[Q] Rom Upgrades? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright so i am currently running incredibly re-engineered 2.3. Recently incredibly Re-engineered 2.3.1 was released. My question is how can i upgrade to the newest version? Do i have to do a full wipe, install the new rom, then restore? Or can i just flash the new rom over the existing? I tried searching for an answer to this but i couldn't find one, so if this is a repost, please don't hesitate to point me to a different thread.

Im not 100% sure about that rom in particular but usually roms can be flashed over the older version. You SHOULD be able to just flash it normally with no wipe.

You actually dont have to update, the only thing added is compatibility to cwm 3+. Everything else is the same as 2.3. So unless youre using that its not necessary. I wont til theres anothr significant update.

sweet i'm going to give it a shot. Ya i read that in the change log, but i wasn't sure in general how you would upgrade a rom, when a new version is released. Thanks for the help though

unless it says flashover I always do a wipe. Saves alot of headache down the road. It doesnt take long to set everything back up.

[Q] HBOOT Questions: Back to sense from cyanogenmod

I've done a bunch of googling and can't seem to get a straight answer so I thought I'd just ask. I apologize for the noobishness of this question and thank every kind soul in advance for your help on this form in general and this question in particular.
To install cyanogenmod I had to install an older hboot (.76.2000 (pc361)). I did so and things are okay but I really need to wireless tether with 4G these days. So I want to go back to stock. When I try to restore my nandroid backup i get an error restoring the boot image. From what I've found this is due to the hboot version I'm using.
So my question is this: can I simply update the hboot to something newer? Would that remove my ability to run an nandroid recovery? Would I be better just doing a RUU recovery from scratch (or is that even possible)? Essentially, what is the fastest and safest way to get back to a stock image?
Thanks again for your help with this.
So I grabbed the latest RUU and thought I'd give that a shot. It won't work though as it won't see the phone...even though Windows is seeing the phone in device manager. I'm guessing this has to do with SENSE not being on there.
Can one extract the files from the RUU installer and just apply them via the clockwork recovery?
Sorry no one responded sooner you can just use the warm 2. 2 Rom its very good has 4g and Sprint hotspot is hacked automatically and its got a custom version of sense give it a go put it on the root of SD and flash through recovery no need for stock you'll see its enjoyable

Also if necessary you can find an app for WiFi tether by googling WiFi tether apk

From what I heard, the sprint hotspot app only tethers on 3G. Any truth to this?
I battled with the exact same issue. Search my posts for my thoughts and findings in this.
Briefly though, I can say I that you are on the money and I too didn't know how to get past this hboot issue, but I found a way around the issue.
from the beginning, To flash Cm6 you must flash to an older hboot, don't remember the version.
To perform a nandroid restore to your stock sense Rom backup you already made, that is now not working, you have to go back to that hboot you had before you went to the older on to get Cm6 to flash.
Here's how I did it with a little bonus info.
You can now ever make a nandroid backup of Cm6, incase you might want to go back to Cm6.
Use the 3.29. Ruu to get away from cm6 and put that hboot you need to run that nandroid restore to the sense Rom backup you made. This will make you completely stock.
Then you can use unrevoked to root again.
Now you can edo your nandroid restore to your backups that wouldn't work because our hboot is good to go now.
Also, good thing to know is that you can nandroid restore back to your Cm6 backup, if you made one, because its the flashing that requires that other hboot, not a nandroid backup.

This is good info on how to go back to stock. If I weren't so damn busy with work and such I'd even think it should be a wiki article. The world of ROMs and ROOT is a fun place to play and opens up a lot of doors, but for a n00b you can feel kind of stuck. I thin it's because each phone/mfg tends to have their own quirks and so you can read general info but there are always these little variances which make me utterly afraid of bricking a $200 device....
I went with the Warm Two Point Two and, wow, it's slick. It gives me the 4G i needed and works quite well. It does also appear to tether over 4G as well. I'm very happy. But, again, it's good to have the steps outlined to go back to stock because I'm sure I won't be the last person to want to know how to do this.
Thanks again for all your help!

Gingerbread Downgrade

Hello all,
I installed OMFGB 1.1. 13 Rom about 3rd weeks ago, radio is 2.15. 0.0. 7.8, Android version is 2.3. 2, CWM version is 3.0. 0.5.
Any other rom i've tried to install will install, and but after reboot, and I get so many FCs that I'm forced to recover to my OMFGB backup. Roms I've tried: CM7 RC1&2, Skyraider Athena, Lithium NG, IncrROM, Virtuous, Jager.
I am definitely a noob at all this so maybe i've missed something obvious. I used to try Roms weekly b4 OMFGB, and now it seems like I'll be stuck there forever
If anyone has any suggestions or explanations as to why I'm experiencing this, I'd apprecite any info.

You are using 3.0.0.5, there is a known bug with that version and it not wiping correctly. Upgrade to 3.0.0.8 and wipe and then flash. Your problems will be fixed.
Anytime you have a question like this, please post it in the appropriate forums also, this is the development forum.
if you still cant flash roms after wiping data you could always find the latest RUU (or is ir RRU file and go back to 2.2 stock, then you would just have to run unrevoked to root and install recovery with rom manager
FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL ERASE ALL USER DATA AND BRING YOUR PHONE BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS WHEN YOU FIRST BOOTED
just remember, if anything goes wrong i didn't do it.

I will post future questions like this over in a more appropriate forum, my apologies.
I've checked the market, and there is only 3.0. 5, no 3.0. 8 as someone suggested. Am I missing something?

It's in Rom manager at the bottom under all cwm recoveries

Don't go into the market, go into rom manager, go all the way to the bottom to "All ClockWork Recoveries" and pick 3.0.0.8 from there.
Also, use this to wipe everything, including system. Do this once or twice, then flash the rom of your choice.

Help me please..

I see more people look at the General section more then the Q and A so im going to post this here. Im running CM7, 7.0.3. Ive been using it since the cm7 release candidates. This happened during the RC's too, i would be using it, and it would work beautifully for about 3 weeks, then near the end of the week i would boot the phone, and then a bunch of apps force close. Every app that i open force closes, i cant do anything on my phone without something force closing. I cant receive texts, check emails or anything. I open an app and it just closes. Im really really sick of it. I tried re flashing 7.0.3, didnt work. Im looking for either a fix for this, a for sure fix. Or looking for guidance to the original froyo stock rom with sense. It might just be a gingerbread problem, i was rooted on stock for over a month before trying roms. I really need my phone to be working. Please give me some help i would greatly appreciate it!!!!
Well then i make that 1%. Last time it happened when i had Cyanogens last update to CM7 i tried fix permissions, both in recovery and through rom manager. Didnt help. Only thing that helped was installing the update for the next version, worked for about 3 weeks, and now im getting the same force closes. I already tried it today before you posted, didnt help to fix permissions. I can have rom manager open for about 5 seconds then it FC's. Never had this problem on my stock rooted froyo.
Any help? i need phone working alright by tomorrow hopefully.
Can you flash a 2.2 rom.
Sent from my Optimized Inc using XDA Premium App
Idk, can i? I thought you had to do something else to downgrade from gingerbread to froyo.
Nope. Download another 2.2 rom and flash back. The only problem is the kernel but that's in the rom and would change when you flash. I flash between gbread and froyo all the time. If you go Froyo I recommend a z rom. If you want you can do newtoroots new optimized shift its really stable.

Could i get a link to the z rom?
Nvm i got it.
What about a link to the shift rom?

Wipe data factory reset, cache. Don't wipe SD card. Go to advanced then and wipe dalvik cache too. Just don't wipe SD card.

My personal opinion it is. Very stable. But all the roms are great just depends what your looking for. This seems to be most stable for my needs but I haven't tried the dream teams synergy nightlies yet either.

Well its running alright, had a couple of random force closes for reasons i dont know. Its fairly slow rom tbh.. I have about 70 MB of memory normally, with CM i had about 200. Ran fast. I tried to look at overclocking, but no app would allow me to. Would any kernel be okay for it? Like chads incredikernel betas? I really need some more performance in this thing, its just running so darn slow! Other then that i really do like the rom.
Is there any way to kinda increase the memory available? Besides closing background apps and removing widgets.
Well i installed beta 8, and it wont go passed my HTC Incredible white screen now, it goes to that then goes black.. Uhhhhh what do i do now? I can get into recovery tho. I cant transfer any files. ****
Someone tell me what to do now... Im screwed..
Was able to mount through recovery, transfering the rom to the phone and going to reflash. ugh!!
Another edit, gah i wish i could just get s-on and not worry about rooting now anymore lol. I just want good performance and a useful phone.

Quick question on ROM backups

I rooted my original inc this weekend, and am currently running cm7.1. I've got it backed up, also have another backup for skyraider 4.2, and another backup of the original rom when I first rooted. I flashed like 10 different roms, and backed up my existing rom every time I flashed a new rom, so I have like 11 different backups. Is it safe to delete all but my backup of the STOCKROOT, cm7.1, and skyraider?
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
It most definitely is. You don't even really need the stock one, as SR4.2 is basically stock in the same way that CM is basically stock: similar, but more settings/features. And, you can always grab a stock ROM in the Android Development section here anyway
Very cool, thanks. I'm new to the root scene, but I'm liking everything so far, the possibilities are endless. Gonna activate my og inc tomorrow and give it a few day shakedown to see how it runs thru a normal days use.
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
I only have 3 backups, anymore is unnecessary to me.
I keep stock, my latest for Magnolia, and my latest MIUI and delete the rest every chance I get.
Maybe save them to PC? I've got a couple of backups there of ROMs no longer available. So if I wanted to flash them I could, without doing setup, etc.

[Q] Verizon 5.10 upgrade patch?

I am pretty happy with the RMK almost-stock ROMs that exist, but can't seem to get any word on if he will be releasing an update for 5.10.
Is there a patch out there anywhere that I can use to update my current RMK 4.08 ROM to the latest 5.10 *without* having to do a data wipe? I've upgraded RMK's ROM's before by just installing over the top and not doing any data wipe, it works great. Hoping to be able to continue to do the same
I would just flash andybones stock. Most everyone who tried to update without wiping had a lot of FC's though. Always best practice to wipe. Just back up some things with tibu or whatever you use. In all honesty it isn't that bad to restore your items if you really want the upgrade.
Sent from my ADR6350 using xda premium
Thanks but its a pain wiping every time you want to upgrade. If Verizon can push an update without requiring a wipe, surely we can too
U got a point there.. but Verizon people are evil soul stealing gingers... They can do anything they want and no one will/can stop them
