[Q] Need to replace my Evo. Which hardware version do you like? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a 002 Evo from launch day. It's started missing calls. Like no missed call notification, nothing in my call log. I'm afraid all I can do is swap it out under TEP. If anyone has any suggestions other than replacing it, let me know! Of course I've rebooted my phone. I know most of you will be jealous...but I have my choice of hardware versions for my replacement phone. (One of the techs in my Sprint store is also my friend.)
Those of you that have 004s, are you happy with your camera, and the ROMs you can run where your camera works? I'm rooted and currently running Fresh 3.5.0.1, but want to play around with Shinzul's 4g CM, Miui, a gb ROM, and maybe an HD or Z ROM. I have run Miui, as well as CM in the past. Should I ask for a 002, or will I be able to use a 004 with the camera working?
Also, suggestions for backing up and restoring to the new hardware phone would be appreciated. I'm thinking of nandroiding and removing the wimax.img before restoring. Will that be ok on new hardware, with new H-boot and all? I have H-boot .76, running the 11.19 radio (have tried going back to the original, no better), the original wimax radio, and PRI 1.34_003. Fresh 3.5.0.1 is based on the latest OTA 3.70.651.1.
Thanks for any advice. I did try to search, but since my questions are pretty hardware specific, it was difficult to get relevant hits.

Happy with 0004... but I'm rooted with stock ROM.

I'm not so sure about this. To sprint, an Evo is an Evo. I dont think the techs can "choose" what version to order.
And honestly, I've had a version 2, 3, and 4, and all of them have been exactly the same. Even with the camera change with the 04, I cant tell the difference at all.

I'd go with 003, no question. You have more kernels to choose from.

Even with some of the 003s having the newer camera? Thanks for your help.

I didn't even think about that. I guess it's a crap shoot. I wouldn't go with 002 for the sole reason that they are older (I'm weird like that) and if you go with 004 you are guaranteed to get a phone that is not compatible with every kernel out there. If you go with 003 at least there is a chance of getting a normal one and not a later one with the new camera.

+1 don't go for a four. Still some problems with custom kernels like others said.

I've got a hardware v3 with the new camera. I've run the newest Fresh rom, myns, caulks, cm 6.1, Cm7, and evervolv. As far as kernels, I've played with most all of them. I haven't experienced any issues, camera or otherwise after HTC released source for 15. I'm pleased with the performance out of it, as far as smoothness and quickness goes.
*edit* I came from a launchday v2, got this one under TEP, new not refurb.

Kinda funny no one even mentions which screens anymore. Remember that whole argument? Novatech vs. Epson?

Yeah, the Epsons suck and I got stuck with one

it's not a matter of what you go with, it's a matter of what they give you. you dont really have a choice unless you buy one used

I have the 0004 HW and I don't know what all the fuss is about. I haven't really had any trouble getting a kernal I want that works with this HW. If it is a Sense rom, run a Netarchy Kernal, they all support 0004 anymore, and if it is an AOSP rom, run Savaged.Zen kernal. They support 0004. I am running CM7+4G with a savaged.zen kernal, (I KNOW I AM SUPPOSED TO RUN THAT KERNAL THEY SAY I HAVE TOO, BUT YA KNOW WHAT? THE SAVAGED.ZEN KERNAL WORKS BETTER, AND 4G WORKS!!!!)
I would have said 2 months ago when I got an evo, that the 0004 HW was crappy as noone supported it, main reason I kept to Fresh. But now, most kernals I like support it, and except when they had CM6.1.2+4G, I haven't had a rom not work with the camera.

I think you just get what you get. I got a replacement last week, its an 003. ##786# tells me it was activated in july and refurbed last month.

There is methods to root the evo
Unrevoked is where you need to go for that.. All cameras work on CM Build just no 4G or HDMI.
I just got a new EVO with the new hboot 2.02 and I was able to easily root with with the directions from this thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045.
I chose to go with Myn's twopoint ROM and love it. Plus the 4g and hdmi work (unlike CM's current release).
The only things that don't work with CM are 4g and HDMI.
I was also a CM fan until I discovered Myn. There are lots of great ROMS for Evos, but CM and Myn's seem to have the most users (at least active ones) and Myn's tends to have the best satisfaction based on users.
CM is a developers playground while Myn is more user-friendly with its customization. Either way you can't go wrong with this phone

Htc evo hardware 004 questions??

I'm getting a replacement evo on tuesday, I currently have a launch date evo with hardware 002 so im not quite up to date with the latest evos.. Now assuming it comes hardware 004 what would be the best method to root??? Also does it work with cm6 I read something about camera issues.. And last but not least does it work with kernels such as netarchy's with everything working??
Thanks for answering my questions really appreciate it, if there is anything else I should know about the newer evos please feel free to school me on them.

The 004 (and some 003s) have a new camera which uses different drivers, and since HTC is breaking the law by not releasing the kernel source ("yet") the CM team has to build up the drivers from scratch. Toastcfh has told me that he will start working on the camera as soon as he finishes polishing up WiMax.
As for rooting, it's possible. 2.02 and 2.10 hboot have both been rooted, they just take some effort, and do not panic. Also, knowing how to BS to a Sprint store rep in case you brick your phone is a good idea, just in case.

I really wouldn't worry about it... All the refurb EVOs I'm seeing coming out of the warehouse are either 002 or early 003s. The 004s are too new as of right now.

Hardware 0004 and Kernel Source, Whats taking so long?

How long does it normally take HTC to release kernel source? Are they behind on this one or what? I'm dieing to take advantage of some of the early gingerbread stuff, some of the HD ports and of course some over-clocking and better battery life, but cant. Unless i want to lose my camera. It seems like these 0004 and late 0003 hardware revisions have been out for quite a while with no kernel source love. Come on HTC, I'm dieing over here!!!!

I may stand corrected here, but I believe that the source tree for Htc#17 was released recently. I think I read something about it in the netarchy thread but don't quote me on it.
try the sbc no have 4.2.2 kernel. it works fine on a 004 evo.
I have a late 003 model with the new camera and don't have any camera problems when I try new stuff out. Have you actually TRIED flashing any of these things you want?

Try every day. Thats also why i made this thread and bumped it the next day, because i haven't actually tried any of the stuff i'm complaining about. I'm not talking about sense custom roms, they normally all work. My 0004 Camera doesnt work with the bundled kernel of any gingerbread rom, or any CM6 rom. Also it doesnt work with any of the NEW sense ports from the HD devices. I will try the 4.2.2 like suggested earlier, hopefully that'll do it.

Kernel works ok, the camera doesn't. I'm downloading another sense rom and will try 4.2.2 with it. I would have thought overclocking and camera would have been big news for 004 hardware. I've been on XDA everyday since i got my 0004 and haven't seen anything anywhere about custom kernel for 0004. PLEASE prove me wrong
Tried 2 more roms with the sbc 4.2.2 no havs, rom boots, but no camera. Can you please verify your comment? thanks so much
Have you tried flashing the stock kernel then flashing a universal kernel. (of course after reboot). Supposedly it copies your drivers from the previous kernel

Well a lot the roms i use have the stock kernel from the beginning, well atleast all the regular sense roms. Most of the devs have been using the 15 or 17 as their base kernel. so to answer the question, YES i have, twice today. Still no camera. Thanks for the suggestion.

but the roms you have tried with the stock kernel is the kernel for hardware 004? I think they #15 is the one for 004 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9875223&postcount=2
HAve you tried Calkulins EViO http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811695 It has the camera working for 004. They pushed some drivers that was needed for the camera. If you read the details in the post it shows which drivers were copied. I dont remember which post but probably 100 back from the end.
1) HTC is breaking the law by not immediately releasing the kernel source when the OTA hit production status. That's why the Gingerbread source came out right when the Nexus S, the first Gingerbread-running production device, went on sale.
2) Toastcfh has said that if HTC hasn't released the kernel source by then, he will work on getting the 004/late-003 camera drivers working as soon as he and Shinzul finish off WiMax for AOSP/CM.

Interesting read, Thanks. So i guess the earlier poster with the supposed late 0003 that is working with everything isnt actually a new camera 0003.. Didnt think i missed the source on that one, its kind of a big deal! There will be a ton of new custom kernels when the source is released due to the excellent battery on the newer kernels. Not to mention the 0004 support.

Precisely. Some of the 003's, and most (but not all) of the 004's use the new camera, which had the drivers added in 3.30.651.3 (and .5). That's the kernel we really need, as it affects AOSP ROMs too, like CyanogenMod. Getting 3.70.651.1 is necessary too though for Sense users, to get like you said, the battery and speed improvements.

Thanks Dwertz for all of your effort. That post was basically to get cameras working on the HD ports with the stock kernel. Not really what i'm looking for, but again thanks. As you can see this thread has some more concrete info now and like i thought, we are still a nogo for custom kernels and 0004 hardware. We are approaching 120 days. It should happen any day now... My fingers are crossed
That and you gotta think that they might of released the source by now if they didn't run into the multiple OTA's recently. maybe they decided to hold off and just release the latest one instead of releasing back to back sources when one would be obsolete.

What will Sprint/Samsung do?

Ok, so with the issues that EB13 has, will Sprint just correct the issues and release EB13 again with the fixes or will it be a new update? Maybe just some patches? IDK! Does anyone know how they will go about doing this?

That's a given since the name is indicative of when it was compiled.
Most likely we won't see any kind of fix before the 20th at the earliest, and if it doesn't come before April then it's probably never coming and we will be SOL like the Moment users who were stuck with a ridiculously buggy 2.1 with no support from Samsung/Sprint.

LOL, na then that would have happen months ago!
Once they put out a product, they only update it in response to mass outrage. Google keeps popping out updates and the manufactures and carriers can't slap bloatware on fast enough, so they lose incentive to update at all. They clearly don't focus their efforts as hard as these wonderful developers do! But why would they? They're hoping you'll get so frustrated that you'll move on to their next, barely-improved device!

SO TRUE, exactly what i have been sayin. I really dont even think we will see gingerbread, and if we do that will most likley be it for this failure of a phone. If it wasnt for custom roms and all the hard work around here i would have taken my epic back to the ****ing sprint store and threw it at the lying rep that sold it to me.
Same here. This phone has so Mich.potential that it will never see. Yeah the developers here are amazing but it would help them.out so.much.if Samsung gave.more support. If it wasn't for our developers I wouldn't have this phone right now.

I first used Bonsai 3.0 and restored everything using Titanium Backup and had FC's and data problems.
I Odined back to Stock EB13 Extended and then reflashed Bonsai 3.0.1 and DID NOT restore via TB rather just installed everything I needed from the Market and synced all my contacts back, and Bingo. Everything is flawless... I mean flawless. I have not had ONE FC or data problems. I even got Wifi Tether 3.0 Pre-11 working great! (Haven't used it long enough to see if it crashes, only two days so far with spans of 2 hours at a time)
I think thats what's causing many problems with current flash junkies; they flash so much that they rely on backups like TB or even NANDROID backup that sometimes all they need is a fresh install of EVERYTHING.
I hope this helps
This phone was decent out of the box, but no huge improvement over many of the other android phones... But after Midnight and Bonsai and Syndicate roms, it's many times better than any stock phone out there! Granted, the same is true for most of the top phones once given their own custom roms... but I bought this one. And my only regret is that I can't take half that money back and give it to K0nane and the others for doing Sprint and Samsung's work for them!
EC05 was actually great (if you were lucky to catch it the week it was released, if not, it is on this forum somewhere.) The only reason I rooted was to delete some apps, to overclock, and to try out 2.3.3. I can't wait until CM7 is done. I currently use Red Beast with the new Genocide kernel. I have overclocked it to 1.12 Ghz and undervolted it to 1200 mV (the amount of energy used at the stock 800 mhz. It is extremely fast and saves me tons of battery. So if you are done messing around with sprint, start making your phone your own.

[Q] A Cautious and Hopeful Noob

Hello and thanks for reading yet another "noobaholic anonymous" post. I spent most of last night searching, and could not find what I was looking for... and the things that seemed relevant, were 2 years old. That's a century in this hobby. Sooooo....
Here's my dilemma. A year and several months ago, I rooted and ROM'd my Droid X with CM7. It was a cakewalk! But, I REALLY lusted for a HTC Inc2. So I switched to the Inc2 a year ago. Like you, I've been waiting for the ICS update, which isnt coming. So I've decided to go ahead and hot rod this sucker. I am on Page Plus, so warranty means nothing to me.
I've seen plenty of posts to downgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.3.3, I can handle that I think. And from what I've read of the various ROM's, it looks like Skyraider Zeus is the one for me. I want to keep the Sense stuff (clock, weather, calendar, notifications, phone launcher etc) but everything else is fair game.
So once I do the 2.3.3 thing and root my Inc2, where do I get the latest ROM and how do I get it on my phone? Also, I would like to try the GingerBangSense ROM and maybe CM7.2 as they get good reviews - is there some way to switch between them? Or do I have to go all the way to root and start over from scratch?
Forgive my asking the "same old stupid questions", I realize they've been asked before a million times. But as I said, the Inc2 is getting quite long in the tooth and there are a ZILLION threads on it. What scared me enough to stick my neck out and ask all these questions in this thread - is I cant find a concise thread in the latter part of 2012 or 2013. I didnt want to screw something up or miss out on something that's happened since early 2011 or whenever the majority of the threads were birthed.
So thank you again, for taking time to help someone trying to regain his sanity.

Once you downgrade to 2.3.3, and obtain clockwork, you can flash as much as you want. Skyraider can be found on the bamf forum.

Thanks for the replies. ANY help is greatly appreciated.
I found this thread and am planning on using it to do the S-OFF/clockwork stuff http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1219246
But there's nothing about flashing a ROM. Would you recommend a thread for that? I assume Clockwork is what I'll be using to install the ROM's?
I feel like a the new kid in 3rd grade!

Download the ROM you want to flash and place it on your SD card
Wipe data/cache/dalvic. I haven't used clockwork in a while so I don't remember what its called. 4ext let's you wipe everything but the SD card.
After the wipe, install ROM VIA CLOCKWORK. Then reboot.
Most ROM threads include instructions on flashing said ROMS.
Good luck.

Here is a good thread for multiple ways on rooting. Because the Inc2 got software updates rooting became problematic for some for a while. Figure out what version you are first before rooting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751796
Once done, download a ROM onto your sd card, reboot into recovery and do the following:
- Make a Nandroid (backup)
- Wipe data
- Wipe dalvik/cache
(I format system next)
- install file from sd card
- reboot and profit!
Thank you all, I am now the proud owner of a fully rooted and rom'd Dinc2. If I could, I would hand out candy or liquor, depending on your age
At the moment, I'm running Skyraider Zeus 1.3. Of course the ROM'ing bug has bitten, so IC Tazz is downloading at the moment and I'm thinking GingerBliss may be next. I'm torn though, I like the Sense GUI but would of course like the latest updated stuff... most of the ICS based or any of the CM stuff seems to have stripped out the Sense and it all looks like my old (and ugly..) Droid X. Any recommendations or are the 3 ROM's I've mentioned so far about it?
I have one more question for you elder statesmen - I have Clockwork Recovery on the phone right now. I see a couple others listed as TWRP or EXT4, are they any better or necessary for any other ROMs? Or will Clockwork do everything I need done and best to stick with it?

Viperinc is the sexiest ROM, but has lag issues. Pacman is pretty stable.
4ext is way better than cwm and you can get the recovery control app which makes managing backups, wipes a breeze.

I tried SRZ, it wasn't bad but I wanted to try ICS, so I loaded IC Tazz. I like 90% of it but GEEZ is that Sense 4.0 clock terrible looking! I realize you can load Fancy Widgets and get the Sense 2.x clock / weather look, but it does not trigger the Sense weather like the HTC clock does. SOooooo..... if there is some way of getting my good ol' HTC clock/weather (2.x) in IC Tazz, I'd be happy.
Oh - the OTHER iritation - on the lock screen, the clock is such a terrible skinny font! I dont know about you guys, but I use my phone as a time piece all through the day. So I wil whip it out and glance at the clock. I'm getting older (too old..) and really miss the 2.x clock skin/font/etc.
Other than that, WOW, what a nice update.
Now about the 4ext vs CWM - I read as many posts as I felt were relevant, and TWRP sounded like the best choice. So I downloaded Goomanager from the Play store, and used it to install TWRP (according to the instructions on this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943592 ) It did it's thing, but there's no icon for TWRP on the phone now. Part of the perk was this was touch driven and no more volume/power button launching... so now what? I'm downloading Viper right now, so I'd like to slap it on the Dinc2 and check it out before I make my final choice and reactivate this phone. (I've got it offline till I get it "right")

You will still have to get into TWRP with the power menu but once you are in there you can navigate without using the volume and power buttons to back up and install things.

In the last 24 hours I went from bonestock 2.3.4, to 2.3.3 to S-OFF to full root, to SRZ to IC Tazz, with CWM. Then TWRP went on and ViperINC went on... THEN I really lost my mind and put the 320 radio on it. Noob to Addict in 24 hours.
See what you guys created? You gotta be careful giving out all this information!
While I have your attention, and being I dont have enough posts to comment in the 'dev' area, if I should go back to SRZ or ICT, am I going to have to flash the radio? I looked ALL over and can not find a single working radio link. For what it's worth - I saw no gain from the 622 (GB) radio to the 320 (ICS) db wise.

On the ViperINC thread (the ROM), they had the radio listed right below it. Being the radio in my phone was several generations old (622) and my reception SUCKS, and (and and and..) I never flashed a radio before and I was feeling confident with my new found toys.... I went ahead and flashed it.
I reactivated the phone today, and can say the reception is not any better in the areas I usually use it. I guess it's just the flaw of the Dinc2.

I meant you shouldn't have to change it back. Sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for the clear up. What about the 320 radio being ICS based? SRZ is GB based, for example... last thing I want to do is brick my phone. Today I found a possible crippling flaw in the Venom ROM - the voice doesnt work on Google Maps. I use that app a lot, so I may have to revert to GB for now.

The radio works fine on all versions of android.
Sent from my Nitsy CM7.
Is the "radio" only for the phone (calls) or does it also do the GPS? Since I loaded ViperINC, my GPS does not work.

try the patch, the thread for it is in the dev section, fishing the radio should not have affected it, and radios have nothing to do with the version of android, its seperate, a firmware...
