Which battery saving app ? Juice or Green ? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Curious what app for battery conserving do the XDA peeps recommend ? The two most popular that I see mentioned a lot are; JuiceDefender + Green Power.
Opinions wanted please.

Never used green power, but juice is ok. I just feel like it didn't help me much.
Swyped from my sexy EVO.

I'm using juice defender with ultimate juice, Calk's EViO 1.8 w/50mv undervolt. This was with a decent ammount of web browsing, a few games through out the day & some texting (no calls, who does that anymore?) But 16.5hrs & 27% battery left, not to shabby.

I loved JD on froyo but it doesn't seem to do much for my already great battery life on cm7.
I tried Green Power, I like it but it still has its GB limitations too.

I am using green right now, idk whether to blame the app or 1.90 but battery life is horrible. Went from 43%-0% within an hour doing nothing.

That is terrible I haven't used Green Power, but thought it was supposed to practically shut down everything once the screen goes off, and the phone just sits there ?
What Kernel are you using ? A different kernel could help big time, same as the PRI version you're running ? Seems the most popular PRI for better battery life is 1.77_003. And lastly check if there is a "wake lock", widgets running 100% in the background your not aware of.

I think green hurts more then it helps... atleast that was my experience while using it.

My pri and nv are the same. 1.90. How would I know if a widget was always running? I do have clockr, oneseven, and beautiful widgets clock. I'm on stock kernal, I believe 15? Whichever myns warm two point two RLS 5 comes with. I was thinking to switch back to 1.77 but I would also have to change my kernal.

Juicedefender is very good for froyo. It doesn't have gingerbread suppport yet so it doesn't work with CM7. It already gets good battery life, so oh well. Set CPU is also a little buggy on gingerbread.
When I used to use CM6, I had SetCPU and Juicedefender. I could get about 28-36 hours with moderate use. I had it configured very well.

Another battery life question...

I have a buddy with a droid x that gets RIDICULOUS battery life. What is it that causes such a difference in endurance? I mean most of the other specs basically match up... Is it htc related? Can I get "droid-like" battery life somehow? I'm on fresh 3.3 with netarchy 4.1.9.1 bfs

I havent played much with the DroidX but from what I have read it has a power profile managment on it much like a laptop . I believe that is the part Motorola put in the phone . Profiles like LONGER BATTERY LIFE , or MORE PERFORMANCE . Something Im kinda surprised the EVO wasnt given but I make it thorugh the day on one charge
Are you rooted?

Please keep in mind the apps you downloaded and the widgets you have set-up on your screens. Some apps require to be run in the background eventhough they are NOT used by you at the time, such as Google Talk, Qik, Fring, pedometer, and anything that needs to be "ON"...thats one of the culprit on battery drain you might want to look into.
Having one widget per homescreen is ideal, in my opinion..and learned that by having multiple widgets in one screen, is another culprit in battery drain due to it requiring to work upfront, for example, Facebook widget needs to be on constantly and updated for as long as that widget is there, regardless if you touched/used it or not.
Now, for the MOST OBVIOUS part...turning off GPS, WiFi, 4G, and bs when you DON'T need them, by following hot sexy COMMON SENSE, you should get AT LEAST 3 hours more on your battery. Pure sexy common sense LOL ;-)

Greetings,
I couldn't agree more with all the things you noted in your reply.
I rooted mine, and deleted many apps I don't use, but insisted on starting up
even if I had already killed them in the manage applications section.
But I was amazed at how short the life was in spite of having done that. I quickly
discovered (as you noted) that keeping 4G on, drains the batt.
In fact, for me anyway, it really drains the batt!
Just thought I'd mention it, because it was really surprising to me just how bad
an affect on the battery 4G was - bummer.
--Chris
Mine usually gets between 36-55 hours on a charge (record is 58 so far) with about 3-5 hours of "use" on the stock battery. I don't use it to play games or watch movies, just phone, internet, email, etc - widgets all over the place. Gmail push is always on as well. In fact, I unplugged it last at 10:50pm on the 28th (34 hours ago) and I'm at 48% still.
The biggest thing I've found is download setCPU and adjust the CPU frequency to 245 MHz when the screen is off. That saves a lot. Other then that I keep it at 998 MHz (max speed) all other times. I am playing around with tasker and turning airplane mode on while I sleep, but that seems to have a minimal effect, saving around 2% over 8 hours. I use tasker to turn GPS off unless I'm using one of my GPS-enabled programs, although that doesn't seem to do much either.
I'm running just a basic sense rom with a stock kernel, nothing special. rooted with clockworkmod and that's all I've done rom/kernel-wise.
If you actually use your phone a lot I'm not sure there's much you can do besides get a bigger battery. If you just use it mostly as a phone and less as a PMP or gaming device you should be able to get some nice results.
EDIT: Oh yea, and don't use a task killer (I don't). From what I've read those can actually cause the phone to consume MORE power as services are being killed and opened constantly. Android is very good about leaving tasks open in the background without them consuming power. Opening and closing them constantly is another story.
I wish I could figure this out too. I've been switching between a ton of kernels and roms and can't seem to find anything with good battery life. My phones been unplugged for about 2 1/2 hours and I'm at 53% battery life. No widgets running and just average usage.
Running virusrom and kings #9 and a lot of other roms and battery life is a joke.

So far, the best battery combo I've found is fresh 3.2 with it's stock rom and I returned to it last night. Some say 3.3 is as good or better but I can't seem to get those same results...
But my real question is, why is the droid able to get such great life?

What I have found to help most of all is to NOT use the Mail app - it drains the battery like crazy, especially if you are popping several accounts. Instead, use the gmail client and set it up to pop your other accounts, and push them to you. This literally trippled my battery life. And it is way faster than the 15 minute intervals that the mail app gives you. Give it a shot, you will be pleasantly surprised.

What's the best way to save battery life while using the seidio 3500mah battery

I am trying a way to save battery life on my phone and I charge it for about 6 to 8 hours and erased a lot of applications is don't use but it drains out every minute and I have to leave it in airplane mode to really save battery life can someone please help me with this.

It's a thread in the development section called superior kernel I think just look at the first page it's a special kernel that works with that battery.

I have a seidio as well. Im using myn's warm with calk's 131 kernel witch is supposed to add trickle charging. I am getting kick ass life. Close to 2 days. I found out that with these bigger batts you have to leave them on charge for about three hours after the light goes green. Something bout the phone going green when the batt reaches 1500. Charging over night is what I do. Oh ya, I also have my cpu clocked up to 1152000 and I still get this great life. Let me know if this works for you. That kernel is located at this thread, and it should work for most roms- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876590
Look for the one that fits your rom. There are different ones for sense vs. aosp. If you're not sure post a reply and ask for help. Include the rom you're using.

Root/rom/battery question

Droid incredible. Rooted, virtually every rom through rom manager causes my phone to battery to drain very fast.
After a charge itll drop to 90% in about twenty minutes. Iv heard thats a droid thing.
From that point, it steadies but still is losing juice FAST. Phone has been awake for 8hrs today with light usage and is currently at 70%. Gps off, wifi off, etc. No vibrating feedback, auto brightness.....all settings geared for battery conservation.
Im using Incrom 1.6 with a stock kernal. Any ideas or thoughts are appreciated as i dont stop hearing that everyone in the world is rooted and enjoying their batterys new ability. Ohhh, btw extended battery, red htc one in case that matters.

Try flashing some new kernels..try a couple out. If that doesn't work did you over charge your phone? Or use a car charger?

Everybody's definition of "light usage" is different. Losing 20% in 8 hours doesn't seem that bad to me unless you litterally never turned your screen on. That said, here are some things you can try:
1. I've found that the auto brightness sucks and I'm better off just manually setting it to 25% or so. That's fine for indoor use and you can't see the screen in bright sunlight anyway regardless of the setting so why bother burning battery trying?
2. Try flashing a kernel that allows you to underclock and undervolt. Perhaps one of Ziggy's nonHAVs kernels (I have found that HAVS kernels to be unstable, but YMMV). Either use the smartass governor or setCPU to cap screen off at 384 MHz.
3. Carry a charger with you
I'd see what is using your battery in settings.
Also, you could try chad's sense (12/28 I think) incredikernel, which sets the max clock speed really low when the screen's off (defaults to smartass governer).
If you wanted to try CM7, gingerbread has a much better battery usage UI that'll give you a nice graph of battery usage vs. time for phone awake time, signal strength, wifi and some other stats.

[Q] cannot seen to get better battery life

Ok when i first got my evo stock it would go from 100% to 60% battery in 20mim. Now im running CM7 with savagedzen cfs kernel and i have the cpu oc'd to almost 1.2ghz and i have a 25mv undervolt thanks to viperboy. Now my battery will go from 100% to 80% in 20mim which is still horrible. What else could i try to get the kimd of battery life that everyone rants about with savagedzen?
Ps. I really do not want to flash my radio. Im terrified of bricking my phone. I bricked my hd2 because of a failed radio flash.
Find a method you can live with that will fully charge your battery. I am one of the many who believe that the algorithm that determines battery charge is flawed. Personally, I charge my battery until the LED turns green and then I unplug for 60 seconds. If the LED or battery monitor widget does not display a full charge afterwards, I repeat the process until it does. After that, my battery life is awesome. Give out a try.
posting & replying from my EVO 4G
Well my phone usually drops to 99% within a few sconds. I am desperately trying to figure this out, Ive come so far, and have done so much with this phone, but to be stopped by something so trivial.
If I can be sure a radio update would help then I may have to, but I have no idea how to on the evo, or how to find the correct radio. Can anyone make any reccomendations? Should I try to flash? if so what radio would be a good start? are there any other things I could try aswell?
Here are my current specs:
ROM: CyanogenMod-7.0.3.1
Kernel: 2.6.38.6-SavagedZen-2.2.0-CFS
Base Band: 2.15.00.11.19
CPU: 245min-1190max
Undervolt: -25mv (Vipermod) (Crashed when set any lower)
Governor: Smartass
Brightness: ~40% (No Auto Brightness)
And I never ever run any task killers, I only use MultitaskingPro to switch between running process.
Try tiamat sbc kernel

Your setup is pretty much the same as mine.
Try this:
Download "Battery Monitor Widget" from the market and charge your phone until the phone's light turns green and the widget says 100%, tap the widget and wait for the current to display "8mA," you phone will be fully charged by then. My phone will usually stay at 100% for at least 5mins and drops to 99% after 10mins of use.
Also try using Savagegen governor instead of smartass.
Let me know if that works any.

With the newest PRI quite a few people have had their up times and awake times as the same number, implying that the phone isn't sleeping properly, which would of course amount to poor battery life. I had the issue once, and flashing an older PRI fixed it. Check your up time and awake time to see if they are the same or look suspicious.

Radios
download PRI 1.77_003 and NV 1.90_003 and flash them through recovery, I used Amon Ra for amend scripting and went away from Kernel/ROM manager.
Charge your battery to 100% with the phone, then turn off the phone and charge it again with it off..when the light turns green, unplug it and wait for the green light to turn off, then plug it in again and wait for the green light again.. when it's done, Hold the volume-down button, then press the power button and hold it down to get into bootloader then recovery.. clear batterystats.bin, then power off the phone again and plug it in again until the light goes green. Power on the phone and drain the battery completely until it powers off, this will create an accurate batterystats file for the full capacity of your battery.
Make sure you've optimized your settings for battery life, uninstall bloatware, turn off auto-brightness.. haptic feedback if you can live without it, turn off roaming.. find programs to list apps and CPU/Network usage and see which ones are use cpu/network and kill them/uninstall them.
You don't need to do any of that. Just click the link in my signature. you have to condition your battery.
BTW, overclocking is a battery killer....
This may seem like a stupid question, How do I check the up time and awake time? I Went to [Menu]>Settings>about phone>status> and the only thing there is uptime there is no awake time, or any other times....

That only shows on a sense rom. Cm7 you can see awake time on the battery usage graph
Overclocking isn't doing you any good. Especially since you're overclocking and undervolting at the same time. Try setting the CPU back to 998, if you really need to overclock constantly then there's probably something going on with your phone.

OK, So
-Im making a backup right now, getting ready to flash Tiamat 4.0.4 sbc. Also is Tiamat CFS or BFS, it doesn't say?
-I also dropped the clock back to 998(I have no real need to OC) With the clock dropped back im gonna see if I can drop to -50mv with vipermod. (-50mv was unstable with the oc)
-Im also going to continue to keep an eye on my up/awake time, but as of right now when i checked it they were the same. But ill keep an eye on it throughout the day. (They are both solid blue bars)
-Lastly Im going to bring a new new battery to the party.
Ok.....So ill keep you guys updated.
PS. My wifes evo has the exact same battery life issues as me, and her up/awake times are completely different. also is there a way to actually get a percentage or time? I hate just having those blue bars to go off of.

[Q] Best Battery Life..

I know it's been asked before a million time, but I don't have an Inc my daughter does. she has been running cm7 for the longest time. but it's gotten really bad as time had gone on. I have seen the list of ROM and it is huge, all I care about is battery.. dont matter is it AOSP, sense, senseless etc.
Can you please suggest the rom with the best battery like.
Thanks
Running MIUI with incredikernel with smartass 2 enabled and 128 min, I can go 2 full days with medium use till I need to charge again. But what works for me might not be the same for you or anyone else, that all depends on what all you have running/syncing in the background, how many times it syncs, network data, etc.

If she is using the same stock battery that came from the phone, it's likely that now it can only hold 60-80% of the original charge- depending on her use.
Maybe consider dropping a few bucks on a 1900mah battery (fits in stock casing).
-- -- -- -- --
I would stick with CM7, and make sure you're using the incredikernel. Try flashing the predefined "undervolt" file. If she has reboots, then just revert it and no worries.

Going to have to +1 that. CM7 definitely has had the best battery life on my phone, and I've flashed a ton of ROMs. I'm also running Incredikernel with smartassv2, which I think helps a lot.

Recent Anthem 3.0 can hold amazing charges, the OP had a 54 hour charge, someone also had a 20+ charge.
I'm guessing she uses it alot, Cm7 for me has been nothing but bad battery. Drains within an hour of medium use.
My suggestion is give the Anthem 3.0 a try and see how you and her like it.

Try Inc-Deck 1.3. It's an offshoot of CM7.1 and it works great with incredikernel 3/21 ICS. Set the govenor to interactivex, the max frequency to 883, the screen brightness to 20%, the screen timeout to 15 seconds and cross your fingers that you live in an area with strong signal.
I get anywhere from 16-30 hours with that combo depending on how much data I use.
If your daughter does not use much data switch it off... an instant 3-6 hours battery boost.

Anecdotally, I have found battery life improves with two things: leaving the screen off as much as possible (screen always drags battery life) and using wifi when it's available (the comment on data usage is true, it's a drain).
Also, getting a second battery is always a good idea, adds to the versatility of your smart phone experience.
I've found that the older gingerbread and sense roms have better battery life.
I would look into Nils' Business Gingersense ROM, and PureMotive's Anthem ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1530687)
I prefer Anthem, and if you follow the instructions on his post (using gingertiny kernel, setting CPU speed) you can achieve excellent battery life.
I personally used Anthem with Tiny's kernel and got about 48 hours with regular use.
