You still have the stock recovery installed. DId you try to install ClockWorkMod Recovery yet? If yes, you did try to install CWM recovery already it means it didn't stick , sometimes you have to do it a couple of times before it sticks (and I'm talking about ClockworkMod recovery). If you have not installed ClockWorkMod recovery yet , first download Rom Manager from the market ( I see you already have it) , then open it , go into menu/settings and select erase recovery, then go back to the main page of rom manager and select FLash ClockworkMod recovery, a sub menu will pop up with your model phone on it, select it, after it is finish select reboot into recovery, if you still see the ! mark it means it didn't stick, pull the battery and reinstall it, then go back into rom manager and flash recovery again, sometime it take a couple of tries before it sticks. Once it sticks and you reboot into recovery and you see CWM recovery 2.5.1.3 screen, then you can go back into rom manager and flash your custom rom or you can do it from the recovery screen as long as you have the custom rom on the root of your sdcard.
Remember you need S-off for it to work, it will not work with temp root.

Mine is not temp root mine is perm root and isit a must to have S-OFF? Cause mine is still S-ON maybe thats the problem?

Yes, and yes. S-ON would allow you to manually enter Clockwork Recovery by getting to the recovery menu you're currently seeing, and then flashing it using the "install update.zip" method. I wouldn't worry about going through all of that though. Just do the S-OFF, and then Flash Recovery from ROM Manager and you'll be set.

If you still have S-on you are not perm rooted. You must have S-off to flash a custom rom and a custom recovery.

Alright thanks guys finally did S-OFF and it works. THANKS!!

Ok i got it working but now my touch buttons are not working, help please?

You have to find the proper key patch for your version of the Desire Z and apply it.
Sent from my HTC Vision

How do I find the key patch?
EDIT: Got it working.

I feel retarded

OK, this is downright embarrassing, I have linux experience, I have experience unlocking and flashing almost every HTC winmo device, and right now I seriously need a clue on how to flash my evo with damagecontrol.. i believe i already rooted it properly, i come to this conclusion by typing "id" at the terminal on the device and the uid is root. seriously i feel dumb right now.
well if you are rooted all you need to do is put the rom zip on your memory card and then go into recovery..
from there wipe then flash from zip.
from what ive seen soo far, might i have to rename the damagecontrol rom zip to pc36IMG.zip? and to get to the recovery screen just hold vol down and power?

You don't need to rename it. Yes, that is how you get into recovery. If you're using ClockworkMod recovery, then you should select "Install zip from SD card" and then browse to the ROM, then install it. You might need to wipe your data first for it to work properly. Do a nandroid backup first in case something goes wrong.
ROM Manager... works wonders for noobs like us
ok, Maybe i need to see the whole picture in a verifyable way. Just so i can see this thing from the inside out i have some more questions.
1. How do i verify that I have full root access? I am root when i "id" at console.
2. Im assuming NAND is protected storage onboard the phone.. How do i verify I have it unlocked?
3. How do i know the recovery image has been flashed?
Where these questions come from is the fact that I used jiqqaman's OTA simple root witch i think was a big mistake if i was to understand what is actually happening and being done.. so basically after running OTA simple root i have no idea whats been done, or how it was done...
if you used simply root you should be ok.. i rooted my Evo 1st thing the "old way".. not sure how to check if you are fully rooted. maybe someone else can help there.
1st thing you need to do is find the pc36IMG.zip and delete it of remane it.... i did mine root-pc36IMG.zip
then power off the phone..... when its off hold the power button and volume down ( same time) this should give you a white screen while it reads for the pc36 zip... since you remaned it nothing will happen.... after this you should see recovery.. should be the 2nd one...
volume down to highlight it and hit power buttom
the phone should go into recover mode.... from there you should see wipe etc... wipe data and cache then flash rom from zip
dont remane the rom.... volume keys to navigate..
hope this helps
ok, so far so good, but when i go to flash the new rom, I choose install update from SDcard, it then looks for it and cant find it. The rom is on the root of the SD and it's named "DamageControlv3.1.2-deodexed.zip" also trying the ROM manager pops an error of "an error occured while attempting to run privileged commands."
Alright what you need to do is download ROM manager from the market. Once you do that do the "flash clockworkmod recovery" and then once its done click on "reboot into recovery" then you should be able to install the ROM. Hope this helped

it should find the rom.. where you can volume down to highlight it.
are you unpluged from the computer while you do this?
once rooted.. simply put the rom in your card and unplug the phone to flash.

well once i had rooted my phone (this was over a month ago) via unrevoked it installed superuser for me... so idk. and it was on the stock ROM
Okay I have no clue what you have and don't have. But a few thoughts, make sure you are choosing install zip from sdcard/choose zip from sdcard and not apply sdcard:update.zip. If you are unsure you have a recovery image flashed, in extras on SimpleRoot there is an option to flash recovery. Other than that not too sure what is wrong.
unrevoke will only give you root and not nand unlocked...,you need to run toast method 2 nand unlock.

When you boot into recovery (while the phone is off hold volume down and power up) check the top of the screen to see what version hboot you have. If you ran simple root and showing version 0.79.0000 then something went wrong. It should say 0.76.2000

I am having the exact same issue. I get the error message from rom manager as well. And I cannot tether. I flashed some other roms that have had too many bugs to count so I am back at "just rooted" nandroid restore and am getting the same errors. What is the next step?

He mentioned that he ran simple root program not unrevoked and simple root will unlock nand. See my post above to verify if your actually rooted. If hboot version is .79 then you have not unlocked nand.
success, it seems once youve already used simpleroot, it's a PITA to get clockwork on it unless you use the option in extras of simpleroot. Success is mine, although i think i have a few more grey hairs for it. Thanks to all those who helped. And to put out words of advice for any other newbs... when they say wipe, they mean cache, userdata AND DELVIC! If you dont you might crap yourself when the phone goes into boot loop! I know i almost lost it. Thanks again everyone!

[Help!] Need to regain root ...

Firstly, I'd like to apologize if this info is already somewhere on this forum or the web but I've searched endlessly since yesterday trying to find an answer to this.
The gist:
- Rooted evo using unrevoked3
- Stock info: hboot .97; radio 2.15.00.09.01; kernel 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e
build 3.29.651.5; pri version 1.77_003; prl 60670
- Flashed CM6.1.1 rom > tried to flash to a myn rom and had issues flashing going through ROM manager or through bootloader, screen kept freezing on white screen
- Somehow it came to be that the phone would endlessly loop on the bootloader screen and I couldn't get the CM6 rom to load either
- Ended up using a RUU (Supersonic_WWE3.26.651.6_Radio_2.15.00.07.28_NV_1.4044signed)
- Now the hboot is .93 and bootloader shows S-OFF but I dont have root access for some reason. I've tried doing the unrevoked3 process but even after uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and that whole process the unrevoked3 program would not recognize my phone being connected to the computer and in device manager it showed my phone as a portable storage device instead of under android phone like the first time around
I have no idea what to do to regain root so I can flash roms on it again, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
Try reloading factory settings then go through root process.
Then flash a ROM using ROM manager (its what I use).
Or just load into bootloader and install .zip from there. Another easy way to flash new ROM.
Sent from an unknown ROM using an unknown device in some scary place.
Can You get into Recovery? If so do a Restore of the CM6, then do a factory reset. Then Flash Myns

I had this exact same problem with CM6 about 5 days ago, got the screen with the phone. I ended up letting the phone reboot, letting it sit for awhile. It loaded up normal. It sounds like you don't have a custom recovery installed any longer. I would start your troubleshooting there and see if that helps at all.
Just go into the market download superuser should give u Su. If not then good news is you have s off just find a rooted pc36100.zip like a Sprint lovers version can be found in the universal root method .... if you have s off you can install in unsigned roms .. once that's done install Rom manager after superuser app is installed and flash recovery from the Rom manager first install clockworld if you want then flash ra

[Q] How do I start my Desire hd in recovery mode?

Happy New Year everyone!
As the title says, I'd like to start my phone in recovery mode so I can flash a new ROM on it...being a total noob here, I have no clue on how to do that...any help available please?
Thanks so much
If you have all the pre-requisites (root, s-off and/or radio s-off, clockworkmod recovery installed), you go to recovery either by
a) Enter the ROM Manager app and click "Reboot to Recovery"
b) Reboot the phone while holding the "volume down" button, this will take you to your bootloader. Scroll to highlight "RECOVERY" (with volume buttons) and press the power button to select it.
That's it

Thanks tmh, it looks like I have to "have all the pre-requisites" first then...now how to I do all that...is there any "how to" guide for that?
Quite a few guides if you head on into the Desire HD Android Development forum. There are guides for for rooting, installing eng hboot, radio s-off, custom recovery etc. there. And a nice "glossary" as well, if things like s-off and stuff is jibberish to you, as it was to me when I got my DHD (came from a Hero)
Do note though, that if you updated your DHD with the latest OTA update (firmware 1.72.something), you CAN NOT root it yet, and therefor not install any of the other pre-requisites for installing custom ROM's.
uhmm...I just got it yesterday so I haven't touched any of that stuff yet I guess I need to find out what exactly am I running now and then take it from there...but first of all I have to figre out what "root" means...lol
thanks so much for the quick answers
Then I suggest you start out by reading this thread then, as it explains most of the terms you'll encounter on your way to installing a custom ROM
Don't accept any ota updates either. Otherwise you will become just another user who can't get root.

You can't be on Clockworkmod 2.5.1.3 because the red triange is the stock recovery!
Are you 100% sure you have permanent root and either radio s-off or eng hboot s-off?
If you only have root, and not some form of s-off then rom manager will report you have flashed CWM correctly but the stock recovery will be restored when you reboot.

Thanks - that was an eye opener! Rom Manager reported that current recovery was the one stated, even after reboot, so I assumed all was correct.
I had used Easy Radio Tool 2.2 a couple of times, choosing the first option (Radio S-OFF, Super-CID and SimUnlock (usual)), and it reported success. Then I tried only doing Radio S-OFF and it worked first time around...
Thanks for your input!
krakout I had the same problem as you. I rooted my DHD installed Rom Manager then install Clockworkmod. Next I tried to back up my rom and got an phone with a triangle sign.
Then I went into the recover menu and it was the stock one not Clockworkmod. I solved this issue by flashing Clockworkmod again after using Easy Radio Tool 2.2 and choosing the first option (Radio S-OFF, Super-CID and SimUnlock (usual))

[Q] Upgrading to cyanogenmod 7.1 issues

Phone: HTC Desire GSM
I have Cyanogen 7.0.3 and want to upgrade to 7.1, mainly to keep up to date but also because since I got a market update a couple of months ago I keep getting force closes whenever I try to update or download a new app. This also force closes when it tries to update the superuser app, as it says binary outdated and won't let me use it, then tries to download the new one and FC's.
When I try to go into recovery, I get the red triangle. How can I get a custom recovery like clockworkmod on there? I also noticed from the bootloader menu that I still have S_ON, how can I fix this? The suggestion from the cyanogen wiki is to use Revolutionary, but when filling out the form for the beta key, my HBOOT version is not on there. Mine is 0.75, the only two options are 0.93 and 1.02.
What are my options for getting cyanogen 7.1 on my phone, or at least fixing this awful force close thing that leaves my market unusable. I've tried a few fixes for it but none have worked.

jheeze theres a troubleshooting guide for you stickied.. so it's the first thing you see when you go into Q&A and yet you still post a new thread.. come on man that's what its there for! Just check it out and you can get a solution there
Uninstall updates on superuser
Try setting language to US English for market.
Assume you used Rom manager to flash before?
Also sounds like you rooted pre unrevoked?
At the red triangle, press vol.up plus power. Does it say HTC recovery 2.0e? If so this is the.leaked engineering recovery we started with.
If you used Rom manager, you probably have update.zip on your sd card to boot into cwm fake flash.
If not, here it is: http://db.tt/s6MoApxB
Put it on the root of sd and boot into the engineering recovery. Apply update from there then take a nandroid backup.
If its true alpharev doesn't work with 0.75 (have you tried? I don't know) best bet is probably to RUU. But in order to use alpharev, not sure if cm7 is compatible so flash teppic74 rooted stock Froyo. You can also do this via fake flash cwm. Run alpharev to test.
Like I said, if not, probably easier to RUU then root with unrevoked or s-off with revolutionary

It's the first thing I went to, but my situation seems to meld two or three of the problems addressed in that guide.
I'm rooted, with S_ON, going to recovery brings up the red triangle, my HBOOT is 0.75. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest some specific actions for me to take. It's a lot of things to consider and is somewhat overwhelming. I don't know where to begin.

Yes, I put cyanogen 7.1 on my sd card and went to flash through rom manager, but it went to the red triangle screen. If you mean did I use rom manager to get my current version of cyanogenmod on my phone, then yes I did do that. However that was on my computer before I upgraded to Win7. I had this .bat file that I ran and it pushed a load of files to my phone over usb which fixed the red triangle and took it to a recovery menu. I can't find that again. Would it work if I did have it?
Also sounds like you rooted pre unrevoked?
I suppose so. I got my Desire a few days after it came out, rooted it probably 2-3 months later.
At the red triangle, press vol.up plus power. Does it say HTC recovery 2.0e? If so this is the.leaked engineering recovery we started with.
Yes, it says 'Android system recovery <2e>, in blue text. I also have a small menu consisting of Reboot system now, Apply sdcard:update.zip(I assume that's from rom manager?), wipe data/factory reset, and wipe cache partition. It also says below all that in yellow text, 'E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
If you used Rom manager, you probably have update.zip on your sd card to boot into cwm fake flash.
If not, here it is: http://db.tt/s6MoApxB
I heard Rom Manager is not good anymore as of some recent updates to it. It can mess up installations. Is this true?

Thank you for that. Is my situation bad, is it salvagable? So I should apply the update.zip from that recovery screen? What happens after that?
In fact, maybe I should revise what I actually want to do. I just want cyanogen 7.1, so do I even need to gain S_OFF? What do I need to do to be able to get into recovery and flash it? Is it that simple or do I need to do other things?
You doo if you want to use CM7 HBOOT. Some root apps also requires S-OFF.

did you do a full wipe before you installed CM? if you didn't go to mounts and storage and format everything apart from the sdcard and then flash it again.

What I would do:
Use alpharev 1.8 to S-OFF
Download recovery
Do a full wipe (mounts & storage, format boot, syste, data, cache, sd-ext)
Flash ROM

also @RootSU - I swear you can't flash anything from the stock recovery? I tried before and it didn't let me.. otherwise what would be the point of rooting and flashing custom recovery if it was that easy?
also im pretty sure Alpharev works on that version, it's revolutionary that doesn't.
No not stock. Before unrevoked we all had to push an engineering HTC recovery (used by HTC engineers) not stock. It's the one.that says 2.0(e) at the top. You can apply update.zip only

oh, I thought that was the stock one, and yeah I tried applying update.zip through that recovery once but it didn't work for me. I've only tried to use it once so I guess you know about it more than me

The update.zip I used to apply regularly was the fakeflash cwm. I often forgot back in those days that the reboot into recovery from the power button took me to the Triangle unlike RM which took me to CWM.
The huge downfall of this setup is that sometimes if your FS is already a little corrupt, CWM decides to "wipe" the sd card, taking with it the update.zip for cwm.
Thats why I RUU's and rooted with unrevoked when it came out.

Ahh right, I never knew that.. I only rooted my phone about 6 months after I got it so I used unrevoked from the start

It says <2e> at the top of the recovery when I do power+vol.up at the red triangle screen. From what you've said this seems to indicate I do have the engineering recovery.

search your clockworkmod folder for a "update.zip"
place it in the root of your sdcard
when you boot the engineering reocvery, press VOLUME UP and POWER together.. it may take several attempts before you get anything.. sometimes you don't press it at exactly the same time or whatever
choose "apply update.zip"
When the new recovery is booted
flash a rom

Ive been in this situation and it can be a nightmare if the SD fails so personally rather than flashing a rom using cwm fake flash, I would simply nandroid backup.
Then RUU and start from scratch. As unique as the 2e is, its better to have a decent recovery flashed.
Update.zip should be on the root of sd anyway. If not, here it is:http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20471345/SUroot/Tools/Android/Recovery/CWM2.5.0.7 fakeflash/update.zip
thanks for the reply bortak, i will try when I get bored of the current rom - Aurora....
I've read it in quite a few places of users experiences the force close phone.android error inspite of the wipes (not format's)

[Q] Can't get into recovery

Hi everyone!
First of all, thank you for taking the time to read this!
I have tried to do research on my problem but can't solve it...
The problem is that i can't get into recovery to backup my stock rom.
Specs: HTC Wildfire S, marvel A510e, S-on, Bootloader unlocked, Rooted, Radio-7.54.39.28M, Andriod 2.3.5, HTC sence: 2.1, Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 5.0.2.8, Super SU.
I followed the guide: "How to root the Wildfire S with S-ON"on Andriod forums by CafeKampuchia, thumbs up for him, It got me this far but, now I want to do the thing for which I rooted my phone in the first place: Installing a costum ROM. Therefore I want to backup my stock ROM.
When I open in HBOOT (1.09.0099) and select recovery, the phone reboots and i see the HTC screen, this disappears after 2 sec and my screen turns black... (phone is still on beceause the buttons on the bottom are lighted.)
When I boot the normal way and try to boot into recovery trough CWM ROM manager same thing happen. Also flashed this recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213229 Same thing happed...
So how can i backup my stock rom?
Many thanks in advantage!

Reboot system now
Aplly update from sdcard
Wip[e date/factory reset
Wip chase partition
And finaly in yellow it said: E: Cant open /cache/recovery/command

I can't get into recovery.. either ways. trough CWM or via hboot.
I just reflashed my stockrom and flashed the following recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213229
This actually made it worse, recovery just kills the phone... So think i'm going to reflash stock recovery again.

Hello!
We have already faced this problem. We cannot find the reason why on some devices CWM is not working. It is characteristic for some devices. The decision is not found yet. We used all known methods for today, and all CWM versions (5.0.2.6 & 5.0.2.8), but are not present result.
Colleagues from 4pda.ru
You might try placing update zip on root of your sdcard and choose apply update from sdcard.
Too bad it doesn't have reinstall packages.

Maybe try different versions of superuser and busybox. Use app like titanium backup to check versions.

didn't work I already tried.I want to know what kinds of things relate to recovery, kernel?booting?
factory reset....
Now i was stupid enough to press factory reset in HBOOT.... -_-
After boot the phone keeps loading...
Any opties?
Try Alquez's PG76IMG unofficial cwm recovery. Put it on root of sdcard and boot into hboot. Accept update to install recovery.
