Root/rom/battery question - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Droid incredible. Rooted, virtually every rom through rom manager causes my phone to battery to drain very fast.
After a charge itll drop to 90% in about twenty minutes. Iv heard thats a droid thing.
From that point, it steadies but still is losing juice FAST. Phone has been awake for 8hrs today with light usage and is currently at 70%. Gps off, wifi off, etc. No vibrating feedback, auto brightness.....all settings geared for battery conservation.
Im using Incrom 1.6 with a stock kernal. Any ideas or thoughts are appreciated as i dont stop hearing that everyone in the world is rooted and enjoying their batterys new ability. Ohhh, btw extended battery, red htc one in case that matters.

Try flashing some new kernels..try a couple out. If that doesn't work did you over charge your phone? Or use a car charger?
sent from my Dinc

Its not the battery cause when i revert to stock the battery is normal for what im used to. The change is noticable wen i use any of the custom roms.
Right now wrkng on flash radio, hit a bump waiting for email back.
Ne other suggestions from u or nebody wud be apreciatd

I use the app batterycalibration after flashing new roms it works well for me

Everybody's definition of "light usage" is different. Losing 20% in 8 hours doesn't seem that bad to me unless you litterally never turned your screen on. That said, here are some things you can try:
1. I've found that the auto brightness sucks and I'm better off just manually setting it to 25% or so. That's fine for indoor use and you can't see the screen in bright sunlight anyway regardless of the setting so why bother burning battery trying?
2. Try flashing a kernel that allows you to underclock and undervolt. Perhaps one of Ziggy's nonHAVs kernels (I have found that HAVS kernels to be unstable, but YMMV). Either use the smartass governor or setCPU to cap screen off at 384 MHz.
3. Carry a charger with you

I'd see what is using your battery in settings.
Also, you could try chad's sense (12/28 I think) incredikernel, which sets the max clock speed really low when the screen's off (defaults to smartass governer).
If you wanted to try CM7, gingerbread has a much better battery usage UI that'll give you a nice graph of battery usage vs. time for phone awake time, signal strength, wifi and some other stats.

[Q] EXTREMELY horrible battery life

I've read on many reviews (Gizmodo, Engadget, CNet, etc) that the battery on the DInc is not that great, but mine is incredibly... bad. Examples:
I browse the web (mostly mobile websites with not many images, flash etc) for ~20 mins and battery life decreases by 20%
I leave the phone ON overnight without charging and it's at 2% in the morning. When I went to sleep it was at 60%
I turn the phone OFF overnight without charging and it dies (I couldn't turn it on, had to charge for 15 mins even to turn on). When I went to sleep it was at 30%
I've also heard both that ATK is useless and that it's a gift from God for battery life. I'm running the Pro version killing every 30min and it's not helping that much (maybe 30 mins)
Is my battery defective, or are other users also experiencing this bad of battery life? My DInc is SLCD, running UberZ RC1.2 with stock battery.
Im guessing you havent had your incredible for more than five months right? Considering htc didnt start making them until the late summer. Anyways I do know that desire z ports often use up quite a bit of battery in their displays. However considering you left it on overnight and it was nearly dead I dont think it was that. Something you can try is going in the advanced menu on clockwork mod and erasing battery stats. This seems more like a defective battery though. New batteries can be bought for fairly cheap and if you do decide to get a new one you can get them for pretty cheap. Touchpro 2 batteries supposedly work with the incredible as well
Make sure you turn off GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc. when not in use.

Yeah, I've had it for about a month. I will reply after erasing battery stats and trying it out. I'm not sure that I would use a Touch Pro 2 battery - seems like too much of a risk. However, I have seen Evo Batteries on Amazon that supposedly work with the Dinc. Do they?
If it helps, I use widget locker, with: extended controls, fancy widget, nexus revamped (with a lot of spawns on slow) and 3 sliders.

I have, I barely use BT or GPS so they're almost always off. I only turn GPS on when I'm charging and I'm using location based apps. 3G is off at home and Wifi is off on the road / at school and when I'm not using the phone.
What you might want to try doing is uninstalling widget locker and charging your phone all the way up. If after uninstalling widget locker the drain is still significant it may be the battery. And from what I read, the evo battery works with the incredible, it just makes the back cover fit a bit more tight.

OK, I've wiped battery stats, though it's only been a few mins so I can't tell yet. I'll reply in a couple of days. Also, can I just disable WidgetLocker instead of uninstalling it?
I also have a silicone case that hooks on the front edges, will an Evo Innocell (with back cover) mess with that?
I dont think an evo back cover would work for the incredible as they are not the same dimensions.
And btw touchpro 2 battery will work with the incredible

Heres one for $5 if youre thinking about it.

I just moved to an Incredible from my Droid 1 and the battery life is horrible compared... I got it as a replacement for having so many issues with my Droid but the battery life is almost unusable I'm running CM 6.1 and I wiped my battery stats, drained the battery then let it charge overnight powered off and I still get really bad life... I think a lot of it may have to do with the stock 1300mAh battery compared to the Droid having 1500mAh but I'm not sure... I'm considering the 3500mAh sedio battery but $70 bucks is a bit steep atm

Thanks for the great find, though I was thinking about maybe one of those seidio 3500's. Though since it's so cheap, I'll probably buy it

I've seen one on amazon for ~$25. Not seidio though. Reviews were meh.
I don't think its the 1300 mah vs 1500 mah. That's less than 20% (so like 10 hrs vs 12 hrs).

Don't run ATK. Android manages apps by itself. There's a whole lifehacker article on it.
Sounds like a run-away app.
Hmm, turn your screen off and let your phone sit for 5 mintues. Go into Settings > About Phone > Battery > Compare uptime vs awake. They should be AT LEAST 5 minutes apart.
If they're not, go to the market and install "Watchdog Task Manager" (<--this is NOT the same as ATK, again, lifehacker article on it) to monitor rouge apps.
Hope this helps!

My phone has been sitting and charging for ~2 hours, but up - awake = 5:12. Is it normal?
Great work, by the way.
There is no normal.
Up time is the elapsed time since you turned your phone on. (i.e. after the phone was completely off, not just screen off/sleep mode).
Awake time is suppose to only be the time your phone was actively being used (i.e. screen on).
So, Up time minus Awake time should equal the time your screen has been off, (i.e. asleep).
If Up time and Awake time are equal, and you've had the screen turned off (i.e. asleep) for part of that time, then you have some app that's staying active durning sleep mode.

I might reboot when I go to sleep tonight and do nothing on the phone, then check uptime vs awake when I wake up.
1300 Mah battery is not acceptable for a phone of this caliber. There are alternative options for battery's. I use setcpu to underclock the proc and I've seen a dramatic increase in battery life.

I've been using Setcpu as well, with 998 mhz while charging, 245 when screen off, 245-520 when hot or <20%, and 245-850 otherwise.
Agreed about the battery, HTC and VW probably want to force you to spend more on extended batteries.
Too bad, otherwise it'd be a perfect phone.
HTC usually seems to skimp on the battery. It really hurts their reviews but I suppose they can save costs and assume people can always buy an aftermarket battery. I don't agree with it but it's their business.
Anyway, that does sound like abnormally bad battery life, but I have a question - are you in a poor service area? If so, the radio might be working extra hard to acquire a signal. Even when I had my dumb phone Samsung alias (which had decent dumbphone battery life) I would experience complete battery drain if I left it in my poor coverage basement overnight.
Also, when you're browsing the web and such do you use wifi or 3g? I notice that when I continuously surf with 3g the phone starts to get warm, especially in mid-poor coverage areas. When the phone gets hot the battery gets hot, and when the battery gets hot it drains much much quicker. Of course, high power usage generates more heat so I'm inclined to believe our 3g radio consumes way more battery than our wifi radio.
Over the months I've combatted poor battery life by doing the following:
1. Purchase aftermarket batteries. I've fallen into HTC's trap. I bought an evo battery which can last me of 6-7 hours of wifi awake time and 4-5 hours of 3g awake time. I also purchased the extended 2150 battery from Verizon which I can get up to 10 hours of wifi surfing and 5-6 hours of 3g surfing. Back when I was on stock 1300 I would get 3-4 hours wifi surfing and 2-3 hours 3g surfing.
2. Install an undervolted kernel, if you're into that sorta thing. One of the main reasons I'm able to obtain the numbers above is due to my kernel which undervolts the processor. I use adrynalyne's experimental undervolted kernel and it works without a hitch. I use it in conjunction with setcpu so I can have a screen off profile which underclocks the processor to 128-384MHz while I'm not using it. The only caveat to using this kernel is you can only use the conservative CPU governor. This means lower clocked speeds will be preferred as the CPU actively scales itself, and will take longer to ramp up to the higher speeds. But we're talking about maximizing battery life so that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
3. Try to keep screen brightness down, minimize usage of other radios (Bluetooth, GPS). Sounds like you already do this though. Rogue apps have also been discussed but if awake time != uptime then that's usually not the case.
As also prevoiously mentioned, it is possible you have a defective battery and should go about getting a new one from them though I'm not sure how that process goes... someone here is bound to know though.

I definitely stand behind adrynalyne's experimental undervolted. You can find a link in the kernel thread on the android development section of this board. He makes a sense and AOSP version. I've tried some of the newer ones like Chad's but I love the longevity and stability of adrynalyne's too much to live with the switch. As aforementioned, if you decide to use setcpu, make sure to only use the conservative governer. Ondemand will cause it to freeze! Otherwise it's rock solid.

[Q] Crazy Power Consumption

Hey please don't tear my head off, Ive been looking through all the threads that I can, but haven't really found an answer.
So I got my g2 and left it stock for a couple of days and the battery did pretty good, meaning I didn't have to charge it during the day. I then rooted and flashed cm 6.1.1 stable and the battery was terrible it would drop about 1% every 5 min or worse if I was playing a game or using maps etc.
I tried switching to pershoot's cm_2632.28 012211 and it was just as bad. I then tried reverting to a back up of stock and it is still bad, I also tried RC4 and one of the nightlies, same problem. I tried wiping the battery stats with the instructions on cm's wiki, still terrible.
It is really frustrating to me and I have been looking around and it seems a lot of people are having trouble with battery life. I don't really want to buy another battery, and have tried removing anything on my phone that could use battery (widgets, apps, etc.) I also think it's odd that Cell Standby takes up the most battery.
So really what I want to know is does anyone have an idea of something for me to try? A mistake I might have made? Tip? Or am I just crazy in expecting my battery to last the day on stock?
Any help would be appreciated thanks
A lot of people who ran the cm rom seemed to have this problem I don't and I assume it only happened after cm and still occuring I think somethings wrong with cm's kernal idk but it seems like it shorts out the battery because I ran a wrong kernal on my stockrom and had terrible battery life.
Sent from George2.0 (G2)
The battery truly might be a dud... The fact that your Cell Standby consumes most of the power is probably normal because you said you stripped your phone of widgets, apps, etc.
My gf has a Wildfire and her first battery couldn't last more than a couple hours, and she's a fairly light user. She switched out the battery and now it's fine, goes for a couple days now..
I am running cm 6.1.1 oc to 1.2 I do not have this issue. Try a new battery maybe?
Which kernel are you using? And with what settings?
Kernel is toxygene #1, screen brightness auto, gps off, bluetooth off, Wifi only when I need it, "wcdma only" so I don't get any edge drop-offs, overclocked to 1.2ghz-368mhz screen on, 245mhz screen off. My battery will last 9-12 hours of normal use, that's a few calls, some txting, facebook, mp3s in the car on the drive home from work, and an hour or two of XDA. I unplug at for work at 10am, I let it die and charge from 0 every day..
Google sync every hour, weather widget sync 4 hours, facebook widget every hour. Those are all my widgets.
You should really upgrade to CM7 now. Pretty stable, and my battery life is SO MUCH BETTER. If I use my phone heavily I will lose about 30~40% during the ENTIRE DAY lol. So my battery with moderate usage will easily last 12 hours. Before I had the exact same battery life as yours.
Also, I'm using the UV kernel from pershoot.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
I'm on Virtuous v0.9.0 and I routinely get 12-15 hours a day out of my phone. That's with brightness set full, WiFi running (and usually connected), Tweetdeck, gmail, gtalk, etc all running with constant updates, etc.
If I pull it off the charger at 7a, by 7p I'm typically still around 20%, depending on how much extra use I've done (sms, voice calls, etc)
Yes, the newer version of virtuous is great on battery life and doesn't even have to be oc. I just flashed back to cm today to get everything up to date (I'm ocd like that and have to have all my ROMs current) and I too am having the cell standby issue with 70% battery after 2 hrs and light use. Just flashed the newest pershoots and letting it fully charge before I clear batt stats... will report back.
Have setcpu set to lowest with screen off and oc 1.2-346mhz

synchronization
I am using Visionary 0.9.0 and I had lousy battery life too, and have now either turned off background synchronization or at least made it very infrequent for all my apps that use it (facebook, peep/twitter, HTC Sense, HTC Hub, News, Weather, etc. etc.)
This has made a very big difference!
The biggest difference of all came from turning off synch within the HTC Sense and HTC Hub apps. These were having trouble connecting to their servers, and were constantly tying up my 3G signal causing battery drain. This change alone has almost doubled my battery life.
I recommend you check what is using wifi/3G and how much before we assign blame to kernel or ROM.
Also, I can recommend GreenPower app which turns off connectivity automatically when it's not needed, greatly extending battery life. However after a long period of using this successfuly, I have turned it off as I started having trouble "waking" my 3G connection during the day. Hopefully future updates will help with that app.
I had the same problem with my first G2 and after complaining/convincing T-Mobile it was defective, they sent me a replacement and that problem never came up again.
Alright I feel stupid but I was charging my phone with my bluetooth charger (didn't even think about it) but now I'm using the stock charger and my battery is lasting way longer. Night and day difference. I don't exactly understand why this would make such a difference in technical terms but eitherway major facepalm.

Horrible Battery life!! Any Advice?

Hello everyone, I lately have been getting horrible battery life!! I keep brightness on lowest setting, use wifi when possible, turn down haptic feedback all the way etc. do my best to save battery!
So my epic is Rooted with CWM3, and the latest frozen syndicate rom installed. Is it because my phone is rooted and the syndicate rom drains it more? is that why i have bad battery life? Does having your phone rooted drain battery life?
I ordered a Seidio 3300mah battery and got it yesterday in mail. Put in phone, then charged rest of night about it. Im using it today and am still receiving poor battery life, my friend who has epic ordered a cheap hong kong battery and is getting better battery life? I read something about conditioning your battery and draining it to 0% then charge fully to 100%? How does this work please explain?
Can someone just please help me use my new battery to its potential and help me out here?

Rooting and custom ROMs reduce battery usage. You need to supply more details. Are you overclocking...that burns up battery usage. Have you tried Spare Parts to see what is using your battery? Has 3G been out in your area and the phone is searching for a data signal?

I have noticed no difference in DK28, EB13 or EC05 in my battery life. Do the calibration suggested in the post above. As for ROMs it is about personal choice. I have been with Bonsai for awhile now. I hear the ACS ROMs are very stable. Syndicate Frozen is good, Midnight is good. Read the OPs, learn what they remove and improve and see if that is what you are looking for.
Running SRF 1.1, with a custom theme, brightness at lowest setting, haptic feedback all the way up, because I need to know if someone is calling, I regularly get 30+ hours per charge. The two Chinese knockoffs I have get about 26 or so hours per charge.
I have recently seen a drop in my battery, spare parts on a couple of occasions should my phone would not sleep. Sometimes a reboot would fix this, but reflashed just to be safe.
After the reflash I was still getting bad battery life but spare parts showed no issues, so I started doing the airplane toggle again and that seems to of fixed it.

whats spare parts?
Spare parts is a free program available in the market place. It shows you more detailed statistics on what is using your battery juice.
Undervolting maybe. But I got stablilty issues. ymmv anyway.
My advice is
1. Set max clock to 800mhz and min to 200mhz. The CPU is volted -75 over 1ghz and 200 is volted the same as 100mhz. I use the Conservative governer but Ondemand works well too.
2. Get a good custom rom/kernel. CM7 and Frankenstein got the best through all my testing.
3. Brightness at lowest, turn off "Notify me when Wifi networks are available", Turn off syncing for contacts, the two GPS options, etc.
4. Take out as many applications as possible(Personal preference. I think it makes a difference) But I mean stuff you don't use. I take out Bluetooth, GPS, DRM, SNS, and most stock applications. If you're using Handcent you don't need stock SMS and vice versa.
5. If you're on 2.2 and lower I recommend a program like JuiceDefender to turn off 3G when your screen is off. The latest update on the free version removed the option to filter applications using data while the screen is off.
6.Enable Airplane mode on boot up. Then turn it off and use normally. TWS
7. Definitly calibrate your battery.
8. *Insert unreasonable battery tip here*
Oh and spare parts can be installed directly from the market. It's a program that allows monitering and for changing animation speeds and such. I don't use it for anything. You should also be able to go into settings -> about phone -> battery usage and see most of what spare parts would.
is tht one thread the one guy posted to calibrate the battery? will it work?

Especially with a new 3300mAh battery! I recommend the top two as the third didn't work for me.
Juice defender on aggressive mode and setcpu on conservative mode increases my battery life when on standby quite a bit.
Don't drain your battery to zero it destroys our batteries. Don't use juice defender. If there is no reason that you need background data on like when you are sleeping turn it off but some say that's cheating but their idiots. That will dramatically improve your battery alone. Do the airplane shutdown every once in awhile some that's cosmetic but don't believe everything that is told to you. Only keep apps installed that you regularly use. Use spare parts to see if any app is causing significant drain. I'm a battery life guru.... ;-)

better battery life

I've been using CyanogenMOD 7 and love it (mostly). The one thing I don’t like about it is the short battery life. I'm kind of new to rooting phones so it took me a bit to get it rooted and get CM7 rolling. I was wondering if there are any mods out there like CM7 that have better battery life? Or if there's any thing I can add to CM7 to give it more batter life?
I've been using android since the first phone came out so I’m already knowledgeable in what to turn off to try and extend the battery life, but I have noticed a big decrees in batter since installing CM7.
Thanks for the help guys

You can under clock the processor when your phone is asleep. This creates better battery life.

your phone automatically underclocks your processor when it sleeps (for most CPU governors), you do not need to tell it to do so.
I'm not picking on you fyi, I'm just making sure we are giving people accurate information... there's only one thing worse than no information: incorrect/incomplete information.
op: which version of CM7 are you running? remember, the more minimal your setup (ie less homescreens, less widgets, manual syncing of gmail and whatever else, etc) the better your battery life will be. this is especially true of newer phones that are getting heftier cpu & gpus that, while intelligent with power consumption, are going to drain even larger capacity batteries relatively quick with moderate/heavy usage.
how long are we talking with battery life? how heavy a user are you? for reference, I get around 16 hours of battery life if I don't charge the phone at all from unplugging to battery dying with moderate to heavy usage (texting ~50 times a day, sometimes up to 100 emails depending on what's happening at work, couple hours of calls, couple hours of streaming music [pandora or audiogalaxy], couple of hours of games [peggle and plants v zombies mostly - both of which are resource hogs], etc).
I have just learned to get used to the fact that the phone is going to die if I use it a lot, so I've purchased three micro-usb cables and a car charger.. that way, unless I'm in an area where there is no charge-capable usb port nearby, I'm always able to get a little more juice if need be.

but i also mean setting the max sleep to 368mhz. by default its set at 800mhz. sometimes with apps running in the background, the processor may go to 800mhz without you knowing
check out 'powersave' and set your cpu max to 806mhz. should last you a nice long time like that. responsiveness suffers, of course.
'ondemand' and 806mhz is the best comprimise for me. still fine with HDvideo recording, streaming audio, Nav, etc
if you really want to make it last... clock down to 400mhz, turn off all the sync, set brightness and timeout to minimum, all the radios off (airplane mode), and the volume down, on vibrate.

But some govenors don't drop the sleep to the lowest profile. In fact almost all keep it above the lowest clock. Other kernels allow it and you can also use third party to set it lower. When the tweaKr script becomes universal it will be even better =)

It suffers in powersave because it stays at the lowest setting only. No reason to set to 806. Lol and that bottom comment is hella funny =), but if he does that his phone will just be...a waste of pocket space.
Your best bet is to do some research on kernels. If you are using cm7 to cm 7.0.3 id recommened pyros kernel. If you are on 7.1 or a nightly over 121 I believe id go with eugene's streamline5. It did wonders for mine Also there is a battery saving tips. Google G2 battery saving tips. Should be first link that comes up.
Cyanogenmod roms are known to be battery hungry. Nom nom nom.

Mugen 3600mah = better battery life...
Can you elaborate on what kind of battery life you are getting now? How many hours, and for what level of usage?
How long have you been on CM? It takes a couple charge cycles of the battery after flash any ROM, for the battery meter to be accurate. Clear battery stats (as mentioned) then charge to 100%, let drain to about 20%, repeat a couple times. Don't drain until the phone dies. Some people say to do this, and its not good advice. Over discharge of Li ion batteries can cause them to no longer take a charge. There are people on here, on the Vision and other phones, that let their battery drain to empty, then the phone would no longer boot, forcing them to replace the battery.

[Q] Horrible EVO 4G Battery Life no matter WHAT I do!

I've about had it with my EVO 4G. I can barely use the thing before the battery is down to 30% or lower. When I first unplug it in the morning, I'll browse reddit or XDA for all of 5-10 minutes and my battery will go down to 75% easily. I've tried tons of ROMs (running Energy w/Shooter Anthrax kernel as I heard it got amazing battery life) I've tried resetting the battery stats -- i've tried unplugging and replugging in the phone multiple times when the charge light is green, I've tried just about everything I can find on here dealing with battery issues and to no avail! Listed in my battery stats the only thing that's ever high is my Display usage but even factoring that in should I really only be getting an hour or two of mild internet usage before my battery is completely depleted? I can barely make it through a 6 hour work day (checking texts on breaks, light internet, maybe a 5 minute phone call) without having to recharge it in my car.
I'm open to ANY suggestions short of buying a new battery -- sadly it's not an option at the moment.
Do you keep 4G on? That drains a battery like nothing else if left on. Same with GPS, especially in Sense Roms for some reason.

i recommend using a aosp rom if battery life is a MUST. I would suggest you use Decks aosp rom with CoD tweaks Tiamat 3.7.7 and vipermod and underclock to 500 on smartass governor........all this is what you should do if you choose decks rom
Make sure your 4G is off, but Evo is known for its horrible battery but thats ridiculous. Try a new kernal to adjust to CPU settings. If that doesn't work, you might need a new battery. Evos are know for having their battery fried easily, mine fried and I had to get a new battery. :/
You should definitely make sure your 4g, Gps, Wifi, and blue tooth is off. If that does not work I would strongly suggest you downloading Cyanogenmod 7.1. When you aren't using the phone under clock it and do medium speed when you are using it. I last around 8-9 hours doing this. Hope it helps.
Okay I installed Decks Evo GB rom and the Tiamat 3.3.7 kernel. I followed the guides but couldn't seem to do the undervolting correctly with the apps i was provided...but i'll do some testing and report back!
Can someone point me in the direction of the right app for undervolting and whatnot?

vipermod is used for undervolting http://vipermod.tiamat-dev.com/vipermod-voltage-control/
Also, it could just be that your battery is tired. Is it at all swollen, in the least bit or rock hard? It should feel firm, but give a little.
People tell me all the time, "my battery is not holding a charge", it's not designed to. But, how it releases the charhe, is another story. Obviously, it's also dependant on use. Remember, the phone is only rated at 5 hours talk time. I can't think of a time I've actually tried that, but when I have been caught on the phone for extended periods I've only gotten at most 2 hours of conversation out of a full battery.

I had an Evo, loved it,but the battery was trash, even when I bought my 3500 mah battery, the juice in it wouldn't last a whole day, sorry man, there's just no hope for that phone, without undervolting properly

my battery doesnt last too bad in my evo. granted not like the old days, but i do get about 12-15 hours on a 1700 mah battery and a powerskin charging case with a built in 1500 mah battery. This is in a poor service area.. constantly switching into and out of roaming. i keep 4g, wifi, mobile network all off and screen brightness at about 25%.. this is with moderate txt, some light game play, occasional turn on 3g to check email and browse web. im expecting better now thzt i am rooted with energy rom and anthrax kernel.
