[Q] Root help:"Main version older"

Hey ive been trying to root my evo all day it is on version 2.1-update1. I was able to root my brothers perfectly fine using the downloads and tutorial from the idiot-proof guide to rooting by thebiles. But on mine I get stuck right at the beginning, when i try to flash the PC36IMG my bootloader says main version older. I feel like ive tried everything if anyone can help I'd reallly appreciate it thanks.

Try simple root, and keep trying. I got that same error even with simple root on my buddies 3 times before it worked. Don't know why. Maybe try copying the pc36img to the sd card instead of letting simple root push it...gl!

I agree with the simple root approach. Not trying to highjack your post but I have a question back at you if I may. You say you have one root EVO and one not root? If so the the root has PRI 1.34 and the nonroot 1.40? Could you perhaps do a data speed comparison on these and post the results? I am real curious...

one more quick question while PC36IMG was flashing the 2nd "tp" file said bypassed next to it rather than OK like all the others and the first tp had a blank next to it...is this a problem i should look into before unlocking the nand and all that other good stuff?

No problem glad you got it working. This was kinda like going to the casino...getting up to go to the bathroom...coming back to see someone hit the jackpot on your machine....hahaha!!!

thanks man appreciate it...one more question for anyone that can help, im using the idiot proof guide and im on step 56 but when i try to enter the adb shell i get an error from command prompt saying "error: more than one device and emulator" i entered the shell perfectly fine like 2 steps before that and used it to flash the new pc36img rom but now i get this error to enter shell again how do i fix this error?

Okay I came here thinking this might finally be it... but nope I tried all the solutions mentioned here but to no avail. I am frustrated and still getting the main version is older. Does anyone know what is causing this error. Please I'm using usb debugging I wiped and backed my SD and have ota that came out in June. I installed Microsoft net frame and htc drivers. I updated simple root and the update log said this was to fix the error but still getting the same error. Any suggestions

I got to work FINALLY!!!!!
So finally i got the main version error older NO MORE. So i decided to share what i did in hopes that it will work for all of you frustrated out there.
1) Download simple root from xda forum, dont download it anywhere else. The first time i tried i downloaded it at another android forum and even though it may seem the same, this version for some reason was not pushing the files as it suppose to. So again download from forum. Search for it on XDA.
2) Be patient and prepare yourself.
3) Make sure you on the 147 ota version. Not froyo. or before any version before ota because you can use old simple root.
4) After you download it extract it to a folder. Choose whatever location suits you i like desktop so i can delete file after i use it and keep zip. Be sure to update the program. Open it and let it search for downlaod or go to root folder and search for the updater.
5) Before running the program check the obvious. Is usb debugging enable, Do i have microsoft netframe, Are my phone drivers correct. Is the usb cable correctly connected to my computer and phone. Did i choose charge only when connected to the computer.
6) Now on your phone, and this step did it for me, go to Settings>SDandPhoneStorage>FactoryDataReset. Brace yourself this will wipe data it will not change your version. But if you want do a backup the folder of your contacts and whatever you have in your SD card, this is the time to do so. Mount as disk drive, and remember to change back to CHARGE ONLY. I skipped this because rooting was more important than my girlfriends phone number.
7) Now youre noobiness is ready connect phone double check Step 5. In case you missed something.
8) Run the simple root downloaded from XDA forum. Wait for it to push files is wont take long but me patient. Think of it passing 180mb to sd card so it takes some time.
9) Phone will reboot in a screen with skating androids Push power button and WAIT. It will find file and you shouldnt be getting "main version older" reboot error you where getting if you paid close attention to detail. Now update push volume up.
10) Why so impatient wait for it to update files. Once its down just push volume up for reboot. First time it reboots after root or when u flash a rom it usually takes longer, enough to get u nervous but dont be WAIT.
11) Easy sailing now but youre not done yet. Hit recovery once your phone reboot. Choose the method you want i chose Clockwork it works just fine for flashing roms.
12) Congrats your fully root and can flash that cool rom youve been reading about. Suggestions: DamageControl or Cyanogen but go ahead and try whichever you like.
13) YOURE DONE WOOF
If for some reason, it happened to me with AvaFroyo, when you flash your rom it goes on a loop and keeps rebooting dont panic that is what the recovery is for just put your microSD on a card reader delete the rom that is giving you problem and place another one and Reflash. Read how to flash rom you have to wipe on Recovery menu everytime you flash a different rom.

I rooted mt desire with lee driod but I am facing problem in flash contents on websites , they are not getting displayed and I am unable to uninstall and install flash player again , even if I install flash 10.1 file nothing happens
all the buttons are disabled on application management screen for that and its not working fine also ....
I want to restore to original software (HTC Original) how can I do that ...???

flash works fine for me with leedroid, please respect the developers and there hard work, dont call there roms useless because you are too much off a noob to remove installflashplayer.apk from /system/app/ and install it manually.....

Sorry for that I did not knew these things are so important
I tried removing the file thru file manager but as it is write protected cannot be removed .... is thr ne other process to remove
Also shud I install ROM again , I hav clockmod in phone , is everything needs to be wiped out

How Can I Root my Motorola Defy? all the other threads are from last years, any new way to root it?

I have used SuperOneClick... Rooted my Defy I recently bought then I un-rooted ha ha. That was just so easy that I'm kind of leary about it, so I'm looking for more ways to root than just one click software.

I can confirm that this works on the defy.
1 . Copy the apk over via usb.
2. Then install some kind of file manager from th market
3. You will have to turn on Settings -> Applications -> Unknown Sources
The problem is once you do this ROM MANAGER reports the wrong device so I am not confident to let it flash the recovery image.
If you figure out how to get a recovery image on there let me know.
I suspect flashrec.apk (http://code.google.com/p/flashrec/downloads/list) would work but didn't get a chance to try it before the owner of the Defy left.

Well I re-rooted again after some more searching... Just to have root.
SuperOneClick 1.7 (after root, reboot, than update busybox)
I have yet to try ROMs as I want to make sure I can recover from unforeseen flash failure 110%
On my spare time I try to read up on backing up stock firmware and trying to decide best backup method.
Also I read some where about using defy recovery for flashing... Could be wrong.
But so far all I did was overclock my defy from 300/600/800 to 300/600/1200 on stock firmware. If you want more info on my stock rom pm me, should goto my phone.
Willing to be experiment as long as my phone keeps working.

Hi, rooting your device is really easy, you just download "Superoneclick" on your pc, connect your device through USB cable and select "Debug USB" from Settings-Apps-development...then just click on "root" and after a short while...rooted!
It should work!

i try the whole ##34242# and nothing happens? i was running rooted cyonogen or something then i went to stock and still a no go. anyone have a idea for me?

Is because the diagnostic mode doesn't work on AOSP roms! EPST in general doesn't work in AOSP so no ## code is going to work!
Try to flash a sense rom like Sprint Lovers or anything that has EPST build into it!

that's because it's ##3424# NOT ##34242# OK!!!!
and if that does not work and you have root check out this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034373
you will need terminal emulator from the market give it super user permissions and it should work

thanks for the replies guys , i will try that soon but what happened was this now : (first let me say that im very very pissed off lol, i did the ##3424# and it worked like a charm but heres what happened...im following a tut somewhere and they said that it was ##34242# so i assumed it was my phone which was rooted with cyonegen or whatever lol...now i did something but long story even shorter: its back to stock rom no super user and usb notifications doesnt come out when i connect the phone. just a message saying qualcom blah blah MSM.
and my sd card isnt reading either from the phone

should i run unrevoked via fastboot or hboot or whatever? because the pc doesnt detect it on usb mode ?

Maybe u should just ruu back to stock n c if everything is working. If not take it to sprint. If is then reroot

so please can someone help me to give me links of a custom rom where i can download an other rom with arabic support and with HTC sense and step by step how to install and flash the phone. i searched in the forum but i cant find anything i dont know how

here is ur arabic rom buddy.....
to instal a rom u have to download rom manager in ur dhd
then go in the rom manager and check if the FLASH CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY IS 5.0.2.0
if not then just click on the first option in rom manager and u will see a pop up select desire hd and wait till another pop up says FLASH CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY IS UP TO DATE OR 5.0.2.0( make sure u have internet connection on ur dhd)
then go to option INSTAL ROM FROM SD CARD( make sure the rom u want to instal is in ur sd card an u know where u have place it)
then select ur rom and a pop up window will ask some options select all of
them and click ok
there u go it will reboot into recovery and start instaling ur rom
MAKE SURE U BACK UP UR ALL DATA , WHICH IS ON PHONE MEMORY. DONT WORRY ABOUT SDCARD DATA ITS SAFE UNLESS U FORMAT IT.

Since somebody already installed another ROM for you, ClockworkMod or 4EXT recovery will be there already.
First turn off the phone, remove the battery and then reinsert. That way you know the phone is completely off.
Hold down the volume DOWN button, and then hold down the power button. You will get to a white screen with some options. It takes a while to load so be patient.
When it loads, use the volume keys to select Recovery and then press the Power button to select Recovery.
When that loads, please tell us if it is ClockworkMod or 4EXT Recovery that is installed. It will say at the top.
After you tell us this we will be able to help you further
If you follow our instructions nothing will go wrong. And if for some reason it does, it will definitely be recoverable.

hi . thank you a lot for your fast answer i did like you said i switch off the phone after i took off the battery and i turn it on hold the button and recovery i did but when i press the power button to select recovey it come something like a mobile pictures with red symbol like on the picture down
so what i have to do please. i call the man who did my phone he said that my phone is not rooted.. so how can i rooted please??

Anyway, to root first we will need your software number (a number that is in the format x.xx.xxx, such as 2.50.405)
Go to Settings -> About Phone -> Software Information.
There are currently 2 ways to root it, one is quick and easy but (personally) I think it is more unreliable. The other way takes longer and is a bit more work but is guaranteed to work (depending on the software version). I will explain more about this when you can show me your software number

Summary: 1) Download Paul's Visionary+ tool (I have used version r12) (google removed this app from market) so You will have to download it from Paul's website. This tools enables root and removes new HTC protection. 2) Install engineering version of HBOOT to get S-Off (HTC bootloader, something like BIOS for Your PC) This step is optional and it's not required in order to flash custom ROM's on Your DHD but gives You more freedom with Your device. 3) Install custom recovery image (recovery is special program which is invoked from HBOOT in order to flash ROM onto Your device.
Detailed description: 1) Download Paul's Visionary+ tool 1.1) Click here to download http://android.modaco.com/content/ht...ne-click-root/ or download it from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...3&d=1290501865 1.2) Install Visionary+ on Your DHD 1.3) Run it, enable "Set system r/w after root 1.4) Click "Temproot Now!" - Wait until it's finished 1.5) Click Attempt Permroot Now! 1.6) DHD automatically reboot's To test that everything went fine download from market application "terminal emulator" run it, type su If You get after that sign # it mean's that everything went fine.
Time for next step!
2) Install engineering version of HBOOT to get S-Off 2.1) Download sfjuocekr DHD script for flashing HBOOT from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835746 2.2) Unzip it and copy it to Your SDCard (It's important that You have on Your SDCard root directory with name DHD and all files inside this directory. Rename DHD-smart folder on Your SDCARD to DHD. 2.3) Run Terminal Emulator 2.4) Type su 2.5) Type "sh /sdcard/DHD/check (Please be aware that You have to type "sh" in front of command) 2.6) If everything went OK type sh /sdcard/DHD/backup 2.7) If this also went OK proceed with sh /sdcard/DHD/hboot This command will install engineering hboot which have S-Off turned off.
3) Install custom recovery image 3.1) Since ROM manager now officially support's Desire HD, we will use it to download and install custom clockwork image. 3.2) Run android market app on Your DHD and download and install ROM Manager app from market. 3.3) Download and install ROM manager. 3.4) Run ROM manager and select first option (Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery). 3.5) Wait until ROM Manager say's that installation went successfully (Current version of ClockWorkMod is 2.5.1.3) 3.6) After installation tap in Rom manager option Reboot into Recovery to test that everything went well. 3.7) DHD should reboot in clockwork recovery manager.
