Hey everyone. I have an HTC Desire CDMA on U.S. Cellular. I had the pre-installed version of Android, 2.1, and I had rooted it using the unrEVOked method. Recently, the 2.2 update became available on the HTC website, so I decided to attempt an update. During the update, it hung at a screen with silver HTC letters and gave me error 171, being that there was a USB connection problem. I unplugged the USB cord and the screen switched to an HBoot type of screen with EUU selected, but nothing was able to be clicked on. If I plugged the cord back in, it would go back to the HTC screen. The only way to get out of it was to remove the battery.
Well I went on like this for a few more tries, with compatibility mode on the PC, running as administrator, switching which mode the phone was in when it was plugged in, and I never got it to work. I read somewhere that I needed to enable S-ON, but the utility to do that never worked.
There's a lot more tinkering I did, but nothing major. Eventually, I went into the recovery part of HBoot and wiped everything I could see. Now my phone would no longer boot into Android 2.1 as it had been doing before. When I started it up, it would just go to the HBoot screen and recovery screens.
I have attempted a few images of said-to-be-working U.S. Cellular HTC ROMs, but nothing has worked. I currently have a phone stuck in HBoot, and the only way I can get into it is to mount the SD card in the recovery screen and access files there. I can still install .zips from the SD card, so if there is one that would help me out, that would be just fabulous.
Now, the ideal thing would be to be able to just move right onto 2.2. Unfortunately, I don't think this will work. So I will be just fine if someone can help me restore it to 2.1, like it was when I first got it.
Also, I've been contemplating just taking it to my U.S. Cellular booth in the mall and asking if she can do a complete wipe/restore of the original software. Can the people in the stores do that? When I got it, the woman there didn't seem like she knew much about Android, so I don't think she would be able to tell that I had rooted it. Would she give me a replacement phone? What should I tell her that happened? By stretching the truth, I could say that it messed up during the update and I'm stuck with nothing on my phone now, but I don't know if she could do anything about it.
Anyway, I would REALLY like to get this fixed this weekend, and if that isn't possible, then within the next two weeks. If you have questions, feel free to ask. I'm new to these forums, but I would guess that it would email me if I get replies to this thread. If it doesn't, please email me at gavin at gavinroskamp dot com, where I'll be sure to reply.
Thanks again everyone, and I really really hope I can get this thing fixed!!!

Do you know anyone else with the same phone and carrier? You need to make a gold card so that you can recover ur phone with a non US Cellular ROM.ZIP or RUU. If you know someone then you can use their phone to make ur SDCard in to a goldcard which then let's u flash another carriers ROM.
Also have a read of this thread it has a lot of useful info....albeit related to gsm Desire but you might find some trick from the first post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831734

I did some researching for you and possibly others with the same effect as you had, i found this info posted by Joehunni on AndroidForums but it originally came from XDA so the original author is unknown. the similarity is the 171 ERROR that you reported:
"....Ok, so I know i'm not nearly the only person whos had a ****load of problems trying to run an RUU so this is for some of you that had the same issues as myself. I originally saw this posted on an xda forum and it worked for me so i'm passing it along. If you are trying to RUU and keep getting stuck at the "waiting for bootloader" screen and then it ultimately fails with usb connection error 171, try this. After going through said process, instead of unplugging the phone, pulling the battery, hanging your head, and saying FML, all you have to do is leave the phone as is after first failed RUU attempt then re-run it. I know it sounds rediculously simple and impossible but trust me, just run it a second time without messing with the phone or anything (still stuck at the black HTC screen) and then run the RUU installer again, IT'S THAT EASY, enjoy! Hoped this makes someone elses day, or rather, lifetime of the phone!...."
THIS THREAD gives you the RUU but alas not for US Cellular but will get you back to a working phone I think.....: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850617
I have found out. From doing this on my uscc desire. that the 171 error comes from a failed loading of the htc boot drivers. Try reinstalling the drivers that you can get from unrevoked.
I do know someone with the same phone/carrier, but she lives about 50 miles away. I'm not sure when the next time I'll see her will be, but it won't be until a major holiday. I've looked at a generic guide to making a goldcard, and it looks pretty intense. I feel that I would be able to do it if I had to though.
Now for the non-U.S. Cellular RUU. If I were to go this route, would I simply load a rom.zip onto my sdcard and boot, would I load it on into a folder and under recovery, choose to install it, or would it be like the 2.2 U.S. Cellular RUU that I have that requires verification that I have the 2.1 official software or whatever? Also, when I go to update to 2.2 using the U.S. Cellular RUU, will it fail again?
Overall, my ideal situation now would be to first get my phone back to a working condition, as in being able to receive phone calls/texts and stuff on U.S. Cellular, and it doesn't matter what ROM I have to use, as long as it makes the phone work as a phone. Then, the next step would be to reset to a default image and/or update to the HTC/U.S. Cellular 2.2 RUU.
I'm also kinda confused with the goldcard thing. If I get the goldcard, will I then be able to flash an HTC Desire ROM for alltel or whatever the carrier is? Will it disconnect me from U.S. Cellular if I try flashing it? At this point, I'm willing to try just about anything. I won't be able to make it to town this weekend (or most likely this week either) to see if the U.S. Cellular lady can completely wipe/restore or replace the phone, so I will try as many things as possible before then.
Hey guys, I got it working again! Turns out I was able to extract the ROM from the RUU updater for 2.2 for my phone, rename it to PB99IMG.ZIP, put it on the SD Card, boot into HBOOT, and it installed 2.2 and everything is working again! No need for anything else at all. I'm surprised!
If anyone needs the 2.2 image for an HTC Desire CDMA on U.S. Cellular because you accidentally did something wrong, or even if your RUU utility isn't working, just message me or reply to this or something and I'll send you a link to it. The best way to get ahold of me is gavin at gavinroskamp dot com, or to ask me on Twitter. @GavinRoskamp.
Cheers!
Glad you got it working again and also on US Cellular!
To make goldcard is two click software, its very easy just use the Goldcard tool for windows. I will email the program to you. Making a goldcard now just adds some table code to ur existing card and you can still use it as normal. Also that code is not removed even if you reformat the SDCard. The code is only read by your phone at the time of a ROM update, it allows non carrier ROMs to be flashed such as a "stock rooted" ROM which don't have all of the carrier bloatwares and an restrictions that your carrier may have built in.
EDIT: I got a bounce back from your e-mail when i attached the Goldcard tool so here is the direct link: http://www.multiupload.com/Z4OE18SV7J all this info is contained in the first thread that i pointed you towards in post #2.

Hi guys,
I have a Desire I bought unlocked on eBay. Though initially thinking it was factory unlocked, and having bought it under that pretense, I now think it's been unlocked by some other means. It doesn't appear to be rooted, having no superuser app but I'm not sure how else it could have been unlocked? If any one can shed some light here, that would be great.
I received the OTA update tonight, and after downloading and resetting it simply wouldn't get past 90% on the install before resetting itself. After about 15 minutes I switched it off and switched it on again, and it booted into my homescreen, with a "loading" alert and a rotating circle, no percentage.
Eventually that stopped, and it looked like everything was ok. I checked the version and it said I was running 2.2. Awesome, so I go about my business and realise I have no 3G or wireless connections. I check the settings and under WiFi it says "error", and I can't enable it. My APN is gone too. I can get that online, but it seems like there's an issue with the radio so I haven't bothered. It doesn't connect to the network anyway. It also resets occasionally, it seems when it has to load SenseUI but I can't confirm this.
What could it be? I'm not sure where the phone came from. It's a Black a8181 model with the Orange case branding, but the OS is unbranded. The locale is English (Singapore/Taiwan/a few others), though I thought the Black model was only in the UK. I'm in Australia, on vodafoneAU.
Is there anything I can do?
Cheers guys, I really hope I haven't (basically) bricked it.
Firstly, removing the SIM lock from the phone has nothing to do with rooting. Usually, you just stick in an "incorrect" SIM, and it will ask for an unlock code which you can buy online.
Given that the OTA update was a patch, it sounds to me like you have a partially patched ROM and this is causing your problems.
However, since it basically boots up and works to a fashion, it isn't bricked and chances are it is fairly easily recovered.
IMHO, you have two options.
1. Install a 2.1 RUU to downgrade your phone.
2. Root the phone using UnreEVOked and load a custom 2.2 ROM.
Both of these should be quite easily so long as your previous attempt to upgrade hasn't already updated HBOOT.
Turn you phone off and then power on again whilst holding down the volume down button - your phone should boot into HBOOT.
Look for the HBOOT version on the second line and post back what it says here.
Regards,
Dave
You've received a branded phone that has been debranded (you should have been told this) - you can't upgrade these without a goldcard. What's happened is part of the upgrade has worked, but other parts failed.
To recover you'll need a goldcard, which will be more difficult to make with the phone rebooting all the time.

If the OP can get UnrEVOked running, and doesn't mind having a custom recovery image (good thing!), he/she shouldn't need a goldcard.

That's true, though it does mean going down the custom ROM route, which might not be wanted.
Thanks guys, that's really good info.
I'm not too concerned about running custom ROMs, I've been thinking about doing it for a while, just don't know enough about how to root and flash. There are some good guides here, I'm just a bit nervous about doing it. I also don't know what the best ROM would be. I'm really just after a factory standard Desire with Sense ROM, the most out of the box it could be.
I assume an RUU is like a rollback? In which case, what would I be rolling back to. I have no idea how it was debranded, so I don't know what ROM I'd need to roll back to.
As for the goldcard, what would that do? Is that rolling back, or fixing what I have now? It doesn't crash too often, I can probably baby it through.
Sorry for the questions guys, just want to know my options. I didn't think it was too badly bricked, but you never know. I bricked my XDA Mini II trying to flash a new ROM, so you can see my hesitation :/
An RUU is an official way to flash the phone with HTC's own software. That is how the phone was debranded in the first place, and you can do the same to get it back to normal. It does require a goldcard though, which is a minor software patch on the sdcard.
If you root and install a custom ROM (and update the radio) you'll have a working phone again, and you can make a goldcard in your own time.
If I go with an RUU, will OTA updates work? That's really the only thing I'd miss about a custom ROM, the convenience of OTA.

You'll get ota updates if you use an ruu. Just make sure you have your goldcard in when you apply them.

Cool, will the process in the link in your sig do the trick? And the goldcard, will I need to keep it in permanently, or only when updating? Trying to decide if I should use a dedicated card for it, or include it on the card I keep in there.
Thanks for the help, I'll run the RUU tomorrow morning.
I'm trying to run unrevoked to root and reflash it, but it get's to a point and fails, saying "failed to flash recovery image".
Any thoughts?
EDIT:
I've now created a goldcard and am trying the downgrade process in the link in your sig. I've followed all the instructions, but when I ran the downgrade util, after asking for my password, nothing happens.

Yeah, that's my fault for leaving a testing point in the Mac/Linux version of the utility. It was mentioned in the bugs section, but probably not made clear enough. It's fixed now.
(RESOLVED!!)
Ok, so keeping it as short as possible. Brand new HTC desire on Orange UK. Full of all that Orange junk. Unrevoked root on it, all dandy. Spend at least an hour trying to figure out (I know google is my friend) why all the E:Can't nonsense was happening any time I tried making a back-up or flashing a ROM.
I moved onto alpha rev S-off solution at this point. Ran it, worked fine till part 3 then got the 'failed but don't worry it's not bricked'. Turn it back on and I've got a white HTC screen with black lines on normal startup, but POWER + VOL D works ok, but still S-on and and all the "E:Can't..." nonsense.
At this point I'm sitting in my onesie with a massive headache having not moved since about 1800 04/12/10, and now 12 hours later I've finally learnt my lesson, research as much as I can (thankyou google) and then ask any questions you cant find answers for before I plunge/stumble into another barbed and bear trapped solution.
So question is if I follow the recovery method used by Bubach28 and a few others, using .zips of the ROM the desire shipped with will it all go grand? My concern is that I didn't unbrand my desire. It's rooted but I didn't bother unbranding it. So now will I be able to use any old stock ROM or am I scuppered because I cant find an Orange specific zip or an Orange RUU?
I blame Oranges stupid 2.****e F-yo(u) version of Sense and my own stupidity equally on this one. Help and advice MUCH appreciated, otherwise I have a nice shiny new alternative for the spork I've always wanted.
Sorry for double posting this. I thought I'd make a new post as the one I had it in is quite off the original topic after 150 pages, and this being specific to orange based folks like me it wouldn't be of much use to many others.
(RESOLVED and happy as a pig in ****e for it!!)
Well as you said your phone is branded, therefore if you intend to run a non-orange RUU you will have to use a goldcard, then you can literally flash any ruu you want and you wont have any problems ... so for instance you could flash a WWE RUU and then start the rooting process again.
(Search the forum abit for how to create a goldcard)
The Orange RUU has never been released but I know someone who might be about to change all that...its a harsh lesson but it's another example of needing to research before jumping blindly into something they don't understand

Not as harsh a reply as my bear head thought it was when i first read it. Lol. Only just awake. 7 hours sleep is very refreshing. I'll post back when I sort it out.
Thanks RaymondErasmus and EddyOS.
Out of curiousity EddyOS, who could change that? And is it already available or a work in progress? I'm going to go down the goldcard route regardless as I don't want to be staring at Oranges bloaty demo and charged apps all the time, but somebody migght find it useful yet.

Ok, so I took it a bit easier today. Slept well and nursed my flu ridden fiancee, but pottered away over the day at goldcard etc. So from what i've been able to gather so far is that on orange the only thing I can really start with is an early version of the standard sense ROM, anything with 1.15 on it because anything later causes major hassle with the radio bit.
I've searched around and again Bubach28 has had the same issue so her entries have helped alot. Problem is now I can't get a decent .zip with an early ROM on it. Bubach28 used one off shipped-roms .com but the only one I'm able to download is a much later release from early november, and even when I do try and flash it as the PB99IMG.zip it comes back with the error...
CID incorrect!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No
... and every other one wont complete the download. They all time out or freeze. It's probably my internet connection but anyway. Does anyone have any files that are stable and useable? The CID error made me think I'd messed up the goldcard bit but I redid it a few times and on a few different cards, including the one that came in the Desire (which most people said was the only one that worked for them, although i read other posts that said that micro sdhc didn't work at all so that was confusing too as the one you get is a samsung 4gb micro sdhc) and besides based on the tutorial on the unlockr it should be fine.
So anyway, does anybody have a torrent or an upload on rapidshare of something like PB99IMG_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.0
6.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.zip or something earlier? Should I be using a specific md5 checksum for downloading these .zip files? Or equally is there anyway to run the RUU.exe whilst limited to bootloader and recovery? I've tried a few different ways and searched a fair bit for solutions but I can't quite find the answer.
Idea? I'm sorry if the answer is staring me in the face or if I've missed that one thread in my flicking between them too quickly.
Ive recently flashed the following WWE RUU successfully.
This was done after the latest Orange OTA upset my rooted phone.
Run the RUU with the phone in the fastboot menu.

Enter fastboot in hboot ... the computer should be able to pick up the device and then you will be able to run the normal RUU.exe or you could do the PB99IMG flash method. It doesnt really matter ... use the method that you feel more comfortable with!
As far as trying to go as far back as 1.21 ... this isnt really necessary and might even cause problems ... you can load the latest WWE 2.29 ... As a RUU flashes Radio, Kernal everything. (Seeing as you say you have a working goldcard i see no real reason why you cant do this )
Ta-da!
Right, so I'm all done and dusted and very happy.
I honestly couldn't tell you where I went wrong so many times with the gold card business but here's how I did it in the end.
After trying the unlockr method and various others (all using the Android SDK) I found a very useful program called GoldCardTool (find it at hxxp://android.modaco.com/content/software/308798/pc-application-goldcardtool/)
Tried with a 2gb sandisk but couldn't get it going, so like many people have said I just went for the stock samsung 4gb sdhc that came with the phone, and it worked first time. I opted for the PB99IMG.zip (I can't for the life of me remember where I got the .zip and it's renamed now but the .txt file tells me it's a 2.29.405.2 rom) method as opposed to running the RUU.exe as I had been having trouble with that before it ever got to a point where it mattered if my goldcard was done right or not.
Also, anyone worrying about Orange radio bit making your phone lock, i've not had any problems yet, so as RaymondErasmus said, just go for the latest one.
Very happy to be free of all the orange bloatware.
Thanks to RaymondErasmus, EddyOS and mikep99. Legends!
Excellent. Make sure you keep hold of the PB99.img file for in the future. You never know when it might come in handy.

Hi, and thanks in advance for anyone who can help.
I have a desire hd phone, witch I love anyways I had it rooted a few months ago by a local phone shop, but I didn’t really see the benefit from it, in fact it caused problems so I performed a full factory reset within a few days, and thought that was the end of it.
Anyways my phone received the option to update to the 2.3 gingerbread on Monday, it downloads fine, and then when the install starts it freezes at about 20% of the way thorough.
I have contacted HTC several times about it, they say the phone will not update if it’s been rooted and I have to send it back to them to have it re-flashed, one person said it would cost £30, another said £200 so I would rather not send it to them. the last guy I spoke to was very helpful, he said it was possible for me to reflash the phone to its original ''shipped'' state, and if I joined a help forum I could possibly get some help, but he was unable to advise me on this., so here I am!!!
I received the phone new in January and it has had no updates until the one on Moday, and it was rooted using visionary a few months ago, I have performed several factory restores since then.
Current software is:
android version 2.2
baseband version 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_m
build number 1.37.771.3 CL290190

im in the uk, and on the 3 network
Many thanks,

Hey dude, this link should help. I'm currently downloading it so that I can help you further when you get it also.
I would think twice about reverting everything back to stock though. You are now in the right place, the shop you went to, to get your phone rooted was the wrong place! We are a friendly bunch for the most part so do some reading in the desire HD general section and you'll find some nice ROMs that are close to stock firmware but perform better. If they're not for you then feel free to flash the official ROM from your provider that I have linked to above.
Oh yeah, Welcome to XDA!
Thanks for that, How do i go about installing it, and will it completely revert the phone back to its original state so i can use the ota update and get the 2.3 gingerbread?
And thanks again for your help
Damnit, what I've linked to is actually someones backup of a stock 3 ROM so it won't be quite back to factory fresh. Let me do some digging, I'll be back.
EDIT: What exactly did the shop do, other than use visionary? You could try AMT tools from here and query the device info, that should at least let us know what they have and haven't done to the phone. I suspect that they have set a super CID hence why the update won't go through. Try AMT and report back.
Thankyou very much your help is appreciated.
Should i try the link you posted earlier??
Just use AMT tools that I linked to above in one of my edits and check the CID, If it is just the CID that has been altered, then you can use this tool to reflash a 3UK CID which is H3G__001
when i use AMT it says AMT is designed for use with Desire HD and Dsire z / G2 ONLY But i have a desire HD ????
Strange, is there an option to click OK or ignore?
EDIT: Weird, I just booted into windows and I get the same thing with AMT tools. Now I'm really confused. Try using the other tool that I linked to and see what that displays.
EDIT 2: Just had a thought. Pull your battery then put it back in. Hold 'down' on the volume rocker then press the power button. Your phone should start in the bootloader and we should be able to get some more info. Once you've done this, list everything that it says in the bootloader screen.
Sorry, my brain is a bit slow today for some reason.
Ok ill do that now, i have also just rooted my phone again using visionary (i followed the link in your earlier message. so its rooted again now. cant believe i paid £20-00 to have that done, it took me less than 5 minutes to do it

OK, so it would seem as though all they did was root it and leave most things intact, I think they must have changed your CID though probably using the jkoljo's radio S-OFF tool.
Run that tool and try to change your CID to whatever it was that I said before H3G__001 I think it was, or you could equally use that tool to get radio s-off super-CID and sim-unlock, then install ROM manager from the market, flash Clockwork Mod Recovery and then flash a custom ROM after making a backup of course.
The world is your lobster at this point and flashing new ROMs can be fun. I might have to re-flash my current ROM myself as I think I've screwed something up with it from messing around too much earlier today
i dont understand the open "Desire HD easy radio tool.exe'' where is that??
Please remember i am a complete noob when it comes to this, lol
i had to download the visionary app using my phone as my laptop kept saying it had a virus.
i have downloaded the premium rom manager app, can you recomend and good roms, or where i can get a list of them? also could you explain in noob terms how to change my phone so i can get the 2.3 update? the cid bit!!!
Thank you, you have been very helpfull.

I'm gonna point you to this thread as it has everything you could possibly want or need to know in it. There is a link there to a thread all about how to flash a ROM, what tools you need on your PC etc..
With regards to how to get 2.3 onto your phone pretty much every ROM you'll find in the DEV section is based on 2.3. That thread I've linked also has links to pretty much every ROM currently available for the DHD and everything is explained far better than I would be able to explain things.
The tool to get Super-CID, which really only helps when it comes to flashing Radio's (which is something I would avoid until you've found your feet a little, however it's worth doing now, as it is simple and relatively worry free) is at the bottom of this post.
Happy reading and just remember that as long as you read all the instructions for something before starting it and you feel comfortable with what the instructions are explaining, then you will succeed with your end goal.

I have downloaded this, but i have no idea how to use it! i extracted the files to my desktop, it has a few different applications in there, one says start here but when i open it a command prompt comes up on my pc screen, i dont know where to go from there

You should extract them into one folder, then from there you should be able to double click the only thing that looks like a program icon. If nothing is happening it would suggest that you need to update your .NET framework. Do that by running windows update or going here.
Honestly....... the best thing to do would be to go here and read the basic setup bit so that your PC is ready for everything, and then read the rest of that little guide and it should hold your hand through the whole process.
im going to attempt a custom rom form the link you gave me (everything desire hd) do you have any recomendations??
Cyanogenmod is interesting as it more like stock Android, MIUI is similar to iOS and then you have the sense ROMs with tweaks and whatnot. Have a look at the options available in the screenshots and see what you like the look of, it's a very subjective thing as some like one thing and others like something else.
the link you gave me for the rado code was missing the important bit!
i managed to find it somewhere else

have a look at the link you gave me, it is missing the main programme.
do you have to go through the root procedure every time you use the radio tool, or will it work every time after the phone is rooted. the reason i ask is that i just tried to do it and it said ''operation failed, probably connection'' ill try it again now

It usually fails the first time, I don't know why. After a reboot it worked for me, keep your phone screen on though as the package will request superuser permission.
That link is definitely not missing anything as I've downloaded and run it from that link several times, but maybe your download got corrupted.
Glad all seems well now anyway.
Hi Guys, I posted this in Android Software and Hacking General, but I didn't get a reply. Probably the wrong section!
my HTC Desire GSM is stuck in Fastboot and won't boot into the ROM. The background to this issue is that I installed S-Off and then ClockworkMod and flashed Cyogenmod 7 to see if it would fix a reboot issue on the phone. The damn thing just reboots itself when the CPU is used heavily...
Anywho, after realising that Cyogen wouldn't resolve the issue I flashed the standard Virgin UK rom back over it and upgraded to 2.22.351.2 via the system update feature. The problem was that ClockwordMod was still installed and I had to get rid of it to sent the phone off for repair to Virgin!
So I did further research and found that I could flash HBoot via the AlphaRev.nl downgrader tool. I downloaded it and popped it into the root of my SD card and it flashed the bootloader back to Hboot 0.80.0000. That should have been it, but all of the sudden the phone no longer boots into the Rom. All it does is to power on and then go into Fastboot. That's it! When I try putting the standard Virgin Rom back onto the SD it tries to load it and then says "Main Version is older!" "Update Fail!".
How do I get around this now? The phone doesn't boot, so I can't re-flash S-Off and start again, not am I able to run the stock Virgin Rom within Windows because it complains about the versions.
Is there any ways around this situation? I just want to get the phone back to stock so I can send it to Virgin and get it repaired.
P.S. I *have* used the search function and spent the last 4 hours testing various things but I'm now stuck.
Cheers Guys!
Mich
Well you obviously fckd up with the Downgrader, you should have run it first BEFORE RUU. Also did you flashed Stock Hboot prior to Downgrader? (if you used CM7 earlier)
I never played around with the hboot downgrading etc. so i wont be able to help you but im sure there is some workaround...
as your returning your phone anyway why don't you try the official HTC gingerbread update from the HTC developer site (sorry I don't have a link). It should return your phone to stock and when you get it back you need to use revolutionary to get s-off back. Also, there is a sticky from user bortac which has loads of help and trouble shooting advice.

Any advice that uses the 2.3.3 RUU to fix something is plain bad advice - it can just make your problem a LOT worse.
@OP Go onto my guide, look at RUU problems for help
What you need to do:
-Make a goldcard (there is a tutorial there)
-Flash the WWE RUU
Guys, upgrading to Gingerbread has actually brought the phone back from the dead! =) And I can now return it to Virgin to get it repaired properly. The symptoms are that while the phone is plugged in and charging, and I'm doing stuff (taxing the CPU), the phone will eventually simply rebooting itself. Just *BANG*! And it's gone. And once it starts it's a bit of a run-away thing and just keeps on doing it until you leave the phone alone for a bit. Virgin had a look at it and simply re-flashed it, thinking that they could away with that. Typical, overworked, non-creative call centre workers..... I'm well pissed off with them!
Gonna send it back next week and force them to swap the motherboard or something, cause this is a serious fault with the phone.
Hello everyone, I'm running into a bit of a problem here with my sister's HTC EVO 4G.
You see her phone is a remanufactured replacement model from Sprint, and naturally it has a few minor problems with it. She wasn't thrilled with the battery life, so I rooted and flashed CM7.1 on her phone. She liked the rom and liked the extra battery life after I did some tweaking. Two Months later, for some odd reason, her phone will not connect to the data network at all. I flashed CM 7.2, same problem. Contacted sprint, where they refreshed the signal to the phone, no luck. So I concluded that it was a hardware error. Problem is, Sprint won't work on the phone without the Stock Sense Rom installed. I thought: "No big deal, I'll just flash it back to the stock sense rom" right? WRONG.
Never have I ever been so enraged by a cellphone. No matter what I do, no matter what I try, this phone absolutely REFUSES to go back to the stock rom. I've tried flashing several PC36IMG.zip files from the sdcard in HBOOT, and I have also tried several RUU updates from my PC while having the phone in Fastboot USB mode.
Quick Info:
Phone: HTC EVO 4G
Baseband: 2.15.00.12.19
HBOOT: 2.18.0001
Bootloader = Unlocked
Security = ON (S-ON)
Trying to flash PC36IMG.zip from HBOOT results in the phone loading the zip (with the little vertical progress bar on the side) and after loading completely, it just goes on it's merry way, checking for any other zip files and then HBOOT loads normally.
Running the RUU .exe files on my computer goes smoothly right up until somewhere in the update progress I get Error 155 (Unknown Error).
Now, it's my understanding that I don't need S-OFF to go back to the stock Sense rom, but I figured I should try to get S-OFF anyways. So I downloaded unrevoked and try to apply it from CWM, and it fails stating that it's not compatible with my radio version. Funny thing is, in all the radio lists for the HTC EVO 4G, I don't see 2.15.00.12.19 anywhere. In fact, 2.15.00.08.08 seems to be the newest one, unless I'm reading the lists wrong.
Either way I'm completely stuck here, and now I have a whining teenage sister screaming at me because she doesn't have a phone on a friday night. Go Figure.. Please guys, I know I'm a noobie here, but do me a solid. Please help me out, I'm stuck, frustrated, and I'm getting to the point where it's time to crack open a beer or 3 and say "f**k it".
Thanks in advance,
Alcolawl

Does it matter which RUU version I download? (I've been extracting the rom.zips from the RUU's temporary files). I have the most current one on my computer named: "RUU_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.67.651.3_Radio_2.15.00.12.19_NV_2.33_release_234563_signed". I usually take the Rom from that, rename it PC36IMG.zip, place it on a freshly formatted sdcard, and reboot into bootloader and hope for the best.
well, if you want the bootloader to be returned to factory stock settings then you can follow the guide below, BUT if you just want to UN ROOT, just copy a stock rom like the one you named, and flash it thru RECOVERY menu (install zip from sd card), dont install it from the bootloader (white screen)

Sounds easy enough. While messing around and waiting for Dominos to arrive, I decided to flash MikG (first time doing so, so I wasn't sure what to expect). Lo and Behold, I updated the PRL and Data Profile, and her Data works again. She also likes how Sense looks more so than CM7. Aesthetics > Functionality in her book I guess. If it comes down to having to bring the phone to the Sprint store, I'll try flashing the image through Recovery instead of Hboot.
Thanks for the help man, really appreciate it.
