Hi, can anyone please tell me how usable the sceen on the defy is in normal sun light, direct sun light and maybe other conditions?
I use GPS while in a open top boat and my omnia I8000 AMOLED is so bad, i have to block the sun with my hands and what ever i can use.
Video or pictures would be nice.
Its good. Lcd is better in sunlight than amoled. Neither are as good as super amoled which would be first pick if it's your main priority.
Id love to take photo but haven't seen much sun in NY as of late lol

thanks mate. that sounds good - I just need to be able to read text and stuff
Morning all, I received my nexus today and wow its fantastic. After getting setup and yada yada I noticed that when I go to take a picture in the dark or view a black image I get a strange black line about 1inch down from the top of the screen all the way across and 1inch Inc vertically inwards from the right side of the screen all the way down. I'm not too sure how to take a screen shot to show you guys/gals. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the pen tile or I've got a dodgy handset. Apart from that the phone is great.
Thanks Nathan

To take a screenshot, hold down the Power button and the volume-down button at the same time.
If you take the screenshot and look at it on another phone/computer and the line isn't there, it's in the screen. Weird that it would only show up when taking a picture or looking at a black image...?
same problem that tmo galaxy s2 had i guess?
i returned my tmo gs2 because of the vertical line problem.
GN has the same problem?

I have taken a screenshot of a pure black image off a screen test app. I also took a picture covering the camera and both are identical. I will attach the images below. Please note you need superman vision to be able to see it. Best viewed in a dark room or squint.

a screenshot won't show any screen defect, you have to take a picture of the screen with another camera
I have the same problem and started a thread about it. I'd wait a week and then return it for an exchange when there is more stock.

can you explain us better what this problem is please?
is it a problem of the screen or a software one?
Does it do this with every picture? I have seen crap digital cameras do that when bright light relects off of the sun.
I have tried to take a picture of the black screen with my gs2 but it won't pick it up at all. Its worse than I thought after i examined it. Its like scattered dots across the majority of the screen. Also when the brightness is set lower the screen goes purple. No true blacks
Edit: Im comparing the xda app from my gs2 and the whites are more cream. I Must have a bad handset as there is no way this is normal.

I don't know what to say to the sun comment as I live in England ;-)
Its only on a black image I could live with it but after a lot of trouble with my GS2 I'm not letting Samsung win the battle this time. Back to P4U I go.
Can somebody please do me a huge favour and check their nexus for the same fault. I'm pretty sure its not software issue but saves a trip if it is.
Cheers

The galaxy note has the same problem. I'm on my phone so just search in the note general. Should find it quickly.

Lmao. You cant make a story like this up when you tell somebody.

I have a similar issue
This could be just me, or everyone. Depends on how reliable Samsung has been able to manufacture their handsets.
I took pictures of my Galaxy Nexus in a dark room with my Nikon DSLR.

Had my galaxy Nexus just over a week now and I got no issues with black lines or the camera....
i've had my nexus for just under a week and i've noticed the black lines as well. if i lower the brightness of the screen the black lines are more visiable and especially against lighter backgrounds. i've only found one article on the web that has highlighted this problem too, but would be interested to see if anyone else is having the same problem
Let's post here your (maybe best) photo shots taken with Galaxy Nexus.
Just to share your experience with this 5MP camera, and let everybody make an idea on the quality of the NExus camera.
Thanks in advance to everyone!
Nobody?
Here's a quick one I've just taken.
Only had the phone 48 hours so far and not had much chance to take pictures outside with so little daylight hours.
Good, thank you!
Here is one, I will sent some more later!

Thanks.

looks a bit grainy in the corner; still miles ahead of my Atrix camera though
my SGS1's camera was so much better than my Atrix
I get the feeling this camera is just really random, some pics i've seen look truly fantastic, and some are just...whut..?! Hope a software patch can make it more consistent.

same here; like the ones on google+ were really nice
yet some with good lighting i've seen seemed below average.
anyhow; its bound it be an improvement over my craptastic Atrix camera
I love Galaxy Nexus camera. It is super-fast and with the option to tweak the photos on the phone before sharing then with your friend, it works absolutely brilliantly.
The purpose of a camera phone is to be social and on-the-go. You don't go photographing nature with a camera phone. You take pictures of things you happen to witness or find interesting. You take pictures of friends or some food you like. You can easily edit it and share with friends.
The camera of Galaxy Nexus serves those needs better than some 8MP camera would. It is wickedly fast, I can take multiple photos while on the go of a subject and then pick out the one I liked the most.
This photo I took of two dogs that were difficult to take a picture of. The sun had just set, so the forest was already getting dark. I entirely forgot about selecting a proper focus point, but that did not matter. I tweaked the picture a little on the phone, the contrast and colors, added soft vignette and shared it. People loved it.

The purpose of a camera phone is to take pictures of things you cannot put into words and share them. For that purpose I have found Galaxy Nexus camera phone to be perfect.
I remember the camera being rubbish on the SGS2 initially also, and was improved significantly over time with firmware updates. I really hope its the same on this, as the camera is a a little hit and miss for my liking

Same here. I came in here with the express purpose of researching the camera. Side by side shots with other phones show a lot of fuzzy and blurry photos. Hopefully that gets fixed with a firmware update....if it does that will eliminate my last concern with the Nexus.
I think people have hit the nail on the head with the "variable" comments.
Sometimes the pictures are really good - other times not so good. Not finding a pattern as to why yet though!
Hi,
Ive seen a few other posts like this and was curious , at the moment i cant use auto brightness becouse if i do this transparant line becomes quite easy to see.
However if i set brightness to 60% i dont see this line. However i do still see it on grey backgrounds and if i have the browser open and pull taskbar down its still quite obvious.
Im not to sure wether i should bother swapping this phone as last month i saw around 5 / 6 sIIs with the same issues and even blobs. So im thinking with 1 line im not doing 2 bad.
If people think its worth swapping i might just do that as ive spoken to shop and they are fine with it. However i dont want to get caught swapping phones if this is part of how amoled works or traits of useing amoled as i could end up with one thats worse.
Any opinions views well appreciated i can post a pic if needed but im guessing most people that post here will know what im talking about
One thing id like to add is that this phone is simply awesome , ive owned sII and sensation xe and ended up returning them but i really do like this phone ics is well nice
thought i would update this thread with pictures view appreciated thanks.
Sorry, but this is how aMOLED works. At lower brightness levels, it cannot keep every pixel in check. This is especially true when they've crammed 1280*720 pixels on a 4.65'' screen. If it is not a hassle for you to swap (i.e. you bought it at a brick and mortar store) you could swap it out. You might get one slightly better, or slightly worse. I had a couple of lines on mine, but I didn't mind it. The price really through me out though...
It's just what you have to deal with to get the best blacks...
fixed mine
Hi,
I had the same issue and ran an app from the market called Dead Pixel Test... I left it on Yellow colour for a few seconds then alternated to other colours... had to do this for like an hour before the white line was completely gone! Now been a week and the line didn't come back so I'm happy that a simple software like this was able to fix it!
Try it out...

How is a dead pixel tester app supposed to fix your phone?
Break in the pixels possibly? Amoled pixels burn at different rates.

I also have the transparent line
I had the transparent line on the screen too. It was clearly visible on light & grey backgrounds such as when opening a new tab in the browser and loading the Android Market.
This coupled with a yellow tint to the screen on white images, the average battery life (for me at least) and the volume bug which took a while to get fixed were enough reasons for me to return the phone and continue using my S2.
I definitely will buy the Galaxy Nexus again though. I liked the hardware and the screen clarity was great and stock ICS is superb. It was just a shame about the warm colours and transparent lines. Hopefully these get fixed in the near future via new production batches or a software fix. By then maybe an extended battery will be out too.
just to update this thread swapped the phone and my new one has no transparant line , however my new one does have some crazy banding which can be viewed here :-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382073
mad how different 2 screens can be again will be retuning , this phone is awesome but seems to be let down my samsungs build quality :/
Just to clarify a point that keeps being made. This is how SOME AMOLED screens are, not all.
I have a perfect screen as do many others, if it bothers you, exhchange it for a new one as it is possible to get one without defect.
Just kind of annoying how comments are made that make a blanket statement about all screens, when it really isn't. Sure it might be a typical problem with AMOLED, but it's not how they work and certinaly not a problem with all to have lines down and across them.
Hello Guys and Gals,
I have been an HTC User for a good while now and I finally bought a Samsung and need help with it. So main reason I bought this phone is for is the camera, now I only had it for 1 day and I only took pictures in my house but the pictures have some "yellowness" to them when compared to my M7. I shot all the photos with HDR off, any adjustments I can make to clear this?
Next question I have is the slower transitions, I already went into developer options and drop the animation duration to .5 secs like it is on my M7 but it still "feels" laggy, is this the screen res being too high causing this or can I root this to get away from that?
Lastly, any thin ( this is coming from a guy who never puts a case on his phone) case for this phone, the glass is really scaring me and since it is leased it is more daunting.
Thanks everybody, love the big screen and cant wait to use it for 2 years!

The first thing I did was download Nova launcher. With it running and the animation durations set to 0.5x, everything is awesomely smooth. I never used the touchwiz launcher, so maybe that's the cause of lagginess?
I haven't noticed any yellowness in my photos so I'm not sure there. I have noticed that the "basic" screen coloring profile was the most accurate, where the other modes are super saturated.
Coming from HTC also...I'm missing Blinkfeed. Do you guys know of any apps that will stream all of my social networking accounts in one kinda like Blinkfeed?
The spigen neo hybrid cases are great cases, they are thin and look great. I would advise on getting a tempered gl;ass screen protector. better safe than sorry.
Thanks for responses, i have dodol launcher installed already but switching between app is still stuttering. Ill check the photo options and i got that case.

I've been with HTC and kept up with every model from Touch to M8. There isn't anything laggy. I did read a thread earlier concerning a memory leak if too many apps are open, but just close all until the fix comes which T Mobile apparently is or has received already. Ohh and turn off the Samsung stuff if you don't use it.
As far as the cases go I got a JETech clear rubber case. Looks pretty good, thin and doesnt take anything away from the look of the phone
Update: I already broke the screen on the phone :/ with a case on, I guess aluminum is stronger than this Gorilla Glass BS. Anyways, the only improvement in lag is if I download a ram/cache cleaner app and clear is like once a week, any permanent fix to this?
Guess I'll just take the case off and use the phone naked now. haha
HTC convert also, seems pretty dead in here compared to the HTC forums. Just couldn't pull the trigger on the M9 when the S6 was the better phone. HTC Blinkfeed can be done, and I am running it just fine on my S6 see this link, http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/htc-blinkfeed-plugins-devices-08-03-2015-t3049438

what effect does it show on battery? I really miss Blinkfeed from my M8 days, I might have to try this! :good: do you need just the Blinkfeed download? or do you also have to DL all the other sense stuff?
haven't noticed much difference with the battery, but phone is less than a week old so still feeling out the battery performance. I loaded all of the files for version 7 listed in the OP and a few of the plugins, twitter , google, and Instagram.
