because the only way to receive the ota update is to be completely stock. as far upgrading to ICS, if you have clockworkmod recovery you can just flash any custom rom as long as you follow the instructions posted in the OP for that specific rom. If you dont have CWM than just use autoroot to flash a CWM recovery (since your on GB). Since your already rooted just use the option for flashing the recovery. Autoroot is a sticky thread i believe.

How do I know if I have CWM recovery?
How do I access autoroute?
Where can I x the roms

You probably don't have cwm. Use the "sfhub's autoroot package" to get cwm. Search for it. Then head to android development section to get any custom rom.

the link below is the link for shub autoroot package. download and unzip it. read the instructions very carefully as long as you follow them you will get clockworkmod recovery

below is the link for the development section. here is where you can download the ROM you would like. We have a bunch of great devs so there are a ton of different ROMs to choose from FF18 is the official sprint update for the e4gt. personally i like the Blu Kuban ROM but you'll have to look through the threads and see what you like. There are some that are stock themed with root. Its all up to what you want. I would say look at the instructions for the ROMs very carefully as some ROMs need to be installed in 2 parts. So make sure you READ it twice if you have to.

If the rom supports it then yes. Read in the op of the rom you select and it will be usually listed if it includes wifi hotspot or not.

Is it possible to only have Root+CWM w/ Hotspot? [EL29]

Hey guys, I'd like to apologize in advance if there is already a post or thread already out there for this, I swear I looked everywhere. Anyways, I'm not the smartest person in the world, but I know enough to flash custom roms, create nandroids, and how to get back to stock. My questions is, I want to run GB until ICS officially comes out, but is there anyway that I can only root+cwm my EL29 ROM and only have sprint hotspot hack? My objective is to keep the phone as stock as possible with the exception of root+cwm so I can nandroid, use Titanium Backup PRO, and connect my wireless devices to an actual hotspot, instead of using the wifi tether app. I'm currently running an EL29 custom rom that has all of the above, but sometimes I'd like to just have the "stock" TW feel without the theme and tweaks.
PS - The closest thing that I know of is the ACS AIO mods, but unfortunately I'm not able to even flash the mod for some reason...
ah... best i can say is odin stocked rooted el29 everything is the same as stock and if u wann unroot odin does that also and the hotspot hack there is a page on how u can install it w that stock set up.

Take a look in the android dev sections to this forum. If you ever update once rooted, you should be flashing a new ROM (clean or dirty flashing) to receive the next update. Running stock ROM in between a Sammy update and while having the older ROM without the newest update will yield that result.

There are plenty of reasons for rooting but remaining stock (such as: tethering, Droid wall, Titanium Backup to allow me to backup and restore app data, removing bloat, etc).
I have flashed custom rooms in the past on my Evo but right now I am happy with my S3 at stock.

I was in the same boat at you. I put it off for a while but finally decided to update tonight. I followed the steps posted here.
You can update your baseband by flashing a properly packaged official baseband zip, or flash from recovery tool (my preference), like the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29820376. There are also unofficial, or leaked basebands, available to flash from all-in-one zips, such as the one here: http://goo.im/devs/freeza/Galaxy-S-fre3-LIGFirmwareModemAIO.zip.
As far as the build version goes, that does not have to match your baseband (modem). Most of the ICS ROMs are LG8, although there are some LI3 ICS ROMs to choose from. There's also a leaked build of Jellybean, builds LIF & LIG, with a third leak LIH reportedly coming out tomorrow. Once rooted, you can update your build version by flashing the ROM of your choice, based upon the build of your choice.
One of the top developers, and probably the greatest asset to this community, is freeza. He explained the difference very well here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32095775
That's a long-winded response, but I hope it answered your original question, and helps you out.
Have fun!
Edit: Once you're rooted, you'll still receive OTA update notifications, which will continually annoy you until you choose to update and reboot. Once you reboot, the update will fail because of your custom recovery (you will NOT lose root) and the notification will go away....until the next OTA...

Excuse me for my stupidity but I'm new to android. I'm also using the sprint variant of the s3 and have it rooted with stock rom. However my build number is IMM76D.L710VPALF9. I'm assuming the last 3 are the update versions. What is the current version and how do I update to it?
Also, I'm rooted with Clockwork mod 5.5.0.4. How do I upgrade this to version 6.0.1.2? Will I have to unroot then root again?
Thanks for clearing anything you can up. Don't mean to pirate the OP but I figured I'd post in this thread rather than make a new one. Thanks again.

You can flash a new recovery using ODIN, or Mobile ODIN. I use Mobile ODIN. There's a thread on recoveries here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31894089

That is one of the reasons that I am rooted... so I can use WiFi Tether. I do not it much. Hardly any data at all. But when I am in a spot and need a wireless connection and I only have my phone it comes in handy.
Some other reasons:
- DroidWall: Lets me block individual apps from accessing the internet.
- AddFree: Block ads in some apps.
why would you do that?

[TUTORIAL] How To Root the Sprint Galaxy S2 (SPH-D710)

I was recently asked to post some threads here on XDA with the tutorials I have on my site. As time permits I will be posting a series of threads here to the Q&A section that will hopefully answer most questions that might come up.
If you can't find your answer in one of my threads I would highly recommend BluesRulez One Stop FAQ Thread. It is an awesome resource and has answers to just about every question I've seen come up!
__________________
This thread details the process of how to root your device without having to flash a full stock ROM. This method works for the Sprint, Boost and Virgin Samsung Galaxy S2 (SPH-D710, SPH-D710BST and SPH-D710VMUB).
This method uses an Odin One-Click Kernel to install a kernel that includes a Custom Recovery. Once booted into the Custom Recovery you can then flash Superuser which will root your phone and give you Superuser access.
Prerequisites:
A PC running Windows with the Samsung Mobile Drivers Installed. The Samsung Mobile Drivers are available here.
Any One-Click Kernel (preferably from the Android version you will be using, i.e. GB, ICS or JB).
All Sprint One-Click Recovery kernels can be found here.
For this particular tutorial I used the following kernels:
Gingerbread: Chris41g's EL26 Stock CWM5 Repack
Ice Cream Sandwich: Agat63's tFI27 Stock Recovery Repack (rev 2)
Jelly Bean: Agat63's Source-Built GB27 Recovery
Superuser (or SuperSU, MIUI Security, and etc) in a flashable zip, saved on your Internal or External SD Card.  For this method I used SuperSU v1.25 (but any SU in a flashable ZIP should work). You can download several different versions here.
Although not required it is recommended that you have Samsung Kies installed on your PC as well. You can download Samsung Kies here.
Side-Effects:
This method will trigger the Yellow Triangle upon start-up and will increase your Odin count.
It will also change your startup screen to look like the International GS2 startup screen.
Both of these side-effects are very easy to overcome due to the hard work of Chainfire and Garwynn. You can get TriangleAway from Chainfire's thread here.
For the rest of the tutorial please visit my site: www.rwilco12.com
Enjoy!

You might have to turn SU on depending on which version you flashed. Open the app and see if under settings you see something like "Enable SuperUser" and make sure it's enabled.
If that doesn't fix it we may need to try another zip with a different set of symlinks. Either way, we're here for you and will get you squared away.

If you're asking - Can I flash VM builds on the Sprint D710, the answer is - yes. Did it when I tested the builds and everything worked properly.
If you're asking - Can I flash a VM build and be on VM service? Obviously you'll need to be activated to their service and provisioned properly. That's when you'd need to make sure that mmsc/apn/nv data is captured. I don't know if VM is a byod provider. (write that shiz down)

Yes. Many, many people have used this method successfully.
There's nothing wrong with a stock kernel, it just doesn't have a custom recovery packed into it or any kernel tweaks.
But I am confused... If you're already rooted why are you pulling your hair out?

K. Before you dive in too much further I would recommend doing a little more research. This device had had issues in the past that have made it very easy to brick. You should be very careful.
As a side note - This thread is a how to root thread but it sounds like you're already rooted. I don't know that there's any reason to reroot your device. You don't actually have to be rooted to get on JB either. You could just flash a one-click of a JB ROM.

[Q] what's the deal with 4.3?

- For android 4.3, there has been a lot of talk on the developer section, and from what I can see, the major bugs/issues have been fixed. Like the ROM not rebooting correctly. For those using 4.3, is this true?
- Also, from what I understand, this was due to the recoveries not being ready for 4.3, however CM released their own bare bone recovery to fix that issue. And then I've read that the TW recovery has also been updated to solve this problem.
-There is a lot of information in the development forums, but I have not seen any post on the steps on what to do in order to upgrade from 4.2 to 4.3.
-Right now I have CWM 5 recovery, because that's been working for me, and I never bothered changing (bad experience with trying to upgrade/change a recovery). Now from what I understand, I should be able to flash the newest touch recovery (via the goo app?), and then wipe and flash any 4.3 ROM. Any detail instructions would be a help, or if someone can create a tutorial post, that would be great.
Thanks in advance.

I hope it helps. I have been on hellybean 4.3 for two days and everything is running great.

You could just install ROM Manager and update from there. It's super-easy (you need ROOT, but I presume you have that since you're flashing ROMs anyway). :good:

Many people have had bad experiences with ROM Manager. Especially in the Gingerbread days when its use was more common for this sort of thing.
Just my 2 cents.

Interesting -- always been good to me, although I only use it to update the recovery; for the ROM itself I use Cyanogen's update util. I also use CWM, not TWRP, so there's that...

Ur best and safest approach would be to DL Odin and the drivers for ur phone, then go to techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules and DL twrp2.6.0.4, this is the 4.3 compatible version, then put ur device in DL mode and connect to odin, load the tar file in PDA and click start, 30 sec and u have the latest and greatest twrp recovery, now go get hellybean 4.3 or beanstalk4.3 and flash it, watch the beauty take place...

I updated my rom today like I usually do from the CMUpdater and it updated from 4.2 to 4.3. I didn't mean or want to do that, but it didn't tell me otherwise. Now I'm having issues left and right......the one time I don't back it up...grrr.
I'm having the most issues with Gapps. I downloaded the new one and installed it and Google Music and Youtube keeps crashing. I guess I'll be doing the full wipe now.
Did u update to 4 3 gapps? It won't do it automatically, even if u updated through goo it just looks at what version is installed and updates that version, 4.3 gapps can be found in any 4.3 thread

He said it should work so I used this app to check my binary so I used this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noshufou.android.su.fixer&hl=en
and it says no binary installed. But I had this one installed https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noshufou.android.su&hl=en. So I thought it would be smart to install this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.superuser&hl=en.
Now my phone is stuck in this recovery cycle and won't turn on.
Please help! I hope I didn't mess my phone up.

After doing some research while waiting for a reply on this. Correct me if i'm wrong but I will need to flash a different rom? If that is correct, how do I do that? I always use the stock roms.

Yeah I can get in that mode. What do I do once I am in that mode? Sorry Im not really good with this type of stuff. When I get in download mode it says "Downloading.. Do not turn off target."
What should I do from here?
I'm guessing once I get my phone home and plug it in and run odin it should be pretty self-explanatory. So disregard my last post. I will ask questions when I run into them. Thanks for your help
Download the stock tar and follow the instructions

Do what GhostAssassin said. Once your back on stock you can flash cf-auto root and TWRP recovery if you want... just like you did before. As for going about getting hotspot unlocked, dont use generic methods/apps unless you want to run into this kind of problem. There are much better and easier ways of doing this. Do some searching in your specific device forums instead. With all the steps you went through you could have flashed one zip and been done. You could have also flashed a stock rooted rom such as mine and been in business in no time. Before you attempt mods and things in the future, make sure it's fully compatible with your specific device because there are differences in code from one device to another., depending on what it is.

Thank you. You said he are using a stock rooted rom? Can you point me in the direction to get that? Sounds just like what I'm looking for.

Did you install a custom recovery?

Yes. you must install a custom recovery in order to flash a custom or stock rooted rom. At this time TWRP is the only recovery that officially supports our Sprint Note 4. Trying other recoveries for other note 4's "might" work but in my opinion if it isn't fully tested and confirmed by the recovery project team then you shouldn't flash it on your phone. With that said, look in the Original development forum here in the Sprint note 4 forum and you will find the TWRP thread. Same for CF-auto root... just do a search and you will find it.

I don't know what that means. But I'm running just the stock rom.
Go into settings/About device/Software version. At the very top you will see which rom version you're on. The last three letters is the version you have. Look in my Hybrid Edition rom thread in the 3rd post in mods section. I only made the zips for NK2 but I can make the NIE mods later. Most pople have probably upgraded to NK2. Find out if your rom is odexed or deodexed before flashing and download the one you need.

Yep It is NIE. Now how do I tell if it is odexed or deodexed?
Unless you have flashed a custom rom on your phone you still have the factory installed odexed rom. If you have fladhed a stock odin rom .tar then it will also be odexed. If you never flashed a custom rom you will be odexed. I went through a bit of trouble making the odexed hotspot mod. Its very rarely done for stock odexed roms. But I know theres people out there who want it for their stock rom.
