I can't figure out the "data" vs "3g" buttons- if i have data turned off, isn't that the same as 3g being turned off, at least on the Evo?

I did- I also read the instructions on the developer's site, but i still don't see the difference.
I either get "3g" or "1x" showing on my status bar depending on the data connection i have. So would pressing "data" just disable both 3g and 1x, whereas pressing "3g" only disables 3g, but not 1x data connection?
But if that's the case, wouldn't one want to have either one or the other turned on, not both?

How does this affect google talk and other instant messaging apps?
I know on iphone they stay connected in the cloud and send push notifications when you get a message
But android doesn't have push notifications right?
Does this mean I am disconnected every time juice defender disables data?
Pretty important for me

when data is off, i don't think you can get instant messages, or anything that requires data, so if you are addicted to your instant messenger, don't bother with juice defender. but for gmail and such, new mail will come through during the data windows. for instance, i have mine set to enable data for 1min every 15min.
during the times i'm using gchat, i just disable JD

Ah bummer but not a deal breaker
Is there any apps for instant messenger that keep you logged in via the cloud and send you email notification when you get im?

Maybe I am missing something totally obvious, but in the video I thought he mentioned he was using an Evo, but after installing both JD and UJ on my Evo and messing around with some settings, I do not have a "3G" icon between the "Data" and "WiFi" icons like the phone in the video. What gives / what am I not realizing? Thanks, all.

Yeah I had ultimate juice and didn't have 3g option only data option... Also it did not give me cpu options... I uninstalled ultimate juice really wanted thee cpu option..

How to turn off 3G and just run 2G ?

Was wondering for battery saving ideas, if I am going to be using the phone for business during the weekday, is it possible to turn off 3G ? Where is that setting ?
I am running Myn's RLS 5, with "netarchy-toastmod" Kernel, as well as the usual background crap turned off. Just trying to get some longer battery life.
Today was a good day, had it unplugged for 8 hours, and was at 35% battery left, after a heavy business day of 40+ phone calls, 25 texts, a dozen e-mails, and surfing the net every hour. I never got that much when I was stock before this ROM and Kernel. But would still like more if I can turn off 3G somehow ?
if im at the college or a low service area, ill just touch the mobile data widget to disable 3G. still allows for text messages and calls, so not a huge deal. and it saves on battery life.

CDMA is not like GSM. Switching from 3G (EV-DO) to 2G (1x) will not save you battery.
Ahhh you have to edit the widget.txt file in system. Change the 4gtoggle to MobileData with the caps. Use root explorer to edit the file then reboot. System/customize/widget.txt

Is there another way to toggle on/off the mobile data ? What does that icon look like ?
There are a number of ways:
1) Hold the power button -> Hit Mobile Data.
2) Change the 4G (or any other notification toggle) to MobileData in widget.txt as stated a few posts above.
3) Install JuiceDefender to have it done automatically when you're not using the phone.

You can also just go into Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks and uncheck Mobile Networks or Mobile data/connections or whatever it was called. (Sorry on CM7 atm)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877003
That explains how to add it to your power notifications bar.
But if you have Ultimate Juice, set it so it does it for you.

You mean "Always On Mobile Data". And yes, Ultimate Juice will do it for you.
I have an app in the market called Network Switch. It allows Sense ROMs to switch to 2g only or 3g only. However, I can't find any data that it will save battery.

Dude I can see in the picture you are already running juice defender! Just go into the jd settings and set it to automatically enable/disable 3g. It will turn off data when your screen is off and trigger it when you light it up. You can also configure 2g/3g with it depending on your rom support.

Want long battery life? Tips on how to have it!

Hey guys I am lefty and I like to use my a lot and I mean a lot I am texting; using youtube facebook tumblr all the time and with the regular settings my battery dies before I get home.. but since that I always happens to me I tend to do a lot of setting changes to save battery so it keeps me around 50% by the time I get home from school.
- Wi-fi Off
-Background Data Off
-Auto Off Screen 1 min
-Animations None at all or Some
-Brightness Auto Brightness
Everything Else can be left alone.
Now I recommend having a custom Kernel as this helps a lot!
Now with Set CPU I use profiles and these profiles really helped improve battery life.
Please don't mind that there isn't a 3G icon in my house its crappy ass service so I tend to turn it off and use wi-fi!

The 12 am 5 am profile is for me only so the battery last me longer for school the next day so don't set a profile like that
BTW I hope this helps you get long battery life!
Thanks to drellisdee for his awesome kernel that gives me long ass battery life!
I'm curious about the in call profile you have set
Would you really need a 1ghz clock in a call?
what's this awesome kernel that you're using? i want in

Honestly I have noticed no real difference it's the fact that the phone is in my pocket or in my bag and it always get hot since I can't keep out of the sun at school that is why it is very low.. you can set it higher if you would like.. but I notice no difference at all.

Honestly it's your choice you can set that profile or either change the max frequency, really just up to you.
For me, when I'm in a WiFi network (actually connected and not just turned on scanning for stuff) my battery lasts a lot longer that way than on 3g.

That's crazy! Have you mailed the developers? It must be images or something, text couldn't add up to that. Maybe leave it connected to your wifi and run wireshark or something (if you've got an adapter that will run promiscuous mode properly) - maybe you can see what it's doing...

Images? Forget about images, this has to be downloading high quality videos to get to 9GB.
I have some serious security concerns about what this app is doing. You should try to sniff the data and see how much its sending versus receiving. I'd be curious to know what IP addresses it is communicating with. Did you install it directly from the market?

Hi,
I am the dev of this app.
1. when you have such trouble, please contact me by email (hopefully somebody did).
2. check if it load images and images sizes. It doesn't load 'thumbnails' from the websites, but full images if thumbnails are not available ... so, if the website use big images of 2Mb ... it can goes quickly.
3. disable widget cache if it was enable
4. here is my widget with 3h refresh period and 8 feeds :
http://pureapps.planethoster.org/images/presentation/pne_data.png
5. if you use the internal viewer, all browsing you does in the viewer is counted ... video streaming, downloads...
@deekjx : For comments about 'security concerns', dump the UDP/TCP trafic if you want, there is nothing hidden. But, please, be careful before publishing such comments. Now, if the app doesn't come from the market, you can be right... few users reported Pure calendar hacked bersions containing viruses because they got it from a 'forum'.
Please, email me logcats just after a manual refresh to check what is wrong.
Same for me too
Switched to manual update worked fine. contacted dev through market

Why is my phone tearing through my data when I'm not looking?

Early this morning the count was at 79mb and now all of the sudden it's at 135mb. I'm at work so I have my llama profile set to Wi-Fi ON and mobile data OFF. I've caught my phone turning on data by itself once already and now I'm starting to think that it wasn't a bug but an actual flaw in cyanogenmod (or new feature, who knows). When I go into Traffic Monitor Plus to check which app is eating away my data, it shows that 122mb have been used by "System Traffic"
Has this happened to anyone? How would I go about fixing this problem?

You sure you don't have a rogue app pulling data like a weather widget? How many launchers you have? One thing that I have have found is if you have more then one launcher installed and you have widgets open in the non used launcher they can still use data and resources. Ex. If you have a stock ROM with touchwiz by default it has a couple widgets in the home screens. Well say you install nova right away and switch to it.., those of widgets on touchwiz are till running.,. Using data etc... check that..

I have been chewing through the data since I got my S3. O my Inspire, with the same usage, I would only use ~1.2Gb/mo. I came close to my 2gb cap last month.
Sure enough, I had some widgets in TW. Weather, news, etc. I didn't even think about it. We'll see if removing them has any effect.

Well I do have weather and news widgets but the main thing here is that I was at work, where I'm always on Wi-Fi. My location profiles are set up so that when I'm at work my data is turned off. In fact I have no profiles set up that turn my data on.
I was listening to a podcast and I'm guessing that mobile data somehow turned on and started streaming over that instead of Wi-Fi. I'm trying to figure out why this would happen.
And what the heck would classify as "system traffic"? Kind of a vague term for something that's eating away that much data in no time.

my phone wasted 950 mb of data in 4 hours. I went to pick it up to the Rogers store at 2 pm, and i went back to the office. when i got home at 7, i saw that i had used 980 mb of data. Who's to blame? Picasa web albums, which came with sync on by default.

I am not on Cyanogenmod, just the stock Rom so I don't know if this setting is the same.
But you can try and check this setting: Settings -> Wi-Fi -> Advanced -> Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep.
For me it used to be set to "Only when plugged in" so when the phone was woken up from sleep mode it would always start using my LTE data until i manually turned Wi-Fi back on.
Setting it to "Always" means it always uses my Wi-Fi connection when coming out of sleep, whether I do it or some app does it in the background.

[APP] 'Data Lock' : unplug 3G while the screen is off

Hi
I'm not a developper but I created an app with the Tasker App Factory that unplug 3G one minute after you lock your screen. The one minute delay is here to prevent the phone plugging and unplugging at any time the screen goes off. During this delay, if you wake your device, the process will stop and begin again when you turn the screen off. When the screen is off, after the 1 minute delay, 3G is stopped while the phone is in your pocket to prevent battery drain
Once it is stopped, if you wake the device a new 5 second delay is started, for those who just want to check the clock , and then the 3G is plugged with a ''Data restarted'' toast
Note : Tasker IS NOT required to use this apk :victory:
Feel free to request any modification like the delay or the toast text, I'm here to share such things. And if it helped, don't forget the :good: button

Feel free to request any modification like the delay or the toast text, I'm here to share such things. And if it helped, don't forget the :good: button

it will be cool if there is an option to switch to 2g from 3g when the screen is off!! if it do that it will be perfect

Sorry but 2G/3G toggle doesn't work on stock 4.2.2 (my actual rom) which mean I can't use it with Tasker
We need tasked installed right?

Ow sorry I forgot to mention it.... You DO NOT need Tasker to use it
thanks for remember me it, I add it :good:
cpu usage
Your app gave me a watchdog alert as it's using more than 50% CPU. This would counteract any benefits as eating CPU results in battery drain.
It also uses 15.3 mb of ram when its role is simple and in no way justifies the ram/CPU usage.
Going to try this as I am tired of manually switching to 2g all the time.

let's stay in touch
From my Nexus 4
It seems to be using more juice than saving it.
Shows up as 2nd highest draining source after screen.
You seem to be right... That's too bad because I use tasker 24 hours a day with many profiles and tasks and it saves my battery!

Thank you, but, you know, I'm not a dev, I just like the app tasker and they propose to transfer their context into apps. I'm absolutely not able to do what you're expecting (yet)
