Sorry I am a noob at this. I used Z4 root, to root my wifes Epic. But after I installed ROM Manager it told me I needed to flash clockwork mod. But everytime I try it wont do it. Any fixes?
Use the kbe click root/recovery in the development section, it's easy just follow directions, although u need a computer..

rom manager won't install clockwork without a compatible kernel. You can get around this by using the one click or finding one of the threads with the instructions to do it manually.

So I have an epic, with stock rom, rooted. I do have (rom manager) cwm, but am not suuper familiar with android and its jargon (am a winmob convert). After some searching I see that because I have cwm I won't get ota. Fine, let's get stock recovery...wait... uh. Yeah. I don't have a pc, nor do I have a library card :0
I rooted using z4root, and so didn't need a pc. Now I just want to get the OTA but can't quite figure out how to do that without a PC.
Note, the xda-app search feature is rough around the edges, and I did find data with just plain scrolling, but nothing on a PC-free way to get back to stock recovery mode...
Help?
Thanks

If all you did was root using z4root and changed nothing else, you will be able to get the OTA.
If you have removed any stock apps, restore them.
You should be fine

No. You will "get" the update, but it will fail verification when you try to install. Get the deodexed di18->eb13 update that is in the wiki and flash it from clockwork.

This was not my understanding from past updates. I apologize for the incorrect info there.
That is a much faster way anyway
Ok so usually I just use rom manager to place clockworkmod onto all my phones that I go through (now on the epic flashed to cricket). looked around the dev section and couldn't find it (I'm sure it's there but couldn't find it for the life of me) I tried rom manager but it is having an error each time I try to download the custom recovery, could someone please link me to the guide on manual installation and supply me with the recov files for the epic PWETTY PWETTY PWETTY PLEASE!

Hello Folks,
I recently purchased ROM Manager Premium and am unable to use it as anytime I try to flash ClockworkMod Recovery it says "An error occurred while downloading your recovery."
Now, I'm still a beginner when it comes to this sort of thing; Could it be because I already have this flashed from when I oden'd my phone to DK18/EB13? If so, are there any tips to get this functioning as I'd like to use it's features.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Last I've read in this forum, ROM Manager is not compatible with the Epic. Someone please correct me if I am incorrect.
Ugh. If that's the case I'll just have to use it on my gf's EVO to get my money's worth. I would find that disappointing since it is one of the options it allows you to select during the "Confirm Phone Model" dialog.
Hey I could be wrong, since I've never used the application. However, I believe I've seen theimpaler747, our local moderator, post that it doesn't work with the Epic. You can try using the advanced search feature on the forums to search for ROM Manager. There have been a few posts/threads about it in the past.
You are correct, Rom manager does not work correctly with the epic.

Yep sorry it doesn't flash cwm like it does for other phones. Have to run the one click root with cwm.

umm
I own an Epic and have used CWM to flash a few different ROMs, so I know they do have at least some compatability. I am currently in a "bricked" state, however- so take that as you will. I do not think CWM had anything to do with it though.
Rom Manager did work when I was on DI18 and successfully installed CWM. Now it sometimes works and I usually use it to just easily rename my backups I made with CWM in 3 fingered salute.
Lately I have seen that it will DL a couple of versions of CWM, but they won't work properly. The main reason I bought it was to send the developer of CWM some slush funds.

because the only way to receive the ota update is to be completely stock. as far upgrading to ICS, if you have clockworkmod recovery you can just flash any custom rom as long as you follow the instructions posted in the OP for that specific rom. If you dont have CWM than just use autoroot to flash a CWM recovery (since your on GB). Since your already rooted just use the option for flashing the recovery. Autoroot is a sticky thread i believe.
How do I know if I have CWM recovery?

You probably don't have cwm. Use the "sfhub's autoroot package" to get cwm. Search for it. Then head to android development section to get any custom rom.

sorry at kinda tied up at work
the link below is the link for shub autoroot package. download and unzip it. read the instructions very carefully as long as you follow them you will get clockworkmod recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
below is the link for the development section. here is where you can download the ROM you would like. We have a bunch of great devs so there are a ton of different ROMs to choose from FF18 is the official sprint update for the e4gt. personally i like the Blu Kuban ROM but you'll have to look through the threads and see what you like. There are some that are stock themed with root. Its all up to what you want. I would say look at the instructions for the ROMs very carefully as some ROMs need to be installed in 2 parts. So make sure you READ it twice if you have to.

If the rom supports it then yes. Read in the op of the rom you select and it will be usually listed if it includes wifi hotspot or not.

I was recently asked to post some threads here on XDA with the tutorials I have on my site. As time permits I will be posting a series of threads here to the Q&A section that will hopefully answer most questions that might come up.
If you can't find your answer in one of my threads I would highly recommend BluesRulez One Stop FAQ Thread. It is an awesome resource and has answers to just about every question I've seen come up!

This thread details the process of how to root your device without having to flash a full stock ROM. This method works for the Sprint, Boost and Virgin Samsung Galaxy S2 (SPH-D710, SPH-D710BST and SPH-D710VMUB).
This method uses an Odin One-Click Kernel to install a kernel that includes a Custom Recovery. Once booted into the Custom Recovery you can then flash Superuser which will root your phone and give you Superuser access.
Prerequisites:
A PC running Windows with the Samsung Mobile Drivers Installed. The Samsung Mobile Drivers are available here.
Any One-Click Kernel (preferably from the Android version you will be using, i.e. GB, ICS or JB).
All Sprint One-Click Recovery kernels can be found here.
For this particular tutorial I used the following kernels:
Gingerbread: Chris41g's EL26 Stock CWM5 Repack
Ice Cream Sandwich: Agat63's tFI27 Stock Recovery Repack (rev 2)
Jelly Bean: Agat63's Source-Built GB27 Recovery
Superuser (or SuperSU, MIUI Security, and etc) in a flashable zip, saved on your Internal or External SD Card. For this method I used SuperSU v1.25 (but any SU in a flashable ZIP should work). You can download several different versions here.
Although not required it is recommended that you have Samsung Kies installed on your PC as well. You can download Samsung Kies here.
Side-Effects:
This method will trigger the Yellow Triangle upon start-up and will increase your Odin count.
It will also change your startup screen to look like the International GS2 startup screen.
Both of these side-effects are very easy to overcome due to the hard work of Chainfire and Garwynn. You can get TriangleAway from Chainfire's thread here.
For the rest of the tutorial please visit my site: www.rwilco12.com
Enjoy!

Will any of these methods work with FL24? I'm new to rooting Samsungs and am used to simply rooting via exploits through ADB. I have the phone rooted (temp rooted?) via the exploit in Framaroot and am trying to get a custom recovery installed next to flash a ROM. Thanks!

The Kernel One-Click flashes the kernel and recovery together. They are combined on the E4GT.

You might have to turn SU on depending on which version you flashed. Open the app and see if under settings you see something like "Enable SuperUser" and make sure it's enabled.
If that doesn't fix it we may need to try another zip with a different set of symlinks. Either way, we're here for you and will get you squared away.

If you're asking - Can I flash VM builds on the Sprint D710, the answer is - yes. Did it when I tested the builds and everything worked properly.
If you're asking - Can I flash a VM build and be on VM service? Obviously you'll need to be activated to their service and provisioned properly. That's when you'd need to make sure that mmsc/apn/nv data is captured. I don't know if VM is a byod provider. (write that shiz down)

Yes. Many, many people have used this method successfully.
There's nothing wrong with a stock kernel, it just doesn't have a custom recovery packed into it or any kernel tweaks.
But I am confused... If you're already rooted why are you pulling your hair out?

Well mostly because I'm a noob lol. I heard also that if you do a factory reset with stock kernel you will brick it. But I want the extra options anyway. and really want to flash aJB ROM. Thank you very much for quick response, I shall give this a go in the morning.

K. Before you dive in too much further I would recommend doing a little more research. This device had had issues in the past that have made it very easy to brick. You should be very careful.
As a side note - This thread is a how to root thread but it sounds like you're already rooted. I don't know that there's any reason to reroot your device. You don't actually have to be rooted to get on JB either. You could just flash a one-click of a JB ROM.
