So is there a way to make my G2 to automatically switch to 2G when the screen is turned off, and then revert back to 3g/hspa+/etc when the screen is turned back on? I'm assuming this would improve battery life right? Or will it make it worse since its constantly switching signals and such?
Thanks for any input guys!

It's possible if you use CPU tuner wich has profiles specific to 2g speeds. Assuming your rooted of course.

Juice defender does this job, 2G or no data its up to you whenever your on sleep
Fly like a G2
I'm not sure how much of an impact this would have on battery life.
I have not tried it but from my experience, the phone turns from a Sprinter to a Marathon Runner when using 2G versus 3G/H+
I would think that the constant switching of signals would hinder the battery life, but if you leave your phone alone and on sleep regularly then it may help. The screen on my phone is always going on and off from regular use so this isn't really an option for me.
Another thing to consider is that if you have to install a program that does this 'switching' task for you, that program is another process that must always run in the background, draining the battery.
Might just want to give it a shot and see how it is after a few days use, if its worse you can always go back... Just my two cents.

+10000 for Juice Defender. Works like a charm, but as stated above if you're regularly turning the screen on/off back and forth (aka lots of texting or w/e) Juice Defender might not help too much because toggling the data on and off constantly does hurt battery.
Now i should add that Juice Defender doesn't work on Gingerbread yet, and I've had great battery life keeping 3g on all the time.

Hi guys!
So I use Juice Defender Ultimate to squeeze out that extra juice from our wonderful phone. And up until now everything was fine. But I realize now that because I will be relying on WiFi calling to be able to use my phone at home (and in most other places that I go since I know WiFi uses less battery than network) I will need WiFi to always be active. I was reading my settings in Juice Defender and I can't figure out what setting I need to click in order to always keep wifi active. Any ideas? Is it even worth it to use Juice Defender anymore now that I always need wifi to be on?
Thanks for all the help!
In Juice Defender's control setting there is an "Keep enabled" setting, click on wi-fi to make sure it is always enabled.
Thank you! Is it worth it to use Juice Defender anymore if I use this setting? Will I still see battery enhancements? I was seeing JD reporting 2x battery...I doubt I will see that now...
IMO, Juice Defender is completely unnecessary.
You can set almost every single of the options manually in their respective apps/settings.
What is the point of putting a blanket on your phone that controls how often things update? Just change the settings in the respective apps/settings..
For example, I use LauncherPro Plus.. in my FB widget settings, I have it set to update every five minutes.. why would I put another app on that blocks it to only update every 15 or 30 minutes? That's not "saving" battery, it's resetting your update time interval. If I wanted to do that, I would just set LauncherPro to only update every 15 or 30 minutes..
I can give more examples, but to me the whole thing is pointless. Why would I want a 4G phone that's super fast if I'm going to hobble it to Edge and save AT MOST an hour or two of battery?
Honestly, I get the same or better battery life with my phone the way it is setup without Juice Defender. I've yet to find one reason to use it, and yes, I have the "Ultimate" version.
What I want is a phone that's always fast AND gets great battery life. It's not a magic trick if your turning everything off (Sync, Wifi, 4G) and getting a hour or two more of battery life..
You will still see battery enhancements, but not as much. Wi-fi uses less juice than 4G.
To the above poster, the point of Juice Defender is for it to turn things off when you don't need them. It's also convenient to globally set your syncing. I definitely get way more than a bonus 2 hours of battery life using Juice Defender more like at least 5 hours, and it doesn't really interfere with my daily tasks. I definitely do not need 4G on when my screen is off, and it syncs so I am perfectly fine with that. 4G is a huge battery drainer so I want that off whenever I can.
For those of you unfamiliar, JuiceDefender is a tool which toggles WiFi and Data when the phone is off, and turns on WiFi only when in a location where there's an accessible network. This software more than doubled my battery life on my Bionic, and so it was one of the first things installed on my phone.
I've noticed JuiceDefender has been sucking a fair amount of battery on ICS/GNex (usually 4% in the battery graph), so today, for an experiment, I uninstalled it for the day, and I've noticed that I've gotten better battery life than I ever have with the phone, across a mix of WiFi areas and 3G.
Has anybody else had this experience, or was this just an odd one-off situation? Could there have been a change in ICS which diminishes the need or hurts the usefulness of it?
I've had JuiceDefender off too and for me I seem to get slightly worse battery without JuiceDefender. Without JuiceDefender on I tend to get a steeper battery drain during idle times compared to leaving wifi and 3G on. I think the usefulness of it depends a lot on your usage habit and signal quality as well. I usually get spotty signals so that is probably why JD helps noticeably.
Interestingly though if you take a look at the battery graph in settings, every time JD toggles your data on it seems to force the phone into awake state, but just leaving data on would keep the phone in an idle state most of the time. That's definitely something that is making JD not as good as if should be.

Honestly I think the only time you get noticeable battery improvements with juice defender is with periods of no use. Which is why it works good for me, on work days that is

Totally agree with this.
That's odd, as for me, the phone is mostly in my pocket all day. Maybe it's because I've got a 15 minute synchronization time for most things?
Day three without JD, still getting twice the battery life that I was getting with it on. Delightful.
I don't like any Kind of app that claims IT saves battery life because it just doesn't work! Fact is that its just another apps that sucks resources out of your phone!

Going to have to disagree and while there are many variables juicedefender can offer big saves depending on your usage. I have had 1.6x increase as stated in the app and confirmed by the extra hours with the incredible. I am waiting to try it with the GN until I have a idea what battery life is without it. First week is useless anyways with a new device as you check it more often and the OS is still refining the battery meter.
Its all related to how you use your phone. Disabling Wifi, Data, BT and so on automatically, managing autosync saves battery. The app itself sucks almost no battery power - if i can believe my monitoring app (SystemPanel 1.1.1) which i use unfrequently to control app behaviour on my Galaxy S1 (with ICS and before that, on GB). Im taking up this "Old" posting because i have battery issues on ICS - almost half of the lifetime after upgrading from GB. But i think its because im now more playing around with the phone, no app is sucking more power than usual.
I noticed that JD cant control networking (via apn change) anymore, can somebody confirm that? If i turn the display on, my 3G/HSDPA connection is there - under GB it took 3-5 seconds until i had internet connectivity back.
This is a small easy fix that I use whenever I am trying to conserve my battery on the go. It is very simple I just disable my mobile network/ 3G Data under wireless settings. Using 3G/4G data consumes alot of the battery for some reason I've noticed more drain on 3G. This helps me alot with saving my battery for a day on heavy usage and I can still receive calls and text msgs. Then just use wifi when you browse or simply turn your Data back on. Hope it helps
You'd be better off with an app like "easy battery saver" which turns off your mobile data when your screen is off but still allows you to use the device when you need to without constantly toggling.

Why would i neuter my phone?

i use juice defender ultimate and setcpu to undervolt and set the cpu to 1ghz max. I havent noticed a single hitch, so its worth it for me. Also using Blazer 4.1. i never actually run my battery down since I charge overnight for the next day, but if I were to i could easily get 35+ hours on medium use.
I do that whenever I am in an area with poor signal or roaming. A Sprint phone will eat up battery hunting for 3g signal

That's for sure. I get pretty bad battery life..

whats your screen time? that makes the biggest difference. I went 35 hours and only went down to 51% once, but that was only with about an hour of screen time.
Best jump in battery life I've had it's flashing a modem from the ICS leaks.

I think turning mobile data off at all would be for only extreme cases where I was going to be away from a charger for a crazy amount of time. For me, the use of widgets (google reader, apw facebook and twitter) allow me to turn on my phone, flip to a few home screens, and turn it back off. Screen time for me is always incredibly low, which keeps my battery life high.
I do this when I'm running low on battery with no charging option

Juice Defender set on defaults gives me from 1.60 to 2.07 times normal battery life. I use the default Balanced settings and forget about it.
Works great!!
Does this combination work well?
I've tried it in GB and ICS. The app hasn't been updated in a long time. My experience with it varies from day to day. It'll definitely do its job and turn off data, but when its suppose to reconnect, there are times when it won't reconnect with Verizon. It takes a reboot or airplane mode to get data again.
Thoughts? I sometimes get worse battery life because it spends a lot more time looking for data when I try to use the phone or it's trying to pull data.
Thanks!
Its a waste just toggle data yourself and turn sync off for things that don't necessarily need.

Imo, its better to just leave android doing self maintainance. ive tried many so called battery savers but they dont give any significant impact.
better just tone down your usage a bit or get a bigger replacement battery.
I personally love Juice Defender. I haven't had any issues with it reconnecting to (3g/wifi) when I turn the screen back on, either with ICS or Jelly Bean. With the way I use my Nexus, notice a substantial increase in battery life. But I can see how JD isn't for everybody, since we all use our devices differently.

+1. I love it. If i disable it somehow and forget to turn it on, MAN does my battery drain faster! It works extremely well in JellyBean and in ICS. With advanced mode and a little common sense, it's perfect.
I downloaded and installed Juicedefender ultimate.... For the first time in quite some time, I was still at 50% battery after 8 hours of regular usage.
It'll turn off wifi and turn off data when the phone's sleeping and only sync when the phone is turned on or by schedule ( I set mine to every 15mins).
It's worked great for preserving battery life on my phone when using Dman's PACMAN 18.2.
And this is with the stock battery?

This one gives me 2 solid days of use with extended battery.
Couldn't believe how quickly battery died without & how long it seems to last with.
Plus the guy's on here. Support local talent.
Even gives "Pro" free to XDAer's.
yes stock battery .. the other day I was at 30% after 15 hours ..
Juice defender actually memorizes where you are (somehow) and will turn wifi on in my house and this other site i go to where the signal is weak .. just auto switches it on for me when the screen wakes up, really really great app.
This other one above, i tried the version off of the store but juice defender kicked its ass ... Soooo many features in JD its a bit confusing in areas to setup, but the battery life is by far worth the cost of the pro app. Ill try the Battery Saver app that MoodSwinger posted above, see if theres a big diff or not.
