[MISC] Android 2.3.3 Platform - G2 and Desire Z Android Development

Android 2.3.3 Platform available and it`s a small feature release.
Hope soon something will added to the CM7 Nightlys.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.3.3.html

Honestly I'm sure it will, as 2.3.2 was almost instantaneous in the nightlies. Seems to me like the only noteworthy thing is NFC structure changes, of which G2 owners can't even use. Everything else is almost not even worth mentioning (not a complaint, just a statement).

Don`t know exactly if it`s the only thing which was changed.
But Yes,about the NFC thing:

I think you linked the wrong thing?

No,I mean the NFC thing, there are comments to this too!

anyone else waiting for 2.2 before rooting

I feel I should w8 will it allow apps 2sd?

Depends how long you're willing to wait
Froyo should include A2SD, but who knows when HTC comes up with the 2.2 upgrade for Desire.
this is true...however should b fairly quick its the flag ship Android mobile can't see another 4release in conjunction with 2.2 release

I'm waiting ;-). Everything that I need the phone to do, it does... SO no real need to update as of yet. Will probably wait for official updates as I prefer official releases (possibly less bugs etc)
Moved to General Desire Forum.
Don't see where this hooks into Development or Rom cooking.
sorry thought it was ok here

Isn't the whole point of 2.2(FroYo) that the Android segmentation is abolished and that we would be downloading Sense UI from the market.
If this is true we should all expect 2.2 the moment it is released as it will be a generic, basic Google ROM, then we would just have to wait for HTC to update Sense for 2.2 and we would be able to download that and off we go!
I am not sure if I am correct but this is the way I understood Android to be going.
i am actually, kinda scared of rooting im not 100% sure but seen somwhere a news bout release being sometime in the summer may-june think it was
I'm of those waiting... unless I can find a quick, simple and automated way of backing up and restoring everything about my current phone fast, it 'ain't happening until I see 2.2.
Many other reasons... including too many unknowns, unsubstantiated unclears, bricking not being an option for me in these months and so forth.

Dont bank on HTC being quick to update the Desire. They dont have a tradition of updating their top models any faster than their lower models, and we all know how slow they are with those!
That is the big deal. Android 2.2 will come maybe next month, but when HTC 'come' with their update, who knows...

The big difference here is the existence of the Nexus One, which will get an update pretty much straight away.
Since the Desire is very close hardware wise to the Nexus One, I'd hope that it wouldn't take too long to "Sensify" 2.2 and get an update out to Desire users. Failing that, if you're rooted, they'll be cooked 2.2 Nexus ROMs out for the Desire in fairly short order.

I was waiting, but ended up rooting tonight. I reckon SetCPU alone was worth rooting for.

Actually, SetCPU will have no effect when running on rooted Desires.
When I pull the sliders across, it seems to have no effect, and the green max and min frequencies remain unchanged. HTC has a driver that they implement which keeps overriding SetCPU. We need to hope they (HTC) release the Kernel source. Once this happens, there will surely be a release of a modified Kernel with SetCPU support and overclocking/undervolting (assuming the CPUs in the Desire are binned the same way as the CPUs in the Nexus, this should yield a 10% overclock and better battery life).
Problem is HTC is really slow in releasing the source, it's borderline, illegal, and very irritating.

I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but my sliders seem to work fine. The widget display claims my speeds are scaling too, and my battery life seems remarkably improved, though that could be due to running the MCR. I don't know.
[EDIT] I see what you mean about the sliders now. Battery life still seems better though?

I wouldn't have thought so. I wouldn't like to be Orange, dealing with thousands of customers who updated their phone (or had their phone automatically apply an update) and who've suddenly lost functionality/apps etc.

See I thought this was the whole point of FroYo. We all get the basic Google Rom (maybe with a few service provider tweaks) then we download UI of our choice from the market.
Apart from service providers having to mess around with the Rom there's no reason why we should be waiting for months to get it. Most people in this thread seem to give the impression that we won't see 2.2 for ages while HTC upgrade Sense(I assume there's a few ex-hero users in here). This isn't true though, we'll be running 2.2 and waiting for a download of sense via the market. yeah?

the only problem with this is... nexus one is updated by GOOGLE and the desire is not.... the nexus one will be the first to get 2.2 and from there im betting other devices wont see it till acouple months later...i bet the droid will see it before the desire...sense ui jus slows down the update process..
I can't wait until Froyo gets here!!!

Can I ask why you think this? I reckon we'll get 2.2 the same time as the Nexus . If everything I've read about 2.2 is correct then Sense will just be released to the market when it's updated for us to download.
am I really wrong or the only person in this thread who understands what's going on with 2.2?

Gingerbread?

Aren't we like behind the times with froyo?

You obviously missed my point. Your question was akin to telling people standing in the rain that it's raining. We all know our phone is running an outdated OS, that's why the current CM7 port is under way.
and don't worry, there won't be a release after gingerbread in a while because google is making sure that some fragmentation is going to be removed, which will allow manufacturers to catch up to the google release cycle
I'm not so sure.. And while I was interested in getting 2.2, i've been running that since December. While 2.3 is the latest, I don't believe it offers much of an improvement over 2.2, so other than just saying I'm running 2.3, I don't know what the big deal is, maybe someone can enlighten me and make me anxious for 2.3?
With that said, my guess is most people will be happy with 2.3 for all of about a week. Then they will be wanting something else for their pathetic lives.

GPU acceleration in certain parts of the OS, improved JIT, better battery, need I say more?
And there wouldn't be anything to ask for if Samsung had anything other than piss poor software.
I thought only the Nexus phones had Gingerbread so far.
If I'm correct, then we're not really behind - the developer phones are just ahead as I'd expect them to be.
If I'm wrong, then I'm an idiot as I expect me to be.

All of Sony's new Xperia phones have Gbread, though they're only released in Europe, not to mention the Gbread roms leaked for thr Droid 2/X, but so far only the NEXUS's have official Gbread in the U.S.
Oh okay thanks for that. I had no idea what the Xperias were running.
I still don't think we're actually behind. Every mid level and up phone having Gingerbread while we don't...THAT'S behind.
Of course we're not bleeding edge, but we never were.

Just the fact that we are even uncertain about Gbread in the future is a problem. Even LG (a no name as far as Android is concerned) has promised a Gbread update for its Optimus 1 (a phone selling for between FREE an $50 on contract)

My OCD wouldn't let me go without fixing it.
In all fairness, we are not the only smartphone left out in the rain.
From a markting perspective, it sells new phones. This isn't iOS with one device to focus on selling.
If all android phones had the same OS and received updates at the same time, then you would see ads selling us hardware. Most ads point out the operating system as a selling point and this is because there's too much compitition between android devices as well as those of the same manufacturer (think samsung).
It's not fair but then again how are you to convince manufacturers to stop? Google is trying by their recent policy changes, but I don't think we will see a solid standard in android OS for another few years.
The complication is furthered by production of low cost, entry level android devices that don't play well or contain the hardware to push something like GB. You need this demographic since pay as you go appears to be a growing trend.
I am hopeful for a GB release but I know that if we want something bad enough, XDA will likely to figure it out.
Sent from my Epic4g using the internet.
Hummm..
I have builds of GB for both my Epic and EVO.
Not sure where all the fuss over no GB comes from, must be iPhone fans who get Android phones instead, wanting to remain stock for some reason

A potential good news out of a bad news

According to this BBC article published today (17 May 2011) all android version with the exception of 2.3.4 version can expose personal data during the identification (Edit: Authentication) process with google services. A bad news ineed.
The good news, though, is that if this problem is publicised enough then it will force companies like Motorola to provide up-to-date version of android for their handsets. Of course not all old handsets can be upgraded but we all know Defy is very capable phone in terms of Android 2.3.4.
I'm still waiting for Froyo 2.2 upgrade, in the UK, and so furious with Motorola over this. Anyways, that matter is for another post.
yeah, tell me about it. I bought the phone from tmobile on date of launch... was told q1, then q2, now end of year... ahhh LOL
This doesn't mean anything. If the flaw is really critical, then I guess Google just release a patch for the module that's responsible for authentication - they won't force all carriers to update the whole system. Instead only some small fix may be pushed to affected devices.
Google announced today they will fix the problem on server-side.
Don't get it really, if plain text was sent out to google servers how the problem could be fixed on server-side? Also if no fix is necessary on the client side then why Android 2.3.4 was modified to encrypt data before sending it to the google?
Maybe this is me not understanding what the problem was. I found it difficult to imagine google would lie about the fix solution.

If Motorola is not going to give us 2.3.4 then they will have to release 2.2.3 to us if the solution turned out ineffective on the server-side.

I really like (previously loved it) my Defy but can't understand why I have purchased a product about six months ago that I couldn't use many features that I wanted from day one. Many apps (email in particular) work properly from 2.2 and above.
I will only buy another phone from Motorola if it had the latest Android installed on it. I don't believe they are shipping Atrix with 2.2. Motorola will have the same attitude towards Atrix upgrade too.

Yeah? Well, email that didn't work on 2.1 still doesn't work on 2.2. For me anyway. Browser was way better in 2.1. Screen seems a bit smoother -- marginally. But you can move some apps to SD card.
you all should use cm7. it still has some bugs, but nothing serious, and its waay better and faster than motorolas softwares. plus its 2.3.4

If Defy officialy remains on Android 2.2 then I will be looking for alternative roms without caring about the warranty.

Will anyone make a 3.2 rom for EVO?

3.2 in AOSP, will anyone make a Rom?

i believe that is only for tablets, i may b wrong, and that doesnt look to be the full source for 3.2 so it wouldnt work for our evos.
Yup, it's a start, but still need to wait for the full source to get any really good ports going. It might be possible to run on a phone, but poster above me is correct that it's made for tablets.
I know we had some SDK ports around here, but I don't remember them being more than a proof of concept and not a daily driver kind of deal.
Honestly I don't think we will ever see this. We might get some themes for the look but the overall guts probably not.
I don't remember what tablet it was(Samsungs maybe) but the bounty is/was $400+ to get it to function as a phone about 6 months ago and I don't think it's happened. This would be roughly the same concept here too.

Firefox OS on SGH-T989

The Samsung Galaxy S2 is actually listed by Mozilla as a supported device for Firefox OS....

... with one important note:
Samsung Galaxy S2
The only model that works is the i9100; no other variants are officially compatible. (i9100P might work, since the only change is a NFC chip added)

Does this mean our SGH-T989 will not be compatible? Has anyone actually tried Firefox OS with our model?
If someone tried it, there would probably be a thread on it somewhere. About it working on our devices, just take a step back and think, can we run i9000 roms? Our phones and the i9000 are pretty different and I doubt Mozilla would go out of their way to get a t989 and do the work themselves, since our phone isnt International and only sold in a handful or markets. Can it be made to work on our phones? Possibly, with a knowledgeable Dev doing the work, and even then who knows.
The OS as a whole seems to be still in a "beta" form so its not ready yet for the consumer so I doubt anyone would do all the work to port it over to have a half assed OS on their phones, but possibly with time, when the OS is good to go for the market someone will do the leg work to port it over to our phones, but I probably wouldnt hold my breath.

You could say that. I personally think it was beta back in the Gingerbread days, and ICS was a huge improvement and JB is the topping to the ice cream sandwich lol, imo JB is like rc, its a finished product, it can only get better.

Then sooo were iOS 1,2 and 3 lol. You guys just say that because even in the 2.x days android was faaaaar lagging behind iOS in both the software AND hardware requirements. Jellybean was the first rendition to properly render GUI elements using the GPU (ICS started it, wasn't complete though) hence the notorious "android lag.". IOS was smooth from the start, powervmr .
That being said, I personally dislike Apple products, go figure

don728871 said that Android is still a Beta. In a sense, that is true. It's a work in progress that will probably not end. Ever. In that sense, it is still a beta as it also takes in data and user submitted reviews about their issues, likes, dislikes and the such to make it better and better and better.
Now, for Firefox OS, I'd consider it more of a pre-release alpha. They've got the concept down, they've got a working-ish OS for the most part but yes, like you said, it's a half assed ish OS for the most part and probably, nobody would use this as their daily driver until a stable beta (after extensive testing, updates and stuff) is released.
So for now, nothing to expect here. Let's move along shall we?
Wait a sec, let's look at iOS.
Now, yeah, people say it's lag free. True-ish for the most part...
but let's look at it from another perspective. Has iOS 6 changed in any way?
Yeah, I guess in optimization and whatnot but come on, what OS has changed so dramatically?
Evolved in such a way that it's already awesome but it just keeps getting better and better?
That, as we all know, is android. From Cupcake, we've come a long way to Jelly Bean.
That was 4 years ago. Took a while...
Now knowing how other OS's evolved,
it is now safe to assume that Firefox OS isn't going anywhere far for now.

Excellent point! Android Evolution has been gradual and drastic ... but still, when it did pick up, it was different. I think if Firefox OS can include a captivating element right from the start, it can make an impact. However, I don't see it being too radically remarkable.
