Another battery life question... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a buddy with a droid x that gets RIDICULOUS battery life. What is it that causes such a difference in endurance? I mean most of the other specs basically match up... Is it htc related? Can I get "droid-like" battery life somehow? I'm on fresh 3.3 with netarchy 4.1.9.1 bfs

I havent played much with the DroidX but from what I have read it has a power profile managment on it much like a laptop . I believe that is the part Motorola put in the phone . Profiles like LONGER BATTERY LIFE , or MORE PERFORMANCE . Something Im kinda surprised the EVO wasnt given but I make it thorugh the day on one charge

Are you rooted?

Please keep in mind the apps you downloaded and the widgets you have set-up on your screens. Some apps require to be run in the background eventhough they are NOT used by you at the time, such as Google Talk, Qik, Fring, pedometer, and anything that needs to be "ON"...thats one of the culprit on battery drain you might want to look into.
Having one widget per homescreen is ideal, in my opinion..and learned that by having multiple widgets in one screen, is another culprit in battery drain due to it requiring to work upfront, for example, Facebook widget needs to be on constantly and updated for as long as that widget is there, regardless if you touched/used it or not.
Now, for the MOST OBVIOUS part...turning off GPS, WiFi, 4G, and bs when you DON'T need them, by following hot sexy COMMON SENSE, you should get AT LEAST 3 hours more on your battery. Pure sexy common sense LOL ;-)

Greetings,
I couldn't agree more with all the things you noted in your reply.
I rooted mine, and deleted many apps I don't use, but insisted on starting up
even if I had already killed them in the manage applications section.
But I was amazed at how short the life was in spite of having done that. I quickly
discovered (as you noted) that keeping 4G on, drains the batt.
In fact, for me anyway, it really drains the batt!
Just thought I'd mention it, because it was really surprising to me just how bad
an affect on the battery 4G was - bummer.
--Chris

Mine usually gets between 36-55 hours on a charge (record is 58 so far) with about 3-5 hours of "use" on the stock battery. I don't use it to play games or watch movies, just phone, internet, email, etc - widgets all over the place. Gmail push is always on as well. In fact, I unplugged it last at 10:50pm on the 28th (34 hours ago) and I'm at 48% still.
The biggest thing I've found is download setCPU and adjust the CPU frequency to 245 MHz when the screen is off. That saves a lot. Other then that I keep it at 998 MHz (max speed) all other times. I am playing around with tasker and turning airplane mode on while I sleep, but that seems to have a minimal effect, saving around 2% over 8 hours. I use tasker to turn GPS off unless I'm using one of my GPS-enabled programs, although that doesn't seem to do much either.
I'm running just a basic sense rom with a stock kernel, nothing special. rooted with clockworkmod and that's all I've done rom/kernel-wise.
If you actually use your phone a lot I'm not sure there's much you can do besides get a bigger battery. If you just use it mostly as a phone and less as a PMP or gaming device you should be able to get some nice results.
EDIT: Oh yea, and don't use a task killer (I don't). From what I've read those can actually cause the phone to consume MORE power as services are being killed and opened constantly. Android is very good about leaving tasks open in the background without them consuming power. Opening and closing them constantly is another story.

I wish I could figure this out too. I've been switching between a ton of kernels and roms and can't seem to find anything with good battery life. My phones been unplugged for about 2 1/2 hours and I'm at 53% battery life. No widgets running and just average usage.
Running virusrom and kings #9 and a lot of other roms and battery life is a joke.

So far, the best battery combo I've found is fresh 3.2 with it's stock rom and I returned to it last night. Some say 3.3 is as good or better but I can't seem to get those same results...
But my real question is, why is the droid able to get such great life?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

My phone stays basically plugged in while I'm at work I'm running fresh 3.3 and kings#9 I thought they are suppose to get decent life but not mine I even have it underclocked oh well I guess thank god for car chargers and extension cords lol

What I have found to help most of all is to NOT use the Mail app - it drains the battery like crazy, especially if you are popping several accounts. Instead, use the gmail client and set it up to pop your other accounts, and push them to you. This literally trippled my battery life. And it is way faster than the 15 minute intervals that the mail app gives you. Give it a shot, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Serious battery drain :(

I got my Desire in april and ever since I've never managed to get the battery to last more than a day.
I've tried different ROMs (Defrost, OpenDesire with and without Sense, MoDaCo r4, DJDroid, Neophyte, Pays-rom 2.1) but it's always the same: almost no drain in sleep mode but as soon as I turn the screen on and start using it the battery goes down ~20% every hour. I don't believe that's normal since some people get 3-4 days out of their battery.
For example, today my phone has been on for 2½ hours and lost 43% battery with WiFi on, just surfing the net and using Tapatalk.
The screen brightness is fixed at 30%, auto-sync off, bluetooth off, network mode set to WCDMA only and I have good 3G reception where I live.
I have no clue what to do, maybe someone else does?
I have the same life spend for my battery. I think its quite normal for desire. Unless I'm abnormal too : x

You can use setCPU to underclock the processor or to create rules to make it powersaver.
I (as many other people) have one for setting the max/min processor to 245MHz when the screen is off, so it doesnt waste so much battery. I havent tested a lot, since I did it yesterday but the battery is lasting longer.
Also there are different ROMs that have better battery life...

With Ultimate Juice installed, I saw an increase of up to 2.5x.

I've tried it but it's not helping since I'm not syncing anything automatically anyway and the battery isn't drained with screen off.
It's when I start using the phone my battery percentage goes bananas.
And btw I know how you feel, I live in Sweden and we don't have paid apps here. Thank god for MarketAccess.

My Desire was acting like that during my first 2 days of usage. The battery was draining really fast even in standby mode. I installed advanced task killers and after that the battery improved. I do not know if it is because this app or there were some other configurations that I accidentally did...
But the battery life right now is way better than before (even lasts longer than my previous iphone 3gs). Hope this helps =D
I have pretty decent battery life and I use the stock unrooted unmodified rom. Some apps completely obliterate battery life. I used to keep eBuddy open, but I found that it kills my battery faster then anything else.

Hmm, when you say "just surfing the net", you're actually using WiFI + AMOLED + CPU, which are 3 of the biggest battery drains on the device.
IME, you can get days out of the phone, but if you actually have the screen turned on all of the time (i.e. you're actually using the phone), then 20% per hour probably isn't that insane. After all, that's 5 hours of continuous use, which isn't too awful from a modern smart phone.
Honestly, I think the answer might be "Yes, it does that" and "you'll probably need to charge it during the day". I've taken to charging mine on the way to work and back again (about 45 mins each way) and I'm still at 90% at bedtime.
Oh, and forget JuiceDefender. Yes, it makes a difference...but only when the screen is turned off. As soon as you start using it (and that's what you're obviously doing here), it shifts out of the way. Once I realised this, I uninstalled it...never looked back.
Daern
Oh, couple of other notes. Bluetooth doesn't make that much difference unless you're actually using it. 3G uses quite a bit more power compared to 2G. Consider switching to 2G when you're on WiFi. (sadly, no automated way to do this )
i am not using any of these tools.
i have wifi always on 3g on
no live wallpaper and push mail (k-9) with 2 accounts
my battery lasts 1,5-2 days. with phone turned off during the night. 0am till 7am.
i am surfing a lot and writing a lot emails.

Here comes a hint:
Turn off ALL unnecessary widgets like "Bluetooth", "GPS", "WiFi". Turn off also "Mobile"-internet widget, and turn it on only when u want to update some apps or check your mail.
I have noticet that "Mobile"-internet widget drains hell of a lot battery, but if u turn it off now and then u will have ure phone, like I had, for 6 days - with one charge!

Which ROM has the best battery life?

I have searched and read thru 100s of the threads in the dev section. Im running the Baked Snack Rom now and no matter what kernel i use, battery life is horrible. I have ran the AVA rom and had the same issue. Is there any Rom that battery life is decent with or is this a phone issue. And by horrible i mean from being off the charger 30 minutes the phone drops to half battery. By 2 hours its getting the message to put it on the charger. Any help or suggestions will be apprciated.

Backed Snacks 9.7 (2.1 Eclair) has legendary battery life.
what froyo rom has the best battery life?
For me it was fresh(3.1.0.1) I notice that the Handcent messaging app, is great and all, kills a lot of battery. I had two evos for about a week and tried to do some battery testing and for me handcent was the big problem. My usage is about 25mb of data daily (not counting tethering), like 50+ txt easy, and like 20 calls. After all that I still get around 10+ battery by the end of the day. My day is from 11am to 2am

I'm running nerchey's (Yes, I know, I miss spelled that) rom and kernel. Better battery life than I got with fresh's and all the features of the phone work.
I doubt its the ROMs.. try looking at your partial wake usage..
So far the main two I've used has had excellent battery. Fresh 3.1.0.1 and DC 3.5 with battery saver profile.
But ROMs I use net's kernels, but I don't overclock.

Ok i think this is part of the problem. I downloaded this program from the market called Battery History. When i check click on running, its basically showing that the phone never goes to sleep. I downloaded the program onto my vibrant and compared the two. After 6hours It shows "time spent without sleeping". For the evo is 6 hours and the vibrant its only 35 minutes. So it looks like the Evo is never going to "sleep" even when the screen turns off. Anyone else having this same issue?

I'm going to check it out, if thats true then it would explain the amount of drain happening across the EVO's that have been released. If there is a possible fix I wonder how long the average life on one charge would be.
Sounds like you might have an app that's constantly running in the background. Try rebooting the phone, and after it comes back on turn the screen off for a minute or two, then turn the screen back on and check your battery history. If it shows running at 100% then you need to find out what app is causing that. About a week ago there was an issue with the facebook app, and also Fring used to keep my phone from sleeping until I deleted it.

i think baked snack 1.4 with kernel 2 is the best froyo rom for battery life. i let it sit overnight with wifi on, in 9 hours only 7% drop
Man if only someone made some unified test to see which ROM has the best battery life... o wait there is, check my sig if you would like to help fill in the battery tests for your ROM.
2 hours of battery life though doesn't sound like the ROMs fault or an apps fault for wake-ups, it is probably bad battery.
Definitely a bad battery, I have done my worse trying to drain a battery and even using all the wireless I could with constant GPS and streaming pandora to bluetooth couldnt kill it in two hours. Instead of returning your phone you could try buying an extra battery and then sending your old one back saying it is defective. Currently I use two stock evo batteries with a wall charger for the batts and never have to plug my phone in, I just keep the spare in my wallet and swap them out when one dies.

I just saw in another post of the same topic but with a different phone. This guy said he tried getting rid of everything. on his phone's home screen, then added things one by one. the one that made the phone not sleep was the calendar widget. Surprisingly, I have the same problem and the calendar widget on my phone. Simply remove the widget. You can still put a shortcut to the app, just not the widget. Use any task killer to kill the calendar. Problem fixed.

Running Evo Deck 1.2.1, display at 12%, couple widgets, data off (using wifi at home) , sync off, and all of that. Underclocked, undervolted too.

Battery calibration is very important, don't know how I lived without it
Setting the VM heap to 48 allows the dalvik garbage collector to run less, improving battery
Chainfire 3d helps with anything graphical, makes home using lwps smoother, games run better etc, also saves battery by making all animations, graphics processing more efficient
If you use apps2sd bumping the cache makes it faster, and more efficient saving battery
Also updating to the latest radios etc, and making sure your prls and profile is up to date is essential, many aosp users, formerly including my self forget about that stuff
I've spent a huge amount of time expirementing with different setups, I think I've found my phones sweet spot
I have loads of friends with rooted evos, mine has the best battery and is typically fastest (chainfire 3d) makes everything snappier
Maybe with all of this info you can test these apps / settings and find your phones sweet spot. Good luck man

InteractiveX governor, 245-1113mhz
No setCPU.
no juice defender
no taskkiller.
no 4g - no gps - no wifi
blutooth ON
3g always ON.
battery calibrated is a must
display set to manual around 33% brightness. but i change it on the fly (swipe the notif bar).
Now the results are pretty interesting here:
With the stock battery and all the above; if the reception is good, i can go for 2 days with moderate usage. yes i know i night i sleep, so it idles nicely.
If the signal is not so good, it will destroy the battery, and can't really get anything more than 13hours.
My typical use:
unplug at 10am.
use the phone normally.
plug it back in at midnight that night, and i would have between 35% or up to 67% battery left in the phone, depending on the factors mentioned.
Which to me, going all day is all i wanted before i started tweaking. Mission accomplished.
The quality of the reception is a killer, i'll tell you.
I bought a 3500mah battery from the same company, and it is trash.
are there any extended batteries that fit in an otterbox commuter case?

better battery life

I've been using CyanogenMOD 7 and love it (mostly). The one thing I don’t like about it is the short battery life. I'm kind of new to rooting phones so it took me a bit to get it rooted and get CM7 rolling. I was wondering if there are any mods out there like CM7 that have better battery life? Or if there's any thing I can add to CM7 to give it more batter life?
I've been using android since the first phone came out so I’m already knowledgeable in what to turn off to try and extend the battery life, but I have noticed a big decrees in batter since installing CM7.
Thanks for the help guys

your phone automatically underclocks your processor when it sleeps (for most CPU governors), you do not need to tell it to do so.
I'm not picking on you fyi, I'm just making sure we are giving people accurate information... there's only one thing worse than no information: incorrect/incomplete information.
op: which version of CM7 are you running? remember, the more minimal your setup (ie less homescreens, less widgets, manual syncing of gmail and whatever else, etc) the better your battery life will be. this is especially true of newer phones that are getting heftier cpu & gpus that, while intelligent with power consumption, are going to drain even larger capacity batteries relatively quick with moderate/heavy usage.
how long are we talking with battery life? how heavy a user are you? for reference, I get around 16 hours of battery life if I don't charge the phone at all from unplugging to battery dying with moderate to heavy usage (texting ~50 times a day, sometimes up to 100 emails depending on what's happening at work, couple hours of calls, couple hours of streaming music [pandora or audiogalaxy], couple of hours of games [peggle and plants v zombies mostly - both of which are resource hogs], etc).
I have just learned to get used to the fact that the phone is going to die if I use it a lot, so I've purchased three micro-usb cables and a car charger.. that way, unless I'm in an area where there is no charge-capable usb port nearby, I'm always able to get a little more juice if need be.

but i also mean setting the max sleep to 368mhz. by default its set at 800mhz. sometimes with apps running in the background, the processor may go to 800mhz without you knowing
check out 'powersave' and set your cpu max to 806mhz. should last you a nice long time like that. responsiveness suffers, of course.
'ondemand' and 806mhz is the best comprimise for me. still fine with HDvideo recording, streaming audio, Nav, etc
if you really want to make it last... clock down to 400mhz, turn off all the sync, set brightness and timeout to minimum, all the radios off (airplane mode), and the volume down, on vibrate.
;-)

But some govenors don't drop the sleep to the lowest profile. In fact almost all keep it above the lowest clock. Other kernels allow it and you can also use third party to set it lower. When the tweaKr script becomes universal it will be even better =)

It suffers in powersave because it stays at the lowest setting only. No reason to set to 806. Lol and that bottom comment is hella funny =), but if he does that his phone will just be...a waste of pocket space.
Your best bet is to do some research on kernels. If you are using cm7 to cm 7.0.3 id recommened pyros kernel. If you are on 7.1 or a nightly over 121 I believe id go with eugene's streamline5. It did wonders for mine Also there is a battery saving tips. Google G2 battery saving tips. Should be first link that comes up.
Cyanogenmod roms are known to be battery hungry. Nom nom nom.

Mugen 3600mah = better battery life...
Can you elaborate on what kind of battery life you are getting now? How many hours, and for what level of usage?
How long have you been on CM? It takes a couple charge cycles of the battery after flash any ROM, for the battery meter to be accurate. Clear battery stats (as mentioned) then charge to 100%, let drain to about 20%, repeat a couple times. Don't drain until the phone dies. Some people say to do this, and its not good advice. Over discharge of Li ion batteries can cause them to no longer take a charge. There are people on here, on the Vision and other phones, that let their battery drain to empty, then the phone would no longer boot, forcing them to replace the battery.

Improving battery life?

Note to mods: I copy pasted this question from another forum to get different answers. I am the same person, please be lenient.
Hello, I would like to improve my Evo's battery, because a few texts, a minute in the browser, and just scrolling through my email brings me down to 60-ish percent battery.
I'm running the latest MIUI with Tiamat 4.0.1 or something like that. I am also running JuiceDefender Ultimate.
My screen brightness is also at a constant low, too. I should have done more research on this phone, as I'm stuck with it for another 1.5 years. It sucks. :/
My friend's iPhone lasts for so much longer, it doesn't have a larger screen, but still..
What can I do to improve my battery?

You can undervolt with vipermod

I've never used MIUI so I don't know what options you have for kernels, I imagine all AOSP Gingerbread kernels, but if I were you in would try out different kernels, even a different version of Tiamat could help. You can also try calibrating your battery.
If none of that helps, try switching roms.

And hit that thanks button if I managed to help.
I've already calibrated my battery.
Won't ViperMOD hurt my battery?
There's always the obvious. Turn off what you don't need - GPS, 3G, wifi, Bluetooth, etc. I assume that Juice Defender helps with that but I've never used it. If you can use wifi instead of 3g then you should, it saves a lot of battery. If you're in a low coverage area, that will kill your battery as well. Going through your installed apps and uninstalling the ones you don't use will help as well. Back them up with TB first if you want to save their data or easily reinstall them later. Check your sync settings, if you have social networking apps set to sync every few minutes then that's also going to chew through your battery. Using push notifications instead of regular syncing can help - try FriendCaster if you use Facebook.
I'm also running MIUI with Tiamat 4.1.0 SBC. If you're not using SBC then you may want to try it out, it can help with your battery life. I ultimately gave up on sacrificing functionality for battery life. Instead I bought 3 extra 1500 mah batteries which came with an external charger. All together it was $11 on Ebay with free shipping, took about two weeks to get here. If you decide to go that route, you can just run the battery down and put in a new one... your friend's iPhone can't do that
I still use an SBC kernel even though my battery isn't usually charged through my phone. If I forget to charge my batteries or something, I'll sometimes put the phone on the charger when it gets down to 80-90% and charge it back up. When I do that the battery lasts all day and I don't have to switch batteries.
You can also buy an extended battery, but I didn't want a fat phone. I get just as much juice - if not more - from my cheap 1500s.
Supersonic Evo 4G | MIUI | Tapatalk
I'd recommend looking up Car-O-Dope's tweaks, it's helped me be able to run the governor at 128mhz-652mhz and not sacrifice any performance. This has saved my battery life. This guide will have you download rom toolbox and system tuner, and in system tuner you can undervolt your battery as well without having to run the Vipermod scripts. In rom toolbox I changed the wifi scan interval to the max amount of time possible, and changed the wifi sleep policy to never. I leave wifi on at all times, keeping the 3g off. My battery has never been better.

This ^^^. Especially checking your accounts and sync settings
I just found a battery calibration the other day in viperboy's rom thread in e3d thread. Check that out n try it. I'm on the last part now so we will c how it goes.

So is this normal?
I put it to charge overnight, then earlier today. Would be dead by now if I hadn't today.

I don't think the Android System should be using that much battery. Mine has always been around 2 to 4 percent.

I seem to be having battery issues as of late. Been running Cyanogenmod 7.1 for sometime now...maybe 6 months lol havne't been on here in a while. I leave the 3G radio off due to it sucking battery faster than anything else. Here is what my battery currently says..
11h 11m 24s on battery
Android System--32%
cell standby--32%
Phone idle--30%
Voice Calls--5%
Display--3%
Do these look right to anyone? I would think that if someone turned off all data like myself and only used the phone for texting shouldn't it last all day? I'm lucky to get 15 hours sometimes....I have turned off everything. Bluetooth, Wifi, 3G, all syncing is disabled. I do notice when I turn the 3G radio back on the battery will almost instantly drop 10-15 percent within a couple of minutes...
