[Q] GB 2.3 AOSP Mail Client w/o Exchange security (lock code requirement)? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone seen a version of the 2.3 AOSP Email client that doesn't enforce an Exchange server's lock screen policy? I'd love to not have to put the code in every time, and it frequently causes problems with flashing new components (looks like something in the crypto gets messed up and it no longer recognizes the correct code).
Bonus points to anyone that just knows how to kill off the lock code via adb/sqlite3...that would suffice to let me flash things without worrying that I won't be able to get back into my phone w/o total wipe and restore (even restoring a nandroid of my phone taken *immediately* before flashing new kernels leaves me locked out)!

Eh, well for $5 I'll put up with my current tiff with the AOSP client. I don't need my phone's mail client to do *that* much.

Huge SMTP problem with WM 6.1

Unfortunately I narrowed this down to the WM 6.1 upgrade. I can no longer send emails.
+ T-Mobile Dash (aka Excalibur aka HTC s620)
+ RUU_Excalibur_WM61_Kavana_080408_WWE installed
(generally working wonderfully!)
+ 2 different Pop3/SMTP email accounts (my own domains, hosted by godaddy)
+ EMail settings set-up on the dash (not using My Tmobile as a gateway)
(SMTP uses authentication, no ssl and port-80)
Emails were working just fine for 2 years under WM5, 6. After I installed 6.1 ... receiving worked fine, and still does.
Sending emails would work for a few hours, then I would get a vague error message (error - something is wrong - check the settings or that the network is working)
For a few days I was able to sometimes get it to work if I toggled SSL for outgoing. But no more.
The only way I can get emails to send is to delete the email settings, and re-set it up again as new. Then after a few hours it fails again.
After hours and hours of playing and on the phone with tech support - we've determines that the settings are (and always have been) correct and that there are no network or hosting problems. And the phone is brand new.
The email sending worked fine until the 6.1 upgrade.
Any suggestions, insights, help, therapy, anything???

You should change your password because if you have been using unsecured smtp for 2 years it's likely someone has already stolen it. Turn on SSL and keep it on ;-)
Not sure why it would fail after a few hours though.

Not to sound too sarcastic - but can you be a little more vague? ; ) "tweak the settings" ... hmm. OK.
After hours and hours of troubleshooting (and I'm no newbie) with the mobile provider, hosting company etc ... I think we've reset, reconfigured just about everything.
The only thing that works - temporarily - is if I delete the entire email account from the phone, and the create a new (identical) one. It will work for a few send/receive sessions, then the same sending problem will occur ... never to recover until I repeat that process.
If anyone has any specific experience with this problem (or specific suggestions) - I'd really be grateful !

After 11 hours of testing and troubleshooting over the past 2 weeks - we've definitely covered the basics.
In case you were wondering
+ the phone is turned on
+ I am pressing the buttons on the device as opposed to trying to use tele-kinetic ability (which can be inconsistent)
+ My eyes are opened and are in working order
+ I made sure I was in no tunnels, caves, canyons or steel-concrete enclosed bomb shelters
+ I verified that my network provider (T-Mobile) did not go out of business, or suddenly remove all their cell towers
+ I verified that most my 2,000 email contacts (potential recipients) have not been abducted by aliens who also deleted their email accounts.
Also
+ This is happening with 2 different email accounts.
+ The Pop3 and smtp servers are indeed working - since
a. I am able to put the settings in my PC, and another phone device (a older sprint phone that allows me to setup pop/smtp) - send/recieve emails work fine
+ Emails were working fine before I upgraded to WM 6.1

+ EMails worked ok for the first 2-3 days then the trouble started.
+ I can only get emails to send now when I delete the account, and create a new one (with identical settings). This lasts for a few hours before it fails to send.
+ I've been on the phone troubleshooting with tmobile and my hosting company for hours on end - trying all sorts of funky settings and tests ...
They hosting company seems to have determined that the smtp request is never getting to them; tmobile verified in great detail that the network is working.
Their idea was something along the lines of "the email client part of upgrade of WM 6.1 seems to be deleting a security certificate" or something .
I dunno about that - but it is clear that something is going on with the email client. The network, and email hosting is just fine, as are the settings.
Hope some of this helps - and that someone has some ideas I can try.
Oh - and just to pre-empt some suggestions:
1. No I won't change to linux, a mac or an iphone - but thanks for the suggestion.
2. I have checked out that I have not transported into an alternate reality, where everything is pretty much the same as in this reality - except my emails don't work.
3. Yes, I am using a Dash/HTC s670 - the battery is charged, and I have powered down, taken the battery and sim card out, hopped on one foot and made sure I have no other software running (even on all my pc's) before I powered it back on.
4. Yes, I can make phone calls and do everything else
5. yes, I have an internet connection - and the proper one (GPRS - but have also tried this via the wifi connection.
6. No I am not talking on the phone or browsing the internet during the ill-fated email sending.
7. I am pretty sure there is no conspiracy between t-mobile and my hosting company to block me from sending emails - only from this phone.
8. There are no unusual limitations or special issues with my hosting company about sending these emails.
9. I've tried sending to myself, others, multiples etc ... no difference.
10. It happens with more than one email address/domain.

not sure if this helps, but i too cannot send via smtp, but one thing i found out is the email account ( as i found out) i setup (which was my ISP's ..Cox Communications) blocks smtp transmissions sent via proxy (which is what you go through via edge or gprs,...not sure about wi-fi though).

I had tmobile level-3 tech support (aka as their obi-wans) conferenced in with my hosting company (godaddy) - and tmobile specifically asked about the proxy issues. Nope. Nice suggestion
PLEASE note everyone - MY issue is not merely "I can't get my emails to send" ... as if I am trying to figure out the proper settings or trying to get email sending to work for the first time
Emails USED to send until I upgraded to WM 6.1 ... for 2 years
If my settings were wrong, if there were some incompatibility between the network and my smtp server then my emails would NEVER have sent.
As it is ... they send sometimes (when I set up the email client with a new account).

A lot of the senior members here (including yourself) seem to know what they are talking about and are quite helpful - despite many others answering without bothering to read the question. So thanks
I honestly and at a brick wall here. The only thing that seems to make sense is some sort of concept that involves my smtp settings being corrupted (upon saving or sending) ...
And I mean corrupted - since they work consistently for a few hours and then stop.
Other than that, I haven't a clue - neither do tmobile nor my hosting (and for once I feel sorry for them - since the time they put in trying to troubleshoot far exceeds any profit they might make from me).
i dont know if this will work or not but its a suggestion since I also own a domain with Godaddy. Sometimes even my SMTP fails though I am using WM6 and not WM6.1 so this is what i have done.
Goto www.mobisync.com and setup ur account with them. They support upto 5 accounts. Then configure ur settings according to the site.
There are 2 advantages for this. 1 is that you get push email in real time and when u send email its using mobisync servers and not the godaddy SMTP.
Also it totally free.
i am using this with no problems till now. I suggest you try it and its very easy to setup mobisync on ur cell phone...will probably take 30sec or less.

actually I am not looking for "alternatives" - I am looking to solve the problem with the email client. If I need to send emails I can indeed send from my PC, or even webmail from my phone or just about anywhere else.
Sure, I can use some sort of network based email, IMAP or Microsoft exchange or whatever.
RIght now I want to solve the issue at hand. It's sort of like my trying to get about microsoft word on my PC working again, and getting suggests to type my letters in a text editor or other client. I *know* other ways exists - but this way is the one I prefer and it should be working. Clearly there is a problem and I'd like to solve it.
If no one else is experiencing this issue (in this forum), then I'll have to consider something specific with my setup/network etc .. but then again 6.1 has not been out long enough to make that assumption yet.
I appreciate the ideas and help - keep them coming - eventually we'll hit upon something.

Since you can initially send, your setting must be at least basically correct. It sounds more like the SMTP session is not being closed correctly, since deleting and recreating (which would be effectively a close) works. I would guess WM6.1 thinks the connection is still active but the server has closed it. You really need a trace of the SMTP session.
As a work around/test you need is another completely different SMTP server you can authenticate with. I suggest your home ISP. They should have one you can authenticate with for use when travelling. Try it with that. If it works there is a compatibility issue between the Godaddy SMTP server and WM6.1 so you will need a trace for us to figure out what is going on. If it doesn't work there as well, well we still need that trace.
Darn, your suggested sounded promising - and I did indeed spend about 2 hours chasing it. I tried smtp from my cable op - who is my broadband isp ... no luck - same problem. Then I got on the phone with t-mobile, using their smtp settings. Same issue.
We're all stumped.
Not sure how to do a trace of the smtp session from my device.
Again - this worked for 2 years (until WM 6.1) - at which point sending worked for a few hours then not. The only way it works again is if I create a new account with the same settings.

It's OFFICIAL- WM 6.1 is the problem !
Damn. Damn.
OK - after yet ANOTHER 4 hour marathon session with Tmobile tier 3 support - in trying everything ... SMTP email still does not send reliably
(again - starting with WM 6.1, emails simple do not send - no timeout no port errors, bounceback, security issues). The only way it sends is if I create a NEW account with the identical settings. Then it will work for several hours 2-4 ... then emails go back to not-sending.
Finally after a total of over 30 hours of testing in the last 8 days (yeah, I've got a full time job too, and had been traveling!) ... I had to go to a tmobile store and side by side test with a WM 6.0 dash. Same everything - settings etc. 6.0 works. 6.1 not.
And where would I officially report this?
Even more of a tragedy since I absolutely loved everything else in 6.1
PLEASE PLEASE (whoever does these things) - please post a fix or rom update!

I would recommend waiting for an official release from T-Mobile or HTC before filing any bug reports.
"Hi, I downloaded a hacked beta rom from some website and it doesn't work right" doesn't usually get them moving fast.
Well, I sort of meant reporting this to whomever ported. I honestly don't know the logistics here of what ROM I have or how it came about. the point of confusion (on this point) is that the announcement and link for the 6.1 release actually appeared on a T-Mobile affiliated blog or site (forget which) - giving the perhaps mistaken impression that this was some sort of official release for the Dash - only that T-mobile was not yet supporting it. I definitely claim ignorance here.
My comment about reporting the bug - was more about letting the person/team who "ported" WM 6.1 to the Dash know about this issue. I am sure they would want to know (especially if this issue was specific to the port). Just because I posted a thread on this issue does not mean that the right people know about it yet - which is why I mentioned it.

smtp problem with wm 6.1
is there a solution to this problem yet? I have the same problem since upgrading to 6.1. I've noticed that it appears to be related to smtp authentication. It seems to work ok on an earthlink account i have, which does not require smtp authentication.
No solution yet. Problem still persists (though intermittent). Seems to be related to 6.1 not resetting or saving a security certificate or something. But I am no expert. All I know is I can no longer rely on my Dash for SMTP email since upgrading to 6.1

i have my phone setup for imap with gmail and i can receive perfectly fine, but it wont send
i delete the account and recreated it and it worked but after a few hours stop sending again

FoYo OTA update - what's going to happen?

I've spent a long time with smartphones but I've never had an OTA ROM update before and thought it might be useful if those in the know could give us an idea of what to expect.
I assume that as with wired ROM updates of yore I should expect to be in a hard reset situation post update - all content, data, apps etc will need reinstalling - is this correct?
If so will I have to set the phone up from scratch again (with my gmail account details etc) reinstall all my apps one by one from the Market, resync all my data and painstakingly set up all my home screens / scenes by hand etc?
Or is it not as bad as all that / is there a smarter way to prepare for this?
Well I'm not personally sure on how Android updates work (I personally think it probably does 'hard reset'), but I know that if you have HTCs backup feature running, it saves all your important stuff - Scenes, wifi info, bookmarks, text messages, gmail info etc.

Fair enough lol. Well I think you can sync to the PC for your Outlook stuff, but there are also apps in the Market that do what you are looking for, but I have no idea what they're called, or which one to choose, sorry.
All, a few weeks ago an update come down that killed the Wifi on unbranded T-Mobile and Orange UK phones. The T-Mobile fix was simple enough but the Orange phones got SIM locked and needed unlocking, sometimes at a cost.
What steps should we take when this update comes? Is there a way to get my unbranded T-Mobile Desire back to it's T-Mobile ROM?
I would take the advise given by the iphone dev-team, which is to old off on the official update until the devs have looked and ensured it won't cause problems. If there is an official OTA, it will be a matter of hours before the dev get their hands on it and release a custom version, that will not cause issues with return your phone to branded/network locked. Pacience is a virtue
If you want to return to stock and don't mind being locked, there is a guide in the dev forum for returning your phone to stock.
with regards to backup I would recommend titanium backup, it's great for backing up all settings and apps.
Since my phone is rooted, what ROM should I use to get OTA update?
Or I will need to switch back to stock ROM to get it?
I dont imagine your settings to be lost, i would imagine, system update, reboot and its version 2.2 but like with most roms etc a hard reset recommended? obviously backing up your settings is advised like with all updates

I would assume when you flash the OTA ROM it will return your phone to stock and remove root. You be better off holding off for a day or so to let the dev's do there thang.
So - seems we've established that the OTA update will reset everything on the device.
DPK suggests that the HTC backup feature will restore everything - can anyone confirm that this includes:
Apps
Scenes / Homescreen layouts
Accounts - core Google account / Gmail accounts / POP3 accounts
Network configuration - O2 / Voda settings etc
WiFi settings - access details for all the hotspots I have signed on to
Data - email / contacts / calendar etc
It's taken a couple of months for me to get the Desire exactly how I want it and all works well so I'm not convinced I'm even going to want to update - but if I do / it is thrust upon me it would be good to know how Android manages this process.

I have My Backup Pro installed but in the WM world it was never a good idea to use backed up apps - a full reinstall was best practice. Not sure if this applies to android.
Quite surprised that everyone seems happy to just suck it and see though - the move to Android does seem to require a degree of "abandon all control" that I wasn't expecting ....

The HTC backup feature is pretty rubbish, it will only backup your user data, IE bookmarks, SMS, contact, network settings, wifi settings etc..
It doesn't backup you applications, sense homescreen layout (you don't even have access to your saved layout, which really defeats the object of that feature), mail accounts.
For application backup titanium is brilliant, though settings aren't always portable between different ROM due to the changes that entail in a new build.
This is the same for most phone OTA updates, I've had them in the past and it will cause problems with existing software.
Hope this advise is helpful.

Unrevoked 3 Rooting Issues with my Droid Incredible

I am in desperate need of a solution...please help.
The company I work for uses Microsoft Exchange Server for our Email Service and before I rooted my Droid Incredible I was able to use the Exchange Activesync service on my phone to sync with my work's email without a problem.
Now that I rooted my phone I receive an error telling me I am unable to connect to the exchange server. I have already attempted to use "K-9 Email Client" and "Lockpicker" to see if I could connect. No luck... I believe the issue is with a missing certificate but I am not sure. I have already contacted my IT Department at my work which ended up being useless cause they are unaware of how to locate the certificate for our email service.
Anyways if anyone could shed some light on this please do...Thank you!
Also Facebook does not sync contacts, the live feed works fine.
I don't really mind this cause I'm using "FB Sync" to get my friends pictures but I do miss having all of Facebook contacts shown in my Contacts List.

and re root with unrevoked3. i have to say, ive tried all the roms except pmf yasr and red and blue, and ive never had all these wierd errors everyone had. my theory is that all the incredibles are made differently. some are more resistant to modding and rooting and others arent. but anyway, just ruu and apply unrevoked3. and be sure to backup contacts and data before ruu

not sure about the email thing, but for your contacts try ensuring that Facebook contacts are selected to show up by going to your contacts list and hitting Menu > View and make sure you have Facebook checked.

Ya I did that and although the option to show Facebook Contacts is available...the list is empty and says I have zero friends. Which is wrong I have over 300 Friends. So the issue has to be with the ROM.

I've tried two ROMs the one provided by Unrevoked3 by default and JagerRomSense both had the same problem - No Exchange Service and No Facebook Account Sync. I've decided to go back to the Original setup and just wait till the Official Froyo OTA comes out for Verizon. Cause I can't stand having issues with my phone. This is not a ROM, this is your new recovery which you probably flashed via the unrevoked tool. The unrevoked tool does not provide a ROM, all it does is root your phone and flash Clockwork mod recovery.
I have a feeling this was the start of your problems. You need to understand the differences between these types of things BEFORE you go and start modding your phone.
The company I work for is pretty picky about which phones can connect on their network and I managed to get the incredible up and running. As a hint, we recently purchased a smartphone company. Anyway when the purchase went through and they started letting execs carry the new phones, there were some ActiveSync changes that allowed exchange to work on just about anything that supported the required security policies.
Long story short, I’ve had a few times where i needed to delete the account and reactivate it because of sync problems. In order to do so, it seems like I have to turn lock picker off, setup the account, and then re-enable lock picker if I want that functionality. If you have this program installed, try disabling it, deleting your exchange account, re-adding your account, and then seeing what happens.
If by some strange chance you happen to work for the same company I hinted at above, shoot me a PM here and I’ll get you some instructions I found and essentially translated from the company we just acquired to the Incredible.
I have a phone by said company coming my way; they are expecting most of us to carry it at work. I wonder how hard it will be to switch back and forth…

Disable PIN lock policy for an Exchange account

My company uses an Exchange server for email, and it works great....except for one thing:
Due to their arcane policies, I am only able to use a pin lock on my phone. All of the other lock options are disabled, even face unlock. Also, they have the screen set to time out at 1 minute, which sucks when trying to use pretty much any application.
Does anyone know of a way to override these policies since my device is rooted?

You could also get Enhanced Email from the market. Although its pricey, it works great.
That is not arcane at all, those are good security practices. This is why Android still lags behind apple and rim at the enterprise level - too many easy hacks to bypass the security that businesses need. Faceunlock can be cracked by a polaroid and many swipe patterns can be guessed by looking at fingerprints on the screen.
Honestly, with all the personal information that resides on a smart phone I don't understand why everyone doesn't have a strong pin on their phones. Hope your buddies don't swipe your phone at the next party, unlock it with a facebook pic, and play some prank with your work email account.

Wasn't trying to scold you, just explaining the risks involved and the reasons for the policies. I wouldn't recommend to any of my clients to set policies lower than that. And I know a bunch of people that want an android for work but the IT department won't issue one or even allow people to use their own because of the work arounds.
My work policy is a 4 character pin with 1 minute time out. I exceed that on my device - 5 character pin and 30 second time out. In no time you won't notice it at all.
I don't know if this is a bug, but I have been able to remove the pin lock policy on my exchange account EVERY time

When it tells me that it's going to disable face unlock ,etc , HIT THE BACK key
Voila, you're out of there and it lets you go forward.
Don't know if it's our exchange server but that works for me

Then you should probably talk to your employer about it. This is an extremely basic security practice, and like multiple people have already said the easy "hack" to get around the practices is the exact reason most employers don't allow Android users access to their Exchange servers.
My company doesn't allow any Android phones on their Exchange network, exactly for this reason.
BTW, just for reference, it is possible to implement monitoring tools in an Exchange server to notify the administrators of changes to security features. Most employers wouldn't even talk to an employee that's violating security practices...it's just "Here's your box and there's the door". Complain all you want about them, but they're there for a reason. I wouldn't risk it just to escape having to input a key combination.

When it tells me that it's going to disable face unlock ,etc , HIT THE BACK key
Voila, you're out of there and it lets you go forward.

Maybe your admins didn't force device security. My company doesn't even allow pattern locks

Im totally aware of a company eanting to protect thier IP. I dont even mind having some sort of lock on my phone. But it would br nice to be able to at least bump the lockout time a bit to make the phone useable. Or at least let me do pattern lock.
Theres no sense in trying to make this a pissing contest on security policies.

I sign up to get company email on my own phone as a convenience to both of us. If their security policy was so strict that it made it difficult to use my phone, that convenience would go away and any after hour emails would have to wait until the morning. Obviously not everyone can get away with that, but luckily I can.

I picked up Enhanced Email from the amazon app store when it was the free app of the day and have been happy with it(It can disable exchange policies). I do have the lock feature on my phone enabled however because I also use Google Wallet, so I want a little extra protection.
So, you need my phone an also need two separate passwords to use Google Wallet. Hopefully by that time I will have wiped my phone and/or located it.
once on a custom rom, ive never had a problem with exchange security settings. unless i'm going out for a big night (and might lose my phone) i leave the security off.

If you are able to turn off the PIN lock while using corporate exchange mail then your exchange server does not have the required security policy.
Unless there's something else you've done which you didn't post.

Yep, that'll be the server as I get a security pop up and you can't dismiss it. Once setup all other lock options are off limits.
The annoyance for me was the inability to change the time out period, it made it unusable in certain situations.

We allow iPhones and Android devices to use our enterprise Exchange email with a 4-digit PIN, 1-minute lock AND the understanding that we can wipe the employee's phone if necessary. Installing software to circumvent this security would violate our security policies and would result in a disciplinary action.
Is this your personal phone or did your company provide it?

Not really relevant, just curious because if the company bought it and pays the monthly costs then you really shouldn't have too much to complain about. So I guess it's your choice to connect to the Exchange server, I would never expect a company to mandate corporate email on an employee's personal phone.

Yeah, had it been their phone and plan, I wouldn't mind it. Their dime, their rules.
While its not mandatory for me to have it, it is very handy since I am a systems admin (Linux) and its nice to get alerted via logwatch emails when something bad happens.

Is it possible to bypass pin/security code in email app on stock rom?

Hi,
I'm trying to bypass the required pin/security code that my company's microsoft exchange email requires on a stock rom.
I installed the exchangen-no-pin hacked app that everyone uses on an AOSP rom, no problems.
But since I have decided that AOSP roms leave me with at least 1/3 less battery life than stock, I want to go back to stock. But I can't seem to get around the pin/security code policy b/c the hacked email apk doesn't work.
Anyone have any ideas?

I wish people like you would learn to research their answers before being rude to others. This Xposed mod does not work on Stock Rom. Is google not working for you?

Bypassing corporate security policies sounds like a good idea.
Use an email client such as Nine. That will allow you to satisfy the exchange server with an email app pin lock and wipe, instead of a device level admin lock and wipe.

Mailwise is another (free) email client that allows bypass exchange security if you enter a code you have to fetch from their website one time.
Although Nine is probably a better alternative because it does have the app level pin & wipe function rather than completely bypassing exchange security.
I can recommend NINE, it works great and their support is also pretty good, I received a reply almost instantly when I reported a minor bug and it was fixed within a day.
on stock, i don't think so. it is governed by the administrators of your email account. is it an exchange account?
