Can't access XDA Forums - About xda-developers.com

I'm having trouble connecting to the forums at home. I have determined that it's my modern or ISP that is having problems but others on the same ISP can access the site just fine. I deleted the cookies, reset the modem, restart the computer but nothing works.

do you use peerblock? or anything like that?
i found i had to add all xda's ip's to my allow list

yeah, forum sometimes is down or unreachable from some places.

Nope I don't use any blocking software. I can access the forums right now on my phone using 3G but I can't on any computer at home.

When you can't access the Forums, can you try and run a traceroute (tracert on windows) to forum.xda-developers.com? and then please post the results here.
Heres a quickie tutorial for Windows users:
http://support.verio.com/documents/view_article.cfm?doc_id=3743

I can't post the results if I can't access the forums lol

I take it you can access it sometimes since your able to make this post? You can save the text in a file and then post it here or PM me when you can. Thanks!
Edit: Or maybe your posting through your wireless carrier? If thats the case, kindly save the text from the traceroute on your computer and put it on your phone. Copy and paste that into the XDA App and post it. Hope that helps.

I'm posting via 3g and not wifi. How can I copy and paste the trace route?
Basically it times out...
Sent from my Samsung i896 using XDA App

How about using the camera on your phone to take a picture of the DOS prompt showing the traceroute?
You can also just copy and paste the traceroute to www.pastebin.com (on your computer) and then post the link to it from your phone.

Ah I didn't know you can take pictures and then upload them using the app. I'll do that when I get home and then post it as a new post.

Thanks for providing that. Unfortunately it does look like the problem is at your ISP. Your packets (data) don't get anywhere close to XDA Forum servers and immediately stops at your ISP (and before they even leave the ISP).
The Forums are Portal are hosted on separate networks which does explain why your able to use the Portal. Unfortunately theres nothing we can really do on our end, I will contact our network provider and have them make sure it is not anything on their end, however it is very very unlikely; please PM me with your home IP address and I'll have them take a look.

Accessing XDA-Forums atm on my laptop via tethering, which is the same network as my ISP (both Rogers). I seriously got no idea what's going on.
I have yet to get a reply from the ticket I opened with Rogers technical support, but chances are they'll say it's not their problem just like the last time I had a problem.

Basically from our side, we are able to send packets (data) to the Rogers network without any issue but it does appear the packet gets lost once its inside Rogers' network. Please let us know if you hear back from Rogers, we're definitely interested in knowing if this affects other Rogers users. Thanks again!

I haven't heard from Rogers yet, but I was out the whole day.
Anyways I AM BACK! Nothing's changed too.

[ROOT] DroidWall v1.5.1 - Android Firewall (Useful for most of us)

Hi everyone,
I don't have an unlimited data plan. I always went to use WhatsApp Messenger . Howsoever, there are many application runs on the background spending traffic (also draining battery too fast). today I have found out there is an application free on the market call "DroidWall - Android Firewall". This application works as iptables front-end to block undesired applications from accessing the network.
You may alos restrict any program depending on the type of the connection. For example you set Gmail application only works when you use WIFI and will get block when you using 3G for example.
I thinks they are more people have the same problem I had. that's I am sharing it here.
ATTENTION: ROOT REQUIRED!!!
Front-end application for the iptables Linux firewall.
Allows you to restrict which apps can access the network.
This is the perfect solution if you don't have an unlimited data plan, or just wants to see your battery lasting longer.

Thanks for this.
Just curious.. In PC environments we use firewalls to control outbound and prevent rogue inbound..
I know this differs depending on carrier but with ATT our network is proxied anyway (meaning inbound will always fail) and as for outbound it would seem if there was an app on android you didn't want having net presence you'd just freeze or uninstall it.
Not criticizing the app.. Just hoping someone will give me some example uses where I could take advantage of it other than not having unlimited data as that makes perfect sense.
Thanks for your work!

Settings for HTC WIFI Hotspot?
Hi, Great app.
Can anybody tell how to allow HTC WIFI Hotspot to connect internet?
It doesn't appear on droidwall's app list, but instead when I turn on "(root) - Applications running as root", I can access to internet from my laptop.
But I'm not sure this setting can allow ANY of root apps to access internet, which we may not want them to.
Please tell what's the best solution for that? Otherwise should I install other wifi hotspot app?
Anybody noticed any improvements in battery life after using this?
I use LBE Privacy Guard that features pop ups and privacy protection

the battery life was probably terrible if it used this much :/
That's crazy! Have you mailed the developers? It must be images or something, text couldn't add up to that. Maybe leave it connected to your wifi and run wireshark or something (if you've got an adapter that will run promiscuous mode properly) - maybe you can see what it's doing...

Images? Forget about images, this has to be downloading high quality videos to get to 9GB.
I have some serious security concerns about what this app is doing. You should try to sniff the data and see how much its sending versus receiving. I'd be curious to know what IP addresses it is communicating with. Did you install it directly from the market?

Hi,
I am the dev of this app.
1. when you have such trouble, please contact me by email (hopefully somebody did).
2. check if it load images and images sizes. It doesn't load 'thumbnails' from the websites, but full images if thumbnails are not available ... so, if the website use big images of 2Mb ... it can goes quickly.
3. disable widget cache if it was enable
4. here is my widget with 3h refresh period and 8 feeds :
http://pureapps.planethoster.org/images/presentation/pne_data.png
5. if you use the internal viewer, all browsing you does in the viewer is counted ... video streaming, downloads...
@deekjx : For comments about 'security concerns', dump the UDP/TCP trafic if you want, there is nothing hidden. But, please, be careful before publishing such comments. Now, if the app doesn't come from the market, you can be right... few users reported Pure calendar hacked bersions containing viruses because they got it from a 'forum'.
Please, email me logcats just after a manual refresh to check what is wrong.
Same for me too
Switched to manual update worked fine. contacted dev through market

almost impossible to browse on a desktop right now
Earlier today I started having problems and sometimes moving to the master forum list then going back down to the topic I was reading would get it to work, but anytime I refreshed it would break. Now it's broken constantly. It's almost useless at this point to try and read anything here.
Wow, one minute it looks normal, now it seems to change with every page refresh.
Must be some ongoing editing of the web page at the moment.
I found a temporary fix, if you setup a proxy for your browser the site loads correctly, using web based proxy for now just for xda forums and works

i upgraded to the unlimited 4g on the 5th and i have been running XquiziT Rom since then. Now i haven't touched the stock tether app nor do I have any tether apps installed. last night i was using GTunes music downloader from the app store to download some songs. im just guessing here but i say i was on about my 14th download when i got a text from tmobile stating "to prevent future mobile hotspot from being blocked please add hotspot service from...and it had a link to go to tmob website.that was at 3:53am. so i figured it was just a notice everyone got. i download about 3 more songs and then at 3:58am i got a 2nd text stating that hotspot service had been blocked please add and another link just slightly diff than the first. the crazy part is when i got that 2nd text i could no longer download music with the app. i still can't either, it will let me search a song but when i hit download for it to generate the actual download button/link just disappears and says ive lost network connection. it still working on wifi though. sorry for the lengthy post but i just wanted to include all details i could think of. i mean i was downloading them fast like really fast back to back but, lol nevermind im just confused. these incidents tied together somehow or just a coincidence and everyone got those text? im open for any thoughts or ideas or answers.

I would call and explain to them you were using an app from the market to download files to your device and that no tethering was involved what so ever. I didnt get any texts. I wonder if their programs saw high data usage and assumed it was being tethered. But you said you dont have data anymore? or can you still browse the web and such?
That is weird, I would download roms using my 4g and I've be never received a message like that. Call them up and explain what happened, they will be helpful more then likely, hopefully.

Yeah call them up and let them know you were using their network to pirate music over Gtunes and they should hook you up.
I believe is the way the app is configure, tmobile think you using hot spot instead of the app, I don't think they going to be able to help you, they blocked it.

T-Mo usually has great customer service - your best bet is to just call and tell them what's up. It probably is a badly written app. Until then, you're probably better off waiting for wifi to download lots of stuff. When I've downloaded ROMs in the past, I've gotten angry texts from Tmo.
i wonder if i should try a wifi tether, not the tmo one but one from the app store and see what happens
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I believe I have found what's happening. I have been tethering using wifi tether for root users, and I got this same message. T-mobile is looking at where the data comes from, and flagging it if they think it's being used from a desktop. I read where other users got this same message, because on their stock browser, they changed their user agent to desktop instead of mobile. Because all their internet browsing, from the phone, was looking at desktop views, t-mobile assumed they were tethered to a desktop and tried to block access. I would assume that your music downloader is getting it's downloads from "desktop" sites, or something about the downloads are being flagged as desktop.
I would bet, if you tried to browse from your mobile browser viewing desktop sites, it would block you. It's BS, and they can't do it forever. Sure, guys like me are being blocked from tethering, which is what they are after, but you aren't the first victim who was using your phone legitimately and got blocked.

Reboot your phone and see if it still is happening (I'm assuming you've already done that).
After a bit more research, the original error is relatively common and has a simple solution (see post #4. All you have to do is remove your google account (in settings), then open the play store (it'll give you errors about no account on the phone). Then you can go back and re-add your account. This should clear the original error code.
The second error code probably is due to the fact that you're on 3G. According to other users, sometimes the play store has connectivity issues over 3G (especially is the service is spotty). And apparently it's a known issue on the entire continent of Australia (look at "Downloading, installing and updating apps" and "[#7041453] Australian users: errors 927 and 495"). Others have reported that this error goes away when connected to wifi.
Hope this helps.
