Unfortunately I narrowed this down to the WM 6.1 upgrade. I can no longer send emails.
+ T-Mobile Dash (aka Excalibur aka HTC s620)
+ RUU_Excalibur_WM61_Kavana_080408_WWE installed
(generally working wonderfully!)
+ 2 different Pop3/SMTP email accounts (my own domains, hosted by godaddy)
+ EMail settings set-up on the dash (not using My Tmobile as a gateway)
(SMTP uses authentication, no ssl and port-80)
Emails were working just fine for 2 years under WM5, 6. After I installed 6.1 ... receiving worked fine, and still does.
Sending emails would work for a few hours, then I would get a vague error message (error - something is wrong - check the settings or that the network is working)
For a few days I was able to sometimes get it to work if I toggled SSL for outgoing. But no more.
The only way I can get emails to send is to delete the email settings, and re-set it up again as new. Then after a few hours it fails again.
After hours and hours of playing and on the phone with tech support - we've determines that the settings are (and always have been) correct and that there are no network or hosting problems. And the phone is brand new.
The email sending worked fine until the 6.1 upgrade.
Any suggestions, insights, help, therapy, anything???
Thanks!
Please someone help out - I'm going nuts.
You should change your password because if you have been using unsecured smtp for 2 years it's likely someone has already stolen it. Turn on SSL and keep it on ;-)
Not sure why it would fail after a few hours though.

Not to sound too sarcastic - but can you be a little more vague? ; ) "tweak the settings" ... hmm. OK.
After hours and hours of troubleshooting (and I'm no newbie) with the mobile provider, hosting company etc ... I think we've reset, reconfigured just about everything.
The only thing that works - temporarily - is if I delete the entire email account from the phone, and the create a new (identical) one. It will work for a few send/receive sessions, then the same sending problem will occur ... never to recover until I repeat that process.
If anyone has any specific experience with this problem (or specific suggestions) - I'd really be grateful !
lemme get everything straight first, your saying you upgraded to 6.1 correct? and now your email account wont let u send emails correct? well is your EDGE working? can u still get on the internet with no problem?

yes yes yes yes yes
After 11 hours of testing and troubleshooting over the past 2 weeks - we've definitely covered the basics.
In case you were wondering
+ the phone is turned on
+ I am pressing the buttons on the device as opposed to trying to use tele-kinetic ability (which can be inconsistent)
+ My eyes are opened and are in working order
+ I made sure I was in no tunnels, caves, canyons or steel-concrete enclosed bomb shelters
+ I verified that my network provider (T-Mobile) did not go out of business, or suddenly remove all their cell towers
+ I verified that most my 2,000 email contacts (potential recipients) have not been abducted by aliens who also deleted their email accounts.
Also
+ This is happening with 2 different email accounts.
+ The Pop3 and smtp servers are indeed working - since
a. I am able to put the settings in my PC, and another phone device (a older sprint phone that allows me to setup pop/smtp) - send/recieve emails work fine
+ Emails were working fine before I upgraded to WM 6.1
**
+ EMails worked ok for the first 2-3 days then the trouble started.
+ I can only get emails to send now when I delete the account, and create a new one (with identical settings). This lasts for a few hours before it fails to send.
+ I've been on the phone troubleshooting with tmobile and my hosting company for hours on end - trying all sorts of funky settings and tests ...
They hosting company seems to have determined that the smtp request is never getting to them; tmobile verified in great detail that the network is working.
Their idea was something along the lines of "the email client part of upgrade of WM 6.1 seems to be deleting a security certificate" or something .
I dunno about that - but it is clear that something is going on with the email client. The network, and email hosting is just fine, as are the settings.
Hope some of this helps - and that someone has some ideas I can try.
Oh - and just to pre-empt some suggestions:
1. No I won't change to linux, a mac or an iphone - but thanks for the suggestion.
2. I have checked out that I have not transported into an alternate reality, where everything is pretty much the same as in this reality - except my emails don't work.
3. Yes, I am using a Dash/HTC s670 - the battery is charged, and I have powered down, taken the battery and sim card out, hopped on one foot and made sure I have no other software running (even on all my pc's) before I powered it back on.
4. Yes, I can make phone calls and do everything else
5. yes, I have an internet connection - and the proper one (GPRS - but have also tried this via the wifi connection.
6. No I am not talking on the phone or browsing the internet during the ill-fated email sending.
7. I am pretty sure there is no conspiracy between t-mobile and my hosting company to block me from sending emails - only from this phone.
8. There are no unusual limitations or special issues with my hosting company about sending these emails.
9. I've tried sending to myself, others, multiples etc ... no difference.
10. It happens with more than one email address/domain.
Thanks for all the help! Sincerely. Thanks. I really need to solve this.
not sure if this helps, but i too cannot send via smtp, but one thing i found out is the email account ( as i found out) i setup (which was my ISP's ..Cox Communications) blocks smtp transmissions sent via proxy (which is what you go through via edge or gprs,...not sure about wi-fi though).

I had tmobile level-3 tech support (aka as their obi-wans) conferenced in with my hosting company (godaddy) - and tmobile specifically asked about the proxy issues. Nope. Nice suggestion
PLEASE note everyone - MY issue is not merely "I can't get my emails to send" ... as if I am trying to figure out the proper settings or trying to get email sending to work for the first time
Emails USED to send until I upgraded to WM 6.1 ... for 2 years
If my settings were wrong, if there were some incompatibility between the network and my smtp server then my emails would NEVER have sent.
As it is ... they send sometimes (when I set up the email client with a new account).

A lot of the senior members here (including yourself) seem to know what they are talking about and are quite helpful - despite many others answering without bothering to read the question. So thanks
I honestly and at a brick wall here. The only thing that seems to make sense is some sort of concept that involves my smtp settings being corrupted (upon saving or sending) ...
And I mean corrupted - since they work consistently for a few hours and then stop.
Other than that, I haven't a clue - neither do tmobile nor my hosting (and for once I feel sorry for them - since the time they put in trying to troubleshoot far exceeds any profit they might make from me).
i dont know if this will work or not but its a suggestion since I also own a domain with Godaddy. Sometimes even my SMTP fails though I am using WM6 and not WM6.1 so this is what i have done.
Goto www.mobisync.com and setup ur account with them. They support upto 5 accounts. Then configure ur settings according to the site.
There are 2 advantages for this. 1 is that you get push email in real time and when u send email its using mobisync servers and not the godaddy SMTP.
Also it totally free.
i am using this with no problems till now. I suggest you try it and its very easy to setup mobisync on ur cell phone...will probably take 30sec or less.
Hope this helps...cheers mate..!!
Hi - thanks for chiming in ...
actually I am not looking for "alternatives" - I am looking to solve the problem with the email client. If I need to send emails I can indeed send from my PC, or even webmail from my phone or just about anywhere else.
Sure, I can use some sort of network based email, IMAP or Microsoft exchange or whatever.
RIght now I want to solve the issue at hand. It's sort of like my trying to get about microsoft word on my PC working again, and getting suggests to type my letters in a text editor or other client. I *know* other ways exists - but this way is the one I prefer and it should be working. Clearly there is a problem and I'd like to solve it.
If no one else is experiencing this issue (in this forum), then I'll have to consider something specific with my setup/network etc .. but then again 6.1 has not been out long enough to make that assumption yet.
I appreciate the ideas and help - keep them coming - eventually we'll hit upon something.

Since you can initially send, your setting must be at least basically correct. It sounds more like the SMTP session is not being closed correctly, since deleting and recreating (which would be effectively a close) works. I would guess WM6.1 thinks the connection is still active but the server has closed it. You really need a trace of the SMTP session.
As a work around/test you need is another completely different SMTP server you can authenticate with. I suggest your home ISP. They should have one you can authenticate with for use when travelling. Try it with that. If it works there is a compatibility issue between the Godaddy SMTP server and WM6.1 so you will need a trace for us to figure out what is going on. If it doesn't work there as well, well we still need that trace.
Darn, your suggested sounded promising - and I did indeed spend about 2 hours chasing it. I tried smtp from my cable op - who is my broadband isp ... no luck - same problem. Then I got on the phone with t-mobile, using their smtp settings. Same issue.
We're all stumped.
Not sure how to do a trace of the smtp session from my device.
Again - this worked for 2 years (until WM 6.1) - at which point sending worked for a few hours then not. The only way it works again is if I create a new account with the same settings.

It's OFFICIAL- WM 6.1 is the problem !
Damn. Damn.
OK - after yet ANOTHER 4 hour marathon session with Tmobile tier 3 support - in trying everything ... SMTP email still does not send reliably
(again - starting with WM 6.1, emails simple do not send - no timeout no port errors, bounceback, security issues). The only way it sends is if I create a NEW account with the identical settings. Then it will work for several hours 2-4 ... then emails go back to not-sending.
Finally after a total of over 30 hours of testing in the last 8 days (yeah, I've got a full time job too, and had been traveling!) ... I had to go to a tmobile store and side by side test with a WM 6.0 dash. Same everything - settings etc. 6.0 works. 6.1 not.
And where would I officially report this?
Even more of a tragedy since I absolutely loved everything else in 6.1
PLEASE PLEASE (whoever does these things) - please post a fix or rom update!
Please!
Thanks

I would recommend waiting for an official release from T-Mobile or HTC before filing any bug reports.
"Hi, I downloaded a hacked beta rom from some website and it doesn't work right" doesn't usually get them moving fast.
Well, I sort of meant reporting this to whomever ported. I honestly don't know the logistics here of what ROM I have or how it came about. the point of confusion (on this point) is that the announcement and link for the 6.1 release actually appeared on a T-Mobile affiliated blog or site (forget which) - giving the perhaps mistaken impression that this was some sort of official release for the Dash - only that T-mobile was not yet supporting it. I definitely claim ignorance here.
My comment about reporting the bug - was more about letting the person/team who "ported" WM 6.1 to the Dash know about this issue. I am sure they would want to know (especially if this issue was specific to the port). Just because I posted a thread on this issue does not mean that the right people know about it yet - which is why I mentioned it.
Thanks
smtp problem with wm 6.1
is there a solution to this problem yet? I have the same problem since upgrading to 6.1. I've noticed that it appears to be related to smtp authentication. It seems to work ok on an earthlink account i have, which does not require smtp authentication.
No solution yet. Problem still persists (though intermittent). Seems to be related to 6.1 not resetting or saving a security certificate or something. But I am no expert. All I know is I can no longer rely on my Dash for SMTP email since upgrading to 6.1
i'm having the exact same issue
i have my phone setup for imap with gmail and i can receive perfectly fine, but it wont send
i delete the account and recreated it and it worked but after a few hours stop sending again
any fix?

Has anyone managed to get the auto notify of messages working with a Blue Angel on the O2 network?
i've registered for email-to-sms and the device is definitely receiving some kind of notification, but the activesync isnt trying to connect to the server to resynch against the remote mailbox.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Num
Which email-to-sms service have you registerd with? I know O2 don't offer that.
JD

This appears to offer what I'm looking for!
Very interesting!
I've been reviewing a whole host of 'push email' solutions available to O2 users here in the UK.
GoodLink, Smartner, Intellisync..... etc
I don't receive mail particularly often; hence I think the inbuilt auto-check would be an unnecessary waste of GPRS data bandwidth. Besides, it defeats the purpose of 'push mail'!!!
The service you've mentioned looks like it may make AUTD a viable option.
I have an O2 XDA IIs by the way, and have been waiting for the O2 Blackberry ROM update to be released (aaarrgh)!
Will give your suggestion a go.
carl, let me know if you get it going.
Like i said, mine seems to be working as I can track the message leaving the exchange environment and entering my sendmail scanner before being delivered to the mmail.co.uk mx gateways.
the device does appear to receive something, but i've got no idea what.
Suppose I should probably switch my SIM to a non-MS mobile and see what arrives.
as you said its not true push, and costing 10p to receive an SMS may seem excessive but it depends on usage, and apparently you can configure the sms notification to a timed period, say once an hour. This hopefully would mean that even if you dont have a mail in an hour, no sms will be sent thus you only actually sync when the server acknowledges receipt of new mail.
Look forward to hearing your results.

Mmail has been around for years but this has nothing to do with AUTD on your exchange. Bit of a nasty compromise.
Much more interesting are rumours of Windows Mobile 5.0 and a service pack for exchange 2003 that will fully integrate push email.
JD
Hi,
I've tried that here in Germany with O2 and it didn't work either. Previously when I had a vodafone account it worked without problem.
After some investigation I found out that O2 is adding some kind of signature (or removing some characters, don't remember). There is nothing you can do about it, you need a different e-mail to SMS provider!
We are currently using GFI Faxmaker's SMS gateway with an account from an SMS provider.
Tried a number of different configurations!
No luck in trying to het the mmail.co.uk service to work with AUTD on exchange server.
Guess I'll have to hold out for the proposed Windows Mobile 2005/ Exchange Server SP2 solution!!!

I am holding off buying the device until this is available. Any idea on when and on what fixes it will have?
Latest update from O2:
" Blackberry for the xda2s is still on the way we are actually testing this in conjunction with RIM and our enterprise server support team. We still do not have a confirmed date for release as there are still some bugs in the system. I know it is frustrating but we have to be sure that it will integrate fully with the xda so as to provide a powerful piece of kit. "
They also denied that AUTD would work on O2 due to Microsoft's implementation of the notifications (nothing to do with how they mangle any messages).
To his credit, the analyst who mailed me back tried to appease me by describing the steps to get it synching on a schedule, but this isnt ideal as everytime is synchs, even if nothing has changed, thats data being used. The bonus of AUTD is the device only synchs when it KNOWS something has changed.
Still waiting and to be honest I'm in serious doubt if it will ever appear and might get rid of my device.
Oh no, that is bad news. I only want the device because it is supposed to support Blackberry so I don't have to carry around two devices. If it doesn't come out then they have lost a sale with me. Oh well. It is good to hear they are testing and won't release it until it works, doesn't always happen this way!
I've heard that this service will work with AUTD, but don't know myself as I don't use it:
http://www.winplc.com/products/textmail.aspx
There are a lot of e-mail-to-SMS services you can use. It's just O2's service that is causing the problems.
You could also install your own e-mail->SMS gateway
We are currently using GFI Faxmaker's SMS gateway solution, it works just fine with O2!
First of all, a disclaimer I am in no way affiliated with this company.
I just thought to let you know about the fact that I found a company who offers FREE MS Exchange hosting, with 1GB (!) mail storage, with push email for WM5.
After I flashed my unit yesterday, I bumped to this on Google. I signed up, and it seem to work fine. The only catch so far is, that they offer some ads in the webmail, and you cannot access it via POP, but other than that its fully functional. And there seem to be no ads sent to your mobile. (So far)
Its here: http://live.mail2web.com/
Offcourse, you still need to have GPRS data on your phone account, but this is usually much cheaper than to get a blackberry service. At least in Europe it is.
Regards,
Bela
Did you intend to offer up what the name of the service was?
NEVERMIND THIS POST. I was reading too fast. LOL
I think the only negative to mail2web's push mail service is that your email will have to be [email protected], if you want your current email address you'd have to upgrade to a charged account. http://mail.port88.org is an alternative that does provide email masking, you would have to forward your mail to your port88 account. www.emoze.com is another provider, you simply download the software to your pc and phone and it syncs between the two. I haven't tried any myself , you can read the thread on Port88 http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-273878.html. Hope this helps
You can forward all mails from your existing mailbox to go to the mail2web.com account as well.
You can even setup, that the mail2web account fetches your pop or imap mailboxes for you, but only once per hour i think.
I use the forward, that way I have my incoming mails kept in my original pop mailbox, and just auto forward a copy to the mail2web acc.
Regards,
Bela
There was one software which I hoped I could get running on the smartphone, as that was Pocket IRC. I tried and tried (even with SPHelper, there's an adjust option that makes it appear) but no amount of workarounds got it running. I need my DCC, err I want, rather.
Just installed emoze seems to be working very well, will check my GPRS usage online tom to see if used much data through the night, has a built in data counter but want to know over all data.
Will post findings as seems to be a good push mail client.
Please do I'm very interested in your results.

To be hoest i'm rather dubious about data as it has to connect o there server before push and always keep the GPRS connection active...
That's somewhat discouraging. Hmm well I'll have to check it out myself and see if I want my default or what have you
So did you ever end up getting the data usage, as I am just curious to find out how much it uses?

Hi All, new here...I have a HTC TP2 with Winmo 6.5 installed. Here's my situation, a couple days ago I used to received emails from my gmail account, now all of a sudden I can just send and not recieved any emails from gmail. My yahoo and hotmail accounts are running fine. Anyone have any ideas why my gmail is not receiving??? I spoke to one of the TMobile reps and it seems all they can do is HARD RESET the device. Any help? thanks in advance
I use Seven for my push e-mail, google, yahoo, exchange all work flawlessly. Have you made any changes to your device around the time it stopped working?
no i haven't changed anything on my phone which is kinda weird, I really don't want to hard reset the phone since restoring things is taking a toll on me. I would like for it to be a last resort but on the other hand I might just end up doing it since Im flirting with the idea of flashing to one of the custom roms here in xda. any ideas?
just my two cents... yesterday I discovered that all of a sudden my Gmail account had disappeared from the account selector (leaving only Outlook), I could still see the emails but couldn't reach account settings or nothing
Somehow it returned, but with most settings in blank.. imap and smtp server, SSL options, all were in blank.. no idea why or how this happened, but filled all blanks up again and now Gmail's working fine...
Trouble w/ Gmail after WinMo 6.5 Sprint upgrade
Just upgraded my Sprint TP2 to WinMo 6.5 today. Why this update took so long to come to Sprint customers is beyond me, but overall, I'm pretty pleased with the update, save one problem that has made me "strategically relocate" my phone with sudden velocity...twice.
I've been trying to set up Gmail since this evening, with zero success. I had my Gmail account set up on the device before the upgrade/update, but now...
I've tried every known method to enter the settings, but whenever the device tries to connect to the Google servers, it tells me I need to check my user name & password, even though I've entered both correctly.
I've even logged into my Gmail account on my laptop, changed the password just to make sure I've entered the correct one, & the device still kicks back to the user name/password screen saying the settings are wrong...I KNOW THAT THEY'RE NOT!!!
I've seen several posts from users experiencing trouble with Gmail on 6.5, but these have all seemed to stem from Wi-Fi vs. other types of connections.
I've also installed Google Sync & my Gmail has DL'd to my device, but I prefer to get my e-mail through the normal account setup.
Sorry so lengthy & thanks in advance for any advice anyone may be able to provide.
not sure if it is googles problem or our phones but i spoke to a couple of people with iphones and gmail accounts and it seems that they arent having any problems receiving their gmails. Did windows take a dump sometime this week?

Thanx, sirgal. Actually, I had tried both ways - one with just the username and one with my entire e-mail address, both to no avail.
However, I say "had tried" because, lo & behold, today just as I'm about to contact HTC tech support to see if 6.5 was causing Gmail probs, I decided to try creating the account ONE MORE TIME. Murphy's Law prevailed and, for reasons unbeknownst to me...IT WORKED.
I did everything the exact same way as I tried yesterday, but this time success. I'm taking a strictly "don't ask, don't tell" approach as to why it worked today.
Thanks again for the suggestion!
I'm having a similar problem hopefully someone can help with. I've setup my gmail account and had it working fine until without any cause I can determine, the accout disappears except for still showing up on the TouchFlo e-mail "tab." When this first happened, I started from scratch and setup "Gmail2" which also worked for a while. The reason I had to name it Gmail2 is that when I tried to use Gmail as I had originally done it tells me that this name is already in use. It just did this to me again and sure enough, I had to name the account Gmail3 this time around. I don't understand why they are "disappearing" nor why the name is still in use and the previous 2 versions still show up on the TouchFlo e-mail tab and nowhere else.
Odd question, or at least I think it is as this is the closest thread to the actual problem I'm having that I've found here or the HTC forums. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

I have the exact same happened to me multiple times in the past. The only solution I found is to restore from a previous backup. Fortunately I backup at least once per week so it wasn't too disastrous but still annoying.
Unfortunately, I haven't ever done a backup (honestly never thought of it for a phone) so that isn't going to help. What I'm hoping for is if someone else has seen this and how to delete the ghost accounts. Thank you wearefree for the help.
I am trying to set up an Evo for one of the managers at my company
I used all the same settings (other than login/pass obviously) as the settings for my Evo to connect to my work account....
Here's the problem I am having.
I am trying to set it up as a POP account. But it always comes back saying that it had a problem connecting.
On the email server side (I am also the network admin) I can see that the phone is trying to connect, but it never sends the login credentials.
From this phone, I tell it to update and the email server displays the IP address and "Logging On" and just sticks there until it times out.
On MY Evo (same settings in email client) the server displays "Logging On" for approx 1 second, then displays my login.
This tells me that it is a problem with the new Evo, and not server configuration.
The only difference I can find is that my Evo, and one other Evo that are currently working correctly are Hardware Version 0003, where the one that is giving me problems is Hardware Version 0004.
From everything I have read, the only difference betwwen the 0003 and the 0004 is the camera.
Has anyone else experienced this? This phone is for the VP of Operations so my ass is kinda on the line here.
Sorry if this post seems a little scatterbrained, but thats just how my head is working right now because of this situation.
Can you login with his account on your phone?
Have you tried your account on his phone?
I highly doubt this is a phone problem.
Is wifi on? I know its a dumb question but as weird as it sounds when wifi is on the email app gets angry.

saw an app called k9 in the market for mail. Might wanna check it out. Sorry I couldn't help more. If anything I bumped this thread for ya.
There is a mail app called Spider Mail I believe that works well. I had a problem with my student e-mail account and for some reason that bypassed it.
The above steps sound reasonable to try.
However, reason for my posting is, what is the justification for going POP over imap? Or do you intend on leaving the messages on the server?
As for K9, it's one of the better more robust email clients for android. Updates are released at least once a week on their google development site. My experience with it is strictly in an imap environment. It works exceptionally well in this config. Can't comment on its pop implementation.
His login works from mine.
No accounts work from his.
Wifi off for initial configuration. Have to make sure it resolves the address correctly over mobile connection instead of caching how the mail server address resolves within my network.
Messages will remain on server, pop3 is fine (and is the configuration that is working on my evo)
I want to retain the stock mail app, makes support easier if everyone is set up the same.
Thanks for all the responses. I'm thinking a factory reset may be in order.
You could try installing alogcat, attempt the server connection, then review the phone's log to see what errors are detected.

thanks, I will give this a shot.
Thanks for all the help. The problem ended up not being the phone at all. It was a really screwy problem with active directory.

Lol. Trust me, wasn't my decision to use any Microsoft products. I inherited it from my predecessor. And I have yet to find a reliable way to migrate away from exchange.
Hi,
It seems that I have a systematic security error when active syncing while I'm roaming. I did not have this error on my previous phone : push was disabled but I could sync manually.
And of course, sync works fine when not roaming.
I havd read that ICS does support some more parameters for the active sync protocol but what could lead to that error message only when roaming?
Thanks.

Coming back to this, Touchdown does sync when roaming, so the issue seems to be more on client side than server one.
Nobody else is facing this issue?
Hi, sorry that I re-post on this one, but the truth is that I still have this very same problem for already 9 or 10 months.
Exchange Sync is not working properly when I'm roaming... Scenarios are as follows:
- Sync works just fine when I'm not roaming or via Wifi
- When I'd land in a different country, I'd get a couple of syncs working fine
- Then after 1 hour or 2 max, sometimes not even, sync stops working and the Exchange process is emptying my battery in less than 1 hour...
- When I go back on Wifi (e.g. hotel) or when I get back home, that's it, sync works fine again...
I fail to understand what can the cause of this and where to look for solutions or workaround...
As said earlier, I checked with Touchdown and syncs work just fine, roaming or not roaming... But I'm a "stock" guy and I don't want to use Touchdown just because of this roaming active sync that is not working...
Any recommendation on what I should look for? Anyone who would be having roaming active sync working?
Thanks.
PS : I'm on JB stock. I had the same problem with ICS stock and with ICS AOKP before...
Its possible you have a policy on your exchange server that doesn't allow syncing while roaming.
I experience the same battery drain you speak of while roaming. So to save battery life I disable data if I don't need it or sync only when I'm connected to WiFi.
Thanks a lot for the answer. I think I was not clear in my earlier post. My issue is not that the sync is not working, it is that I don't even have the possibility to manually sync and thus access my emails when I request them...
Maybe that's a DNS issue. Does ActiveSync even hit your Exchange Server? Do you have access to the internet when you have problems syncing?
What was your previous phone? Not Android I'm guessing.
That being said, there remain a number of issues with the Exchange related code in the native client. I myself just submitted a calendar related defect that is scheduled for a fix in the next major release. My suggestion is that you go to http://code.google.com/p/android/issues and do a quick search. If you don't find anything then open an incident for this.
If you want to try to figure it out, it is helpful to enable debugging mode since it can show specifically what might be happening in your case (if you open a defect report then you will need this log too). Here's how:
choose add account in email settings and for the email address enter "[email protected]" with a password "debug" (no quotes). You will get a new account named "Debug" in the list. Tap that and check "enable extra debug logging" along with "Enable exchange sd card logging". Now reboot. When your phone is finished booting, email sync operations will be logged to a file named "emaillog.txt" on the root of the sdcard folder. To disable, rename emaillog.txt to something else or delete, then set up the debug account again and uncheck anything that's checked.
Also, checking "Enable Verbose mode" will log detailed sync operations that may be helpful in your case. Be forewarned however, that the log will grow quickly!
At this point in time, the Touchdown client is by far the best exchange related client for Android.
Thanks a lot for the extensive answer. I'll go through it in all details a bit later but I can already say that my previous phone was a Desire Z, so Android as well.

In many cases, the operator/manufacturer supplies their own email client which may have been the case in your previous phone. Nexus is pure Google however. My XP with the native client has been bad from day 1, but has gotten successively better. When ICS was released, I could finally connect with the native client. Now, I'm finally using the native client but haven't seen it in action when roaming yet.....

Thanks for your suggestion. I am not sure about the DNS issue : I have access to internet while I'm not able to connect to the activesync server. I do think that activesync does reach the exchange server. I see no reason why it wouldn't (Touchdown does reach it for example)...

Very good. I followed the instruction, was initially connected via Wifi and did get the log filled. Moved to 3G (still roaming) and so far it is working. It is not entirely new that sometimes it works for a while as I mentioned above. I'll update tomorrow after a longer testing time.
Thank you very much for the how-to on exchange logging... I should have looked for that myself directly
So, I had to wait a bit longer than usual for the thing to start not working when connected via mobile and roaming, but I eventually did get the error :
I have 3MB of log (I kept using the phone for a good while with logging on...) with error paterns again and again but I think the relevant line is that at some point in time I get:
Sync response error: 449
Then there is a bunch of other strange things which I guess are a consequence of this one...
I also have a log for when I was connected and via Wifi.
I'm back from my trip and, as usual, as soon as I'm connected to my operator's network, it does work again, just fine...
I googled a bit the 449 error code without getting to any conclusion...
What would you suggest? Should I submit a bug?
Thanks,
I'd post it as a defect and see what they say.
