The Telus version was released today. If anyone gets one or tries it out in store, could you report the software/bootloader/etc version information to this thread? Is it the rootable build or the one that needs to be downgraded?
And second - if it's the one that needs to be downgraded - is there any way whatsoever to take a nandroid backup of the stock ROM before proceeding to flash a downgrade? Because I'm pretty sure there won't be a stock firmware available for months. The Telus (non-HD) Desire didn't have a RUU available until Froyo came out.

Damn, so I guess that's not the version that can get easy S-OFF?
Would there be any conceivable way to nandroid backup this ROM before downgrading?
Let us know how your hacking goes on this phone.
Nandroid is not possible before downgrading, and that can be rooted most likely, you can try my downgrade guide.

Yeah, I have big plans to give you method a shot after work tonight.
Will report back
Okay so if nandroid is out of the question... perhaps you should at least take a backup of the directory /system/app which you should be able to do without root.
Would it be possible with the temp root before downgrading, to dump as many partitions to SD as possible? Would this be any help in getting the phone reverted later on to approximately stock?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
It might be possible to dd the **** out of partitions while doing downgrade, because psneuter gives root shell. If you know dd, feel free to try it! Then a good ROM cook can turn it into a flashable ROM. Take at least the system partition.

Sure, I'm no expert but the partition table is listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944841
So I think it'd be something like:
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p25 of=/sdcard/extracted_system.img
et cetera, for as many partitions as necessary.
Are the .img files produced by this method going to be in the same format as those used in a nandroid backup? One would have to create a proper checksum file I think, in order for Clockwork to be happy about restoring.
But yeah if we get a dump of a stock Telus Desire to the extent possible, then it could allow a restore image to be made.
Obviously you wouldn't be able to restore system.img while the phone is booted up though. Does dd work over ADB in custom recovery?
I have one running cm7 right now, the only problem is that I don't seem to have sound.

Did you have sound in the downgraded ROM prior to CM7?
Did you do a full wipe before flashing CM7?
You might want to try taking a nandroid backup and then trying other ROMs instead such as generic unbranded or CM6.1.3, just to see if the sound issue is specific to your phone or to CM7.
Ya i tried other roms but didn't work. I know I had sound on stock but not sure about after downgrading. I got my phone replace and don't really wanna kill anotherone.
One stupid question. Can I put a different Sim card in the Telus Desire HD out of the box? I want to buy one directly from the Telus website, and I won't be using int in Canada, so do I need to activate it or something before I can use it with a different type of sim card?
It's amazing how hard it is to get a new phone with the right 3G bands!! In my country the only 3G bands available are 850/1900, just like AT&T, so the Desire HD will be the next best thing after the Nexus One.
Thanks for your help.
K so you've rooted the new telus desire hd and you have no sound? Which instructions dido you use? Do I have to downgrade first? Just got the telus hd and want to root asap
Side note, are there unlock codes for this phone yet?
Ok, first you have to downgrade
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
Then you have to s-off to get permaroot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
Then download clockworkmod from market and flash the recovery.
And keep an eye on the sound at every step.

Just my experience. This morning.
I'm getting a Telus Desire HD next week (upgrading from Desire) and I was wondering if I should switch from Rogers to Telus, or unlock it and stick with Rogers. I'm in downtown Toronto, ON.
There's no real difference in the plans, so I was wondering what oppinions were on Telus' service.
This was just posted from another thread.

It looks to be a rooted telus dhd rom. let me know how it goes.

Hi all,
So I'm on O2 UK with a branded (and I assume locked) Desire.
HBOOT: 0.80
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Rom version: 1.20.207.3
Bottom line is, I want to root before O2 push out their 2.2 update which will inevitably increase my HBOOT version. I'm a actually a software developer by trade, but I'm scared and want to take this whole rooting process slowly.
I've already created a goldcard but I've also set up my PC ready for the Unrevoked method, so I'll probably end up using that. So my main question is:
- Once I've rooted with unrevoked, do I HAVE to install a custom ROM that very minute or can I simply reboot my phone and use the stock ROM until I feel I'm ready to reflash?
Thank you! (my first post, be gentle please!)
-L
... delete
Good evening lodger. I was in the same place s you, o2, new desire and first time boot.
I used the unrevoked method, it took 5 mins and have not needed a gold card.
I have flashed another ROM straight away however my phone re booted in to the original Rom and I could continue to use it with the original o2 Rom but just with root access.
Hope this is of some help.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Thank you for the quick replies!
So please correct me if my understanding is wrong, I run the unrevoked process and I get a new recovery rom that lets me perform nandroid backups and flash custom roms but nothing more (yet)?
So if I were to just take a nandroid backup at this point and boot the phone normally, I would see no difference until I actually flashed a custom rom with root access?
I'm actually unsure as to whether the phone is actually locked as I've been with O2 for a looooong time and never had a locked phone from them and unfortunately I don't have another sim card to try in it. The only branding is the O2 boot screen, nothing else. So if anyone could confirm the thing about needing an unlock code that would be great.
Sorry for all of the questions, I'd just like to understand the process a little better before applying it to my pride and joy

As of unrevoked version 3.0 it will root your desire and install a custom recovery.
So you'll have a stock Rom that's rooted, then you can nandroid backup and install a custom Rom when ever you want.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I can confirm the first reply you got was wrong. Unrevoked is the easiest and best method to use. It WILL root your phone as well as install a custom recovery. You can then continue to use the stock rom with the benefits of root.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
You won't require an unlock code for an o2 branded phone.
O2 phones are normally locked, but iirc you can use Orange sim cards in there too.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
The only people who need an unlock code are Orange users.
As for unrEVOked, it will give you root. The handset will be perfectly usable as soon as unrEVOked is finished. You can then choose to stay as you are or play with all the roms in the dev forum.
Personally I'd jump straight into the dev section and download like a geek on speed
Thank you everyone. You've helped clarify thing no-end and given me the confidence to go ahead and join you all in root land Ok, one last round of questions:
So once I'm rooted, I can jump straight onto the market and download titanium backup and get all my stuff backed up, then I'm pretty much good to go right? (I'll feel a LOT happier once I have a backup!)
Any recommendations as to which rom I should go with first? There are a LOT out there and as a newbie to all of this, sifting through them is a tad daunting.
What's the deal with radio updates? Is there anything I should be aware of when applying them? Should they be applied first, before the OS rom or the other way around?
Having already created a goldcard, is it worth hanging onto it? I hear they do come in handy.
Again, sorry for all the questions but I figure it's best to ask them now rather than get stuck further down the line.
Thanks again
-L
Update: I'm rooted! nandroid backup is running now! Phew!
Thank you again everyone!
-L
It depends what your looking for in a rom. If you want froyo with sense you could try ones by pays, or the leedroid one. If you want plain android, I'd go for defrost by richard trip, or opendesire by adamg.
You will need the latest radio for the new froyo roms for stability and to ensure no echo during calls. The radio is the baseband that you see listed in about phone. It will also increase your wifi and mobile network strength.
When flashing the radio your phone will reboot twice. It is extremely important that you do not interrupt the flashing process and if it looks like it's frozen or whatever, just leave it, and be patient. The radio flash is perfectly safe, but if you do interrupt it you will have an unrecoverable brick!
Titanium will work as soon as you have root, I'd get the paid version if you have a lot of apps, as the free version requires you to confirm each app install one by one, paid version is fully automatic.
Finally, if you want to put your apps to sd card, then the froyo one is rubbish! Most if not all the custom roms use oldschool a2sd which is far better but requires an ext3 partition to be made on your card. To make the ext3 partition use either the custom recovery you have from unrEVOked or download rom manager from the market. The process of creating the partition will ddelete your sd card though so take a backup if needed.
Hope this helps you a bit, and good luck. Once you have tried a few roms you will love it

This is wrong, Orange users must use a compatable radio meaning there's no need to unlock.
As for you, if your phone is locked then you will need to flash a compatable radio like orange users. I'm not sure which radio versions o2 uses so it may be worth googling or checking which radio your running. In future when flashing a custom firmware use one that doesn't have a radio file bundled with it.

Unless something has changed you are incorrect. Any radio updated away from the stock one locked orange handsets. No other networks are affected.
All froyo roms require the latest radio. This is not optional.
Something has changed because I have a locked orange desire, with the latest radio running the latest open desire firmware and have not had a sim lock message.
I wouldn't of said what I did if I wasn't sure
Best custom rom is neophyte 1.6 if you want sense froyo
Well I guess the only way to find out will be to pop a different sim in and see what happens. I haven't yet seen anyone with an O2 branded phone with problems flashing to froyo on my forum travels, but I guess its worth finding out for sure. I'm prepared to pay for an unlock code if need be.
So would I be better off using clockworkmod to flash to 2.2 or Rom manager? I assume I have the choice now?
I've taken a titanium backup so now all I have to do is put the radio and os roms on the root of my SD card, flash, *pray* then restore my apps after it reboots?
Thank you again to all. I wouldn't have done any of this if it wasn't for you guys taking the time to help me understand this whole process. I prefer to know more than just "Follow these steps and this happens".
-L
Well I finally grew a pair and flashed neophyte 1.6 and i'm proper impressed! Thank you to everyone again for your help and advice.
For the record, I didn't need an unlock code. I just flashed the latest radio and rom straight after each other in clockwork and rebooted. That first boot is a loooong scary one but it was all good in the end
Thanks everyone!

It was by far the scariest thing I've done this year!
Only thing I seem to be having a problem with is Juice Defender + Ultimate Juice (if anyone uses it?). When Juice Defender disables mobile data depending e.g. when the screen is locked, it keeps coming back on by itself which just adds to the battery drain. I've scoured setting after setting in case there's something forcing mobile data back on after JD disables it but found nothing. This used to work perfectly before I switched roms and it's kinda frustrating.
I'll probably have to try a couple of roms until I find one that works well with all my apps.
No, UnrEVOked doesn't work with a HBOOT > 0.80. From what I've read, there is a way to downgrade your HBOOT to 0.80 but with very mixed success rates.
Okay so ive just bought a HTC Desire, after owning an Xperia X10, i was just wondering is it possible to root the Desire without unlocking the bootloader, I want to keep the HTC Sense UI, but be able to install things like setCPU and Titanium Backup Pro

Or course. But I recommend a custom rom, like leedroid for example(with htc sense )

Yes, don't need to unlock anything. Just download unrEVOked and away you go!
Don't worry about S-OFF (although people will tel you to do it) - it's not needed if that's all you want to do
HOWEVER, if you're the Orange ROM there will be no way of removing root and going back to 100% stock as sent by Orange if you root. Something to be mindful of
Its an unlocked device, thanks guys appreciate the help

Ah right! Well, as soon as you get it post up the information before you do anything else - best be certain on what you currently have before continuing
you can use unrevoked, and it will just root the phone for you.
You will still have the stock sense rom running, but it will be rooted allowing you to install apps which require a device to be rooted

S-off can also be used to alter the partition tables in order the get more space on /data which is where you're apps are stored.
I'm running Oxygen 2.0 with the Oxygen HBoot table and once I flashed the Oxygen table my free space on the phone went from 80MB free to over 300MB so that's why I went S-off. But make sure you know what you're doing first. If something goes wrong when you're attempting to S-off of flash a new partition table it will brick your phone.
I prefer to use A2SD+ - got 1.5GB partition so plenty of space
(Not that I actually much space - just like to know it's there)
That works too. I prefer it stored on my phone. A bit easier for me to set up and I find it runs faster with it not having to access the SD.
True, might look into that but I still use Sense - we'll see...

You can't upgrade the radio or recovery by yourself before you rooting you device. So , If you like the offical ROM so much, what you need to do is to find the lasted RUU.

Go to info about about your phone (in options) and post your exact Version-Number.
you can't flash this RUU just like that. You phone is branded, I suppose, so when you try to flash that RUU you'll get a cid-error. You can only flash T-Mobile ROMs and if you aren't offered an update when trying via the ota channel, there probably is no newer T-Mobile-Rom.
You can either wait for T-Mobile to release a newer RUU or unbrand it. Unbranding means you need to create a "goldcard" (use forum-search how to do this) and with this goldcard pluged in, you can flash the WWE-RUU that Keeray posted earlier.

I think so, as long as your Goldcard is installed. The Softwarenumber must be x.xx.405.x

No way to root any of the Evo's with updated software at the moment. The Japanese one because of their hboot and the US version because they fixed the GB exploit.

Heh, but sorry, not at the moment. If you're on 2.10+, you can't.
i thought all evo's were Japanese..
rooted found
i rooted my htc evo wimax isw11ht
flash cynogenmod 7
i finally found it!!!!
Yup! Used Revolutionary to root, then flashed CM7. Works great!
What's the difference between a japanese EVO and a American one?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The Japanese EVO unfortunately came with HBOOT 2.15.0001 which, until very recently, was unrootable. The Japanese EVO is under KDDI AU here in Japan, rather than Sprint USA. Other than that, I don't think there's really much difference.

Did you have any problems with the WiMax radio once you flashed the CM7 rom onto your phone? It did to mine
Does anyone else have any problems rooting with CDMA phones in Japan?
Yeah. Lost my.Wimax. looking to find a way to get back to AU stock.
There was a stock RUU for the Japanese Evo posted by xhausx on this forum I think. Some people got it to revert back to stock but others didn't.
With mine I had an old image of my rooted stock which I flashed and returned to AU and was able to get it replaced.
I couldn't seem to flash my wimax keys, but having looked around if you're using CWM to flash it won't do radios. Supposedly gotta use amon recovery.
Did you check if you had wimax prior to flashing a ROM?
If any is there could you answer me this if possible.
There seems to be WiMAX connectivity issues when flashing a custom ROM. Were there any problems prior to flashing ie. after turning s-off and rooting the phone? I'd like to try overclocking my phone, but I don't wanna lose my WiMAX access. Any advice would be great. Cheers.

B4 u flash anything, just make a backup of your wimax partition, NOT just the keys. Then if anything gets borked, you will be safe. Once the keys are gone, they are not recoverable except if you have a backup partition. Just Google search backing up the ENTIRE partition.

Maybe through HTC dev?

I rooted once before and backed up the WiMAX partition like you say. However I couldn't get a connection which seemed to be a common issue with those rooting the Japanese version of the evo, as most roms use sprints' base whereas here we have au which uses a different software version and whatnot. Did you manage to flash without any problems to your WiMAX here in Japan?

did you look at this blog for rooting method?

I have a Orange branded DHD, unlocked via IMEI, running 2.3.3, i want to install the HTC rom as i have been told it comes with far less bloatware.
I do want a genuine rom though, rather than a cooked version, so have opted for the HTC rom. I found and downloaded the following file which claims to be what i need.
Am i correct?
RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.36.405.8_R_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_187331_signed
Also, as it is a genuine rom, do i still need to do all that "rooting" business?
Or can i go ahead and install/flash?
Thanks for any possible help or tips.

If your phone is allready rooted then, after installing the new Official ROM it will be unrooted again, You can try downgrading to the official 1.3x version and then update from HTC direclty. I dont know if you gonna have any problems
because your phone is branded, but i dont rly think so. Im just a user using roms etc, have no idea for further instructions!
Considering you paid a hefty sum for your Desire HD, i strongly recommend you first find your branded rom somewhere in the dev forum first. Just in case you have to reflash teh stock rom for warranty issues. For the rest, I also recommend downgrading to 1.3x first and then flashing whatever you want (cooked roms need s-offs and root). I have a guide in my sig on how to root, s-off and flash a rom, however, stock roms are executables from what i know so you might not need to follow my guide just plug in your dhd with drivers installed and let the exe do its work. Regarding downgrading, you will find a link in my thread to the "Downgrading to 1.3x thread". Have fun
Edit:
I know of 3 ways to brick your dhd:
1. Partitioning your sd card with clockwork mod recovery 3.0.2.5
2. Editing some esf files or something and mistyping something
3. SMashing your phone into a brick wall repeatedly
So, don't worry so much, it's not a galaxy S
Yes, the file i have is an executable file. I think it is the most recent genuine HTC rom available for this device.
So, that being said, i should not need to root or downgrade etc? Just double click & go?
Surly you should not have to root your device when wanting to install a different, but still genuine rom?
I have found it very difficult to locate stock roms for this device.
Going to have another search now, but if anyone knows a shortcut, i'd be more than gratefull

You will need to downgrade first as your device is branded. Once downgraded just run the RUU and Bobs your mothers brother.
If you have an orange dhd you will need the orange upgrade. I'm pretty sure if you try to use a different one it won't let you do it. I'm not 100‰on this.
I used to get android updates for T-Mobile brand off the T-Mobile website.

Which is why you need to downgrade.
@ ghostofcain
And to downgrade is it just a simple rom flash? Or do i need to root or s-off etc first?
I know this would be the case with cooked roms, but i'm only talking about Genuine releases here.
I'm currently running an Orange branded 2.3.3 ROM, so if i simply flash an older rom to the device, then i am all set to flash the newest HTC generic rom to the Desire, right?
That older rom i need to flash first, it would have to be Orange branded too right? Is there any chance you could give me it's exact name or provide a link?
Thanks greatly for the help.

Once you have downgraded you don't need root or s-off to flash the RUU and you don't have to flash an orange branded one. You can flash any updated .exe.
if I have time ill find you a link..
*EDIT*
Also bear in mind if you flash the orange ruu. Or any other branded rom. It will still have all the bloatware you are trying to get rid of.
You must flash a standard HTC one. Go to the HTC website and download the official update from there. You will need to downgrade first though.

That's the problem, the HTC 2.3.3 rom was only ever released OTA, and is not available to download from their website.
Although i think i have managed to find the ".exe" version of that rom.

From what i can tell, this seems to be the newest, Genuine HTC 2.3.3 rom for the Desire HD.
So, i just need to downgrade and then install this right?
So what do i need & what do i do to downgrade, bearing in mind what i currently have installed?

follow this guide. downgrade to 1.32 and then flash the ruu you have. don't worry if its not the right one it won't install it if it's wrong. hit the thanks button if I've helped.

Ok, so where would i find this 1.32 rom?
Also, when i have this HTC rom loaded on, will i still receive any OTA updates? And would they be HTC branded one's from that point on?

the 1.32 downgrade should be in the link I sent you. I'm not sure about the ota updates. its seriously worth considering doing a full root after you dg and try out some of the fantastic roms some of which are kept as stock but you have more options and root privilages.

You have to downgrade and use a goldcard to de-brand your phone. You cannot flash a standard WWE ROM on a branded phone. After you have completed the steps of de-branding and flashing the latest WWE ROM.... OTA updates may or may not work.
Everything you have asked about is already thoroughly documented elsewhere in the forum and I suggest you go read all the stickies. Do not do anything with your phone that you do not fully understand as you could run into problems.
With Regards to warranty and such-like that people have mentioned, HTC don't really care what you do to the phone software-wise, they might have a problem if you returned it too them in pieces claiming that it just came out of your pocket that way.
Just read everything here and you should be good to go.
Peace.
