Droid X Car Dock for T-Bolt - Thunderbolt Accessories

Hey guys, just wanted to report that a Droid X/X2 car dock can be used for a Thunderbolt without a case on. Just remove the inner part of the dock that you would remove if a Droid X had a case on, unscrew the 4 little screws in the back side and turn the USB plug-in around and viola! Even the clamp on top can be used to hold the phone in place. I have not tried this with another phone yet as I just discovered this today. Hope this helps save some people money and can lead to more creative ideas!

thanks! I have my droid x dock just sitting around doing nothing right now

can you post pics

it works, its just a little tight getting the clamp to snap over the top edge when putting the TB in.
Also, after removing the 4 screws, I had a little bit of difficulty separating the plastic to be able to rotate the micro USB connector, but I was able to manage.

Here are the pics. If you notice it still clamps right in and doesn't mess with the volume rocker.

awesome info!

BAHGHGHH! I hate myself for treating my dock like trash ever since I got rid of my X. I don't even know if I still have that thing in my car. Gonna search now. If i threw it away, ill punch my own gonads

wow, thanks for this. i was actually going to purchase a car dock for myself in the next week or so. going to tackle this project instead.
thanks again!

It fits a little tight for me.
I have to squeeze the back of the plastic of the holder to get the clamp to grab the edge of the TB.
It might be good for "occasional" use, but not sure I trust it long term.

awesome, I bought one of these while they had them on sale for 20 for the wifes x. She never uses it so I get to

I wondered if it could modified..but never pursued it...and went and bought one for the bolt..at least now I have a backup in case it breaks.

Thanks for the info work good

does the droid X dock shake going over bumps like the crappy tbolt car dock?

Nah mine's pretty solid over bumps.

Nice. I have been looking for a good dock to use. You also might want to look at the Thunderbolt dock from ProClip. I have used two of their products in the past for different styles of iPhone and they were very stable.

Am I correct in that this will only work with the normal battery cover and not the inductive charging cover? I just got the inductive charging and now my car dock is pretty worthless and I want to find another one.

Wish it was for extended battery.

Will have to try this so I can leave a dock in my car and one in my truck. Thanks

Just drove from Northern Delaware to Kitty Hawk, NC, (and back) with my TB in the modified X car holder...
It stayed, the TB held in, and it was sturdy.
Because of having to take the case off, I likely wont use the dock/car holder on a daily basis, but its good enough for trips when I need to use the phone as GPS.

Moto folio case mod?

So I'm thinking about doing a mod to the moto folio case and make the front cover detachable and reatachable. The material doesn't feel like it will unravel do I believe if I use a razor blade to cut it off and figure out a way to attach the other side of the lid. Hoping maybe this will make it a little better for the dock however I will probably lose the stand capability. Anyways I got the case for 20 and could probably get it again for that price. Any opinions? Has anyone tried this? Please let me know your thoughts.

Why bother? Fold it underneath when on your lap and u dont notice it. The only time mine annoys me is when i have to charge it
I don't know if it can unravel when cut, but that was a concern of mine as well. I added a 3/8-inch diameter hole over the charging port so that I can charge it with the cover closed. It works great. To prevent unraveling or fraying, I melted the hole (using an old nut driver heated over the stove).
I don't understand the desire to cut the flap off, but I won't question your goal. If you do cut it, you can heat seal the edge with a flame or hot blade.
I just feel like the flap gets in the way but now that I think about it I will probably need the stand capability for school. I may just cut the hole like you said.

So I did it. I really got tired of holding the case open. Now it fits in the dock better as well.

Just charging, that's all you can do really other than plug in some speakers. Kind of bugs me it doesn't have a USB out of the dock. Oh well I only paid $25 for it.
Just put a USB (Motorola Camera Cable) inside my dock tonight. SWEET!
Took some doing, and had top pitch the top weight inside, but it looks pretty clean.

Cradle Review: Sinjimoru Sync and Charge Dock Stand

Noticed a package sitting at my front door last night and found they delivered my Sinjimoru Sync and Charge Dock Stand. After spending a couple minutes attaching the cable to the cradle I found that the phone goes on the cradle very easily. The cradle supports the phone just fine with and without a kickstand case attached. I actually found it a bit more stable / less wobbly with the case on verse mounting it without a case.
Pros:
- Phone goes on very easily using only one hand to mount.
- Supports phone both with and without a case.
- Includes USB cable.
- Charges and syncs just as advertised with a single cable.
- Sharp Looking
Cons:
- Small lightweight base allows it to slide around on desk when pushing/swiping screen.
- Cable takes a little work to mount into cradle when you first set it up.
- Difficult to remove phone from cradle with just 1 hand.
- Phone is a little wobbly/top heavy. (again because of the small lightweight base)
Over all I like it for charging and will use it in conjunction with my Alarm Clock App as a nightstand cradle. However for my office, I will be purchasing something that has a little more stability as I use my phone a lot while on the dock.

Thank you for the review. I hadn't seen this product before.
Thanks for the review! I was looking for a cradle for my phone as well, but didn't see or know of any good ones. I had a Seidio one for my Evo 4g before, but the fitment wasn't all that great. I think it was more so of the micro usb connector not fitting as well as OEM. Do you notice this with the Sinjimoru?

When docked The phone rest on the USB plug and the back cover. So it does fit fine, but lacks the support at the bottom and sides of the phone you find on most cradles. I think it is a fair comprise for the ability to dock with those wanting to have a case on their phone.
Agreed, just placed my order last night. My main use for it will just be a night stand alarm clock. Looks pretty sick too!
Just got my charge dock the other day. As OP has stated it does feel a bit wobbly if you don't have a case as in my situation. My phone is actually only held up by the micro usb port itself, the back has about a 1-2mm gap from supporting the back of the phone. But besides that, the dock does a great job holding the phone. I also have a brushed aluminum case on preorder so once that arrives it should be a solid fit.

Its plastic. CNC machined then engraved then light scotch brite rub for a matte finish.
Prototype created by calprecision.com
I went with 4 Neodymium Magnets 1/2 x 1/8 inch Disc N48. 4 discs hold fine since I keep my phone naked. Even a case like the Neo hybrid from spigen allows charging.
Let me hear your thoughts.
wanna build me one? ill make it worth your time
If the magnets hold strong enough with a case on while using it in a car you have a hit on your hands. Or if a small bracket could be added to the bottom to ensure it doesn't slide off would be good too.
Sent from the jaws of my Hammerhead!
Where would you mount this in a car. I had 2 made originally. One for me one for a co worker. He did a little something on the bottom because he has a case. It wouldn't be hard to make it more professional.
I only needed 4 magnets, he needed six, but with eight it would hold very tight.
These could be done, and probably would have to, without the nexus logo. Thereby opening it up to other devices.
id take one just like that one right now lol
Looks Good
Can you please post a picture with N5 resting on the charger? Any plans to sell it? I will buy one if you can ship internationally.
I'll get you a pick later today or tomorrow psy_spy
How much would everyone be willing to pay for the dock? Market rate of $65 plus shipping? That's if these were to actually be produced. Would this dock be comparable, in your eyes, to the tylt vu dock?
Me too i take one.
How much for the dock with charger and can you post internationally? :good:
I'll take one!
As promised phone charging image.
clean setup man! let me know if you ever decide to make more to sell cause im definitely interested!
I'd be in for one.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I'd also buy one
oh. maybe start a kickstarter for it?
Brilliant, how much?
I'm interested as well if its got a strong magnetic hold on the phone
Is there any chance you could build something like that but with a different shape? I mean, I would prefer a dock/charging station that could hold the phone horizontaly.
Would that be possible?
The dock as i have it now has a good hold on the phone, even landscape. I actually typically have my phone in that direction. I have been rolling ideas around in my head for different configuration of the magnets and charging coil.
I 'm going to start a kickstarter and see what ground it picks up. Maybe toy with some design options or possibilities. I also need a sweet name for it, anyone got any ideas? If this thing takes off I would offer the dude that gave up the name something in return obviously.
If these were in the $55-$65 would everyone still be interested in them?
kickstarter would be sweet. $55-$65 via kickstarter or retail? are you thinking about including the charging coil?
by any chance do you have a nexus 7 (2013)? just wondering if this would work with the nexus 7 as well.

55-65 would be retail, kickstarter would be in the 30-45 range i would think. Im looking at other projects to se how they have them set up. There is A LOT to making a project....
Does the N7 have magnets? would pronanly be to heavy and would require a set up similar to a phone that doesnt have magnets.
The nexus 7 2013 does have magnets. They don't seem to be as strong as the 1s in the nexus 5. They might just seem weaker because they're spaced out more tho.

Simple magnetic/wireless charging car dock made for under $50. Works with cases!

Hello. I have put together a simple way of making a car dock that is both magnetic and wireless charging. I made these docks using parts from Amazon, and the design is strong enough to hold and charge my phone through a pretty thick case. I'm posting this thread to show off what I have made, and to gauge people's interest in these car docks.
Since these don't seem to really exist on the market yet, I'm also considering refining the design and possibly collaborating with someone to mass produce and sell these docks. I refined the design so they are simple as possible to make, and can post a tutorial if people are interested.
Here are the products I used. Total cost under $50:
DigiYes® USB POWERQI Qi Wireless Charger
10 Neodymium Magnets 1/2 x 1/8 inch Disc N48
Aduro U-GRIP PLUS Universal Car Mount
So far I have made three mounts while experimenting with the fabrication process. The first one actually used a peanut butter jar lid and 10 magnets to hold my phone without any support (no pictures of this one). It was functional, but ugly as sin. Subsequent mounts I used the original casing from the charging coil, and simplified the process and cost/strength of magnets by adding a base support. Here are the results:

Not bad for a little bit of drilling and super glue (which I always make a mess of). Because of the way I came across parts, I only used a single "grip" as the base for resting the phone, however using both grips for a wider base might feel better when docking the phone. It's also possible to use even stronger N52 magnets and skip the base altogether, to give your phone the effect of "floating" on the dock.
The drilled holes are 1/2" and have to be close together as possible (without overlapping) in order to fit 4 magnets between the interior screws that hold the charging coil in place (inside the case, not visible). I used a rusty spade bit which was terrible and had a bad habit of tearing off more than it should. To make the mount look as clean as possible, I'd recommend using a more clean cutting bit, maybe something like this which will grind through the plastic without catching or tearing.
Well anyway I hope you guys like it and show some interest. If you have any further questions, please let me know. Thank you for reading!
I made something like this and it worked well. I should however be getting this in next week http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-air-dock
I'm excited for it. It's magnetic and also membrane grip and looks pretty nice.

Interesting position of magnets and size of them. How many mA you get charging? Also what case you using?

The charger is rated for 1A wireless charging, and that seems to be accurate. Is there a more accurate measurement I can pull from the phone? The case is Caseology Premium Shock Absorbent TPU Bumper Case and it's pretty thick in the back. It picks up the wireless coil okay, but I would need stronger N52 magnets to hold it up without a base (which I thought I ordered, but accidentally got n48 instead).

DIY- Wireless Charging Car Mount

I didn't want to spend big money on a wireless charging car mount, so I got creative. The project takes very little time and involves the following items:
-Wireless Charger: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IQTGY2A/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
-Microsuction Tape: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ITX9OU2/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (EDIT: Suggest using different micro-suction tape. This product doesn't work for extended use)
-Docking system: http://smile.amazon.com/Camera-Suction-Tripod-Holder-Screen/dp/B007E4PUT6/ref=pd_bxgy_p_img_y
-And any sort of epoxy, super-glue, anything that forms a strong bond.
Remove the screw from the camera mount and glue it to the underside of the puck-charger, put micro-suction tape on the top side that faces the phone, wait for the stuff to dry, and you're done.

Finished Product

Piece that holds it to mount. Used epoxy to keep it in place
Another view of the back
Note: This material only sticks to glossy surfaces. I was disappointed when it didn't stick to my Distronics case for my S4A, but all I did to remedy this was throw a piece of tape on the back of my phone, and voila! It sticks perfectly.
I plan on putting some clear tape on the back to pretty it up a bit, but for now it just doesn't bother me enough. So far I've only got to use it a few times, but it works amazing. It works best if it's directly on the back cover of your phone, for those of you that don't use cases. One downside to the micro-suction also is it does become dirty, and doesn't work as good. It is really easy to clean though, just take a piece of tape, stick it to it, and peel it off. Good as new, and it's supposed to never lose it's micro-suction ability. Hope it works good for you!
I actually used these two docking systems and put them together:
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00585CLVS/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D7KGLF8/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Since I had them laying around anyway, but there are much cheaper ways to make this possible. Good luck!

I probably spent about $50 total, but I already had most of the pieces lying around anyway. There may be some cheaper micro-suction tape around online somewhere, but I went with the stuff on Amazon, cause I'm an Amazon junkie.. haha. I tried it on a new case:
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GZSPQF0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and holy crap it sticks good!
Looks great, wish I had the patience to make something like this lol!
Very simple solution, looks nice! Post a picture of your phone with the clear tape please.
Does the battery level still goes up while using navigation?
I'm afraid you've put a little bit of distance between the two coils with that case.
Update
So, after using this for a few weeks the micro-suction is failing. I would suggest shopping around for a better one. Even after using tape to refresh it, it just won't hold my S4 Active anymore. I am currently back at the drawing board to find an alternative, and will update when I find something good.
I am too lazy to post a picture of my case with clear tape on it. I actually had some awesome ESD tape on it for a couple weeks, up til today.
And yes, this did continue to charge my phone even with the GPS and music streaming through Bluetooth in my vehicle. This particular charging pad is actually advertised to work good while plugged into a computer USB as well. Works great.
