Hey everybody, I'm using CM7 and occasionally when I press the power button to wake my device up from sleeping, it only lights up the 4 capacitive buttons while the screen remains black. If I fiddle with it some, it eventually turns on but it's getting more and more frequent and annoying. If you have any redirects to a thread (I couldn't find one for the life of me) or suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
I had the same issue. CM7 rc1. I went back to CM 6.1.2 for the time being.

Do you follow the thread at all? This is discussed on about half the pages. It's because you have both the CRT screen on/off animations set and you are overclocked above around 1.2ghz. Either ease up on the oc, or turn off the animations for the screen. No problem with the ROM or your phone.

Actually I fixed the problem by turning the wifi off. SetCPU is set under 1GHz.

This problem is caused by too high of an overclock.

why not try trackball wake?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I agree, I can't see my self not using the track pad wake method. I'm oc to just over 1ghz(ondemand) & have no problems waking up my phone with the screen on & off animations. I prefer CPU tuner over setcpu anyday.

My g2 with cm7 rc1 has similar symptoms, where when the power button is pressed the capacitive buttons light up, and the back lighting on the screen is noticeable, but nothing more. I have tried a battery pull, a soft reboot, and still the screen does not wake up. I had the oc at 1100 before this happened. Any ideas on how I can get the screen back on in order to change the settings? Thanks
update: The screen still does not come on, but I received a phone call and was able to answer it by sliding my finger across the screen in the general area where you normally swipe to answer, and then I ended the call by tapping where the end icon usually sits. So the touch screen is working, but there are no visuals.
Restore your Nandroid and set it differently next time.

Is there a method to restore my nandroid without being able to use the screen? Can i do it over ADB?

Do a battery pull. Put the battery back in. Hold the volume down button and then press and hold the power button. That'll put you to a screen that has a bunch of text on it. (Let go of the buttons if you're still holding them) Hit the volume down button once. Should highlight "recovery" then hit the power button to select. It'll boot into recovery now. Wipe data, then wipe cache, then wipe dalvik/cache (under advanced) then backup & restore, and select your nandroid. Once done, hit the back arrow, then select reboot
Now, if the screen doesn't even turn on when you do the batt pull, allowing you to see anything at call, sorry LOL.

That's good advice, but wanted to let you know it is unnecessary to do the wipe data/cache/dalvik cache before you restore a nandroid backup. Part of the restore process does a complete wipe automatically before it restores, so doing it beforehand is superfluous.
I have never heard of anyone's screen issue persisting through a reboot. That would drive me nuts. Make sure you never set SetCPU to 'Set on boot' until you are sure your governing and secondary profiles are stable with the kernal you are running on your device.

I know, but I like to make sure anyway. At least I know for my own sanity that it's definitely wiped lol.
Thank you all for the input, but the screen never comes on at all, even in the bootloader or recovery.

When attempting to make a selection in clockwork mod with the power button it essentially makes the screen go dark like it is locking the screen. This may be a stupid quest but is there another button for selecting options such as wipe and apply updates from sd. I know on some devices it is the trackball but I have no clue what it is on the evo.
I've seen this "feature" before. Unfortunately I don't recall how to get out of that mode. There's aparently a way to turn that on. Iirc, I got out of it by being on the top setting, vol up, then power. I was just pressing stuff at that point, so I could be wrong. On the upside, you can't really select something you don't want in that state. Lol

I have rooted my HTC Desire with unrevoked and alpharev and now i was going to do a nandroid backup. But when i press the backup and restore button the screen goes black and just stays that way, so i have to pull the battery and restart it. Can anyone help me with this?
What button? ROM Manager? Do it from recovery, and make sure you have enough free space on your sd card (~300MB minimum).
I found out the hard way what happens if you don't.
That's what i'm doing. I turn the phone off. Turn it on by pressing volume down and the on-button. I then go into recovery and scroll down to backup and restore, and press the on-button. Then the screen just goes black and i have to pull the battery and restart it.
Press the trackpad rather than the standby button! This should have the desired effect

That did the trick. Thank you!
LOL. I made the same mistake.

Lol, +1!!
"...OK, vol down, power button...wait for text to appear, select recovery...all sweet, select backup/restore, press button...sheeeeet! WTF, waddid I do?? Noooo, my phones pucked! Sheeet, sheeet, sheeet!!! O, hang on, that was the off button...ooops "
I think we've all been there!!
My Desire has just came contact with water yesterday.
I suppose everything is fine.
Just that my volume rocker(vol. down) is stuck.
So whenever I try to turn on my phone, it will bring me to the hboot.
I can't even use the volume rocker to get me to the recovery
Is there anyway that I can turn on my phone?
Thank you very much
Can't you move in hboot at all (vol up?)?
Have you tried vol down + power + trackball to reboot your phone? (This way you wouldn't start the phone with power and vol down, maybe that's enough to boot into the rom.)
However if you boot into rom a whole new set of nightmares would greet you. Phone always silent etc. (Yet you might be able to use button remapper to assign "nothing" to that button.)
If I were you I would pop out battery and put the phone in slightly elevated temperature (white some free air movement) and hope it would completely dry out. That would probably enough to fix the switch. How long did you let your phone dry after "weting" it?
Stick your phone in rice with the battery out for a few days, then boot into Fastboot (back & power), and run a RUU. You can find one for your network from shipped-roms.com. Just make sure you download a Froyo one not an Eclair one.
Hmm, I've tried the rice method it doesn't work
I've left it for around 12 hours
I disassembled the whole and sever the volume circuit already :X
However.. it still doesn't work
It still forces me into hboot
I can't seems to get to fast boot either
It would be fine If i can gain control in hboot, so I can boot into recovery and boot into system.
I only want to save all my messages before.. dumping the phone :x
If there any other ways?
Thank you for the help

U can use ButtonRemapper (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464) to assign volume functionality to other buttons. This only works within the booted rom, however.

Hmm.. do you have any idea of disabling the volume button?
I'm not sure, what happens if you edit volume down and set state to 'none' in remapper?
Or you can try editing
/system/usr/keylayout/bravo-keypad.kl
(needs root and system mounted as R/W)
and delete the characters after key 115 and key 114 (or maybe even delete both lines)
create a backup first (or if u use Root Explorer's Text editor it will create automatically create one before saving)
Oh, okay, thank you, once again, you have save my life!!
Tried the mapper, but phone keep restarting

Sorry for the trouble again :x
It seems that when I lock my phone, the phone will automatically wakes up
I don't think it is the power button, as when I'm using my phone, my phone doesn't auto lock itself...
It just auto wakes
Is there any app, there can find which button is faulty?

What rom are you using?
In BCM (CM9 source) there are two options in settings/display at the bottom in wakeup options section: volume rocker wake and trackball wake. If you have those, uncheck them.
Dont think so, using a sense rom

This would probably work if he didn't power the phone on - which he did. After that, damage has been done. In my liquid cooling my pc experience, if the short circuit happened, the game is over in 99% of the cases.

Hello!
I need some help, I have a problem with my Wildfire. When I press the power button, the screen does not wake up, only after I press it several times does it wake up, and other times I have to remove the battery to get it to work again. Tried the solution for brightness settings bug, it's not helping, tried factory reset, no help either. Also, when I press the power button, the back button, search, home and menu, all light up, but the screen is black. The ROM I'm using is DK Custom Froyo.
Does anyone know what to do?
Thanks in advance.
maybe it is broken and doesn't work correctly. when u press trackball then ur screen is waking?? if not then flashing rom again could help

I tried pressing the trackball, but nothing happens, I will try flashing my ROM, I was going to flash it as a last resort, but thanks for your advice.
I'll let you know if it helps to reflash.

It could also be that your min CPU frequency is set too low.

Reflashing didn't help, I'll try modifying the CPU frequency.
Yesterday, I turned the phone off and it took me 4 hours to power it back on, when I pressed the power button, it just vibrated once and that's it, and when I tried to power it with volume up and power, it vibrated 3 times and green led turned on but nothing more, volume down and power gave me no reaction on the phone, I think that my Wildfire is probably getting to the point of no return, so to speak.
If I long press the power button, instead of showing the menu where I have the commands like "Power off, reboot, profile, airplane mode" nothing happens and the phone locks just like if I pressed the power button once. And if I long press it for a long time the phone will force shut down which is normal.
However when I reboot my phone, everything works fine again, so when I hold the power button for 2 seconds, the menu appears. But after some time the bug will occur again and I will have to reboot which is very annoying.
Is there a fix for it? And do you think it is a hardware problem but it would be strange since after a reboot it will work.
Note : I recently factory reset my phone, wiped everything and flashed the CM 10.1.3 custom rom (which I also had before) but the power button bug reappeared. So I don't think resetting it again will fix it.
Using lg nitro hd, cm 10.1.3 rom, with wind kernel.
I just got exacly same thing, 10.1.3, wind kernel, and reboot will fix it.
Suspect is some memory leak? Logcat showed ION_IOC_ALLOC out of memory.
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda app-developers app
Ok, logcat is showing mpdecision missing timer something and throw error every 5 sec, then i figured out wind kernel 2.6 doesnt touch it, only 2.5 disable it. So i flashed 2.5 then 2.6. Now the logcat is better, but not sure this repeating error cause the oom, time will see
