Battery Popup - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not rushing or begging, obviously I am aware that EB13 has only been around for a short period of time. I saw this mentioned once in one specific update file thread, but thought it could use its own thread (and I'll update this original post when applicable).
If any super awesomely capable person could make a flashable zip file that kills the battery full popup (I believe this has always been done in services.jar) in EB13 ROMs (I happen to be running the stock EB13 via using Samsung's Windows tool) it would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your time and effort.

It will be done you need to give the devs some time. Everything give seen and been use to will be ported. No need for request.

Fantastic..... I've noticed most themes seem to still be compatible. Has the framework changed much? We need to get Samsung to do a release without TW and make our lives SO MUCH easier.

I doubt it's changed much, but many themes update apps as well. Speaking of framework, I found some not-so-goodies in framework.jar...
One step closer to killing Carrier IQ completely.

Carrier IQ is Sprint spyware that logs data on just about everything you do with the phone, as well as some location data, and signal data. It's been around since Eclair, and since the days when the Moment was new.
ACS - specifically DevinXtreme and I - were the first to begin removing it, at the kernel level.
And I've just removed more.
Code:
java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to instantiate service com.carrieriq.iqagent.service.IQService: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.carrieriq.iqagent.service.IQService in loader dalvik.system.PathClassLoader[.]
*sniffs* It's... it's beautiful...
(Boot is fine - no negative side effects. The Carrier IQ service is now DEAD!)

Since Carrier IQ isn't monitoring/sending data has it's removal had a noticeable battery difference?

Kernel level optimization is the specific reason why I'm holding out on EB13.... DK28 is quite buggy, but with limited time I'm biding it so that when I do have time to burn flashing this phone I'm going to be doing it with the EB13 ACS build and the successor to Xtreme kernel

Help me revert to a pre-froyo rom

Hey guys. i've had it with Froyo. i have a list of complaints, but that kind of post has been done too many times.
basically i'm wondering how to "downgrade" back to a 2.1 rom. i started with OMJ's 2.1 "eclair" rom and now i'm running his 2.2 froyoized rom. i'd like to revert back to the latter. can someone clue me in on how best to accomplish this?
thanks!
I should expect it to be as simple as clearing data/cache/davlik and flashing the rom you want to use.
Don't think you can but I'm not 100% sure Idk what problems ur having but 2.2. Has been a beast for me

That's what I assumed. i just wanted to make sure before i screw something up.
@SporkMan, basically it seems slower, the battery life is awful and recently, i've noticed the phone itself is HOTTER. i carry it in a holster on my belt and this morning(while in court) i had it on airplane mode without GPS, wifi, etc on and it went from 85% battery to 42% batter in less then two hours and was hotter then it gets when i charge it off the wall adapter. i've NEVER gotten that bad of battery life. not even before i rooted it. thats just unacceptable.
plus, i haven't seen the talked-about speed gains in the applications, so it doesn't really provide me with anything new(correction, there is one thing i absolutely LOVE and that is the mass update in the Market. that just rules!)

you'll probably get a bunch of suggested roms to try, but my vote goes to BakedSnack and his Bkaed1 kernel. Hero tweaks the kernels to give killer battery - I've been raving about it ever since I switched over. I used to have to struggle to get over 13 hours battery - now I get over 20, without setcpu. You should nand and try it. If you don't like it, you can always nand back.

right! forgot he fixed that when he hit version 4 - I stopped using his kernel around 3.7ish when i went with Baked1. Sorry for the mis-info!
I would have to agree with the others. I use Fresh 3.1.0.1 and run Netarchy's 4.0.2 kernel, and my phone has never been faster, smoother, nor have I ever had better battery life as I do now. I took my phone off of the charger at 8:00 AM today, surfed the net, answered a few phone calls, did emails and messages for a total screen on time of about two hours so far. I also did 15 minutes of FM radio, and half hour of streaming Pandora on the way to work, and my battery is at 76% at 2:00 PM.
The other thing you might consider is that, it wouldn't surprise me if in a few months, aps compatible with the evo running 2.1 won't even show up for you in the market any more. I may be wrong, but something to consider.

Thanks! the part i'm MOST confused about is when i download the latest Baked Snack rom from that thread in development i only get a 318kb file. every other rom i've downloaded has been 125mb +. i don't really know what thats about
If you're talking about 1.2.5, the reason its so small is because its not a Rom. Check my link again. You have to wipe and flash 1.2 first, then 1.2.5 over that without wiping, unless you want the themed version (which I highly recommend) in which case you wipe, flash 1.2, then 1.2 themed without wiping, then 1.2.5 themed without wiping. It sounds like more of a pita than it is, and its worth it in the end.

No unfortunately it doesn't. Screenshots i'm working on (it saves them all in PNG which the site won't recognize).
An overclock kernel is being worked on, the base of this is the standard kernel. We do have one working but it's not ready for release yet.
So they will be up soon.
make sure he has the custom recovery menu. It won't flash properly without it. We worked a few days on that as well.

By custom recovery, do you mean the one in the stickied post or CWM?
Biggest thing is the speed of the default device, I'll keep an eye here and get serious when the OC kernel is ready.... I think I'll need a pretty compelling argument to get him to root. Thank you for all your hard work in this area.

Just curious since I didn't see any screenshots (he hasn't given me the nod yet, either) What kind of overclocks have you gotten and how is your battery life?
EDIT: Nevermind, I just saw it on the blog (read past it at first). 850 MHz? That's almost a 50% OC! The battery life at that speed question still remains. Also, don't see the FAQ link, or is it not up yet? Thanks a bundle. I've gotten fairly proficient with things on my Inspire, but the Optimus looks to be a slightly different monster.

Do EG22 and EH06 ROMs have Carrier IQ?

Hey guys,
So I've been noticing that the EC05 roms like to advertise being ciq free, but the newer Eg22 and EH06 roms don't seem to say anything about removing said spy software. Is it safe to assume that these roms are ciq free, or should I just stick with EC05 if I want my privacy?...

CIQ is disabled by default. The real worry is that in future devices it may not be. That said, there is a great amount of effort towards removing it unlikely to be applied towards gb until we have an official release.

Why the concern if it is disabled?
After all, you can jump ship back to a non-CIQ ROM if it ever gets turned on, but in the meantime, you could enjoy the latest builds w/o any worries

Yup. Nobody'll ever see that data (except a bored IT guy who'd get fired if he admitted to looking) unless you actually do something illegal which requires it to be reviewed. Or a terrorist. Or you pissed off a fed.
But I doubt anyone will see the data before it's deleted after however long they have to keep it.
The way I understand it, the fact that it is "off" in current ROMS is very misleading.
The LOCAL logging is turned off, but the system is still very much active doing what Sprint intends it to do and is most assuredly not under the control of the owner of the phone.
That is simply not acceptable. I wish the press would get hold of that information and shame the company into removing it. This type of [email protected] needs to be halted... there needs to be some type of consumer protection that slaps companies that lock us out of our own electronics and put software in that allows control without our acceptance or acknowledgement. People just simply do not get pissed off enough about it and the lack of uproar allows it to keep going.

I don't much mind GOOGLE knowing everything about me. At least they are upfront about that fact. But, as I recall, CIQ is a SPRINT app, and SPRINT has kept CIQ's existence on the down low. It's bad enough that they behave as if my phone is still their property such that they reserve the right/ability to watch what I do, I don't like that they are so secretive about it.
If they're so secretive about this, who knows what OTHER things they've got on the backburners, eh?
CIQ was a drain on battery and resources. Spyware? Maybe. But I don't know that I want out on my phone even if it isn't. AOSP is the best.

Continuum Lagfix

While poking and prodding around I found this one click ex2 lagfix for the I9000 and also the Fascinate.. I tried it and it works for our Continuum's also.
Before Lagfix
Quadrant - 1028
After Lagfix
Quadrant - 1770
Antutu Benchmark - 3140
I did not have a chance to test Antutu before I did the lagfix.
Either way here is the link to the file. Make sure you have root, Sammy USB Drivers, ADB, and the latest version of Busybox installed. Turn on USB Debugging and plug your phone into your computer. Unzip the file and double click on 'Lagfixme.bat'.
Follow the onscreen instructions.

You can't afford for your things to get corrupted? Weirdo. Real world performance between EXT4 and EXT2 is barely noticeable if at all, for the everyman this is probably your best bet.

However I'm not seeing the 2200's that the Fascinate peeps are seeing. Also removing the lagfix got me stuck in a boot loop that I fixed with a nandroid backup. Just an FYI.

the oclf lagfix is ancient history and is almost entirely placebo
the sgs world moved on from it by october of last year, fwiw
yes it will give you awesome benchmarks, but real world performance is extremely minimal at best (yes i say this from experience)
Considering development for this phone is nonexistant I'll take whatever excitement I can get... <3 the trolls..

So is there a up to date real world lagfix? Back on dl17 I had great config but was using so many things (oclf,akmo,cachemate,v6supercharger) I cant remember what made the difference....
sent from my XDA phone - its more than a continuum
dont use the super charger scripts its garbage all that is, is a placebo affect the truth is every phone has different memory settings so u cant make a universal one ive seen that done over and over but none of them has ever worked.

i wasnt trolling the thread, i was stating the obvious...oclf is not used on any sgs phone for the last 10 months (at least) and it was never much more than a quadrant epeen fix

lmao nitsuji is very well know... i dont think theres a single troll in these forums with 1500 posts... but he speaks the truth.. quadrant is a horrible benchmark app.. and ROCLF just makes it skip multiple steps making your phone think its preforming better
EDIT: 3000 post 1500 thanks... you dirty troll

As for the memory issues, the default for the Continuum is much higher than many of the other phones. I put together a little "How To" specifically for the Continuum. Just be careful, because I have seen issues with background apps, that I want to keep running, closed by Android. You really have to play with the numbers to see what works best for you. If anyone wants help with this, let me know.

Where is the how to? I'll give it a shot. BTW, did the zipalign help at all? I know it did me, but your issues seemed a little more severe.

It's in my OP here: FIXED! - Froyo ROM "closing" the background apps.
Keep in mind YMMV, I would adjust the settings using AMM (Auto Memory Manager) from the market. Because of the aforementioned problems (yes zipalign helped a little bit), and all the friggin' apps I installed and use, I have actually gone back to the default memory settings. I'll start playing with them again starting this weekend. As a System Administrator, I just can't leave well enough alone... My wife doesn't like it when I mess with my phone because I grumble so much when the thing hoses up... It's my fault, I know... But...

Best ICS Rom

Look Im seeing A LOT of people complaining about the new update, I want to know which ROM is the best to use without the problems, I prefer to use ODIN and was wondering if the one click full restore for FF18 is having those problems or should I just wait for them to fix this problem before doing a system restore. I just got my phone back from samsung and was waiting to root for the update to come out but if there is problems with it I just prefer to wait.
Just do the one click full restore ff18. There is absolutely nothing wrong with ICS. Don't let anyone tell you there is.

+1 the ICS is fine. It is different and I think that is causing most of the issues for people.
tFF18 from Agat

I used the stock leaks for quite a while, then tried out the tFF18 ROM (plus his custom kernal) from Agat. It seems like my battery life may have dropped slightly but overall loving it. There is nothing wrong with stock FF18, it is great also. When I upgraded to tFF18 I didn't wipe the phone and all my apps / settings worked fine still, because it's based on the stock ROM.
Gingerbread is definitely smoother as far as scrolling goes...
Other than that, the improvements in ICS seem to be to my liking. Google is definitely taking after cyanogen and putting in some stuff that more people want to see on the greatest OS Android!

ICS
yeah dude, dont let anyione tell you that you get ****ty battery life, scrolling is like a crazy whore running after crack, the buttons sometimes dont work, the settings crash, facebook doesnt sync, exchange has problems. also
* Roaming Guard now ignores settings and alerts you continuously to improve your awareness.
* Adds a cool stuttering effect to chrome browser just in case you missed it the first time.
* Allows you to better focus on your phone while running or driving by not taking commands from a Bluetooth headphone set while the screen is of.
* Allows you to scroll from top to bottom of a list in .02 seconds even when you dont mean to for faster navigation.
* And many more!
It's all a small base of about 60% of the users that are experiencing this. And even thou our devs are great its hard to make a diamond out of ****.
Just saying FF18 should have just been a leak. Nothing more. There's a lot of really cool features ICS brings, but all the ICS roms that are there now are just themed versions of stock with different launchers. Just saying... 14 roms with all different colors... wtf?
This update, of course, does nothing to fix Sprint's horrid network. So, if you have a crumby data connection now you'll have one after as well =)

Just because you have issues does not mean there are issues. I can have a ferrari that does not run right, that does not mean that ferrari's are bad. I sync exchange with no issues, never had bad battery, and settings do not crash. I would check your own setup and not blame ICS.

Stock does not really mean anything, It could be apps your running in the background. I have used the leaks since day 1 and have my own ROM, and the only one I can say is an issue is scrolling.
http://community.sprint.com/baw/com...nes-and-devices/samsung/samsung_epic_4g_touch - check this **** out
see how applauded the update is.
Do you even know what you are talking about? Obviously not. Had you actually installed one of the '14 different colors' you would realize there are significant differences between custom roms. These devs spend vast amounts of time making these roms, various tweaks for battery life and performance , custom interfaces, and a ton of added features you will not see on any stock device. There is a hell of a lot more to it than choosing that perfect shade of blue. Don't discredit others hard work when you obviously have not made the slightest effort to educate yourself beyond looking at a couple of screen shots.
To answer the OP most of the roms are good, try them for yourself everybody has a different style. Start with a few of the Team Venum roms and go from there.
OP, if i were u, try out a few cuatom ics roms to see how u feel about them. I myself tried 2 - supernova and blu kuban. I ditched supernova bc it was laggy and slower than calkulin's v3.0 gb rom. But it was stable for me. I ditched blu kuban bc it wouldnt let kakaotalk work correctly and some apps would crash a few times. Otherwise, i loved it and wished i could've kept it on my phone. For now, i'm back with calkulin and just waiting for an ics setup that can meet and/or exceed the calkulin 3.0.

did you just get mad? chill out bro. and as i said before is not the devs fault. It's hard to make the ff18 into anything slightly functional, sprint just threw **** at us.
I'm working on a rom with a dev right now, i haven't released a rom since the days of the diamond, so i wanna test it all the way. I'm leaving the rest to the public.

It is not hard and FF18 is not crap. Just my opinion.
FF18 plays nice on some devices, bad for other devices since the FF builds. I'm running the calk 1.6 ICS ROM with agats custom kernel and I honestly couldn't be any happier... I can keep my captive button lights on and haptic feedback on. It's a dream. On stock ff18 or custom ROMs, it all goes wrong out of no where with issues like captive buttons not working sometimes unless I turn off screen and on or hit the vol button. I guess its a 50/50 chance.
I haven't tried the blu k ROM simply because it is over themed for my usage... maybe if there was a non themed version I would.
I just find it funny people have been begging for ics since forever.. Now it's here and people like "aww man f*ck ics.. It's not all that"... Don't let anybody steer you from going to ICS.. I was using GB since forever and like ics better &haven't had bad battery life.. Actually been better... People Also need to take in consideration what they run and have more realistic standards for battery life... It may take a while to find a set up you like but it's possible

I love Calks 1.6 ICS ROM with agats new kernel built from source sadly a game I love isn't that friendly with ICS so I might go back to Blazer 4.1 till some game devs learn to update their games for new OS updates lol

I'm using the blu kuban rom.. I love the rom, all the features, battery life, and stability.. He put a lot of attention and hard work into the rom & supports it constantly...My only regret is not trying it sooner but I was still a noob and stock on GB (haven't had this phone long)
