Great News hehe !
With ChevronWP7 hitting the end of its working life next month, we have some good news to report on. Julien Schapman, the creator of TouchXperience and recently the WP7 Registry Editor, has released details about an upcoming project, titled Windows Phone Device Manager. Most likely inspired by Windows Mobile's infamous device manager, the tool allows you to manage your sideload your applications, explore the device, sync with Zune, and display information about the device.
Even better, the tool will automatically developer unlock your device upon connecting, which removes the need for any ChevronWP7 hassle. The tool is set to release in the next few days, and is compatible with all Windows Phone 7 devices. The developer of it also states that if it becomes possible, he might create an open marketplace, similar to Cydia on iOS devices.
How the tool works is not clear, but fortunately the unlocking method it uses will continue to work even after the next update. Read more at TouchXperience.

This is old news? That article is based on what the developer posted on his website on Jan 10th. The program was supposed to be released last week but he has not released it yet because he wants to make sure the unlock will work after the update. So no guarantees yet.
Sounds promising though!
And how would he know it continues to unlock after the upgrade I wonder? Geez, talk about hitting your own drum.

hope this unlocker works for my hd2 :/
can´t jailbreak on my windows 7 ...
I read somewhere that it, too, uses a fake certification server. If that is true it will most likely NOT work. It's just to simple to fix this for MS.
But the software itself is pretty cool, too. And as long as no one has got an update on his/her device, we can't state whether it works or not. But the idea of an open Marketplace on WP7 is pretty cool. IMHO, Developing for/Hacking WP7 goes a lot faster than I've expected!
Please keep discussion and speculation threads in WP7 General!

According to this article, Updating to NoDo using Chevron WP7 Updater will prevent any official updates to your phone in the future.

With such a vague statement from Microsoft, Idk if I should believe it. If it is true, then I am sure a work around will be found

I'm sure the good people here at XDA will find a way around it. But still, its disheartening news
Might?
I believe the original article says it "might" put the phone into a state where it cannot receive future updates. Users have reported that they indeed did receive notifications when their carrier was pushing the update (actually MS was pushing the update) and those updates (re-updates of NoDo) went smoothly. I think the jury is out on this and we need to see if there is any validity to the statement from MS which, by the way, I don't think has been "vetted" at all. I would like to see the actual valid source at MS and the evidence. I know that hundreds of AT&T WP7 users will be getting their notifications soon (it appears that you will get the notification even if you have already used Chevron Updater and updated to NoDo) and can try to update and see what happens. I would say that if they perform the official update over the Chevron Update and it works, this is garbage meant to scare people and hide a vulnerability provided through the just released Tools.
IMHO
the update on the original article says:
"could possibly put the updated Windows Phone 7 device into a state where it cannot receive future regular updates to the OS anymore and the only fix will be re-flashing the device with an original stock ROM".
note that it says could and it's not even certain.
If you followed the instructions to get the nodo update w/o the Chevron updater you have a backup though the Zune software you can roll back to if this should become a problem.
Tools
I believe the Tools also provide a "Revert" function. From my readings, this was meant to take you back to 7004.

Like you, I read the article(s) and got the impression that this was speculative and the source was not sufficiently identified. I have been on these forums for years and with these types of indications, time is needed to 1. Vet the source and 2. See the evidence. IF it turns out to be true, it may just be an item in the Diagnostic program or a key in the registry. Too early to panic. Half the stuff that comes out of MS and AT&T is garbage anyway. In this case, they were both embarassed by the ease at which this was accomplished and the fact that the Phone Tools provided the means.
The Chevron updater is using files directly from Microsoft's own servers and program. I honestly, from a pure data standpoint, don't know how future updates can discern phones that have been officially updated vs chevron updated when both use MS bits. I wouldn't worry about the warning. It more so sounds like MS doesn't want you updating outside of carrier approved bits to which I say F THAT.

Hey even if the block it for you guys... im sure you'll have it on your phone before its release anyway.... LOL....
I know I will
I waited for carrier update notice and after updating, device is still jail broken with no problems. I recommend people just use the legit method when updating to be safe.
I updated with Chevron monday, and the update was pushed by the carrier tuesday. Now I've got the update notification every time I sync my phone with Zune. If I accept it, it go through the update process (approx. 10 minutes), then notify me again the next time I plug the phone! Anyone else has this problem?

My question for you is ... did you finally get an update for your Panther...?
Ok, here is the rolldown.
Complete BS i say to that article claiming the software to Block any future update!
Here is why.
I used the Chevron tool to force the update. The Update workd well.
After restarting my phone, and connecting it again to zune, guess what haoppend?
I got the Update message again!
I Re ran the update through Zune, wich worked fine.
the backup however now shows me the first update i got through chevron updater so in fact the same as NoDo. No going back to pre NoDo with out a complete reflash of the ROM, but hey, why would i want that
So for me, what is stated is just not true!
The Update works, even after using chevron.
My device stayed unlocked as well with unlimited sideload.
No problems so far in using it
Greetings

No sir. Waiting on Walshie to release his Chevron.Updater source to see if there's anything we can do to trick the servers into updating us.

If you know how to reflect you don't need their code, just reflect the support tool and you can determine if that is possible. Also you will notice that this statement (scare) is complete bull****, because the calls are the same used by Zune. (ZuneWmdu.dll)
The way it's worded, I'll bet the MS guys never intended them to be updated this way and don't know what it will do and warned people accordingly. Pretty standard procedure to me.

Hey guys,

A couple of days ago we posted about a Workaround for forced NoDo update which works pretty well. But if you are one of those Windows Phone 7 users, who still haven’t got their hands on the NoDo update(Copy-Paste) for their WP7 device?Wait no more,ChevronWP7 Updater to the Rescue.
Yes, one of the masterminds behind the famous Chevron WP7 Team Chris Walsh seems to have found a solution to the NoDo update problem with a simple solution, with a bit help from the recently released Windows Phone Support Tool.
Chris has released Chevron Updater utility which will allow you to update your phone with a few simple steps. So if you are tired of waiting for the AT&T’s update or any other carrier for that matter then head over to chris’s blog and download the Microsoft Windows Phone Support Tools and ChevronWP7.Updater.exe console app and follow the on screen instructions. The source for the updater application will be available by tomorrow.
Chris Walsh's ChevronWP7.Updater is a command line console app which prompts the user to follow the steps but it requires that the device language is supported by ChevronWP7.Update (at the moment the tool supports English US, English UK, French, Italian, Spanish and German) and it's strongly recommended not trying out any other language combinations!
Anyway, while this seems to be an interesting option to shorten the time for getting the Windows Phone 7 NoDo update, you better know what you are doing since such a workaround can seriously damage your Windows Phone 7! I would suggest to better wait until your carrier releases its Windows Phone 7 NoDo update but just in case you want it now, I've told you that there's a workaround.
THE BAD NEWS
UPDATE: Looks like Chris Walsh has taken down ChevronWP7.Updater, the download isn't available anymore. He has not yet given the reason for the take-down and therefore it's unclear if he has taken it down on Microsoft's request or because it caused more problems than it helped! Again, use it on your own risk and better know what you are doing if you plan to use it!
UPDATE 2: In an info, Microsoft seriously warns to use ChevronWP7.Updater. According to Microsoft, the use of ChevronWP7.Updater could possibly put the updated Windows Phone 7 device into a state where it cannot receive future regular updates to the OS anymore and the only fix will be re-flashing the device with an original stock ROM. At the end of the day if could mean that such Windows Phone 7 devices have to be send to the manufacturers or carriers service centers because unlike for Windows Mobile, stock ROMs are officially not available as a public download for end-users.
Bla bla bla microsoft..
yet, if you read the posts from that blog, people were getting nodo update notifications after using it, so that might be MS talking out of their azz.
those updates about ChevronWP7 Updater are AWESOME! I warned people about using the Chevron software. That things seemed a bit too convenient. That it probably was NOT a good idea to trust software coming from the same people that were supposedly in talks with Microsoft, that stopped supporting their own software, and that no one had really heard much from in a long while. When something is too good to be true, it usually is.
In other words best if u used the chevron updater u should either wait and see what will happen on future upadates (since u are up to date with chevron updater right now) or if u want to be sure u have to go the hard way unbranding your phone by the gold card method or whatever to get an "old" unbranded ROM installed and get the nodo update on this unbranded ROM over "normal" Zune update?
Prolly I should just switch to iphone5 once it gets realesed even tho I was really enjoying my WP7 so far
First I get all happy because WP7 owners can now upgrade their phones easily.
Then I get all sad because MS is acting up again (and might have forced the Chevron guys to take the updater offline).
WTF, Microsoft?
Microsoft isn't acting up.
I mean, seriously... If they were acting up they'd be closing other loopholes to getting the update (i.e. turning your connection off to force an early update notification) not telling people to not use Chevron.
Use it, but don't come here *****ing when you're still waiting on Mango 2 months after everyone else has gotten it.
Android updates no no different. Lots of times installing leaked updates or getting them through other means can have the same effect. You stop getting update notifications, etc.
Just Wait and See
People, just mellow out about this. Those were MS servers that the Chevron Updater pulled from with MS software, using a tool that MS developed that contained the hole that allowed Chevron Updater access.. There are those in Canada who used this method to update and then, days later, got a regular update notice for their carrier approved update and updated yet again, officially, with no problems. There is no way to verify whether this unsupported, thrid hand statement from God knows who and where, is real or not. Only time will tell and until then you have NoDo. If it turns out to be a problem it will be dealt with, I am sure. In fact, the statement says it is possible, not that it will. For Gods sake, ANYTHING is possible but few things are probable. So, lower your bloodpressure and wait for the next release whether it be a device specific firmware release, an official carrier approved release or the next official post-NoDo release.
The 10 colors on WP7 Mango just aren't doing it for me. I'm pretty new so could anyone give me a few pointers on how to change these colors to ones of my own liking?
My info:
HTC Trophy
Verizon Wireless
Mango 7712
Edit: I probably should have posted this in Q&A I'm sorry!
If you are unlocked and running anything other than Mango 7661 than you want to install Advanced Config. This allows you to set custom themes, custom ring tones, etc.
I'm trying to unlock my device, but I'm finding it impossible since I can't send an .exe file to my phone via any email service and you cannot unzip on WP7 so how do I go about doing this?
the exe is run from the computer
read the guide before you start
the .cer is run from the phone

ChevLab unlock, then use Heathcliff74's tool. Then you can put anything on your phone.
Well worth the $9 IMO. Only took me 30-45 minutes to go from stock mango to interop-unlocked with internet sharing, advance config, customed out.

Actually this was also the case for me, however after flashing with Ansar's 5.01 Trophy ROM, Advanced Config no longer do the trick for me.. Also Registry Editor no longer changes anything. But I've got IS working, so I'll live without Accent Color changing for a while until a new ROM gets released (DFT v2).
@Seed 2.0: You're instructing the owner of an HTC phone to use a tool that only runs on Samsung phones. Think about that one for a sec.
@e_rl: The Chevron Labs unlock will let you sideload "most" apps to your phone, but doesn't allow apps that can access high permissions (ID_CAP_INTEROPSERVICES). This includes anything like Advanced Config. For that you need "interop-unlock" which is difficult to get on HTC phones - you pretty much have to roll back to NoDo to get it right now (yes, it's a pain). You also need to have the Connection Setup app from HTC's marketplace, so don't bother rolling back if you don't. Then look up the threads on "U2M7720". It will also get you on the release build, which is a good thing - still running 7712 by now is just pointless.
Oh, by the way, the color shown in the ads is actually on the phone already, or t least on all the ones I've seen so far. It used to be called "orange" and was renamed to "mango" for this version release. Still, it's nice to be able to use truly custom colors.

Hey man i see you mention HTC phones rolling back to NODO to get interop unlocked . I was under the impression that you would have to be Pre nodo , which is impossible on the Verizon Trophy .. i think . I was led to believe that Interop unlock on the Verizon trophy at all is impossible ... are you saying that it is ? Because i still have a nodo backup and have no issue with going back to it if it means interop .
Or maybe i am misunderstanding you .. thanks for any light you can shed on the situation !
No, you only have to roll back to *some* pre-Mango build (7403, the intermediate build between NoDo and Mango, even works; it doesn't have interop-lock).
The reason for rolling back to pre-NoDo is if you needed to use the original ChevronWP7 Unlocker, which doesn't work on NoDo or newer. If you have a developer (AppHub) account, or if you use the new ChevronWP7 Labs unlocker, you can dev-unlock the phone on NoDo and then install U2M7720.
Sorry for being a pain , but im relatively new to WP7 and you just made my entire week by saying interop is possible . Could you maybe lay out a step by step ? I am currently unlocked via Chevronlabs (new one) .
Word around the Trophy section is grim and this would bring some excitement to everyone if it works .
I do not have HTC connection settings in my HTC market ... does that mean its no good now ?
Yeah, sorry - if you don't have Connection Setup then you won't be able to interop-unlock on Mango right now. It's possible another app can be used the same way, but that will require more investigation. To be honest, I've not actually used U2M7720 myself - I interop-unlocked my HD7 by upgrading to Mango during its pre-release period, and using Connection Setup - but there have been multiple reports of it working.
The trick is that Connection Setup is an interopservices app that can be run on Mango anyhow, because it's marketplace signed, but it reads a file on the device that can contain additional operations to perform while setting up your connection (the \Windows\CustClear.provxml file). Prior to Mango, you use an interop app to place that file there (numerous apps exist, U2M7720 is one such but hardly the only - you can even do it manually using TouchXplorer). Then after upgrading, you run Connection Setup and it processes the registry change instructions in the provxml file for you. This makes the required changes to interop-unlock your phone.
The catch is that the official upgrade straight from NoDo to Mango also installs an HTC update that breaks the ability of Connection Setup to use the CustClear.provxml file. U2M7720 works around this by using the beta-upgrade path, putting your phone on retail Mango but without the HTC update (it can still be installed, but installs separately). Because I upgraded my phone from the pre-release anyhow, I didn't need U2M7720. Connection Setup isn't optional, though.
EDIT: Connection Setup is now back in the Marketplace! Much rejoicing to be had.
hmmm .. so would it work if you (or some other fine xda member) uploaded the xap for connection setup? Also , I upgraded to mango during the beta prerelease as well , but then did the official update .
So even if i roll back to NODO , since i did the official update , it will still be broken ? Thats terribly disappointing .
I guess it is impossible after all .

umm.... Advanced Config originally started on HTC devices am i wrong? Samsung Focus has some mishandled exception error when launching.
@goldenpipes: It's totally possible that it did. This fact is even remotely relevant why? It's been available for, and functional on, HTC, Samsung, and LG phones for many months now, since well before Mango.

Unfortunately, after the Win32Exception error, the apps UI works, but in terms of functionality it doesnt (for me at least), it throws a whole bunch of error codes at me when I try to apply the custom accent changes...
I generally don't care so much about not being able to:
1. transfer sms and contacts TO sim
2. sync doc, txt, and pdf files, offline, through Zune
3. sync flac or divx files
4. make an offline backup of contacts or of the whole phone configuration
5. create new accent colors
6. toggle wifi/gps/3g data/bluetooth with a single tap from the home screen
7. dictate sms or other speech orders in my native language
etc...
All of the above limitations (and some more) can be tolerable at some degree because of WP7 general superiority in other levels.
BUT...
I'm really pissed off with Microsoft...They have totally abandoned open market phones...First, we had a major error with Mango for LG update, that forced some people to flash a new official rom in order to get it. I never got a tethering update for my open LG and now I don't even get the latest official 7740 update. I don't f$%^ care about carriers. I bought an officially OPEN device and I demand support, or else they can stop selling us illusions...

Blame your OEM, not Microsoft for not getting tethering. They are the ones delivering the proper drivers needed for tethering to be enabled. The feature is already built in in Mango. Concerning 7740 you're right. But it has been released when? Yesterday? No update so far has reached all users at the same time. It has always taken a few weeks until every single Windows Phone user out there received an update. Knowing that 7740 won't change much, I personally do not really care about when I will receive it.

It doesn't fix the keyboard disappearing issue, so it's pretty much useless. This is by far the biggest annoyance for me right now. Keyboard disappears 10+ times when i'm typing a SMS. And in some apps you can't bring back the keyboard by touching the input box. I have to copy/paste and try again.

You are right here, but this wouldn't have happened if Microsoft had put strict rules around its ecosystem. It's unacceptable for such a unified quality concept to have basic specs like tethering, managed almost randomly (at will) by the OEMs without Microsoft's supervision. LG has released the firmware for branded phones (so, there is no arguing here that they couldn't have released it because of hardware restrictions) and totally rejected all of those people who have open phones. WHO controls this type of marketing anarchy around one of the most innovative, popular products of the world?
I'm shocked by this management attitude, because I'm a Microsoft customer for over 18 years and I know very well that they are aces in product support. As I mentioned earlier, ιn my first post, this is not the only fault Ι've been through and I'm looking forward to see this company measuring its actions with responsibility and care but, right now I'm totally disappointed.
