Hi there, I just picked up a Desire HD from telus and I noticed that https browsing is very very slow. I've tried a multitude of browsers and they all exhibit the same performance.
The issue does not exist on wifi or with normal http pages.
Some googling resulted in this similar problem for the Milestone:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1663026-MIlestone-https-sites-and-3G
There is a problem with the stock Proxy settings:
Settings, Wireless & Network Settings, Mobile network settings, Access point Names,Telus,
Then delete the Proxy and Port settings in row three and four so that it then says "not set"

So my question is, has any one exprienced this problem? If so, is the above the solution?
When I go try to remove those two settings, there's a lock symbol on the "Telus SP" APN entry. Unfortunately I'm new to Android (I upgraded from a Diamond running WinMo 6.5 ) so what would be the least amount of steps I would have to do to get this section to become modifiable? I'm coming from a 4 year old WinMo device so I guess I'm easily amazed by the stock rom I know I'll eventually get bored of it though lol
From what I understand, the full steps would be:
gold card (using mmc2) -> downgrade -> Radio S-OFF and perm root -> ????? -> pre-rooted Telus ROM (ROM Base 1.84.661.1).
Where can I stop in the above steps to just unlock the APN settings?
Also, if I were to go all the way, 1) what would be the ???? step, and 2) how safe is this process if I do my reading on the above links?
Thanks in advance for helping a newbie My main concern is the https, so if anyone knows if there's another solution to it, please let me know!
1) Would be the step to install the Clockworks Recovery on the phone via rom manager.
2) It is fairly safe, if you follow the steps you should be fine.
3) You would have to flash back the stock radio as it gets changed durring the downgrade.
Awesome, thanks for the quick reply!
The slow https is killing me so I guess I'll just suck it up and root it then using this guide as reference:

Unfortunately I think this happens on a lot of Android handsets. I know on the previous one's I've had (G1, Hero, Milestone, Galaxy & my DHD) it simply CRAWLS on HTTPS ... I haven't found a way to fix it other than avoid those sites (which sucks due to online banking being HTTPS).

Have you tried removing the Telus proxy settings as that link suggested in my initial post? I'm curious as to whether that makes any difference.

I haven't no ... but I will try them and see what happens.
Also, you can just create a new APN with the same settings instead of rooting and changing the default, can you not?

Ah stupid me, yes you can do that. I figured that since there was a lock on the old APN it wouldn't let me add a new one either.
I copied the settings and took out the proxy and proxy port and https browsing is now nice and zippy
Thanks!

ok well i just made up this list a while ago to help someone out, and have ended up giving it to quite a few ppl now, so i figured i might as well post it here under an appropriate title for all to easily see and access.
i know dharvey wrote a great tutorial, and that there are prob others, but..what the heck. plus this is pretty quick and easy, though i cant say that it is as full and thought out and great as dharvey4651's (thx man!)...
IMPORTANT!!! ONLY SPRINT users follow below steps 5 and 8-11!! Altell users can follow all the steps except step 5 as long as they use a different ppst.exe, not the one mentioned below.
"#1- Backup all pim info and anything else you might want.
#2- Ensure you are currently running your carriers original official oem rom (os and radio) (if you have never flashed it at all then dont worry youre good to go).
#3- Unlock using imcokemans 2.31 unlocker (this for gps roms)
#4- run the sprint leaked rom.exe (here, close to the bottom where it says "original rom")
#5- SPRINT ONLY:allow all customizations to complete and run (i know - it takes a lil while)
#6- flash to desired rom.
#7- after she's all booted up, hard-reset.
#8- download and run cab from here (altell users run your own ppst stuff on the same post, non-sprint and non-altell users SKIP TO STEP 12): http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=282955&postcount=139
#9- allow soft-rest.
#10- navigate to \windows folder and run ppst.exe
#11- allow soft reset.
#12- allow boot-up, customize, restore pim info etc...

didnt use unlocker
I just ran the leaked ROM upgrade. It found my phone and flashed it. I never ran any of the SPL unlockers. Should I be worried about not being able to unlock later, or have trouble flashing an 'Official' release?

im....not really sure. being on a different continent i dont think it would work the same, unless you were able to find a separate radio only rom for your carrier, in which case you could flash whatever rom you wanted (w/o letting the cusomizations run on first boot), then flash your carriers os only rom, then be good to go!

new PPST direct link
This post should be a sticky!!!!
This works perfectly except for the fact that the link to ppcgeeks on #8 is busted. What is missing from that link is the file for ppst.exe. I beat my brains in trying to get the stupid gps to work before I finally realized what was missing from my install.
Here is the PPST file from sprint that you do in fact need to make the gps work great. I lock onto the gps sats in about 15 seconds, in my house, to about 9 of em.

flashing cmda phone different from gsm?
Hi All,
I just got my new sprint vogue to replace my t-mobile wizard. I flashed my wizard extensively over the past 2 years but I'm not sure about the Vogue. How does a cmda phone retain its network settings and network contact info if it is flashed when theres no sim card? I'm not talking about PIM info but the info the phone uses to identify itself and communicate with the network.
thanks
Lotus
This worked great. It was my first time flashing and following these instructions everything worked out well and I get locked into satellites with the gps very fast. Thank you.
i have a couple questions. 1st is i have a sprint touch flashed to cricket if i were to install this rom will all my cricket settings stay intact or will i have to reflash to cricket? 2nd does this rom include WM6.1 along with gps, and rev. A?
thanks for any help.

i must say that im not exactly sure how. but i can say that...it just does. if you flash a different radio rom...then you can be in trouble if it is not for your carrier. but we are discussing os only roms here and the network settings are therefore not really affected
and ps for you too, dont allow any files named "ppst.exe" to be run, unless you are sure they are for your carrier

ok so..no specific rom is being discussed here. this is just a how-to for what/e rom you want.
and no you should not have to re-flash to cricket as long as you only flash an os-only rom, a rom that does not have a radio included, and you never allow any files named "ppst.exe" to be executed.
but most all the roms that you can flash using these instructions do have 6.1 with gps and rev a yes

Hi all,
Last night i installed the new update for HTC Desire that popped up, after restarting the phone i now cant use my wifi and get the "unable to start wifi" when trying to enable it in settings.
I see this is a cause of the new update and alot of poeple are having the same problem. I have searched this forum and although finding other posts asking this the replies seem to be a mind boggling array of numbers and i can find a good step-by-step guide to get my phone back in good shape.
So my question is, can someone post a very detailed step-by-step guide to essentially get my phone back to the way it was (getting rid of this update) and then installing this new update properlly if posible. If any files are needed can you give a direct link to them
Here are my phone details:

Ye a step by step for that would be good, including the link to the file would that wipe the whole phone ? apps/sd and settings included?
Exactly the same problem for me!
I have a Vodafone supplied desire, which was not locked, or branded in anyway, but decided that I would like the WWE rom, as Vodafone almost never bother updating their roms!
I made a Goldcard 3 weeks ago, and installed the WWE Generic rom 1.15.405.4 (I think that's the right number) and a few days ago, got the message telling me of an update.
Like an idiot, I just installed it, and consequently lost WIFI.
Searched the forums and found a link to the full updated rom, using my Goldcard I then installed it, and it's been working fine ever since.
Heres the link to the full rom:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
Here's a link for making a Goldcard:
http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-create-a-goldcard/
Please be aware that this will completely wipe your device, unlike the update that keeps all of your apps, settings etc, but it does work!
Good luck!

This may be a stab in the dark but maybe the updater checks the network sim lock to help determine what update to install? It may see the Orange network lock and think the phone is still Orange branded and download the Orange customized update, causing a compatibility issue with the wi-fi?

Hi,
Are the Telstra Desire able to work with the newest 5.09 Radio?
is 3g internet and everything else still working after the update is applied? Will a SIMlock occur?
What are the advantages with this update?
Can we go back to previous radios by simply reflashing the radio?
I'm looking at Flashing a Froyo ROM and want to make sure that I don't brick my Desire in trying to do so.
Thanks
Mine's been working perfectly fine on the new Radio and Official Froyo (Without hboot) using nickiberli's ROM since about 30 minutes after it was uploaded.
I've been backwards and forwards and all over the place using other ROMs too, and have always been able to RUU flash it back to the stock Telstra 2.1 and re-root from scratch.
BTW: No SIMLock, and 3G/Wifi/GPS/Bluetooth all work as they did pre-2.2 and the new radio.
Sounds good. Which version of the Radio did you use?
Do you know if there are problems accessing the Telstra web pages and checking your accounts online as I have read that it may not work due to not having the useragent string?
Thanks for your help

Unless your phone is rooted you should be fine. There is a fix on the Modaco forums to replace the user strings in custom roms with the correct Telstra ones.
I can't confirm if it works as I've never used it (can't stand the Telstra crapware myself) but would be worth a shot
EDIT: Almost forgot, I'm currently using 5.09.00.20. 5.08.00.04 also worked fine.

The Telstra Strings I only need for online billing, otherwise just accessing the telstra website apparently charges.
Are there problems if you have or are planning to Root the phone? Currently it is not rooted, but if i try going to a FROYO ROM i will need to. Will this cause problems?
Thanks

I use 5.09.00.20 as well with no hassles.
Personally I don't care about the Telstra web pages as I use none of them, so I wouldn't know (I even removed all links and references to them in my stock ROM via ADB). I'm assuming they won't work due to said useragent string missing.
Otherwise, as Stewage says, there's a fix floating around somewhere for it if it's that important to you.

The problem that arises is basically just the useragent string not being in non-Telstra ROMs (Which you'll be using if you root and install Froyo). At least this is the impression I get, I haven't had ANY issues otherwise, and I've been rooted since about 3 days after I got the phone.
ok...
So if i flash the Radio to 5.09 then root, then flash to FROYO i shouldn't have any problems other than anything that deals with Telstra and needing to update APN
Found this rom over on the modaco forums:
http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/314372/telstramod2-2-2-sense-720p/
Looks like it's based on Leedroid and Pauls roms (both Froyo) and with the Telstra strings modded in. I'd give that a crack to see if your Telstra stuff still works
yeah im using the latest radio from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464
and the latest opendesire rom from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712615
works fine!
you can still check your usage without the strings, just means it will count towards your data usage instead of being unmetered, but really not that big of a deal unless you're signed up to the foxtel mobile crap
OK.
One final thing. When you flash the radio do you have to use Paul's R5 tools, or can you use ROM Manager (Clockwork) to flash the radio?
Thanks
P.S. Sorry for asking all the N00b questions

You can use clockworkmod or Amon RA recovery to flash the radio the same way you flash the custom roms
not sure if i am resurrecting a dead thread, but i thought it would be worthwhile getting the opinions of people with the Telstra Desire (A8183 model) on what radios are best for making sure that we get on the 850mhz (NextG) rather than the crappy 2100mhz (3Telstra) band... I noticed that my phone spends more time on 3Telstra than my wife's does as her phone has the Telstra Rom on it (presume that means that radio and RIL too) and so her phone gets speeds about 400kb/s while mine sits next to it getting 100kb/s...
Any ideas??
Hello guys, i wanna root my htc desire hd to the latest cyanogen mod. Im on the 3 (Three) network in the UK. I was just wondering if i do root my phone would i still be able to send texts and browse the web and all that with 3G after rooting or would i have to manually enter all the details again?

Hi,
Depending on your HTC firmware version you may need to downgrade. Firmware later than 1.32 (Android 2.2) cannot be rooted.
Rooting your phone will not alter your ability to send txt's or browse the web.
Here is a description of what Rooting does.
To downgrade, follow THIS thread.
As your with a major UK network the APN settings will already be incorporated into CM7 and you would not need to enter them manually.
I got my DHD a few weeks ago, and rooted it straight away. I'm also on 3, and I've had no problems at all.

1-you are going to be able to send messages perfectly
2-if you have 3g connection you are going to use the android browser perfectlty
3-normally if you flash another rom that your current... the APN list (parameters for 3g conecction) is completed automatically when your device detect your telephone company. if the list don´t do it automatically go to GOOGLE and look and browse in some pages for " APN list for three"

I have a T989D on Koodo which I've been messing with quite extensively, and yeah, everything is basically the same. The download/recovery mode linked above is the only major difference.
One thing of note, if you end up messing up the device and need to fully reflash from Odin, the t-mobile stock may not work. I tried over and over to recover from what was essentially a brick (ultra, ultra slow) and it just stayed that slow, even though it did seem to boot and connect and everything. It was totally unusable, however.
I found a different one that did work however, I can't seem to find the post anymore but I'm sure you'll be able to get it if you need it, there seem to be others out there with the same name, but not quite the same filesize. That shouldn't really matter as you'll doubtless go back to a custom rom anyway, the point is just to get you back to something that works.
For reference, the name of the one that worked for me is "SGH-T989_UVLH1_Stock_Odex_zipaligned_signed.zip" and it's 422 MB. This post seems to have a Koodo stock zip as well as the T-mobile one, it's about 100MB less but again, that really shouldn't matter so long as it's Koodo.
Hopefully you'll never need to use it, but I just wanted to let you know that even if you have to recover and some files don't seem to be working, keep trying, because the correct ones are out there! Just may need to search a bit for 'em

The tutorial for Rooting and all these ROMs present in android development section, are they the same for the T-989D Canadian version? Flashing them would work? I'm tried searching but it would just bring up roms based on T-989D. Just need a quick confirmation before I root and flash. Thanks.

A few more things SGH-T989D owners may want to be aware of:
1) This is an excellent resource: [ROM][Stock]T989UVLI4 (4.0.4) ♛ T989DTLLE4 (4.0.3) ♛ T989DTLLG2[ODIN][TWRP/CWM]
2) You might want to search and replace all "T989" with "T989D" in build.prop
" " replace all "TLLG2" with whatever radio your new ROM is using.
If you're on Koodo you might want to assign that to the ro.carrier property
3) If you've got a data plan with you might want to search the web for your carrier's apn info and insert it into "Settings|Wireless & networks|Mobile networks"
Note: This stuff is optional in the sense that your stuff is probably going to work if you don't make these changes. I haven't always updated all this after switching to a new custom rom, but I did notice that I showed up on the Telus network as a T989 as opposed to a T989D on the Koodo network. Really they're the same network but ... I don't know. Maybe I just over think things... I do like the fact that when I plug my phone into the computer or go to the play store or whatever that my phone reports as what it actually is and what radio it uses etc. I don't really care that much as long as my stuff works and I have access to apps that are appropriate for the hardware I'm using. YMMV.
Note2: Most of this info can be gleaned from your stock rom's "CSC" folder and build.prop file. When I have a little more time I'll write this up so its more understandable for those new to flashing Roms. Just wanted to mention that there are a few other tiny, nearly insignificant differences btw the T989 and T989D so that the OP and/or others can address these points if they choose to. At least not be surprised if it looks as though they're using data on a network with a different phone.
Note3: Maybe the only thing that matters is an imei number from your SIM. I don't really know. Be glad to be "told" by anyone that knows. I just know that these things are different even if they don't make a bit of difference in practice.
Re:Koodo SGH-T989D
Hello I'm new to posting on the forums, sorry If I've missed the answer to this question already!
I have a Koodo SGH-T989D that I got in September, before that I was using a non smart flip phone . So I'm quite new to this whole rom business, but even android/ smart phone os in general.
I've been able to flash many roms in the past couple months and have a good understanding of what it is i'm doing. Never had an issue I couldnt fix myself actually, so I've never made an account.
This latest problem has me puzzled though, I've totally lost data connection on my s2x while using any radio. I use SGH-T989D_TLLG2_Koodo_radio but I tried UVLI4 just to see.
However I did change a few things up from my usual routine to flash 4.2.1
1: changed twrp to 2.4.1.0 from 2.2 cwm flashable zip
2: moved all my zips to sd card and formatted internal memory(to eliminate possible issues)
Before this I was using twrp 2.2 and only doing a clean install, not formatting internal sd without any issues or instability.
I've been on [4.2.1 | 4.2.2] AOKP :: jb-mr1 :: build 3 and very impressed with it, except this one issue.
In the thread there is a post that refers to getting data working with koodo, so I think its an apn/proxy setting. I just am not sure where I would have to change these settings.
Just restored a recent nandroid backup and everything works fine.
Can anyone help me out, any insight or tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Check here for Koodo APN settings: http://koodomobile.com/en/on/switch2koodo-step-3-c.shtml
Go to settings > wireless and network, more... > mobile networks > access point names > then hit your options button > New APN > enter the details found on the page linked above.
Hope that solves it for you.
Re:Koodo SGH-T989D
Thank you so much, worked right away!
The reason I didnt just look up koodo apn settings is because I had no idea what they were.
And Until now I've never had an issue.
Is this something to do with aokp 4.2 or is it because I formatted my internal storage?
Since mid December I've tried out about 5 or 6 roms just to see how they compared to stock. And all I have to say is wow!
Thank you to all those who make this possible, it really is a great community.
I was on stock koodo rom and unrooted until december because my charge port stopped working after like 3 months...? So I went looking for info and I was brought here, haven't looked back since.
When to check for proper apn info?

Ususally associated with radio upgrades; but rather than get too particular, its good practice to check the apn info after any ROM upgrade. If you think about it, any of the hercules upgrades are going to be the same across the board for any given update. Where they're different is where we want to pay particular attention. In this case, carrier specific information.
