Mine was able to do it.....
I got mine up and running no problem.... only thing is now I dont need the voicemail Icon on the home screen anymore because it sends text notifications now
great service, but the voicemail to text needs some work yet I cant complain. works fine for me
Hey y'all so I really recommend checking out youmail, it's a voicemail client for your phone. And once you've checked it out, tell me if you're having the same problem i am. When I go to start > settings > phone > call options: and then try to change the voicemail default number (the number that my phone calls when I press and hold "1") I keep getting an error message saying that the settings could not be saved. However, on tmobile's end, they see the change, but still my phone just calls the regular voicemail number when I press and hold "1"... thoughts? Is there a registry hack somewhere just to make my phone call the correct number when I hold 1?
Thanks!

I wonder if you have to have your device "unlocked". I have changed my voicemail number to my main answering services vm and it works fine.
hmm
Well, I'm fairly certain that my phone is unlocked because I've modded it ALOT. Unless you mean SIM unlocked, in which case I don't think that it is.

I just signed up for YouMail a couple of days ago. Lovin' it. What I did was change my Speed Dial #5 to the YouMail voicemail number. My Speed Dial #1 is still for T-Mobile voicemail. After doing this, my calls get routed to my new YouMail number and not the T-Mo number anymore. It works pretty well for me. When I check the voicemails on the old T-Mo number, it only plays the old messages left before switching to YouMail.
Try using another Speed Dial number besides the #1. I think that one isn't changeable.
what does youmail offer that tmo voice mail doesnt?

YouMail allows you to set custom voicemails for multiple callers. It also allows you to use "Ditch Mail" for telemarketers, blocked callers, and unknown callers. Ditch Mail gives the caller a generic message stating that you aren't receiving calls from blocked or unknown callers and to try again from an unblocked number. Then (here's the clincher) it hangs up. You can also view and listen to voicemails via email. It's great.
Ive had it for a week, and love it! My friends get the silly VM messages... all else get the SMART VM where it states the name of the caller and says Im not available...
great stuff
not a bad solution but...
while changing my shortcut number five to the youmail number will be a nice shortcut to it, does that mean that if i use youmail, i'll neve get a "new voicemail" notification again? it's gonna use up a lot of texts if every vmail i get has to be announced via text message.
you can set it to only send you emails... I have a 300 txt msg plan... and didnt want to eat them up with youmail messages. SO, I set it accordingly.
hmm..
I totally understand that it is possible to do that, and if it comes down to it, I'm fine with that, however, I'd love it if youmail was more fully integrated with my phone. Ergo, if I could change the number for the voicemail system (which youmail says that you can) and receive vmail notifications, it'd be perfect. Does no one in this quite impressive community know where the registry edit would be to change that number? Thanks for all the help!
patiently awaits a response to the previous question.
Youmail offers the chance to have custom voicemail messages to specific callers...one for your love, one for your mom, one for your boss, etc... it will also transcribe voicemail messages and either txt them or email them to you! lots of other finer points... but thats a good overview

Is your service prepaid? If so, prepaid T-Mobile voicemail #s cannot be changed.
contracted
Nope,
I have a monthly plan, and even when I called the guys at tmo about this issue, they said that they can see my trying to change the number, and that it should be changing on my phone. I just need to find out where in the registry that phone finds that vmail number, and to change it. Thoughts?
Wow lol
I can't believe noone responded to you, bro. It's pretty easy. Do the following:
1) Settings
2) Phone
3) Call options
In there you will see Voice mail number, change it to youmail's #.
On the other hand, this service looks pretty promising. Thanks to you guys, I now know about it. I really hope it works in Canada too.
Will try right now
EDIT: Great, It doesn't work in Canada That sucks...Oh Well...One day I guess.
where?
sounds very impressive could someone provide a download link to this app?
The multiple voicemail responses and the voice to text of Youmail sound interesting and I will check it out after this post. Youmail looks better, just wish it had mobile call screening.
I use Callwave free version because it has mobile call screening which allows me to actually listen to the person leave a message in realtime and answer it or ignore it with one button.

never mind ive googled it thanks (GOD BLESS GOOGLE!)
After flipping between ROMS, I find my VVM is no longer working, nothing goes to my VVM. Even when I get voicemails, they do not show up in that app.
I did do something once when using CM6, I got a text message from that 9016 and called the number it said to retrieve it. Ever since my VVM has not been working. I am currently running Baked. Any suggestions?
I have the same problem on the Baked 1.5 rom. It tells me that I have a voicemail, but is unable to retrieve.
If it were me, I'd flash a stock rooted rom. See if voicemail works with that. If it doesn't, call customer service and tell them you are having problems with visual voice mail retrieval and if they would be so kind as to give your voice mail a full reset on their side.

Here's a few I googled and some possible fixes.
Oh, this is for the text from 9016 snafu. I don't know if it will help you.
Make sure under Call / Voicemail Settings that it displays your phone number. Otherwise I would wipe and reflash.

Lol. You will keep getting that txt. I'm not going to flame you but if you would of searched the forum you would of seen my post on vvm from yesterday or used the search feature I'm sure it would of popped up with vvm.
Anyways use the app private conversation from the market. Has a blacklist. Can do just SMS, phone call, and both SMS and phone call from a number. This is what I used.
Now go to settings and call setting, voicemail and make sure your phone number is in there if not change it. Mine was *86 so I had to change the number to mine. There ya go. Please do a little effort on searching. I use the xda app and the search always brings up roms and themes most of the time instead of what I'm looking for but I still try first and go to the forums and go through a big list.
Hope this helps.

You the man! This was the problem (for me at least). It had the option of using "carrier" or "google voice" for voicemail and neither one was checked. I'm assuming that's because the data wipe and installation of a new rom. I checked carrier and tested it out. It's now good to go.
Thanks!
Got it working =]
@martyzidek: I did search first, but I was probably overly specific and got no results from my search =[
@herbthehammer: I did just that, installed a plain rooted 2.2, and for good measure I then ran a Master Reset (##786#) since I already knew my code from trying to update the PRI. I double checked that my voicemail # was showing up correctly (thanks @dglowe343), then had my girlfriend call and leave a message. I then received 6 voicemails all at once: the one that my girlfriend just left and the 5 others that didn't show up. =]
I've been out of the loop lately and just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.
Thanks.

yes,
there is the leaked official rom....

Gingerbread + 4g + AOSP = CM7
Awesome, thank you both!
I can't deal with the VM issues on CM7. Otherwise, it is awesome. But the text each time you get a voicemail is ridiculous.
Update to using Google Voice... No more VVM issues with CM7, and works like a charm.

But why? Sounds like there's another option besides switching my phone number.
Besides, I can never get used to the "press 1 to talk prompt." I'm always like, hello? ... press 1 ... hello?

Well for one, you do not have to change your number anymore... Sprint has integrate with GV where your Sprint number is your GV number...
Second, yeah that is getting a bit annoying. I am hoping they fix that or provide a way to turn it off...

You, sir, just blew my mind. I am potentially very happy about this.
Potentially because I apparently do not have the capability yet. I don't have the "enable google voice on your sprint mobile phone" link next to my number.
grrr...

That is still in the testing phase, you won't be able to unless you sign up for testing (not sure if that is still open) or until they release it.

Dammit I want it now, though.
Why would switching to gv for voice mail change your number? I have gv as my voice mail and I don't need to change my number. Whenever people call my sprint number and I don't pick up it just goes to gv voicemail.
Also the press 1 to talk prompt can be changed in gov setting via computer not android app. If you log in to gv on your computer you can change the settings.

+1 I like the Google Voice MUCH better than Sprint VVM.....and the text translations are free (though not all that accurate at times). Just alot more options than VVM.
im using youmail for visual voice mail on CM7, works like a charm, and i dont get those text messages from 9019 or whatever number it was, i can't remember if i blocked them with my messaging app, but i think just fiddling with some settings makes it go away, after my most recent flash a few days ago the text messages never showed up,
Even if you have a gv number, it's not like you have to change your number. Dialing your sprint number still gets people to your gv voicemail.
Plus, like said above, if you're getting texts, just block them. Most of the GB AOSP ROMs (if not all) have 4g now.
***** FIXED ***** CALLED AT&T TO RESET VOICEMAIL ***** PLEASE REMOVE THREAD *****
I am using a stock GSM GNex, unrooted, and I noticed, when I receive calls, the caller does not go to voicemail and when I attempt to check voicemail, I am told that I do not have a voicemail box. This is a new problem, because before, I had voicemail and I set it up using AT&T. When I long press the number "1" on the dial pad I get a recording that says to enter the phone number of the party you are trying to reach. I enter my phone number and it says that the number is not listed. I can receive and make calls to anyone no problem, but voicemail all of a sudden stopped working. I went into the phone settings and checked the phone number listed as my voicemail number, it is not the same as my regular phone number, so I changed it to my number and I was getting a busy signal when I tried to check my voicemail after that. Any ideas??? I don't think calling AT&T will do me any good as they think I am using a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. Please help, I need to get voicemails if I don't get to the phone in time!!
Thanks
I'm not sure how to fix your problem but, have you tried google voice as your voicemail client? Maybe you can use that instead.
To be honest I want to fix the issue and I don't want to use Google Voice. When I did a search before posting this I read a lot of people were using that service, but I want to get the real problem fixed. Thanks though.
Does anyone think the problem could be because I have a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket as my main phone on my plan, and that phone uses visual voicemail? And somehow now the phone won't activate voicemail because of that? When I dial my number and call myself, I get a busy tone.
1) Your VM number is either incorrectly programmed into the phone, or whoever set up your account didn't provision you with the VM feature. Call your carrier, they can verify with you whether your phone is correct or it's their system. No one on XDA can't help you with a shortcut.
2) Get Google Voice. Carrier VM systems are utter crap by comparison. That is the "real" solution to your "real problem".
The voicemail number is the same as it was when I set it up the first time. BTW, using Google Voice is not the "real" solution to my "real problem". If you don't know the answer to the question or you think no one else here will, you don't have to emphasize your love of Google Voice, I just don't want to use it so I am trying to figure out how to fix it. Thank you.
Oh, and maybe you should change your user name if you hate AT&T so much.
