It is a bit strange that the defy is so rugged and everyproof but does not have a place where you can attach a landyard or strap.
The Defy does not float and so I get worried when I go boating.
So I have cut a small length of braided soft fishing line and made a loop around the battery lid lock area. The braided line is soft and flattens which doesnt seem to cause any problems.
Now I can hook on my boating landyard which has a floaty thing on it and keeps me defy from sinking to the seabed.

Ha ha ha good innovation.

Wouldn't that break the waterproof seal in the battery casing?
nope. i believe worse case senario, the thin plastic strip between the loop will break off, leaving the lid still locked.
The camera, flash and mic are not in the sealed section of the lid, only the battery compartment is.
The loop is pretty much at the strongest point, being right next to the actual lock - plenty enough to carry the weight of the phone.
I wouldnt use the phone as a boat anchor, unless i had too.
That was funny...
Speaking of which, all these android phones I have been through, NONE, has this landyard holder anymore.
Motorola Cliq -> Motorola Cliq XT -> HTC Wildfire -> HTC Mytouch 3g -> Motorola Flipout -> LG Optimus T -> Motorola Bravo -> Samsung Vibrant ( wife ) and Motorola Defy ( me )
The Vibrant does have a lanyard hole....

Not what I meant, my bad? I meant that the seal would no longer be watertight since there's a piece of cord holding it open. Water getting into the battery compartment would be a bad thing...
look at your defy the seal is away from the lock and only covers the battery, the lock itself cant be water proof as it is made of a moving mechanisim
I have one by this company for my desk and it really grips.
http://www.clingo.com/on-the-go/universal-mobile-neklit
Also, at least on my phone, that "seal" around the battery doesn't look like it possibly seal as there are open notches toward the lock end. Well, maybe...
There is a post from Chinese site.....

Sorry for the thread necromancy.
I too bought the Defy to be used while boating, while I'm not expecting to take it swimming, I find I usually end up with my phones wrapped in plastic bags, shoved into a waterproof holdall when using the dinghy.
The lack of a lanyard loop does seem to be a bit of a oversight for such a phone. However the phone is only a week old, and already the USB cover flap doesn't seem to be a snug enough fit, to keep anything but the lightest splash from letting out the magic smoke.
As this really will just be a summer boating phone, I was seriously considering Epoxying a brass picture hanging loop, to the handset chassis. then I can hang the Defy round my neck (under the waterproofs) and keep the Streak in the cabin.
There's a little hole on the top right of the back panel. It looks like there's plenty of space behind it to attach a lanyard there.

Dont think you can buy them yet mate. Im looking for one too! Im sick of the portruding Galaxy S logo on the back and dont like the mock carbon fibre look.
Yeah... I would love a new back without the Galaxy S logo. The faux carbon fiber pattern has grown on me but it really wouldn't go with the argyle TPU case that I'm most likely going to get.
It's like most phones are designed by two teams of industrial designers. One wants to make the phone as sleek and minimalistic as possible, then the other comes in afterwards and slaps as much branding and gaudiness as possible.
Anyone want to sell let me know I needed one bad thank you.
just get a TPU case and a back cover is not really necessary. Maybe get one thats not translucent...
You should be fine for a while with just a standard solid color TPU case, the back of the captivate has a sliding piece that actually holds the battery and everything in place with the back off.
Hell, it even looks cool to have the insides exposed with a clear TPU case!

Just order one from Samsung
I called Samsung today and ordered a back cover. $10.81 and I should have it in 3-5 business days. I was already registered on their website, so I just went to the service request section and chose "other." I was given a phone number and ticket number. It still took about 15 minutes on the phone, but I got it ordered.
would love a real carbon fibre matt back cover!
From the simplicity of the back cover it seems that it wouldn't take much to just fabricate one. The speaker cutouts could be basically any design with the right hand and a dremel tool.
It would look really cool if someone made one from anodized aluminum. There are two contact points on the back though, does this have to do with the antenna for the device?

I think it does. It may not, but I know before I'd take the cover off and the phone wouldn't connect to the network. It may just be a coincidence though.
some phones do use the cover for an antenna, i havent noticed any ill effects without it. ive software bricked many times and ill leave the cover off in the trouble shooting and reflashing process, phone still gets signal.
ok i just dismantled my phone (seriously). there is a cast metal chassis that is atached to the screen. there is copper plating on the back of the plasitic frame in a strip that stretches from one end of the phone to the other under the screws that are above the battery box and appear to help form a connection from the board to the chassis and connect to the round pin that contacts the back cover.
in my experience it appears to be a ground point probably for shielding. the second contact is probably for redundancy, it directly goes to the board but im not going to atempt to trace it's path.
the cover seems to be aluminum for anyone that has the idea of making a new one. or stripping the black off. the galaxy s is a feature stamped into the back. you may be able to mill or file or sand it off but beware you may go through.
Just got off the phone with Samsung. Seems they are out of backplates for this phone at the moment and will be contacted when they're available again.
Stupid me, accidentally dropped the dumb backplate when switching batteries and got a small dent.
You know what would be awesome? Getting a Giorgio Armani i9010 backplate for my phone.
Wondering if anyone knows of anywhere to get either like a stainless steel or aluminum backplate for the evo? (to replace battery door, not just go over it)
I've been looking everywhere, and since seeing the stainless steel one for the iphone4 just thought it would look bad ass.
I will pay if someone can make one, it would just be awesome to have a brushed metal back that matched the kickstand!
Thanks!
You know, no matter how good it would look, it'd probably totally screw up your reception.
What if instead, a metal looking plastic backplate? lol
I remember seeing THIS a a few days back. Not sure if this is what you are looking for.

I guess protection? Looks super ugly to me though....but hey, to each his own...
A metal battery door would be AWESOME.
It would look neat and flashy, until you started getting nicks and scratches on it. (My ipod ended up looking pretty beat up, craptacular, when I scratched the heck out of the back.)
But with the location of the radios/ antenna.... would it really mess with reception that much? Most are located at the top or the bottom of the phone I thought? Not right in the middle.
@napster
Thanks, but I meant like a metal piece that replaces the back part of the phone u take off to reveal the battery
Any one find one or willing to fabricate??

That would be pretty awesome. I'd go for it.
I would prefer a wood grain battery cover instead.

That would b awesome, but not that particular one....

what would be most awesomer would be a black chrome brushed aluminum back cover !
ll, hmm, depends on the price, but if it was a brushed aluminum and black in color, "an actual door, not just a case" id pay 20-30 plus shipping for it
A brilliant idea that would be awesome is a metal backplate , that is similar to the Blackberry Storm's battery door . Granted the same design wouldnt work since the back piece snaps into the phone but a metal door that allowed you to remove the battery without having to take the whole back cover off and putting extra strain on the retaining clips . Just some random thinking for those out there that swap batteries religiously
That would b awesome, like a 2 piece door, one that for into the other that the smaller one popped off right where the battery was....

I use a magnet mount I got in a truckstop -- it had a stainless steel tab that I stick to the back of the phone -- it then sticks to the magnet when I put it up there, and is pretty secure during travel. If the entire back were stainless, it would work much better.....
A brushed aluminum one would look sooo sick.
I would pay $30-40 for a nicely done one.
only using it for an example,

i don't need metal, but heck, even thicker/sturdier plastic would be nice. the backplate feels like it's going to snap in half every time i remove it.

Hey guys, just wanted to report that a Droid X/X2 car dock can be used for a Thunderbolt without a case on. Just remove the inner part of the dock that you would remove if a Droid X had a case on, unscrew the 4 little screws in the back side and turn the USB plug-in around and viola! Even the clamp on top can be used to hold the phone in place. I have not tried this with another phone yet as I just discovered this today. Hope this helps save some people money and can lead to more creative ideas!
thanks! I have my droid x dock just sitting around doing nothing right now
can you post pics
it works, its just a little tight getting the clamp to snap over the top edge when putting the TB in.
Also, after removing the 4 screws, I had a little bit of difficulty separating the plastic to be able to rotate the micro USB connector, but I was able to manage.
Here are the pics. If you notice it still clamps right in and doesn't mess with the volume rocker.

awesome info!
BAHGHGHH! I hate myself for treating my dock like trash ever since I got rid of my X. I don't even know if I still have that thing in my car. Gonna search now. If i threw it away, ill punch my own gonads
wow, thanks for this. i was actually going to purchase a car dock for myself in the next week or so. going to tackle this project instead.
thanks again!
It fits a little tight for me.
I have to squeeze the back of the plastic of the holder to get the clamp to grab the edge of the TB.
It might be good for "occasional" use, but not sure I trust it long term.
awesome, I bought one of these while they had them on sale for 20 for the wifes x. She never uses it so I get to
I wondered if it could modified..but never pursued it...and went and bought one for the bolt..at least now I have a backup in case it breaks.
Thanks for the info work good
does the droid X dock shake going over bumps like the crappy tbolt car dock?
Nah mine's pretty solid over bumps.
Nice. I have been looking for a good dock to use. You also might want to look at the Thunderbolt dock from ProClip. I have used two of their products in the past for different styles of iPhone and they were very stable.
Am I correct in that this will only work with the normal battery cover and not the inductive charging cover? I just got the inductive charging and now my car dock is pretty worthless and I want to find another one.
Wish it was for extended battery.
Will have to try this so I can leave a dock in my car and one in my truck. Thanks

Just drove from Northern Delaware to Kitty Hawk, NC, (and back) with my TB in the modified X car holder...
It stayed, the TB held in, and it was sturdy.
Because of having to take the case off, I likely wont use the dock/car holder on a daily basis, but its good enough for trips when I need to use the phone as GPS.
Anyone else's battery cover creak when it is pressed below the camera? I find that when I first put the cover on, it's fine, and then after a few hours, the creaking starts to show up. Wondering how normal this is.
I haven't heard anything from mine yet. One thing I used to do a lot on my Nokia N97 to stop that kind of creaking was to *LIGHTLY* bend out the pins that secure the back cover. Be careful not to overbend them or you'll end up shopping for a new back cover. I don't know how much that will help though, because from what I saw when I put my sim card in, was that all the connectors where located on the edges of the cover.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
No creaking hear. But then again, I didn't go looking for it
IMO, it's not a problem unless it happens without looking for it. All phones have some creaks if you start pressing on them from all different angles. Especially on parts that snap together.
Interesting. I definitely wasn't looking for the problem. it just happens all the time with normal use, because usually my index finger rests there when I'm on the phone, etc. Good to know it may just be mine though. Battery cover should be easy enough to get replaced.
My colleague pointed this out to me with his SGN, mine does it too. He placed a small adhesive padded sticky just below the cam. As i have a case, it doesnt bother me.
Any idea what he stuck to it exactly? That solutions sounds good enough for me
Not quite sure, will try to find out. It was a bit thick in my opinion though as the case stick out a bit around the lenses. Could probably take a scalpel to it tho to thin out the padding.

Got my nexus yesterday and noticed this. Although its not a big deal, its annoying once you notice it!
Do you guys know if Samsung would send me a new back cover for this or would I have to get the whole phone exchanged?
I have the same problem when I press on the green areas of the image I have a little creaking, but it feels when I press a little hard, but still bothers me because it's a $ 700 phone, I bought my phone on ebay to a Chinese seller, so I think I'll have to find a solution for myself.

I have this problem also. It is even worse with the extended battery cover. I love this phone overall but I am not impressed with the build quality.
Just to confirm, my SGN has exactly same weak spot on the back cover, but I'm fine with that It's still better built than my previous SNS with it's loose plastic frame
Yeah, plus on mine there is at least 2 mm between the battery cover and the phone itself just below the camera. Quite annoying ! I think I will put some ducktape.
Sent from xda appel ( Sorry for my bad english, I'm french)
I find this "creaking" almost being a feature I like to press and tap the back cover while waiting when the phone does something, such as downloads from market and so on... it keeps me occupied
I added a small bit of cotton fabric between the battery cover and the phone and it seems to have solved the problem. I just cut a bit about 1cm by 3cm and placed it below the camera. This way I don't have any sticky mess from tape in my phone and I hardly every open the back. Maybe I will super glue it eventually but it works fine to just wedge it in there for now.

I just solve my problem 2 days ago, I did was disassemble the phone and remove the housing and put it back, Now I have no creaking even in the battery cover, my phone is now like a rock.
After receiving my Nokia DT-910 charger and realising it would charge fine without a case, but wouldn't with a case, I was very annoyed. I always use a case, so want to charge it with one on. Well, this is XDA, and we make things work here, so this is a mod to get the charger to work with a case.
Heres how to get your phone to charge with a case on it.

The problem is that the charging coil in the stand itself is too low, and when a case is on, the phone is not aligned to the coil inside.
You will need to open the base and front of the charger using a screwdriver/case opener etc. to pry the sides open. You will now need to undo two screws that hole the front cover on that the phone stands against.
[/IMG]
Once undone, pull the cover off, it will take a fair bit of force to do.
[/IMG]
Once inside, CAREFULLY pry the coil off the back of the charger (its stuck on with adhesive film) .. I accidentally cracked the ceramic backing of the coil, but it didn't break the charging circuit luckily and still works.
[/IMG]
Once the coil is off, chop some of the plastic that sits above the coil off.
[/IMG]
With the extra unnecessary plastic gone, you can move the coil up higher. There will be enough length on the cables, obviously don't stretch them too far or they will break.
I super glued the coil in place as the adhesive was a one use only type, let it dry, then put the whole thing back together.
[/IMG]
Now i can charge my nexus 5 with a case on this charger
The really interesting part is that I have an energizer charging mat as well, and the nokia charger is far stronger than this. The Nokia will charge with thicker cases now. I can charge my nexus with this tough case, which is pretty thick.
[/IMG]
[/IMG]
I am also able to charge my nexus 4 with the thickest case i have, the Ballistic Sg, which i think is absolutely amazing, as none of my thicker cases charge on the energizer.
[/IMG]
In case you don't know just how thick this case really is, here it is against my spigen ultra hybrid for the nexus 5.
[/IMG]
So for anyone that wants a thick case and wireless charging, this mod and charger are very much your friend
Hope i helped someone with this mod
Enjoy!
LOL, did exactly the same myself yesterday, including cracking the ceramic, saved me posting it
Only amend I would make to your how to is undo all for screws in the base so the whole backrest detachs from the base and it is then quite easy to split the two halves to get to the coil.

hi there
thanks for the detailed instructions, just what I needed to use my lumia 1520 with the same black/blue type cover you use.
used great caution not to tear the wires and even managed to get the ceramic charging plate off without breaking it. relocated the plate as far up as wires would allow, however now it wouldn't charge at all although a computer guy I'm not an electronics engineer so I'm at a loss
as to what to check before tossing the thing. any ideas welcome!
