal? (my ROM still on 1.28 and wish to wait for the 1.29 to solve the SD card missing issue). Do I need to relock it back first?
b) If I decided to rooted my phone, can I still get the full update (including Radio.....?) Do I must use the RUU file to do the update.
Sorry if above question seems stupid as I'm totally new to Android system.
