How to turn off 3G and just run 2G ? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Was wondering for battery saving ideas, if I am going to be using the phone for business during the weekday, is it possible to turn off 3G ? Where is that setting ?
I am running Myn's RLS 5, with "netarchy-toastmod" Kernel, as well as the usual background crap turned off. Just trying to get some longer battery life.
Today was a good day, had it unplugged for 8 hours, and was at 35% battery left, after a heavy business day of 40+ phone calls, 25 texts, a dozen e-mails, and surfing the net every hour. I never got that much when I was stock before this ROM and Kernel. But would still like more if I can turn off 3G somehow ?

if im at the college or a low service area, ill just touch the mobile data widget to disable 3G. still allows for text messages and calls, so not a huge deal. and it saves on battery life.

Myns warm two point two rom has it in the notification bar.

hmm, on my picture of my notification bar, I do not see any up/down arrows on Myn's RLS 5 ?

CDMA is not like GSM. Switching from 3G (EV-DO) to 2G (1x) will not save you battery.

Ahhh you have to edit the widget.txt file in system. Change the 4gtoggle to MobileData with the caps. Use root explorer to edit the file then reboot. System/customize/widget.txt

Is there another way to toggle on/off the mobile data ? What does that icon look like ?

There are a number of ways:
1) Hold the power button -> Hit Mobile Data.
2) Change the 4G (or any other notification toggle) to MobileData in widget.txt as stated a few posts above.
3) Install JuiceDefender to have it done automatically when you're not using the phone.

Just edit the widget.txt and reboot it will be simple. Even I could do it lol.

You can also just go into Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks and uncheck Mobile Networks or Mobile data/connections or whatever it was called. (Sorry on CM7 atm)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877003
That explains how to add it to your power notifications bar.
But if you have Ultimate Juice, set it so it does it for you.

You mean "Always On Mobile Data". And yes, Ultimate Juice will do it for you.

I have an app in the market called Network Switch. It allows Sense ROMs to switch to 2g only or 3g only. However, I can't find any data that it will save battery.

Dude I can see in the picture you are already running juice defender! Just go into the jd settings and set it to automatically enable/disable 3g. It will turn off data when your screen is off and trigger it when you light it up. You can also configure 2g/3g with it depending on your rom support.

seeing as you had a nice screeny i thought i'd reply in a screenshot too because i'm in a screenshot kinda mood untick the highlighted box
but yet you worked out how to flash a rom and change the background of the today screen but you couldnt work out how to remove the date! lol
That doesnt remove the time. Un-checking the date removes the date
C'mon guys...you all are incorrect.
The way to do this is as follows (sorry I dont have time for screen shots)
1) Goto Settings>>Advanced Config
2) Select 'Appearance' tab
3) Select the appropriate drop down from 'Shoe on title bar' label. I selected 'battery'...
After a soft reset, you will get want you want...

whew, it was starting to feel like howardforums there with all the misinformation and bad advice.
Guys! Stop bickering!
To remove the time from the very top bar of the Today screen, lookin the WIKI for registry edits (here's the page):
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Registry
and look for a section called "Show Time,Date, both or Battery on top bar at Today screen". This is the same edit that the Advanced Config mohitb272 mentioned, but this is the manual version if you haven't got theprogram installed.
To hide the date in the today plug-in (the one next to the clock under Start in your screenshot), follow GilesThaAlmighty's instructions earlier.
Sorted!

I did- I also read the instructions on the developer's site, but i still don't see the difference.
I either get "3g" or "1x" showing on my status bar depending on the data connection i have. So would pressing "data" just disable both 3g and 1x, whereas pressing "3g" only disables 3g, but not 1x data connection?
But if that's the case, wouldn't one want to have either one or the other turned on, not both?

How does this affect google talk and other instant messaging apps?
I know on iphone they stay connected in the cloud and send push notifications when you get a message
But android doesn't have push notifications right?
Does this mean I am disconnected every time juice defender disables data?
Pretty important for me

when data is off, i don't think you can get instant messages, or anything that requires data, so if you are addicted to your instant messenger, don't bother with juice defender. but for gmail and such, new mail will come through during the data windows. for instance, i have mine set to enable data for 1min every 15min.
during the times i'm using gchat, i just disable JD

Is there any apps for instant messenger that keep you logged in via the cloud and send you email notification when you get im?
Maybe I am missing something totally obvious, but in the video I thought he mentioned he was using an Evo, but after installing both JD and UJ on my Evo and messing around with some settings, I do not have a "3G" icon between the "Data" and "WiFi" icons like the phone in the video. app that turns off data on screen lock?

Hey all,
I tried searching but came up empty, is there an app that specifically turns off data when you turn your screen off or lock the phone? I read that juicedefender does this but was wondering if there was a app that is designed to turn off certain things when locking phone.
thanks!

Juice Defender ftw
I've been looking into this same issue. After looking around and getting some advice from another xda member, I went with juice defender which has been outstanding so far.
If you heavy, heavy usage, you won't really notice a difference. However, if you use your phone, set it down for a while, use it again, let it sleep... all throughout the day, you will notice a significant increase in battery life. The first day I installed it, I sent a text while I was at work and then set my phone down. I grabbed it almost 3 hours later for something and it had gone down 1%.

While JuiceDefender IS designed to save battery life and such, it is designed to do just that. Meaning in order to save battery life, it disables and enables certain connections when the screen is off/locked etc.

[APP] 'Data Lock' : unplug 3G while the screen is off

Hi
I'm not a developper but I created an app with the Tasker App Factory that unplug 3G one minute after you lock your screen. The one minute delay is here to prevent the phone plugging and unplugging at any time the screen goes off. During this delay, if you wake your device, the process will stop and begin again when you turn the screen off. When the screen is off, after the 1 minute delay, 3G is stopped while the phone is in your pocket to prevent battery drain
Once it is stopped, if you wake the device a new 5 second delay is started, for those who just want to check the clock , and then the 3G is plugged with a ''Data restarted'' toast
Note : Tasker IS NOT required to use this apk :victory:
Feel free to request any modification like the delay or the toast text, I'm here to share such things. And if it helped, don't forget the :good: button

cpu usage
Your app gave me a watchdog alert as it's using more than 50% CPU. This would counteract any benefits as eating CPU results in battery drain.
It also uses 15.3 mb of ram when its role is simple and in no way justifies the ram/CPU usage.
Going to try this as I am tired of manually switching to 2g all the time.

Verizon took out Battery Saver, here's Qualcomm's solution: Snapdragon™ BatteryGuru

I, and a few other users have noticed that Verizon decided to have HTC strip out their battery saver toggle on the Sense ROM (4.2.2) that ships on VZW's One.
Luckily, Qualcomm provides a standalone application which covers 90% of what the toggle does.
Snapdragon™ BatteryGuru
https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Xiam+Technologies+Limited,+a+Qualcomm+company
(personally, I haven't found the need to use it yet, but I figured it would help some people)
Thanks man, I was looking for that battery saver mode everywhere, but I guess this will do as well.
Thanks for this info. Anyone know if this is particular app will perform better from more generic battery extenders like Juice Defender?
According to the reviews all it does schedule syncing. Don't know how that is going to save battery...
Battery saver apps are a joke. The only thing I liked about power saver mode was that it cut the CPU frequency down and cut data off after a certain period of time. Other than that, if you need to save more just turn your brightness down, turn off bluetooth, use WiFi as much as possible, and use the phone less.

I normally agree - I realized the other day though, that I don't need background *push* email - but I'd like to have my phone "fetch" email every time I wake it up. Anyone know of anything like that?

Think about how often you "actually" need to have your emails and set it to that. For me, my Yahoo emails I don't need it to check but once hourly. But Gmail is push automatically so I won't mess with that. My corporate email defaulted to push but I often don't need it to constantly update and annoy me so I'm contemplating on 30 min intervals. Setting your emails to longer intervals should reduce that "email stress" that most people seem to endure these days.
The app has low power mode controls.
You can turn off mobile data during inactivity.
Some other features.
It basically gives you battery saver control on any Snapdragon based device.

It limits CPU, dims display and disables vibration feedback. Basically everything you can do yourself in stock and if you have a CPU app like SetCPU. Just a one click option that Verizon took out bc they hate battery life I guess idk.
Im running bonestock now, and the power saver has increased my battery life fairly significantly, i'll take that, because at first i wasnt impressed with the battery life, and i watched the ifixit tutorial on how to tear this phone apart to replace a battery, and i want nothing to do with that
